Schumann's Op. 25: Finding the Narrative Within

Gaarder, Renee Danielle 07 December 2012 (has links) (PDF)
Many of the song cycles written by Schumann have been studied over the years and it is well known that his most prolific time of song production was the year 1840. Myrthen, Op. 25, has been studied less than some of his other cycles because it calls into question the modern view of the song cycle and for this reason is difficult to classify. What is most difficult about the classification of Op. 25 is that there is no immediately apparent narrative. In addition, the musical relationships which exist are usually considered to be of little consequence. What scholars are left with is a group of songs that in Schumann's mind constituted a song cycle but to the modern eye seems to be anything but. The most prevalent view concerning the organization of Op. 25 is that it is a collection of songs. Given his view of Lieder and his compositional process, in addition to the fact that it was presented to Clara as a wedding gift, I believe that Schumann had a specific organization in mind for this work. In this thesis I argue that due to the way in which Schumann conceived of and composed song cycles, the musical relationships are not what bind Op. 25 together although these relationships do exist. Instead, the organization hinges mainly on the text which represents a narrative of the relationship between Robert and Clara, which differs from the modern view of what classifies a group of songs as a cycle.

Was wird mir jede Stunde so bang: (2021)

Drude, Matthias 27 February 2023 (has links)

Andersson, Rasmus January 2015 (has links)

The Mignon Song Settings of Robert Schumann and Hugo Wolf

Crenshaw, Patricia Sam 08 1900 (has links)
The poems of Mignon have inspired song writers for almost two centuries. They have served as the texts for more composers than almost any other single set of poetry. The Romantic composers were especially fond of the words. The poems are full of sadness and yearning and composers found they could be set in different moods. Some settings are in major tonalities while other settings of the same poem can be found in minor. Simple harmonies are used in some settings while others contain more complex harmonies. There are those composers who would have Mignon appear as a lost soul throughout all the poems with each song quietly sung, while others use a variety of dynamics adding drama to the setting and picturing Mignon as full of optimism at the end.

Les années de voyage ou la recherche de l'unité : parcours initiatiques et utilitarisme dans "Les Années de voyage de Wilhelm Meister ou les Renonçants" de J.W. von Goethe / "Wilhelm Meister's journeyman years" or the research of unity : initiatory paths and utilitarianism in "Wilhelm Meister's journeyman years or the Renunciants" J.W. von Goethe

Hubner-Preney, Bettina 03 December 2012 (has links)
The German Enlightenment witnessed the emergence of a particular kind of anthropological reflection considering man in its totality, going beyond the dualisms of soul and body, spirit and sensitivity, nature and culture. This work sets out to analyze Johann Wolfgang Goethe’s ultimate novel taking place in early nineteenth century Germany — Wilhelm Meister's Journeyman Years, or the Renunciants — through that perspective. It demonstrates how a sense of unity underlies the apparent multiplicity of this novel. Focusing my research on the study of the initiatory journey allowed me to transcend commonly accepted interpretations. Indeed, the reader is provided with a new context of understanding for this hermetic novel written in old age, in the same period as Faust II, from 1825 to 1829. Goethe observes and depicts the existential difficulties of his era and offers the following solution to the individual: one should strive towards an inner ontological independence in order to face the uncertainties of the external world. His educational project consists in uniting the quintessence of hermetic philosophy, a millenary tradition (“die alte Wahrheit”) inherent in initiatory masterhood, and the needs of the modern era. Goethe thus reveals how the ability to surpass oneself thanks to a successful individuation and a sense of unity within oneself can be put at the service of the common interest.

For that we left from the hypotesis of which the repetition is a psychoanalytic concept marking the end of analysis. To comprove that, after a brief incursion by Goethe’s biography and the location of the book in the german’s literature history, it was necessary to get deep into our comprehension on the entry of the subject in the language, on the lack from there and differentiate of the lack relative to the castration. Next we lean over on the wish perspective from Aristotle in De Anima and Nicomachean Ethics from there to understand the construction of this concept in the Psychoanalysis. Beginnig with the text Project for a scientific psychology by Freud we follow up to arriving in Lacan and his comprehension of das Ding. That said, it was possible to base the structure of the subject of langage while lacking and to understand the paradox exposed in the pact between Faust and Mephistopheles. The phantasy was the next point to be study. Therefore, we came back to the firsts Freud’s clinical reports and we follow the construction of this notion. We returned to the concept of unheimlich to understand the anguish that wraps the bascule inherent to the fantasmatic veil. We follow with Lacan in his seminar about anguish untill his seminar about the logic of phantasy. Than, we analysed two moments of Goethe’s text – the relationship of Faust with Gretchen and, in a second moment, his relationship with Helen. We realized how in the litterary text the bias through wich the phantasy can be seen leaves space to the real appears. From the advent of the real in the relationship with Helena comes up to Faust the possibility of a new know-how different from what had been done so far. This contingency opens the possibility to think the repetition as the advento f the new, as Lacan works since 1964. With that in our horizon, we follow the constrution of this concept from Freud in two moments: in 1914 and in 1920. Next, we turno to the lacanian text and divide then in two parts: before and after 1964. We realized then that the written texts or seminars given up to 1964 were directed to the freudian notion of compulsion to repetition. Even so, it is possible to observe in this period some seeds of his future position. The considerations explained here led us to consider the end of faust as the relaization of repetition as a contingency, a bon heur to wich teh subject under analysis can choose by the of his course / O objetivo dessa tese foi pesquisar as contribuições de Fausto de Goethe à Psicanálise.

Possebon, Ennio Lamoglia 08 May 2009 (has links)
This work investigates the principles and bases of Goethe\'s Theory of Colours (Farbenlehre\") as part of his studies as a Natures scientist. A translation of Goethe\'s essay on scientific methods (\"Kautelen des Beobachters\") and another on prismatic experiments (\"Beitrag zur Optik\"), where he sets the bases of his 30 years work on colours studies, are presented in this work too. The papers translated here were never before available in Portuguese, and they represent relevant subsidies for a comprehensive understanding of the \"Farbenlehre\". This research aims to contribute to the recovery of the Goethean\'s Phenomenology for the cultural enviroment of our days.

O conceito de protoforma orgânica na determinação da gênese e da natureza do organo-vivente: individuação, forma e vida / The concept of organic protoform in determining of the genesis and nature of the living organism: Individuation, form and life

Santos, Guilherme Francisco 08 August 2017 (has links)
The present thesis proposes the constitution of the concept of organic protoform with which we aim to deal with problematic relations between the general notions of life and individuality. Particularly with regard to the problem of its origins, understood here as the privileged moment of the genesis of organo-vital beings, at which moment the tension between life and individuality is expressed more clearly. Life, individuality and origins are general notions and themes of research and philosophical and scientific reflection of all time. The concept of organic protoform emerges from the observation of several elements directed to a historical-conceptual soil of scientific investigations and natural philosophy. This basis is constituted by our investigation into a set of particular historical expressions which we investigate in our thesis, namely the concepts of monera, Urschleim and Urpflanze. We structured the concept of organic protoform from two notions-axis that guided its meaning. The first is the notion of a polarity between a preindividual condition and an individual condition as a constituent of the organic form. The second is the notion of organic memory as a psychic property of organic forms universally present, from its most elementary levels. It is therefore a question of understanding how the problematic relationship between life and individuality takes place and how the question of its origins can contribute to this understanding. Thus, the concept of organic protoform was structured within a morphological vision in which the notions of form and of organic intertwine with the notions of life and of individuality.
