Os padrões de associação entre epífitos e forófitos não podem ser considerados espécie-específicos, mas as árvores que os epífitos colonizam também não são um conjunto aleatório das espécies forofíticas de um determinado local. Ao invés disso, parece haver uma preferência de certos epífitos por diferentes forófitos. No entanto, se conhece pouco sobre os fatores que determinam essa preferência. Nosso objetivo nesse trabalho é avaliar como os atributos funcionais e a filogenia dos epífitos vasculares influenciam na associação dos epífitos com os forófitos em uma Floresta Ombrófila Mista no sul do Brasil. Para isso nós (1) investigamos padrões de associação positiva e negativa entre grupos funcionais de epífitos e grupos de forófitos e como a diversidade e os atributos funcionais dos epífitos variavam em função do tamanho do forófito e (2) inferimos sobre a existência de sinal filogenético no uso de árvores hospedeiras pelos epífitos, procuramos por estrutura filogenética nas comunidades epifíticas e investigamos diferenças de composição filogenética de epífitos vasculares em diferentes clados de forófitos. Foram amostrados 70 forófitos compreendendo 15 espécies pertencentes a diversos clados e com arquiteturas e características variadas. A amostragem compreendeu 31 espécies epifíticas com os principais clados sendo Polypodiaceae, Bromeliaceae e Orchidaceae. A associação de grupos de epífitos vasculares com diferentes grupos de forófitos sugere que as características dos forófitos proporcionam ambientes contrastantes e que diferentes valores de atributos são necessários para colonizar esses ambientes. Mais especificamente espécies epifíticas com menor área específica foliar (SLA) parecem predominar em árvores maiores e maior SLA em árvores menores. Encontramos sinal filogenético na utilização dos forófitos, sugerindo que a conservação das interações com os forófitos deve ter sido importante ao longo da evolução dos epífitos. A tendência a agrupamento filogenético nas comunidades epifíticas sugere a influência de filtros ambientais representados pelas diferentes características dos forófitos estruturando as assembleias de epífitos. Clados mais basais de forófitos apresentaram composição filogenética distinta devido, sobretudo, a presença de diferentes clados de monilófitos epifíticos nessas árvores. Angiospermas epifíticas ocorreram principalmente em forófitos pertencente as eurosídeas. A preferência de epífitos por forófitos parece ser influenciada pelo surgimento de novidades morfológicas e ecofisiológicas em alguns clados, enquanto outros mantiveram o seu nicho ancestral. A composição florística das florestas quando da origem dos clados epifíticos também parece influenciar a associação entre epífitos e forófitos. Ao utilizar informações sobre os atributos e filogenia das espécies de epífitos vasculares nós podemos melhor compreender os mecanismos ecológicos e históricos que influenciam os padrões de associação entre epífitos e forófitos. / It has been shown that patterns of association between epiphytes and phorophytes can not be considered species-specific, although the trees that epiphytes colonize are not a random subset of phorophyte species in a particular location. Instead, there seems to be a preference of some epiphytes for different phorophytic species. However, little is known about the factors determining this choice. Our objective in this study is to assess how functional attributes and phylogeny of vascular epiphytes influence the association of epiphytes with the phorophytes in an Araucaria Forest in Southern Brazil. For that we (1) investigated the positive and negative association patterns between functional groups of epiphytes and groups of phorophytes and how functional diversity and functional traits of epiphytes varied with host tree size and (2) inferred about the existence of phylogenetic signal on the host trees use by epiphytes, looked for phylogenetic structure in the epiphytic communities and investigated differences in the phylogenetic composition of vascular epiphytes in different phorophyte clades. We used a sample of 70 phorophytes comprising 15 species and belonging to different clades and with different architectures and traits. The sample comprised 31 epiphytic species, the major clades being Polypodiaceae, Bromeliaceae and Orchidaceae. The combination of vascular epiphyte groups with different groups of 15 phorophytes suggests that phorophyte traits provide contrasting environments and that different trait values are needed to colonize these environments. More specifically, epiphytic species with lower specific leaf area (SLA) seem to predominate on larger trees and with higher SLA values on smaller trees. We found phylogenetic signal on the host tree use, suggesting that conservatism of the interactions with phorophytes must have been important throughout the evolution of epiphytes. The tendency to phylogenetic clustering in the epiphytic communities suggests the influence of environmental filters represented by phorophyte traits structuring epiphyte assemblages. More basal clades of phorophytes showed different phylogenetic composition mainly due to the presence of different epiphytic monilophyte clades on these trees. Epiphytic angiosperms occurred mainly on those trees belonging to eurosids. The preference of epiphytes for phorophytes seems to be influenced by morphological and ecophysiological novelties in some lineages, while other clades kept their ancestral niche. The floristic composition of forests at the origins of epiphytic lineages also appears to influence the association between epiphytes and phorophytes. By using information about the traits and phylogeny of species of vascular epiphytes we can better understand the ecological and historical mechanisms that influence the patterns of association between epiphytes and phorophytes.

