La presente ricerca si propone di ricostruire la biografia intellettuale di Giovanni Battista Guadagnini (1723-1807), esponente di primo piano del giansenismo italiano del secondo Settecento. Attraverso lo studio di opere inedite e di numero rilevante di lettere scambiate con i principali protagonisti della cultura religiosa del suo tempo , si è cercato di ricostruire il pensiero teologico-politico di Guadagnini in un arco cronologico compreso tra la fine degli anni Sessanta del Settecento e i primi anni del XIX secolo. / This research aims at presenting the intellectual biography of Giovanni Battista Guadagnini (1723-1807), one of the most important exponents of the 18th century Italian Jansenism. Through the study of unpublished works and a significant number of letters exchanged with the main protagonists of the religious culture of his time, we tried to study the Guadagnini’s theological-political thought between the end of the 18th century and the first years of the 19th century.

Marcado por fortes tendências para o gênero ensaístico, num intercâmbio constante e instável entre Ficção, História e Experiência Pessoal, o presente estudo tem por base os romances Os Malavoglia (Giovanni Verga), Pai patrão (Gavino Ledda), Vita e Stória de Nanetto Pipetta (Aquiles Bernardi), O quatrilho, A cocanha e A babilônia (José Clemente Pozenato), Juliano Pavolini e A suavidade do vento (Cristovão Tezza), Mamma, son tanto felice, O mundo inimigo e Vista parcial da noite (Luiz Ruffato). O corte epistemológico pode ser representado por duas trajetórias: a) da Itália para a América – Brasil; b) das pequenas comunidades do interior para a cidade grande. No mundo de descendência italiana imigrante, as simulações e as ilusões elaboradas pela Ficção estão mais próximas da Realidade que aquelas proporcionadas por institutos e associações, em seus argumentos e artimanhas para “resgatar as raízes” e “cultivar as tradições”, representadas por eventos como noites italianas, jantares típicos, encontros de famílias e programas radiofônicos. Nos romances, a ausência desses “eventos” é absoluta; não há brindes, nem missas de encomendação e sepultamento. Ao fim e ao cabo, o homem do campo, pós-moderno, descendente dos antigos imigrantes italianos, tornou-se um ser globalizado sem sair de casa. / This study in the manner of an essay reflects a constant but unstable interchange between Fiction, History and Personal Experience. It is based on the following novels: Os Malavoglia (Giovanni Verga), Pai patrão (Gavino Ledda), Vita e Stória de Nanetto Pipetta (Aquiles Bernardi), O quatrilho, A cocanha and A babilônia (José Clemente Pozenato), Juliano Pavolini and A suavidade do vento (Cristovão Tezza), Mamma, son tanto felice, O mundo inimigo and Vista parcial da noite (Luiz Ruffato). Two epistemological paths have a point of departure and a point of arrival: a) from Italy to Brazil / America; b) from small backcountry communities to the big city. Among the descendants of italian immigrants the simulations and illusions processed by fiction are closer to reality than those offered by institutions and associations in their argueing and tricking for "retrieval of the roots" and "reclaiming traditions", embodied by events like italian evenings, typical dinners, family encounters, and radio programs. In the novels, there is an absolute absence of such "events", no glasses are raised in honor of anything, no requiem and inhumation masses are held. Post-modern countryside people of Italian descent in Brazil have become globalized without even leaving home.

Os conceitos presentes nesse livro, como o famoso cinema de poesia ou a linguagem da realidade, norteiam a nossa escolha de outros teóricos, os quais nos auxiliam na tarefa de comprovar que tanto Boccaccio quanto Pasolini realizam operações metalingüísticas, sendo que as molduras narrativas por eles criadas explicitam a auto-reflexão acerca do fazer artístico, funcionando, desse modo, como marcas autorais. Assim, as duas versões de Decameron não se comunicam apenas pelo tema, mas pelo modo como as narrativas são estruturadas, pois Pasolini constrói a sua obra por meio de soluções cinematográficas que remetem à construção do discurso realizada por Boccaccio / The present work does an analysis of the intersemiotic intercourse established between the literary work Il Decameron (1348-1353), of Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-1375), and the namesake movie, of Pier Paolo Pasolini (1922-1975), regarding as the main objective to find out the artistic transcreation operated by Pasolini, above all, in what touches the metalinguistic constructions present in the literary text that are cinematographically retraced by the film maker. In the syncretic text, the metalanguage is intrinsically bound to the poetical, following Pasolini’s own theoretical conceptions exposed in Empirismo Eretico (2000). The concepts in this book, like the famous cinema of poetry or the language of reality, guide the selection of other theorists, who help in the quest to prove that both Boccaccio as well as Pasolini make metalinguistic operations, as the narrative frames created by him expound the introspection of the artistic labour, working, this way, as authorial marks. Thus, the Decameron’s two versions do not communicate only through the theme, but through the way their narratives are structured because Pasolini’s work is built hereby cinematographic solutions which allude to Boccaccio’s discourse construction

