Design–theoretical and empirical, A research project inn design theory including the devolpment of a prototype for a symbol system that represents tastes of wine

Nordegren, Annica January 2004 (has links)
The thesis presents a research project in graphic design including the development of a symbol system that represents tastes of wine as consumer information. The thesis has three main chapters; design, theory and empirical foundation. The design chapter clarifies the design concept and its evolution from a traditional standpoint to its present state in the international area of design research as design theory. The theoretical chapter presents a map of concepts in order to explain problems and practical solutions in the design process. The concepts are based on the philosophical ideas of Ernst Cassirer and Ludwig Wittgenstein, and concern interpretation of sense information, symbols and signs, picture and image. The design of the symbol system concerns the experience of taste, as a translation from words to pictures. The empirical chapter comprehends both a description of the design process and of the empirical research. The method used is prototyping with a reference group of branch experts. The empirical research has evaluated the possibility to interpret, learn, use and understand the symbol system. The method used is a survey with questionnaires to a group of wine consumers

Tillit och trovärdighet inom webbdesign : En stegvis modell för utvärdering av trovärdighet med utgångspunkt från ett kommunikativt perspektiv / Trust and credibility in web design : A progressive model for the evaluation of credibility based on a communicative perspective

Löfstedt, Joachim January 2010 (has links)
This study examines how a private healthcare company's website should be designed to convey a high level of credibility to users and potential customers. The number of private healthcare companies is increasing and it is important to be visible and above all to be seen properly. Many private healthcare companies promote themselves through a company website to highlight themselves and their products and services. Based on a progressive model to evaluate the credibility have a number of factors been identified as the basis for how users perceive trust in the context. By studying how people from the target audience perceive credibility on selected sites, have a deeper understanding of the present upon the results emerged. The results show that there should be emphasis on the focus of the audience, images and imagery, graphic design and information architecture for the development of websites for private healthcare companies. By applying the factors identified in this study to the website of a private healthcare company, there is a greater chance that users from the target group will experience a high level of credibility in the context of interaction.

Innovative Design of Eight-Speed Parallel-Connected Automatic Transmissions for Automobiles

Kuo, Cheng-Sheng 10 September 2012 (has links)
An epicyclic-type automatic transmission is a device that is connected to the back of an engine and sends the power from the engine to the drive wheels. Its job is to keep the engine within a certain angular velocity. For the development of multi-speed parallel-connected automatic transmission for automobiles, the related configuration design methods are still tedious and prone to human error. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to present an efficient methodology for the systematic design of the parallel-connected automatic transmission for automobiles. First, fundamentals and gear-shifting operations of the parallel-connected automatic transmission are illustrated to establish the design requirements, and the theory of the analysis of speed ratios for epicyclic-type automatic transmission is derived based on the concept of lever analogy. Next, one simple clutching-sequence synthesis methods are proposed and illustrated, based on the lever analogy, and the design theory and the procedure of clutch configuration of epicyclic-type automatic transmission are developed. With the above methods, designs of six-speed and eight-speed parallel-connected automatic transmission. Finally, the complete atlas of six-speed and eight-speed parallel-connected automatic transmission can be systematically synthesized from the data of given speed ratios. This proposed design method can also be applied to the development and design of multi-speed parallel-connected automatic transmissions.

Innovative Design Methodology of Automatic Transmissions with Embedded Clutches for Automobiles

Lin, Chih-Yang 10 September 2012 (has links)
Hyundai, Toyota and GM automobile factory were committed to provide more speed planetary gear automatic transmission research and development in order to improve the transmission performance and fuel efficiency. To set embedded clutch into planetary gear mechanism is an effective way to get more speed ratio, its call an epicyclic-type automatic transmission with embedded clutches, referred to the embedded-type automatic transmission. For the development of automatic transmission with eight or more speed ratios, an efficient design methodology is urgently needed and still not available. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to develop a systematic method for the design of automatic transmission with embedded clutches. First, the features and requirements of the automatic transmissions with embedded clutches are investigated and the corresponding design requirements are induced. Next, the theory of the analysis of kinematic for automatic transmissions with embedded clutches is derived based on the concept of lever analogy. Then, the design theory of automatic transmissions with embedded clutches is developed based on the analysis theory. Finally, the complete atlas of automatic transmissions with embedded clutches can be systematically synthesized from the data of given speed ratios. In this article, the innovative and patentable seven-speed and eight-speed automatic transmissions with embedded clutches have been done. This proposed design method can also be applied to the development and design of ten-speed automatic transmissions with embedded clutches.