to understanding functioning of grasslands communities. Thus, to build a classification based
solely on grasses (family of greater biomass contribution), it is necessary for increasing the
knowledge about complex ecosystems. This work aims to characterize vegetation dynamics
by species and by functional types of grasses of two RS physiographic regions (Depressão
Central-Santa Maria and Campanha-Bagé) under different managements. The evaluated
treatments were: natural pasture and natural pasture overseeded with cool season species
(Bagé) and natural pasture submitted to burning and grazing treatments (Santa Maria). For
this, permanent transects were used in order to represent the different communities at paddock
level. Vegetation dynamics was evaluated using procedures of BOTANAL method. Tillers of
grasses with contributions exceeding 3% of total aboveground biomass were collected for
subsequent measurement of the attributes specific leaf area (AFE) and leaves dry matter
content (TMS). Burned treatments presented greater contribution of Andropogon lateralis,
while in grazed treatments there was a greater species diversity. Introduction of cool season
species combined with fertilizer promotes an increase of species characterized by resources´
capture. TMS was more stable for species linked to capturing resources strategy and AFE was
more robust for species characterized by resources conservation. Therefore, until a regional
data basis were developed, it is recommended to use both attributes for future research. / Tipos funcionais de plantas definidos a partir de atributos morfológicos são
fundamentais para o entendimento do funcionamento de comunidades campestres. Desta
maneira, a construção de uma tipologia baseada apenas em gramíneas (família de maior
contribuição), torna-se necessária para o avanço do conhecimento sobre ecossistemas
complexos. Este trabalho tem por objetivo caracterizar duas regiões fisiográficas do RS
(Depressão Central-Santa Maria e Campanha-Bagé) sob distintos manejos quanto à dinâmica
vegetacional por espécies e por tipos funcionais de gramíneas. Os tratamentos avaliados
foram: pastagem natural e pastagem natural com introdução de espécies hibernais (Bagé) e
pastagem natural submetida a tratamentos de queima e pastejo (Santa Maria). Para isto, foram
dispostas transectas fixas de modo a representar as diferentes comunidades em nível de
potreiro. Foi avaliada a dinâmica vegetacional utilizando os procedimentos do método
BOTANAL. Foram coletados afilhos das gramíneas com contribuição superior a 3% da
biomassa aérea total para posterior medida dos atributos área foliar específica (AFE) e teor de
matéria seca da folha (TMS). Os tratamentos queimados tiveram maior contribuição de
Andropogon lateralis, enquanto nos tratamentos pastejados houve uma maior diversidade de
espécies. A introdução de espécies de estação fria, aliada à adubação, promove um acréscimo
das espécies caracterizadas por captura de recursos. O TMS se mostrou mais estável para
espécies ligadas à estratégia de captura de recursos e a AFE mais robusta para as espécies
caracterizadas pela conservação de recursos. Por tanto, até que se desenvolva uma base
regional de dados, recomenda-se que futuras pesquisas continuem a utilizar os dois atributos.

