La représentation de la ville industrielle dans le roman du XIXème siècle. / The representation of the industrial city in the nineteenth century's novel.

Avec l'émergence de la révolution industrielle, les populations rurales se dirigèrent vers les centres industriels nouveaux. S'y constitua un nouveau peuple, le peuple ouvrier, s’entassant dans les villes et dans les banlieues autour des usines. Surgirent de terre autour des manufactures industrielles des habitations destinées à minimiser la distance entre les logements et les lieux de travail. S'y Avec l'émergence de la révolution industrielle, les populations rurales se dirigèrent vers les centres industriels tissèrent des structures sociales simples, aboutissant à une nouvelle forme de ville : la ville industrielle, dont la caractéristique la plus importante, avant la présence du milieu ouvrier, réside dans celle d’une usine ou d’une mine, pleine d'objets et d'inventions mécaniques et techniques. La présente recherche se propose pour but de présenter cette ville industrielle en tant que produit le plus typique du XIXe siècle, avec ses composants techniques et ses habitants ouvriers. La ville s'y envisage comme l'un des berceaux les plus importants des romans, ceux-ci allant jusqu'à la prendre comme support de leur intrigue. Sans négliger l’importance considérable de la machine dans le bouleversement de la vie quotidienne ni oublier que la révolution technique est portée et manifestée par elle, la thèse analyse à travers ces romans le rôle de ces objets bruyants et imposants, ses machines, dans la formation de la ville industrielle, aussi bien que dans la vie de ses habitants. L'étude se complète par un portrait des ouvriers, ces utilisateurs des machines et ces incarnations de la technique et de l’industrie, dans leur vie, leur travail et leurs habitudes. Avec la littérature du XIXe siècle et surtout le mouvement naturaliste, ce peuple se trouve pour la première fois considéré dans la monotonie quotidienne de son existence, dans ses petits drames, ses mœurs, sa mentalité. Apparaissent de la sorte les effets néfastes de l’industrialisation et du machinisme sur la vie de ces personnes, auxquels certains auteurs remédient par la création d'utopies. / With the emergence of the industrial revolution, country people moved to the new industrial centers. Through this movement appeared a new social class, the working class, crowding in the cities and also in the suburbs around the factories. To minimize the distance between the places of work and the residences, a lot habitations appear suddenly out of earth around industrial factories. In those areas, simple social structures were created leading to a new city shape: the industrial city whose main characteristic, before the setting of the working class, is the factory or the mine, places full of industrial items, mechanical inventions and techniques. The present research aims at introducing this industrial city as the most typical product of the nineteenth century through its technical components and its working class. The city is considered as one of the main element in the novel as far as becoming the basic and strong support of their intrigue. Without neglecting the substancial and amazing effect and the consequences of the machine in the daily life and without forgetting that the technical revolution is supported and materialized by the machine itself, the thesis analyses, through the studied novels, the role of those machines in the emergence of the industrial city as well as its effects in the daily life of the working class. The study is developed by a portrait of the working class, main users of the machines and a description of the technical and industrial incarnations in their lifes, their work and their habits. With the nineteenth century's literature and especially through the naturalist movement, this social class is for the first time analysed by considering its monotonous daily life, its little dramas, its manners and its mentality. Therefore the negative effects of the industrialization and of the mechanization on the working class appear in the literature, and some writers try to solve the problem by creating utopia.

