Using Historical Bindings in Producing Contemporary Artists' Books

Aly, Islam Mahmoud Mohamed 01 July 2013 (has links)
I regard the culturally rich bookbinding as formats that hold great meaning; I made models of books that existed in different cultures through the history of the book. I became interested in how each structure had unique features and how the books themselves transmitted knowledge about their form. This interest in bookbinding formats led me to explore ways to add content to The binding plays a powerful role in producing my artist's books, the look and presence of these bindings is an integral part of my work and they are linked to the content and aesthetics. The final pieces encourage the viewer to interact with the work.

Drawing from the Book of Nature

Richard, Amy 01 May 2016 (has links)
My work is a response to the miraculous energy exhibited in nature, an invisible power that creates exquisite structures and designs in every living thing around us only to destroy them and begin again. Specifically, it is inspired by a lifelong fascination with the detritus left behind. Shimmering maple tree seeds, decaying oak leaves, or delicate marine relics awash on the beach are tangible (and daily) reminders that life is precious and fleeting, but also hopeful as that energy is always transformed into something new. The drawings, pulp prints and sculptures produced for my thesis are futher animated by the belief that nature is telling us something with its expressive vocabulary of lines, shapes, textures and colors. In every weather-worn remnant, there is a narrative—a life history and lessons to be learned. Captivated by the recurring forms and patterns found on land and in the sea, I find myself trying to decipher this language through close observation and interaction with the objects I collect, study and draw from, as well as the natural materials used to produce the work. Through the rituals of drawing and erasing, steaming, cooking and preparing fiber, concealing and revealing imagery, form and text, I find myself connecting with these narratives and participating in an age-old dialogue with nature.

The Venus series

Beal, Lindsey Alissa 01 May 2011 (has links)
The Venus Series is an attempt to recreate the power, mystery and primal beauty of the pre-historic Venus Figurines. I created my own Venus Figurines out of handmade paper incorporating history, contemporary culture and autobiography. I then photographed these sculptures with the wet-plate collodion process in order to re-create the beauty and drama of the original Venus Figurines.

Lost & Found

Speight, Diane 10 May 2014 (has links)
Digital technology has expanded the designer’s creative reach, but cannot duplicate the complexity of the imperfect and unexpected results of handmade processes. By executing a series of hand-built collage and assemblage pieces, I hope to not only rediscover the pleasure of working with my hands but also to develop creative methods to incorporate into future design projects. In this body of work, I have manually executed tasks that designers perform with software — cutting, pasting, layering, aligning, and creating transparency and drop shadows. The pieces are built from new and found materials, using text and images from old family letters and photos — physical evidence of relationships from my childhood and those of my parents and grandparents. These pieces express fragments of memories and family history.

Studies about knowledge of the local people about nature and how natural resources are exploited are so important for the enhancement of ethnobiological knowledge the same and the management of natural resources appropriately. Aiming to analyze the ethnobiological knowledge the fishers of estuary mangrove Vaza-Barris, Sergipe have about the swimming crabs and descrive the activity of catching this feature, there were 20 semi-structured and structured interviews, participant observations and informal conversations with experts fishers in the São Cristóvão city. The specific folk were identified by: "siri-de-mangue" (Callinectes exasperatus), "siri-de-ponta", "siria-de-cumidia" and "siria-nica" (Callinectes danae), "siri-pimenta" and "siri-cachorro" (Callinectes larvatus), "siri-cagão" (Callinectes bocourti), "siri-patola" (Calappa sulcata" and "siri-de-viveiro" (Callinectes sapidus and Callinectes bocourti). Morphological, ecological and behavioral criteria were used in the identification, naming and classification of specific folk. Fishers associate the happening, spatial and temporal distribution and reproductive aspectes of crabs to tidal movemente, lunar cycle and the seasons. The trophic ecology of crabs is known by fishers, featuring many correspondences with scientific information and the process of molting crabs is know in detail. Knowledge of this feature were acquired through cultural transmission (vertically and horizontally), beyond individual leraning afforded by practical experience (fishing). The techniques used to catch the crabs are the traps, line, gaff, knife, torch and fishnet. The fishery regime and the choice of the techinque vary in relation to the target species, the movement of the tide, the lunar cycle and the seasonal period and, consequently, in relation to the distribution patterns of the species of crabs. Women use the line in catching the crabs, which is known as "woman's fishery". The "siri-de-mangue" is sold alive and "siri-de-ponta" undergo a processing, which are cooked and broken retained for the flesh. The monthly income just by selling crabs varies from R$150 to R$ 1000 depending on the species of crab which is marketed, of the seasonal period and the presence of the illegal seller in the marketing process. It is necessary to researches, starting from the information of the fishers, to test hypotheses, and enrich the scientific knowledge about species of crabs, particularly on C. exasperatus, which is the most important cultural and economic species.

Scarton, Luciana Maria January 2011 (has links)
Coming from the sugar cane, exotic plant introduced in Brazil around 1504, the cachaça become a typical product and its history has developed along with the country. Nowadays, this drink is produced in large scale and some States producers are known for its high quality, Rio Grande do Sul is an example of that. This State is the fourth regarding the production of handmade cachaça, mainly because its initiatives of improvement and presentation of products. The most remarkable initiative was the creation, in 2005, of the group called Alambiques Gaúchos, that is the object of study on this paper. The sector of cachaça is influenced by several factors, such as informality, cultural issues, internal conflicts, taxes, competition, and it reflects on the way an organization governs itself. The theory in this study is the New Institutional Economics (NIE), mainly in the micro analytical method called Transaction Cost Economics (TCE), covered by the work of Williamson. Through a case study based on the Induction Scheme of the Forms of Governance, proposed by Zylbersztajn, the aim is to understand the factors that influence the transactions of the group Alambiques Gaúchos, identifying the governance structure and its mechanisms of coordination. A quantitative and qualitative research was done and descriptive statistics and Comparative Structural Analysis Discrete to the analysis and interpretation data. It was concluded that the governance structure concluded that the governance structure that could be adopted by the group, would be hybrid, however, there is no coordination. It makes not possible a larger organization of members, prejudicing the inclusion of the handmade cachaça both in national or international markets.

Gamalho, Nola Patrícia January 2009 (has links)
This research aims to understand the production of space and its representations at Restinga neighborhood, in Porto Alegre, RS. They are constructions built by materialities, ideas, intentions and lives, which form, in a contradictory, complex and singular way, this neighborhood. Its material production is not separable from its imaginary and, although the space is abstraction, it is also materiality in people's lives, evolving from the distant order - State and institutions - to the nearer order, given by the relationships of neighborhood or in nets. Thus, the production of space is kept up with distinct (and contradictory) representations, formed inside and outside Restinga. These imaginaries were created with the production of the neighborhood and the removing of the poorest handmade houses, which reproduces, in another way, the social distances. However, the person who finds in the neighborhood a shelter inside an unequal society has positive values, undoing it from the imaginaries that stigmatize it. Facts and ideas compound the people from outskirts' lives, which build the links between individual and neighborhood, in constant elaborations of space of representation.
