Influence de la passion du jeu chez les joueurs de poker : étude de recherche mixte / Influence of the gambling passion among poker players: a mixed method study

Morvannou, Adèle January 2017 (has links)
Abstract : Public health is concerned about the risks of gambling problems among poker players. While literature emphasizes the importance of passion among gamblers, its influence among poker players is totally unknown. Until then, using a cross-sectional design is the rule for all the studies interested in passion among gamblers. According to the literature, two forms of passion coexist in players, obsessive passion (OP) and harmonious passion (HP), with a variable intensity, respectively. This sequential mixed method study includes a first cross-sectional (n = 159) and longitudinal (n = 116) quantitative phase, followed by a second descriptive qualitative phase (n = 12) allowing to deepen and contextualize the quantitative data. This study, which is part of a broader study, includes players who consider themselves poker players, recruited throughout Quebec and aims to: 1) assess the association between the two forms of passion and gambling problems; 2) assess the influence, one year later, of the two forms of passion on gambling problems; 3) study the relevance of the concept of passion and to better understand the associations between passion and gambling problems according to the poker players. Multivariate logistic regression and a thematic content analysis were used to the quantitative and qualitative phases, respectively. Cross-sectional and longitudinal results of the first quantitative phase are consistent. In both cases, OP is positively associated with gambling problems at a given time (p <.05) and PO doubles the risk of gambling problems a year later (p <.01) whereas PH is not associated. The qualitative phase generally supports the quantitative results. Poker players interviewed were enthusiastic to speak about the passion of poker and consider that the term ‘passion’ is relevant to describe their relationship with this activity. While the vast majority said they have been or still are passionate about poker, they associate the PO with gambling problems, although it is possible to be passionate without having gambling problems. Moreover, passion is one of the factors influencing gambling behaviours but is not necessarily determinant since a poker player can continue to play without being passionate and conversely being passionate without necessarily playing frequently. Given the relevance of this concept for poker players and its influence on gambling behaviours, it is important to prevent obsessive passion.

Behandling mot alla odds : En kvalitativ studie om den offentliga sektorns förutsättningar för arbete med behandling av spelberoende / Treatment against all odds : A qualitative study on the public sectors prerequisites for working with treatment of a gambling addiction

Ekeroth, Helena, Yngström, Henrik January 2015 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to provide information on the way professionals in Sweden encounter individuals with a gambling addiction, to show how they perceive and reflect on their ability to help and treat these individuals whilst fulfilling their responsibilities to their organization and their client. The study is based on interviews with local authorities, health care representatives, private treatment organizations and a national help organization, all of which specialize on gambling addiction. This is in order to show the full spectrum of gambling problems.  The results of the empirical data have been analyzed using two methods. The first of which is a model developed by Meeuwisse and Swärd (2002), which explains the definition and handling of a social problem. The second method utilizes the “consequences of logic” perspective within the organizational theory. The results indicate that the issue involving gambling addiction is problematic on a national level, in regard to the distribution of responsibilities. This has shown that treatment of gambling addictions is either not performed, or performed under certain restrictions. These problems can be attributed to the lack of a widely used and acknowledged definition of the term gambling addiction. This makes it difficult to judge whether the condition should be treated as a psychiatric disorder, or as an addiction not dissimilar to alcohol or narcotic addictions.

Vinna eller försvinna : En kvalitativ studie om spelberoende / To win or to lose : A qualitative study about gambling addiction

Lärka, Erika, Forslöf, Sarah January 2014 (has links)
This is a qualitative study where the purpose was to investigate what professionals experience to be the reason for an individual to become addicted to gambling and continues to gamble even though it leads to negative consequences. The purpose was also to investigate what the professionals experienced was of importance for an individual to recover from a gambling addiction. The study was based on qualitative semi-structured interviews with knowledgeable individuals in the field. The main findings of the study were that the motivation for individuals with a gambling problem to continue gamble was that they saw gambling as the solution to their problems by winning back lost money. It was common that gambling was an escape from anxiety, guilt, shame, and other gambling-related problems such as financial liabilities. Identification with others in the same situation and a supportive network was important factors for a successful treatment and to recover from a gambling addiction.

Are young adults Sweden's future online casino gamblers? : A multimodal content analysis on how casino gambling is portrayed in gambling video commercials and how they are interpreted by young adults. Additionally how young adults interpret and discuss the content in the commercials.

