The Crucifixion of Marriage Equality: Analyses of Protestant Christian Subcultures

Stokes, Ethan C 17 May 2014 (has links)
This project is a study of how various Protestant Christian subcultures construct their identity and perceptions of LGBT couples in the 21st century United States sociopolitical context. Through an extensive content analysis of 105 sermon transcripts from www.sermoncentral.com, this project allows for a more accurate interpretation of Protestant Christian subgroups’ (via individual perceptions of pastors through their sermon rhetoric) stances on the issues of gay rights in the modern United States. Additionally, I use 2012 GSS survey data as background findings to frame and illustrate the relevance of the results from the content analysis. The content analysis findings show that various pastors from the sample construct their views of gay men and lesbians by 1) alienating LGBT couples, 2) enhancing in-group Protestant identities, and 3) calling for political action to maintain group norms.

Patterns of survivorship and susceptibility to rust infection in a population of Arisaema triphyllum

Barton, Ksenia O. January 1998 (has links)
Field studies of a population of Arisaema triphyllum affected by the systemic rust Uromyces ari-triphylli were conducted to examine dynamics of disease transmission and to identify factors influencing plant susceptibility to rust infection. Of undiseased plants that developed foliar infections during the growing season, 55% possessed active resistance to the rust disease, and were able to prevent the foliar infection from becoming a systemic one. Flowering increased the susceptibility of plants to both Mar and systemic infections. A phenotypic selection study was carried out to estimate selection on five plant traits and to determine the role of foliar infections of U. ari-triphylli in mediating selection. Multivariate path analysis suggests that both leaf diameter and a general size factor are under positive directional selection. Pathogen-mediated selection coefficients are small, but comparable in magnitude to overall selection coefficients (15%, on average), indicating the potential importance of diseases as selective agents in nature.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of hydrocortisone and acetaminofen substances in inflammation and neuropeptide expression by histopathologic and immunohistochemical analysis. For this, 63 rats were divided into 3 batches of study (n = 21) according to combat pain therapy: Li control LII- topical administration of Otosporin® for 10 minutes after the bleaching treatment and administration route LIIIoral Tylenol® 30 minutes before the bleaching with hydrogen peroxide at 35% and then 12 for 12 hours. In all study groups in left maxilla was performed treatment whitener placebo and right jaw received three applications of 15 minutes a whitening gel 35% hydrogen peroxide base, totaling 45 minutes of contact of the whitening gel dental substrate. The times of the animals were euthanized immediately after 24 and 48 hours after the bleaching treatment. After the euthanasia of animals, the pieces were processed and the first molar of each jaw was analyzed histologically the degree of inflammation and analysis of immunohistochemistry to verify the presence of the neuropeptides SP and CGRP. The data were submitted to statistical nonparametric Kruskal Wallis test followed by Dunn's test for individual comparisons, being observed on histopathologic total cellular disorganization analysis, extensive areas of necrosis in whitened groups, and the group that received treatment with Otosporin® showed better results. In immunohistochemical analysis, obtained positive immunostaining in all groups, including control, but the whitened immunostaining groups was stronger, and the group that received treatment with Otosporin® showed the best results. We conclude that the use of Otosporin® after bleaching treatment minimizes the side effects of this cosmetic procedure. / FAPESP: 2015/01366-4

"We Have a Longstanding Critical Problem…All Right?": The Promotion of Domestic Crisis in President Obama's Health Care Rhetoric

Kostka, Phillip M. Jr. 21 July 2011 (has links)
Shortly after his inauguration in 2009, President Barack Obama set to work on health care reform. Little more than a year later the President signed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, which achieved a goal of so many previous administrations, into law. In order to encourage the passage of health care reform, Obama promoted a health care crisis in America. This study examines the President's rhetoric surrounding the health care crisis in order to explore the characteristics of a potential sub-genre of presidential discourse—domestic promoted crisis. Textual analysis of the President's remarks on health care revealed five strategies used in order to promote this crisis to the American people and encourage legislation to resolve it. In addition to characteristics, the concept of promotion of crises is discussed. / Master of Arts

Imago Clipeata, the Liturgy, and Giovanni Pisano's Man of Sorrows Lectern: A Classical Reappropriation in the Gothic Era

Ableman, Joslyn Elise 17 April 2021 (has links)
The monumental sculpture, especially the pulpits, of the father and son duo, Nicola and Giovanni Pisano, have often been compared to ancient Roman and early Christian sarcophagi. Giovanni produced a pulpit with two accompanying lecterns for the Pisa Cathedral, which is just a few steps away from the Camposanto, a “holy field”, or cemetery, built around sacred soil from Golgotha which serves to house a huge collection of sarcophagi. Iconography, composition, relief style, and even the materiality of Giovanni’s Pisa pulpit is in part governed by, and connected to, these sarcophagi. This influence is especially highlighted by the Epistles lectern, which depicts a half-length Christ as the Man of Sorrows encircled about and raised aloft by two angels. This unusual depiction of the Man of Sorrows seems to be appropriating a long tradition of the imago clipeata, or visual apotheosis. Giovanni borrows this classical imagery and updates it to reflect contemporary Christianity. The presence of the classical clipeata on the lectern underlines the two natures of Christ, which is a main characteristic of the iconography of the Man of Sorrows. The lectern’s clipeata and the reference to sarcophagi establishes a connection to ritual, but in this case Christian ritual, namely the sermon and the Eucharist. The imagery embodies an affective focus on the love and humanity of Christ as the crux of salvation, a characteristic of thirteenth- and fourteenth-century preaching. The drapery and textile, which act as the frame of the clipeata on the lectern, allude to the tramezzo, or choir screen, and liturgical cloths found at the high altar—both are liturgical accessories that aid the viewer during the consecration of the Eucharist. Giovanni Pisano adopts this antique imagery and recontextualizes it in an early-fourteenth century Christian setting as it becomes a creative commentary on the liturgy, devotion, and significance of place at the cathedral of Pisa.

Les professeurs de l'université de Paris au XIXème siècle et le droit romain / The professors at the university of Paris in the XIXth century and roman law

Ducret, Patricia 16 November 2012 (has links)
Our research concerning the professors of Roman Law at the University of Paris in the XIXth century attempts to demonstrate the emergence of a historical school of thought. It’s prosoprography that brings to light the Professors’ geographical and social environment through marriage contracts, declarations of inheritance and inventories after death. After examining at the Romanists’ private life,we studied both their career paths from their PhD studies up to their professorships and the means of access to this Professorship. We also intended to highlight their career choices : research, teaching, administrative responsibilities, practice of law, judiciary or politics. Finally, we aimed to determine the extent to which a Romanist historical school of thought existed in spite of the exegetical straightjacket. To reach that goal, we separated them from the Civilists and looked at their own specificities as they differed in both the conception and the methods of teaching as shown by their scientific output. Our sources led us to draw on their works to determine which fields of Roman Law they would have favoured. The Romanists succeeded in ensuring the triumph of an evolutionary approach, despite being under an exegetical constraint, which gradually built up to what we can definitively call a “Romanist historical school of thought