The resilience of understorey vegetation and soil to increasing nitrogen and disturbances in boreal forests and the subarctic ecosystemManninen, O. (Outi) 17 May 2016 (has links)
Abstract
Climate change and its warming effects on vegetation and soils are a widely recognized phenomenon. In addition to warming, the understorey vegetation in northern environments has been subjected to several environmental changes, such as increasing nitrogen (N) and other disturbances. This thesis examines the effects of N-fertilization and disturbances on the vegetation biomass and abundance, plant community composition and plant, soil and microbial N and C pools. Seedling establishment of the most common dwarf shrubs (deciduous Vaccinium myrtillus, evergreens V. vitis-idaea and Empetrum nigrum ssp. hermaphroditum) was investigated after artificial disturbance treatments (vegetation and soil removal). These studies were conducted in the boreal and subarctic ecosystems and in the forest-tundra ecotone in northern Finland.
N-fertilization and disturbances enhanced the amount of graminoids in plant communities, and the recovery ability of graminoids was enhanced after N-fertilization, which homogenized the vegetation and resulted in a new stable state in the plant community. The recovery ability of evergreen dwarf shrubs was low after disturbances. Disturbances created habitats for seed germination, but the seedling establishment of dwarf shrubs studied was still limited by seed availability. N-fertilization had no effect on microbial biomass. Instead, microbial biomass decreased with disturbance treatment in the boreal forest. However, the concentration of N increased in above-ground vegetation, both after N-fertilization and disturbance without any indication of N immobilization, suggesting that plant species captured the available N effectively for their recovery.
The study shows that the likely outcome of N enrichment, when combined with disturbances, is the enhanced growth of graminoids. The seedling establishment does not compensate for the reduction of the vegetative recovery of evergreen dwarf shrubs, which makes evergreen dwarf shrubs sensitive to environmental changes. As the understorey is more resilient to perturbations in the boreal forest than in the subarctic ecosystem, these results emphasize the sensitivity of the vegetation to simultaneous environmental changes in the northernmost ecosystems. Moreover, microbial properties are more resilient to environmental changes than is above-ground vegetation. / Tiivistelmä
Ilmaston muutos ja siitä aiheutuvan lämpenemisen vaikutus kasvillisuuteen ja maaperään on laajasti tunnustettu ilmiö. Lämpenemisen lisäksi pohjoisten alueiden aluskasvillisuuteen kohdistuu useita muutospaineita, kuten lisääntynyt typpipitoisuuden nousu ja kasvillisuutta muokkaavat häiriöt. Tässä tutkimuksessa mitattiin lisääntyneen typpipitoisuuden ja häiriöiden vaikutus kasvillisuuden biomassaan ja runsauteen sekä yhteisörakenteeseen, sekä kasvilajeihin, maaperään ja mikrobibiomassaan sitoutuneen typen ja hiilen määrään. Lisäksi tutkittiin yleisimpien varpukasvien (lehtensä pudottava mustikka, ikivihreät puolukka ja variksenmarja) siemenellistä lisääntymistä kokeellisen häiriön (kasvillisuuden tai maaperän poisto) jälkeen. Tutkimukset tehtiin boreaalisessa ja subarctisessa ekosysteemeissä sekä metsänrajaympäristössä Pohjois-Suomessa.
Typpilannoitus ja häiriöt lisäsivät heinien määrää kasviyhteisöissä. Lisäksi typpilannoitus edisti heinien kasvullista palautumiskykyä häiriön jälkeen, joka johti kasvillisuuden homogenisoitumiseen ja kasviyhteisön uuteen tasapainotilaan. Häiriöt heikensivät ikivihreiden varpujen kasvullista palautumista häiriön jälkeen. Häiriö loi sopivia elinympäristöjä siementen itämiselle, mutta tutkittujen lajien siementen määrä rajoitti siemenellistä lisääntymistä. Typpilannoitus ei vaikuttanut mikrobibiomassaan, mutta häiriö vähensi mikrobibiomassaa boreaalisessa ekosysteemissä. Kuitenkin kasvien typen pitoisuudet lisääntyivät sekä lannoituksen että häiriön jälkeen ilman viitteitä typen sitoutumisesta mikrobibiomassaan. Tämä viittaa siihen, että kasvit käyttävät maaperän typen tehokkaasti häiriön jälkeiseen palautumiseen.