Este trabalho visa estudar a representação da infância e da criança em romances europeus escritos entre 1850 e a primeira década do século XX. O corpus analisado compõe-se de três obras que se inserem na chamada literatura infantojuvenil. A primeira intitula-se Sans famille, escrita pelo francês Hector Malot e publicada em 1878. A segunda, de autoria do italiano Carlo Collodi, é o clássico As aventuras de Pinóquio, publicado entre 1881 e 1883. E, finalmente, a terceira obra, Peter e Wendy, foi escrita por J. M. Barrie e publicada em 1911. A pesquisa leva em conta alguns fatores decisivos para o desenvolvimento da literatura infantojuvenil europeia. Um deles é a percepção de que a infância constitui, de fato, uma fase de desenvolvimento marcadamente distinta da adulta. O mercado editorial, atento às percepções de sua época, passa a produzir uma quantidade de obras destinadas ao público jovem, algo até então sem precedente. Tais obras se diferenciam das antecessoras em especial pela linguagem e pelos temas de interesse específico deste público. Além disso, a própria literatura irá incorporar em sua narrativa a criança e o jovem como protagonistas, reforçando ainda mais o contato com esse novo público leitor. Sob a inspiração dos ensaios de Erich Auerbach em sua obra Mimesis, também neste trabalho foram selecionadas três obras de culturas diferentes e que pudessem trazer informações sobre a representação ficcional da infância. A narrativa francesa Sans famille, imbuída dos movimentos sociais do século XIX, traça um retrato da criança abandonada (enfant trouvé), estigmatizada desde seu nascimento, um fenômeno presente em toda a Europa. Em As aventuras de Pinóquio, o tema é outro: em uma Itália recém-unificada pela força, o romance de Pinóquio problematiza a questão educacional, que será a bandeira do novo governo. Por fim, Peter e Wendy representa crianças autônomas representando a crise de valores entre as expectativas dos adultos e os desejos das crianças e, assim, acena para a moderna literatura do século XX. Esta tese defende que tais obras são capitais para o surgimento de uma nova narrativa destinada ao público infantojuvenil e que seus protagonistas iniciaram uma nova representação de personagem criança na literatura, especialmente Pinóquio e Peter Pan. Ao final, o leitor encontra uma entrevista com o pesquisador inglês Peter Hunt, realizada exclusivamente para este trabalho. / This work aims to study the representation of childhood and child in European novels written between 1850 and the first decade of the twentieth century. The corpus analyzed is composed of three works that belong to the so-called children\'s literature. The first is entitled Sans famille, written by the Frenchman Hector Malot and published in 1878. The second, by the Italian Carlo Collodi, is the classic The Adventures of Pinocchio, published between 1881 and 1883. And finally, the third work, Peter and Wendy, was written by J.M. Barrie and published in 1911. The research takes into account some decisive factors for the development of European children\'s literature. One is the perception that childhood is, in fact, a phase of development markedly different from that of adulthood. The publishing market, attentive to the perceptions of its time, begins to produce a quantity of works destined to the young public, something hitherto unprecedented. Such works differ from the predecessors, especially in the language and themes of specific interest of this public. In addition, the literature itself will incorporate the child and the young person as protagonists in their narrative, reinforcing even more the contact with this new readership. Under the inspiration of Erich Auerbach\'s essays in his work Mimesis, in this work three books of different cultures were also selected bringing information about the fictional representation of childhood. The French narrative Sans famille, imbued with the social movements of the nineteenth century, traces a portrait of the abandoned child (\"enfant trouvé\"), stigmatized since its birth, a phenomenon present throughout Europe. In The Adventures of Pinocchio, the theme is different: in a newly unified Italy by force, the novel problematizes the educational system, which will be the banner of the new government. Finally, Peter and Wendy depicting autonomous children representing the crisis of values between the expectations of the adults and the desires of the children and, thus, nods to the modern literature of the twentieth century. This thesis argues that such works are important for the emergence of a new narrative aimed at children and young people and that their protagonists started a new representation of child character in literature, especially Pinocchio and Peter Pan. At the end, the reader finds an interview with the English researcher Peter Hunt, made exclusively for this work.

La néolithisation dans la région de Montréal depuis le Sylvicole moyen tardif : apport archéopalynologique

Des preuves archéopalynologiques directes appuient maintenant l’hypothèse d’une lente adaptation horticole durant la néolithisation amérindienne de la région de Montréal. Les sites archéologiques Hector-Trudel (BhFl-1a) de Pointe-du-Buisson et Séminaire de Saint-Sulpice (BjFj-18) dans le Vieux-Montréal ont été retenus pour élaborer une méthodologie archéopalynologique d’étude des sols archéologiques. Cela a permis de caractériser l’impact de la présence humaine sur l'environnement végétal des sites et d’identifier des indices de culture et de gestion de plantes allogènes et indigènes. Un complexe horticole de production à petite échelle de maïs (Zea mays), de tournesol (Helianthus annuus) et de petit tabac (Nicotiana rustica) et une forme de gestion des arbustes à petits fruits sont identifiés au site Hector-Trudel durant le Sylvicole moyen tardif (500 à 1000 A.D.). Ces cultigènes sont aussi identifiés au site du Séminaire pour la fin du Sylvicole supérieur ancien (1200 à 1300 A.D.), dans des proportions toutefois plus importantes, et une activité de gestion forestière au profit des arbres à noix et du tilleul d’Amérique (Tilia americana), reflet des pratiques d’entretien des champs cultivés, témoignent d’une évolution dans les comportements / Direct archaeopalynological proof now supports the hypothesis of a slow horticultural adaptation during the Native American neolithisation of the Montreal area. Archaeological sites Hector-Trudel (BhF1-la) of Pointe-du-Buisson and Séminaire de Saint-Sulpice (BjFj-18) in Old Montreal were retained to elaborate an archaeopalynological methodology of archaeological soil study. This has allowed to characterize the impact of human presence of a vegetal environment on the sites and to identify signs of cultivation and management of alien and indigenous plants. A horticultural complex producing corn (Zea mays), sunflower (Helianthus annuus) and native tobacco (Nicotina rustica) on a small scale and a form of fruit-bearing shrubs management are identified at the Hector-Trudel site during the Late Middle Woodland (A.D. 500 to 1000). These cultigens are also identified at the Séminaire site for the end of the Early Late Woodland (A.D. 1200 to 1300), though in bigger proportions, and a woodland management activity benefiting nut trees and the American basswood (Tilia americana), reflecting cultivated field maintenance practices, are evidence of an evolution in behaviors.

