A Study on the Influence of In-svice English Teaching Graduate Programs on Senior High School English Teachers

Huang,Su Duan Unknown Date (has links)
關鍵字: 在職進修 研究所 高中英文老師 專業態度 專業知能 教室實務 / Teachers’ professional development is the key to teacher quality. It encompasses pre-service teacher education and in-service teacher training. In Taiwan, in an effort to promote English teachers’ continual learning, in-service English teaching graduate programs were started in 1999 in place of what was called "Forty-Credit Program". This study aims to investigate the influence of the in-service English teaching graduate programs on senior high school English teachers. Three methods, questionnaire survey, interview, and classroom observation, were used. In the part of questionnaire survey, a questionnaire was designed to elicit participants’ self-perceptions of the influence the in-service English teaching graduate programs have on their professional attitudes, professional knowledge and classroom practice. Then, a general survey was conducted island-wide. Ninety-eight schools responded with 109 valid questionnaires. Follow-up phone interviews were conducted with seven willing respondents to further explore how they apply their new knowledge to their teaching. Regarding the classroom observation, two groups of English teachers from the same school participated in this part of study. In the first group were two teachers with the in-service English teaching graduate program experience while in the second group were two teachers without the experience. The teaching of one lesson conducted by the four teachers were observed, video-taped, analyzed, and compared. Face-to-face interviews were conducted with each teacher after the observational data were collected. The purpose of the interview was to know the reasons why they adopted current ways of teaching. This study has the following important findings. Firstly, in terms of professional attitudes, the in-service programs affect participants most in their motivation to try out new teaching methods, professional confidence, enthusiasm for English teaching and motivation to partake in in-service training activities. Secondly, in the aspect of knowledge about the English language, participants benefit from the programs the most in their own reading and writing ability as well as in knowledge of syntax, morphology, and discourse analysis. Thirdly, with regard to classroom practice, the enrichment of professional knowledge helps a lot in participants' application of new techniques to their instruction of vocabulary, grammatical structure, reading and writing. It also contributes to participants’ use of varieties of learning resources and materials. Lastly, the application of the new knowledge leads to the differences between teachers who have the in-service English teaching graduate program experience and those who do not. These findings have rich implications for the relationship between in-service English teaching graduate programs and the improvement of English teaching practice of senior high school English teachers, an area well worth more attention and research. Key words: in-service graduate programs senior high school English teachers professional attitudes professional knowledge classroom practice

Oladunjoye, Matthew O. 05 1900 (has links)
This study investigates different factors related to master's degree graduates 1965-1976 in Physical Education at North Texas State University in order to gain information about the master's degree program's relevance to the subsequent career. The findings of the study support the following conclusions: 1. Approximately two-thirds of the graduates thought the program had satisfactorily prepared them for their current positions. 2. Seventy per cent of the graduates suggested there should be a core of courses required in the master's degree program in physical education. The courses most often included in the responses regarding core courses were Research Perspective in Physical Education, Thesis, Mechanical Analysis of Motor Skills, Professional Preparation in Physical Education, Administrative Problems in Physical Education, and Testing in Physical Education. 3. The greatest strengths of the master's degree program in physical education at North Texas State University as reported by the graduates were faculty, research work for students, teaching resources and courses available. 4. The greatest weakness of the master's degree program in physical education at North Texas State University as indicated by the graduates was availability of facilities. 5. The majority of the graduates suggested the following: candidates should be free to select a variety of courses, should have the opportunity to select a specialized track, candidates should be involved in the procedures for preparation of degree plan, should increase physical education facilities and equipment, and should supplement the library in the department in order to facilitate research of relevant periodicals and journals.

Quanto ao processo avaliativo da CAPES, analisam importante que se avalie a qualidade dos programas, porém, apontam sugestões e contribuições para seu aperfeiçoamento e melhoria, o que envolve o respeito às especifidades da área e dos programas de pós-graduação, particularmente, em educação / Resumo: WASSEM, J. Concern about the quality of these programs, their expansion and production has been emphasized in the academic community and the main reference in this regard is the evaluation undertaken by the Coordination of Improvement of Personnel in Higher Education (CAPES), which evaluates the programs classifying them in a scale ranging from 3 to 7. In this scale the grades 6 and 7 are exclusive to programs that offer excellence level doctoral programs. This research aims to study eight (8) Graduate Programs in Education (PPGE) whose grades were 6 and 7 in the 2007-2009 triennium. As a general objective it sought to meet the vision of the coordinators of these programs on the process developed to achieve the level of excellence, i.e., to reach grades 6 and 7. It sought to raise with the coordinators of the elements that contributed to building the excellence of their programs. The development of the research was done through interviews with coordinators of the surveyed programs and the analysis of evaluation sheets of each program provided by CAPES. The results revealed that each program has different characteristics and conditions of production, even though they are equally ranked. In this sense, not all coordinators say their programs (PPGE) have adequate conditions to perform academic activities (academic, structural and financial resources). Regarding the elements which contribute to the construction of excellence in their programs they highlight aspects such as: Quality patterns of their High Education Institution (IES); Research groups; Well defined research lines; Academic leadership in specialty areas; Program management; and student¿s engagement. As for the CAPES evaluation process, they consider it is important to evaluate the quality of the programs, however, they point out suggestions and contributions to its improvement, which involve respect for the specificities of the area and graduate programs, particularly in education / Abstract: WASSEM, J. Selected Graduate Programs of Professional Education in the Spanish Southwest, with Curricular Emphases on Blacks, Indians, and Spanish Americans

Ray, Ruth Dunn 05 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to describe graduate courses and programs of professional education at selected institutions which emphasized the preparation of educators to work with Blacks, Indians, and Spanish American (EISA). Information from a survey of college and university graduate catalogs and the review of literature was used to select three institutions for an in-depth study. The institutions selected for study were East Texas State University (ETSU) at Commerce, the University of Texas at Austin (UT/Austin), and the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). Although only three institutions were selected for in-depth study, there seems to be evidence to support the following conclusions: (1) there seem to be more courses and programs with emphases on preparing educators to work with BISAs when outside funding is available, (2) continuation of courses and programs to prepare educators to work with BISAs seems to be directly influenced by the interest and involvement of individual instructors, (3) the instructors who were the most interested in preparing educators to work with multicultural groups seem to have larger classes, (4) the ethnic background of the instructor also seems to influence the effectiveness of a course, (5) a nonthreatening learning atmosphere seems to influence open discussions of serious cultural issues, and (6) informal interaction of Anglo, Black, and Mexican American educators seems to be an effective and satisfying type of cultural exchange and develooment of a cultural awareness.