Väitöskirjan mukaan typen lisääntyminen häiriöiden yhteydessä edistää heinien esiintymistä. Koska ikivihreiden varpujen siemenellinen lisääntyminen ei kompensoi häiriöstä kasvulliselle palautumiselle aiheutuvaa haittaa, ovat ikivihreät varvut erityisen herkkiä häiriöille. Aluskasvillisuus on vastustuskykyisempi ympäristön muutoksille boreaalisessa kuin subarktisessa ekosysteemissä, mikä korostaa pohjoisimpien alueiden herkkyyttä yhtäaikaisille ympäristön muutoksille. Maaperän olosuhteet ovat kasvillisuutta kestävämpiä ympäristön muutoksille.

Though succession is a widely studied process, there are only a few reports dealing with changes in plant functional types in the course of succession. Even fewer studies are dealing with agricultural, wet meadows, which are under continuous impact of mowing. The aim of this work is to fill this gap. The studied area is situated in south part of CHKO Slavkovský Les (region of Karlovy Vary, West Bohemia). In previous works grasslands on arable field after 15, 35 and 55 years after abandoned and continual grasslands in last 100 years were detected from historical agriculture maps. The releves on all types of grassland were made and the species pool was investigated. I this work I investigate the functional types and live-history traits of these species and I also look for Ellenberger values and changes of abiotic environment. The result suggests that the late - successional species are long-lived and have slower live cycle (they mature later). Their seeds are less persistent and have worse dispersal ability. Their seedlings are more viable and the species invest more to aboveground biomass than to underground. Late-successional species also flower earlier and shorter time, what seems to be an adaptation to mowing. I found no relationship between successional age in which the species occur and seed mass,...

Multispectral imaging of Sphagnum canopies: measuring the spectral response of three indicator species to a fluctuating water table at Burns BogElves, Andrew 02 May 2022 (has links)
Northern Canadian peatlands contain vast deposits of carbon. It is with growing urgency that we seek a better understanding of their assimilative capacity. Assimilative capacity and peat accumulation in raised bogs are linked to primary productivity of resident Sphagnum species. Understanding moisture-mediated photosynthesis of Sphagnum spp. is central to understanding peat production rates. The relationship between depth to water table fluctuation and spectral reflectance of Sphagnum moss was investigated using multispectral imaging at a recovering raised bog on the southwest coast of British Columbia, Canada. Burns Bog is a temperate oceanic ombrotrophic bog. Three ecohydrological indicator species of moss were chosen for monitoring: S. capillifolium, S. papillosum, and S. cuspidatum. Three spectral vegetation indices (SVIs) were used to characterize Sphagnum productivity: the normalized difference vegetation index 660, the chlorophyll index, and the photochemical reflectance index.
In terms of spectral sensitivity and the appropriateness of SVIs to species and field setting, we found better performance for the normalized difference vegetation index 660 in the discrimination of moisture mediated species-specific reflectance signals. The role that spatiotemporal scale and spectral mixing can have on reflectance signal fidelity was tested. We were specifically interested in the relationship between changes in the local water table and Sphagnum reflectance response, and whether shifting between close spatial scales can affect the statistical strength of this relationship. We found a loss of statistical significance when shifting from the species-specific cm2 scale to the spectrally mixed dm2 scale. This spatiospectral uncoupling of the moisture mediated reflectance signal has implications for the accuracy and reliability of upscaling from plot based measurements. In terms of species-specific moisture mediated reflectance signals, we were able to effectively discriminate between the three indicator species of Sphagnum along the hummock-to-hollow gradient. We were also able to confirm Sphagnum productivity and growth outside of the vascular growing season, establishing clear patterns of reflectance correlated with changes in the local moisture regime. The strongest relationships for moisture mediated Sphagnum productivity were found in the hummock forming species S. capillifolium. Each indicator Sphagnum spp. of peat has distinct functional traits adapted to its preferred position along the ecohydrological gradient. We also discovered moisture mediated and species-specific reflectance phenologies. These phenospectral characteristics of Sphagnum can inform future monitoring work, including the creation of a regionally specific phenospectral library. It’s recommended that further close scale multispectral monitoring be carried out incorporating more species of moss, as well as invasive and upland species of concern. Pervasive vascular reflectance bias in remote sensing products has implications for the reliability of peatland modelling. Avoiding vascular bias, targeted spectral monitoring of Sphagnum indicator species provides a more reliable measure for the modelling of peatland productivity and carbon assimilation estimates. / Graduate