This war will never be forgotten : A study of intertextual relations between Homer's <em>Iliad</em> and Wolfgang Petersen's <em>Troy</em>

<p>In 2004 <em>Troy</em> was released in movie theatres worldwide and almost immediately sparked up discussions on film’s relation to the ancient epic of Homer.</p><p> The main purpose of this paper is to see the connection between <em>Troy</em> and Homer’s <em>The Iliad</em> – motion pictures’ only officially credited source of inspiration. By using comparative method and intertextual approach I try to see how a literary piece, for centuries recited and cherished by the highest academic circles is remodelled to fit the taste of a mass public. How <em>The Iliad</em> mutates to be a marketable product.</p><p>   I discuss the changes of the plot that were introduced in <em>Troy</em> and try to see those changes as an outcome of mutation process. Apart from the plot, the notion of a hero is also discussed: how the definition of hero changed through time? To illustrate the changes, two main heroes – Achilles and Hector are discussed, yet again using the comparative method.</p><p>   By approaching <em>Troy</em> and <em>The Iliad</em> as two separate cultural products (I did not view <em>Troy</em><em> </em>as a documentary on <em>The Iliad</em>) I was able to connect them. I could see that the essence of the literary work and the film appears to be the same. It shows that the ancient Greek values, especially those, related to warfare and heroism, have definitely survived long enough to penetrate the modern thought.</p>

The Serpent and Ophicleide as Instruments of Romantic Color in Selected Works by Mendelssohn, Berlioz and Wagner

Traditional scholarship has stated that the serpent and ophicleide (as well as their successor, the tuba) were developed and added to the standard orchestra to add a bass voice to the brass, allowing a tonal compass to match a similar downward expansion in the strings and woodwinds. A closer reading of the earliest scores calling for these instruments reveals a more coloristic purpose, related to timbre as much as to compass. Indeed, the fact that composers rarely wrote for serpent and ophicleide makes two points: it proves them to be inadequate choices as a brass bass, and when they were called for, they had an expressive, often descriptive purpose. Despite his conservative musical education supervised by Carl Friedrich Zelter, the seventeen-year-old Mendelssohn, under the influence of A. B. Marx, used the Corno inglese di basso, an upright version of the serpent, in his Overture to A Midsummer Night's Dream to give a more rustic flavor to Bottom's ass-braying. Even when the English bass horn functioned as a bass voice, it was playing in contexts that were descriptive, where it often demonstrated its musical inadequacy. Berlioz's descriptive writing for the serpent and ophicleide are well known. A remarkable feature which Symphonie fantastique shares with works by the other composers is the confidence Berlioz showed in the ophicleide's functional independence by occasionally giving it an arpeggiated figure while the rest of the orchestra sustains the chord. Wagner's writing for the serpent and ophicleide in Rienzi follows the less imaginative conventions of French grand opera. In Der fliegende Holländer the ophicleide, while not used as descriptively as Mendelssohn and Berlioz, nevertheless contributes significantly to Wagner's emerging focus on the inner lives of his characters and expressive commentary on the stage action. Tubists should consider the expressive implications and the unique timbre of these instruments when performing works originally written for the forerunners of the tuba.