Göthberg, David, Scheynius, vince January 2021 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to find out how young adults perceive gambling companies' video commercials in Sweden. A fast rise of commercials from gambling companies have evolved in recent years. As of January 2021, 102 companies have been approved for a Swedish gambling license. The total number of people gambling has not increased, but the total turnover has increased rapidly. Online casinos are considered one of the most addictive forms of gambling and therefore researchers claim that commercials from online casinos have the largest effect on people compared to other gambling forms. This makes it interesting to investigate video commercials in relation to young adults who are considered to be the biggest risk group to develop a gambling problem. To gain insight, we selected three video commercials and performed an in-depth analysis based on the method multimodal content analysis. Two focus group interviews were conducted with participants between the ages of 18-24 years. The focus groups were shown three commercials from three different gambling companies and were then asked about their opinion and interpretation of the commercials. The results were further analysed by the study’s theoretical framework of Stuart Hall's (1973) communication model encoding/decoding was used to analyse the video commercials and the answers from the focus groups.  The data from the focus group interviews indicated that gambling commercials could potentially have an impact on influencing young adults ages 18-24 years. The respondent's interpretation was generally negative since the majority of the participants disliked the video commercials and thought that the commercials were disturbing. Among the fifteen participants, three of them responded positively to some of the commercials and got more interested in wanting to start playing at online casinos after viewing the three video commercials. This suggests that gambling video commercials could have a negative influence.

Brahimi, Gia, Aslan, Sevda January 2020 (has links)
The purpose of our study is to from a sociological perspective, illustrate individuals with gambling addiction and gain an understanding of their experiences and actions regarding the path into gambling addiction. This study was based on a qualitative research method in which empirical data collection was conducted through eight qualitative interviews, in order to investigate the experience and prevalence of adult gambling addiction and what effect this had on the individual. What makes gambling addiction unique is that it is a social phenomenon that affects many and cannot be simply linked to a certain class or origin. It is an addiction that sneaks on until you are stuck. And since it is also an addiction you can exercise completely separated from the public in your own home, it often takes a very long time before your immediate surroundings see that there are problems. In Sweden many of us are doing well, you have a huge social protection and do not have to fight every day for survival. We have a good life compared to many other countries. Previous research shows that many adults have experience of this kind of addiction and without the right help it can lead to them being left in a situation they cannot cope with. The collected empirical analysis was based on the theorists Lars-Erik Berg, Anthony Giddens, Randall Collins and Ulrich Beck. We could conclude that gambling addiction is a societal problem and needs more attention, something our informants also mentioned during the interviews. It is therefore of sociological interest to investigate which social and social circumstances contribute to the individual's influence and consequences games of money have had.

ÄR VI STARKARE TILLSAMMANS?- EN STUDIE OM SAMVERKAN MELLAN IDEELLA ORGANISATIONER OCH SOCIALTJÄNSTEN I BETYDELSE FÖR INDIVIDER MED SPELPROBLEMATIK

Oskarsson, Moa, Gaberud, Felicia January 2020 (has links)
The aim of this study was to explore employees attitudes within the social serviceand non-profit organizations, regarding difficulties and possibilities in a potentialcollaboration between these two sectors concerning individuals with gamblingproblems. The empirical material is based on qualitative methods, thus semistructured interviews were performed with social workers working with individualswith gambling problems in the social service and in one non-profit organization ina city in Sweden. When analyzing the empirical data we applied three theories;Danermark’s collaboration theory, Hasensfeld’s theories about Human ServiceOrganization, Scott’s and Abrahamson & Andersen’s systems theory. The mainresult indicates that difficulties in a collaboration are due to lack of insight into eachothers organizations, different organizational structures and conditions, and also animbalance in the interdependence relationship among the two organizations.Additionally, the study shows possibilities when it comes to exchange ofknowledge and operating as a complement with one and other when supporting thetarget group.

Ärleskog, Caroline January 2019 (has links)
The present study aims to, through a critical age perspective, describe and illustrate the structural conditions of the age category of children based on the information about treatment for gambling problems provided by municipal websites. The study has a quantitative character and in order to answer the study's questions, a content analysis of municipal websites (N = 119) was conducted. 52,1% of those websites contained information on treatment for gambling problems (n = 62). The result showed a statistically significant difference in the distribution regarding information by municipal websites on treatment for gambling problems ( χ² = 9,478a , df = 2, p = ,009) and treatment methods ( χ² = 13,400a , df =2, p = ,001) between the structural age categories. Throughout, age as an organizing principle was updated, and the age category of children was directed to information about treatment for gambling problems through municipal websites to a considerably lower extent than other age categories. This brought to light an age hierarchy and from a children perspective it is possible to state that children's structural conditions were unequal. When this was consistent, it is reasonable to assume that there is systematic inequality, which raises social stratification.

Missbruk av spel om pengar : Socialtjänstens förutsättningar att arbeta enligt den reviderade socialtjänstlagen / Gambling addiction : The social services' prerequisites to work according to the revised social services act

Andersson, Linnéa, Gustavsson, Camilla January 2019 (has links)
The aim was to examine how social workers perceive their prerequisites to work according to the social services act regarding gambling addiction. Seven social workers from six municipalities were interviewed in a qualitative study. The result showed that most feel that they have good prerequisites due to both individual and contextual factors. The results also showed that the informants work differently and that few use recommended methods. The informants stated that they primarily consider whether the client's needs can be met through outpatient care. A majority stated that they have sufficient knowledge of gambling problems, the revised social services act and the social services' expanded area of responsibility. Collaboration with health care was described as challenging. The main benefit of the legislative changes was stated to be the opportunity to help more people. The study's most important conclusions were that preventive work and collaboration between authorities should be prioritized.
