The ENCOURAGEing workplaces project: the addition of a fitness based health risk assessment to a physical activity counseling intervention

Hamm, Naomi 13 September 2016 (has links)
There has been a large growth in workplace wellness initiatives; however, use of fitness based health risk assessments (fHRAs) remains largely unexplored. I hypothesized that adding an fHRA to a physical activity counseling intervention (PAC+HRA) would greater increase physical activity levels compared to physical activity counseling alone (PAC). A 4 month, two- group quasi-experimental design was used to test this hypothesis. Over time, there was an increase in total, moderate to vigorous, and moderate physical activity ≥10-minute bouts. Self-Efficacy for Exercise increased and symptoms of depression decreased. Subgroup analysis of the PAC+HRA group found a significant improvement in overall fitness levels. Participants progressed to more advanced stages of change. In conclusion, PAC+HRA did not increase physical activity levels more than PAC. This is likely due to the characteristics of the counseling, fHRA, and outcome measurements. / October 2016

The paper studied the health and the working environment. Initially, it emphasizes its links with subordinate work - elevated, by classical juridical-labour theory, to the category of its central object. It aims to demonstrate that the illness exists and is transformed as a result of the subordination of labour to capital strength, bringing negative impacts on individual relationships, trade unions and international labor. It says that various forms of work, when executed, also affect the health and life of mankind, animals, biodiversity, the environment and nature as a whole, inside and outside the workplace. Unlike the paths followed by the traditional doctrine, it opposes the fundamentals of classical legal-labour theory to the foundations of critical labour theory; It sets up a confrontation between the conservative organizational theories and critical organizational theories. Instead of following the theoretical common sense, it advocates, through a multidisciplinary approach, focused on critical social theory in general, and in the theories of social movements, in particular, that the forms of management and administration- from Fordism/ Taylorism to the most sophisticated managerial versions, that capture the subjectivity- are responsible for the dualisation of wage, the clandestinization at work, the illness, the weakening of trade union struggles. This analytical design features a proposition aimed to overcome the common view and the authority of the old doctrine in two ways: through the theories of social movements, favoring the resumption of trade union struggles in their dual perspective- reformist revolutionary- and that, coupled with the new social movements will be able to expand its agendas and face the model of flexible- accumulation; also discusses a distinct mode of access to justice that can interdict the actions of local productive sectors, regional and transnational, causing various forms of disease, and, at the same time, undermine and cause damage to the environment and nature. It moves away from the illusory versions of all idealism, to face the law as it is and not as it should be. The concrete floor of social relations proposes a hermeneutic approaching the principles of labour law to the principles of Procedural Law Labor, so that their union can be able to interdict the overwhelming way of illness, the slow death at work, the destruction of the environment and nature.

Ledin, Monica January 2016 (has links)

Mental Illness in the Workplace: Understanding How Managers Respond to their Employees Living with a Mental Illness

Khokha, Ridhi 26 March 2021 (has links)
This present research explores the following research question: How do managers respond to employees who are living with a mental illness? In answering this research question, I explore the challenges mental illnesses pose to managers, how managers successfully and unsuccessfully respond to those challenges, and the potential positive outcomes associated with encountering an employee who is living with a mental health condition. I answer my guiding research question through five in-depth semi-structured interviews and by relying on six structured and targeted narrative interviews that had been conducted for a previous research project. All interviews were conducted with managers across a variety of industries who have experience working with at least one employee who has lived with a mental health condition. Based on the themes that emerge in these interviews, I document the challenges managers face. I also identify several ‘facilitators of success’, defined as behaviours or actions that managers believed had some degree of positive impact on helping an employee living with a mental illness. The insights developed through this research will better inform the research community regarding managers’ experiences working with employees with a mental illness, as well help inform organizations regarding how they can better equip their managers in dealing with employee mental illness.

Nilsson, Kristin Unknown Date (has links)
The aim of this qualitative study was to give an deeper understanding of how employees in the engineering industry experienced health education and how they understood and gave meaning to the terms health and health education. The study was based on interviews with eight men and women who participated in a health education project which had been held on their workplace. When the study took place the interviewees were in the age between 28 and 58 years. The results indicate that the employees understood health as a combination of both physical and psychological factors. The positive aspects described by the interviewees based on their experiences from the project were increase physical activities and that the project had helped them to get a better diet. In some cases the interviews had divided experiences about different parts of the project, but overall the result show that the interviewees were convinced that the project had helped them to improve their health and that the company was likely to benefit from the employees' improved health through reduced absenteeism and higher production.

Health promotion at the workplace : Promoting health by embracing the concept of corporate social responsibility

Yarashuk, Elvira January 2013 (has links)
The main issues, which arise in that research project, are connected with health dimensions. There are emphasised points, which contribute to the employees’ health and well-being, solutions, which organisations implement to prevent workers from diseases and illnesses, to track their current condition of body and mind and generally to improve their overall health situation. From the very beginning the main stress was supposed to lie on physical activity promotion being an integral part of health promotion at the workplace but the obtained information from the conducted interviews verified that idea. The research also touches other variables contributing to the employees’ health and cons tituting the idea of health promotion at the workplace, namely health profiles and Corporate Social Responsibility. It is argued who may benefit from workplace physical activities and to which extent such programs may succeed. Interviews showed double points of views according to the necessity to encourage employees to train within the organization. Basis for the discussion of the topic were interviews gained from the interaction with the staff of the organization Xylem located in Sweden in Emmaboda, a world leader in water solutions. The chosen methodology based on the case study appeared to be the most relevant to explore health issues thanks to the clear empirical example. The company was distinguished because of the sport and rehabilitation centre, which it had in its possession and which seemed to make Xylem be different from the competitors and gave advantages for the employees in the form of additional benefits causing going in for sport at the company’s expense. The results of the research indicate that health promotion at the workplace may be viewed as a part of Corporate Social Responsibility. The evidences for IV that perspective are presented with a proper motivation mostly in the conclusion part. The research intended to show to the readers to what extent health promotion at the workplace incorporating physical activities, health profiles and CSR is important, how it is regarded and how much attention, time and efforts is and should be devoted to deal with that dimension in a proper way.

Hälsoinspiratören - en del av en hälsofrämjande arbetsplats

Larsson, Malin, Ålander, Elin Unknown Date (has links)
An individual´s health is an important quality and asset to the individual, as well as to organizations and communities. The health of a human being is affected by the whole life situation, where the work place forms a significant part. The work place is an arena that can contribute to creating ill-health. In the light of increasing work- related ill-health in our society, it is important today to work with health-promoting initiatives in order to improve the well-being of people. It is advisable that an appointed key person at the work place works with health-promoting efforts. This person could very well be a health inspirer. The aim of this study was to make a closer examination and analysis of how health inspirers within the Social Services in Umeå identify themselves with their assignment . Ten health inspirers took part in a qualitative interview study. The result showed that the assignment of the health inspires was to work with conveying knowledge and motivating their co-workers to a healthy behavior which in turn would lead to well-being and good health. The support and feedback by the manager and co-workers were important factors in motivating the health inspirers for the assignment. More distinct frameworks and guidelines proved to be factors that very well could have facilitated the work of the health inspirers.