Reading the city : East Austin

Ogden, Rowan Matthew 08 August 2012 (has links)
My research trajectory focuses on creating graphic interpretations of the relationship between the urban landscape and the populations that reside within it. I use the term reading the city to indicate the process of selecting a focal point and connecting relevant information to it. By creating experimental mappings that connect the physical experience of the East Austin to relevant information contexts I seek to develop a series of design strategies that are appropriate for fostering a heightened awareness of the dynamics that shape the urban environment. In this context, graphic design functions as the primary tool for expressing these connections. This report explores the development of the reading process by summarizing conceptual precedents and eleven personal works, which were undertaken to explore the viability of the approach. / text

A generative methodology for reframing visual culture

Willett, Alice A 27 November 2013 (has links)
The purpose of my experimental research in the MFA Design Program has been to develop a working methodology to transfer into a professional graphic design practice upon completion of the program. In my time here, I have built a body of work that clearly expresses my intention, and developed a solid comprehension of the field of design, its discourse, and where my work is situated within it. The intended audience for my work, which tends to fall in the blurred space between design and art, are consumers of image and pop culture in the field, gallery, and public sphere. The projects I’ll present in this report will provide a context for the process by which I arrived at a personal methodology and a narrative for how I came to think about my work up to this point. / text

Visual rhetoric : a critical practice in image communication

Barela, James John 27 November 2013 (has links)
This report provides an understanding of the complexities involved in communicating through imagery. I've asserted in my research that the dissemination of images has changed significantly because of recent digital technologies. Social networking, in particular, has allowed for an intertextual web of communication to be created by exponentially increasing the visibility of images. By bringing these recent developments into my work, my design practice has focused on advancing social and political equality by exploiting digital reproduction. As part of my toolbox in image communication, the report focuses intently on two general methods of production: image-text relationships and visual tropes. By using these methods, I have been able to establish a critical practice that highlights the most recent possibilities in advancing social and political equality in the age of digital reproduction. / text

Guidelines for conceptual design to assist diagram creators in information design practice

Pontis, Sheila Victoria January 2012 (has links)
Today’s society is characterised by the production of massive amounts of information— freely transferred—and instant access to knowledge. This current overproduction of data is translated into complex diagrams to enhance the clarity. Nevertheless, it is commonplace in information design practice to find diagrams that are not communicating the intended messages. The act of conceiving the diagram takes place during conceptual design. This can be where misleading analysis and superfluous information organisation actions may lead to ill-conceived conceptual design, and therefore to ill-conceived diagrams, i.e. overloaded, unintelligible and disorganised. Existing tools for conceptual design of diagram creation do not properly meet design practitioners’ needs in that they tend to be excessively time-consuming to implement. This indicates a need for the exploration of new design methods focused specifically on the conceptual design stage of the process of designing diagrams. This practice-led thesis presents one such possible design method, i.e. MapCI Cards, aimed at guiding experienced graphic and information design practitioners in the preparation of complex diagrams. MapCI Cards presents a collection of guidelines that make use of prompts and questions, in order to assist the conceptual design stage of diagram creation. The use of the proposed design method does not guarantee the production of outstanding outputs. The purpose of MapCI Cards is not to create aesthetic design; rather, it is to increase an understanding through guided content analysis and organisation of the information to be conveyed. Lists, draft diagrams, mind-maps and sketches are some of the possible resulting outputs of using the MapCI Cards. In short, the cards assist the development of the conceptual idea of the potential final diagram that will be developed in the prototype design stage. The first stage of this research investigates how complex diagrams organise information, using the London Underground diagram as a case study. Analytical relational surveys are used to explore diagram creators’ decision-making processes. Sets of studies of diagram structures (Walker, 1979a; Tufte, 1983), design processes (Wurman, 1989; Jones, 1992) and information organisation (Wurman, 2001; Shedroff, 2003; Roam, 2008) are examined and combined. After this, the data collected are analysed using qualitative visual methods, and rearranged to develop the content in MapCI Cards. Two pilot workshops are designed as the revising and optimising methods. Then, five self-documentation cases drawn from practising information designers in the UK are conducted to test MapCI Cards within professional practice. The performance of the proposed guided approach to conceptual design is measured through an interpretation model, and key informants’ insights are used to delimit its conditions and limitations.