The aim of this thesis is to illustrate the phenomenon of the transfer of the transalpine landscape motifs in graphic art into the works of Italian engravers at the beginning of the six- teenth century, and by using detailed analysis of these prints lead to a decision as to why these transfers occur so frequently, mainly in the years 1500-1520. Because only brief mentions of these transfers are found in the available literature on this topic, and then often only as a statement, I decided to tackle this phenomenon in the context of landscape specifications. In the introductory chapter there will be a concise overview of the cultural situation of the humanistic society, including its assumptions and a brief evolution of depiction of landscape art. Additionally there will be a chapter about the terminology used, which in addition to clarifying the terminology also helps to further the description of the proce- ss itself. The main part will of course be a chapter dedicated into selected items. There will also be descriptions of the graphic works of selected Italian engravers, especially in the comparison of transferred landscape motifs from works by Albrecht Dürer and Lucas van Leyden. Mozartean Gesture and Rhetoric in Hummel's Concerto for Trumpet

Hummel's Concerto for Trumpet (Concerto a Tromba principale) is overtly operatic and is stylistically reminiscent of Mozart's Don Giovanni. Using the methodology of Leonard Ratner and Wye J. Allanbrook, it is possible to explore gesture and rhetoric in Hummel's Concerto for Trumpet and Mozart's Don Giovanni, and achieve a deeper understanding of the stylistic similarities shared between the two works. In the third movement, dance is the most significant link to Don Giovanni. In the second movement, Hummel alternates between the emotions of Donna Anna and Don Ottavio as they appear in act 1, scene 13. The first movement makes extensive use of contrasting topics identified with buffa and seria characters to advance the musical narrative. Comparing Hummel's concerto and Mozart's opera is a hermeneutical approach that illuminates several performance practice implications. Knowing the expressive similarities and rhetorical strategies common to both works clarifies several issues, such as tempo, ornamentation, and above all, expression. Though Mozart's Don Giovanni and Hummel's Concerto for Trumpet are unequal in significance, it would be valuable to any interpretation of Hummel's concerto if the performer and audience acknowledge that the work is rhetorically and stylistically similar to Mozart's Don Giovanni.

The Stories We Tell: Novellas, News, and the Uses of Casuistry in Early Modern Europe

This dissertation examines representations of legal, theological, and medical modes of case thinking and case narration in the novella collections of four early modern authors: Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-1375), Marguerite de Navarre (1492-1549), Matteo Bandello (c.1485-1562), and Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616). It further investigates how these collections perform and problematize practices of narrating and interpreting cases while framing such practices within the context of the navigation of daily news. Indeed, keen observers of the capacity of informal and formal networks to circulate information and opinions in unpredictable ways and on scales unprecedented, these authors also used the novella genre—and the polysemy of the term “novella”—to intervene in contemporary debates on the value of novelty and on the merits of popularizing expert knowledge. I argue that the early modern novella’s role as a literary mediator between professional forms of the case and popular forms of the news report was instrumental to its durable transnational European success. Over the course of this dissertation, I show how these collections depict the art of storytelling qua case narration as an essential ethical component of professional casuistries and of everyday information exchanges. I draw attention to specific professional inflections of the case-novella-news nexus, in order to highlight how each author conceives—and makes the case for—the indispensability of storytelling to spiritual and civic life. I demonstrate that a juridical approach to cases and novelty takes precedence in Boccaccio’s Decameron. I show that, in contrast, Marguerite de Navarre’s Heptaméron relies on distinctly theological conceptions of cases and news. I proceed to compare the type of moral casuistry found in the Heptaméron to that found in Matteo Bandello’s Novelle. Finally, I investigate the consequences of Cervantes’ predilection for a medical approach to case analysis, novelty, and news in his Novelas ejemplares. The broader ambition of this investigation is twofold: first, to contribute a literary and historical perspective to contemporary methodological debates on the value of case thinking in the human sciences and in the liberal professions, and second, to pave the way for an exploration of the casuistical foundations of modern journalism at a time when its epistemological and ethical priorities are sorely in need of being reassessed.