Swarms: Epistemological Encounters in the Early American Environment

Writers of early American texts frequently express astonishment at the abundance of swarming things found in nature, from rustling clouds of insects to ponds teeming with fish to forests of countless trees. They report feeling overwhelmed, fascinated, and threatened by the dynamic, formless grouping of the swarm, in which the distinction between part and whole is lost in a blur of motion. In this dissertation, I trace these experiences of swarming across religious tracts, natural histories, philosophy texts, and historical fiction to argue that the swarm is crucial for understanding early American ways of relating to the environment. Scholars of the colonial period have long maintained that settlers viewed the American continent as a vast and empty land, available for settlement and resource extraction, and that the settler mind sought to manage the perceived chaos of their new surroundings through the application of European systems of thought and order. I argue, however, that the experience of the swarm indicates another kind of environmental relation, one in which the viewer and the natural world become ecologically entangled. In this entanglement, settlers found their preconceived ideas challenged, forcing them to revise or generate anew their theories of the world. While these ecological experiences of the natural world appear in texts by the settler writers Jonathan Edwards, Hector St. John Crèvecoeur, William Bartram, and James Fenimore Cooper, the ideas that develop through the swarm are influenced by or overlap with the epistemologies of the Native American peoples who inhabited the lands these settlers occupied. The project also addresses Indigenous modes of environmental relation and philosophies through Haudenosaunee cosmologies, Maskoke origins stories, and the work of the Tuscarora writer David Cusick. Overall, this dissertation offers an epistemological history of the colonial period that not only revises long- accepted characterizations of the settler mindset but that also takes seriously the histories of Indigenous philosophies as early American intellectual movements. In detailing experiences in which the mind and the natural world are not in fact separate entities, my work presents alternative modes of environmental relation and offers suggestions to today’s urgent need to rethink our orientation toward the natural world.

L’objectif principal de cette thèse a été d’expliquer les raisons du succès du poème en prose dans les revues littéraires belges du dernier quart du XIXe siècle ;en particulier, nous nous sommes penchés sur les périodiques les plus prestigieux de la période :La Jeune Belgique (1881-1897) et La Wallonie (1886-1892).La première partie du travail a été consacrée aux difficultés relatives à la délimitation du corpus en question. Sous ce nom, les auteurs de l’époque ont fait paraitre des œuvres très dissemblables et la critique académique qui s’est penchée sur la question n’est jamais parvenue à fournir une définition cohérente du genre. Nous avons mis en évidence surtout comment il n’existe aucune solution de continuité entre le poème en prose et ce que Bertrand Vibert a appelé dans ses études « le conte poétique » symboliste.La deuxième partie de la recherche s’est alors portée sur la délimitation du corpus et sur la description des formes, des thèmes et des motifs les plus récurrents. Les principaux auteurs dont nous nous sommes occupés sont Hector Chainaye (1865-1913), Charles Delchevalerie (1872-1950), O. G. Destrée (1867-1919), Jules Destrée (1863-1936), Maurice des Ombiaux (1868-1943), Arnold Goffin (1863-1934), Charles Van Lerberghe (1861-1907) et Émile Verhaeren (1855-1916). Dans la partie finale, nous avons vu pour quelles raisons ce genre a été aussi souvent pratiqué par des écrivains fraichement entrés en littérature ;accepté tant par les Parnassiens qui occupaient à l’époque le pôle dominant du champ littéraire, tant par l’avant-garde symboliste, le poème en prose apparaissait comme le choix stratégiquement le plus sûr pour parvenir à la consécration. Icons of war photography : how war photographs are reinforced in collective memory : a study of three historical reference images of war and conflict

Thesis (MPhil (Journalism))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009. / There are certain images of war that are horrific, frightening and at the same time, due to an outstanding compositional structure, they are fascinating and do not allow its observers to keep their distance. This thesis examines three images of war that have often been described as icons of war photography. The images “children fleeing a napalm strike” by Nick Ut, “the falling soldier” by Robert Capa and Sam Nzima’s photograph of Hector Pieterson are historical reference images that came to represent the wars and conflicts in which they were taken. It has been examined that a number of different factors have an impact on a war photograph’s awareness level and its potential to commit itself to what is referred to as collective consciousness. Such factors are the aesthetical composition and outstanding formal elements in connection with the exact moment the photograph was taken, ethical implications or the forcefulness of the event itself. As it has been examined in this thesis, the three photographs have achieved iconic status due to different circumstances and criteria and they can be described as historical reference images representing the specific wars or conflicts. In this thesis an empirical study was conducted, questioning 660 students from Spain, South Africa and Vietnam about their awareness level regarding the three selected photographs. While the awareness level of the Spanish and the South African image was rather high in the countries of origin, they did not achieve such a high international awareness level as the Vietnamese photograph by Nick Ut, which turned out to be exceptionally well-known by all students questioned. Overall, findings suggest that the three selected icons of war photography have been anchored in collective memory.