Imago Clipeata, the Liturgy, and Giovanni Pisano's Man of Sorrows Lectern: A Classical Reappropriation in the Gothic Era

The monumental sculpture, especially the pulpits, of the father and son duo, Nicola and Giovanni Pisano, have often been compared to ancient Roman and early Christian sarcophagi. Giovanni produced a pulpit with two accompanying lecterns for the Pisa Cathedral, which is just a few steps away from the Camposanto, a “holy field”, or cemetery, built around sacred soil from Golgotha which serves to house a huge collection of sarcophagi. Iconography, composition, relief style, and even the materiality of Giovanni’s Pisa pulpit is in part governed by, and connected to, these sarcophagi. This influence is especially highlighted by the Epistles lectern, which depicts a half-length Christ as the Man of Sorrows encircled about and raised aloft by two angels. This unusual depiction of the Man of Sorrows seems to be appropriating a long tradition of the imago clipeata, or visual apotheosis. Giovanni borrows this classical imagery and updates it to reflect contemporary Christianity. The presence of the classical clipeata on the lectern underlines the two natures of Christ, which is a main characteristic of the iconography of the Man of Sorrows. The lectern’s clipeata and the reference to sarcophagi establishes a connection to ritual, but in this case Christian ritual, namely the sermon and the Eucharist. The imagery embodies an affective focus on the love and humanity of Christ as the crux of salvation, a characteristic of thirteenth- and fourteenth-century preaching. The drapery and textile, which act as the frame of the clipeata on the lectern, allude to the tramezzo, or choir screen, and liturgical cloths found at the high altar—both are liturgical accessories that aid the viewer during the consecration of the Eucharist. Giovanni Pisano adopts this antique imagery and recontextualizes it in an early-fourteenth century Christian setting as it becomes a creative commentary on the liturgy, devotion, and significance of place at the cathedral of Pisa.

Curating the Americas: Library Practices and Early Histories of the New World Between Spain and Venice

This dissertation investigates how a network of Venetian and Spanish scholars placed ancient texts and new geographic information about the Americas in dialogue to create new histories of the modern world, from the 1510s to the 1550s. I focus in particular on the print production and manuscript exchanges of Venetian state officials Giovanni Battista Ramusio, Pietro Bembo, and Andrea Navagero, and Spanish state officials Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo and Diego Hurtado de Mendoza. Under the custodianship of Navagero, Bembo, and Ramusio, the Library of St. Mark, donated to the Republic of Venice by the Greek cardinal Bessarion in 1468, functioned as a site of knowledge production. The gatekeeping and information management practices that these men carried out as caretakers of this politically charged library of Greek and Latin books informed their manuscript exchanges and print production. Geographic news from the Americas in the form of letters, accounts, maps, and printed works posed a particular challenge to classical understandings of the globe, and the Spanish and Venetian intellectuals examined here together faced the challenge of apprehending the new and determining the role and relevance of ancient texts such as those of Ptolemy, Plato, Pliny, and Strabo in the contemporary world. Through their histories, summaries, anthologies, and commentaries, they made news into history, curating the presentation of the Americas for their reading publics. Their published works fixed in print the fluid correspondence networks and manuscript exchanges that enabled their creation, making the private public with a great deal of mediation, selection, and suppression or selective acknowledgment of sources and dialogues. By reading the printed works together with the manuscript backstory, I reveal how these scholars pushed at the boundaries of what was expected of them as Spanish or Venetian state agents. Their curated presentation of information about the Americas obscured the porosity of intellectual exchange among Spanish and Venetian intellectuals at the time, and the extent to which the production of Americana in Venice is not just a Venetian story, but also a Spanish one.
