The main axis in which the research is oriented is the reality not foreseen in the Projects that arise in the appropriations of collective spaces, where they show contradictions between the architecture project commissioned by the public power and the use by the residents. Throughout the research the land issue and the origin of the land appears as one of the indications of the revealed contradictions, as for example, the imprecision of land is reproduced in the uses and appropriations of the inhabitants. The work analyzes the collective spaces of each housing group chosen according to criteria for identifying characteristics that support the urban quality of the projects. The sets chosen are: Conjunto Habitacional Rincão 1989-1992, Rio das Pedras - Vila Mara 1989-1998 and Parque Novo Santo Amaro V 2009-2012. From this analysis divided into three moments the dissertation aims to address the problem of public space in housing of social interest, its relevance to the works of HIS in the construction of the city and the contradictions that exist in these spaces in the architecture project.

DESPERATE TIMES CALL is a collection of short stories and a novella about people whose lives intersect with violence. The young girl in Of Course She Would is forced to leave her home after finding her meth-addicted father dead of a heart attack. Tomas Mangual, the main character of She Said Two, sets off on a blind date to discover his counterpart has recently been the victim of a disturbing hate crime. The featured novella, Diablo Corrido, raises the question: How far would someone chase their ambition to see a life-long dream come true? Using the intimate perspectives of first-person and close third-person points of view, DESPERATE TIMES CALL offers glimpses of characters chasing dreams of success, romance, wealth, even normalcy, but coming up empty-handed.

Exploring the experiences of tourists at heritage sites: the case of Liliesleaf Farm Museum and the Hector Pieterson Memorial & Museum

Masilo, Hope January 2016 (has links)
A dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Science, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in fulfilment of requirements for the degree of Master of Science. Johannesburg, March 2016. / Heritage tourism has emerged as an important part of tourism growth in the new South Africa. It contributes significantly in demonstrating the diverse cultural offerings that the country has to offer. Struggle heritage is one of the elements that attract tourists to visit South African museums. Using a mixed methods approach of quantitative and qualitative data, this study explored the motivations, experiences and understanding of heritage of 100 local tourists at Liliesleaf Farm Museum (50 respondents) and the Hector Pieterson Memorial & Museum (50 respondents), both based in Johannesburg. This research adds to the debates on how people perceive heritage and how important it is to them. The findings suggest that South Africans desire to visit heritage sites but due to the unavailability of information and inadequate communication between museum marketers and the public, local tourists are less likely to visit. Overall, this study suggests that although creating memorable and unique visitor experiences is essential, being in regular contact with repeat and prospective visitors is paramount for the growth and sustainability of the museum and the continued dialogue of the struggle, as well as the development and advancement of Heritage Tourism in South Africa. / GR 2016

Towards a psychoanalytical music analysis of Hector Berlioz's song cycle Les nuits d'été

Botha, Henry Russell 01 1900 (has links)
This dissertation explores what it is that makes Les nuits d’été such an effective musical composition. This is done by analysing the song cycle according to Terry Eagleton’s four categories of psychoanalytical literary criticism. The death of Berlioz’s mother, with whom he had an unresolved conflict at the time of her death, is proposed as the emotional trigger that led to the composition of these songs. The content and form of the music to which he set them reveals a narrative that closely corresponds to Freud’s description of the Oedipal conflict and its successful resolution. Using the psychoanalytical theories of Lacan, Barthes, Kristeva and others, the subliminal catharsis of Berlioz’s song cycle, in the way that it is transposed to the listener through the mediation of the music, is proposed as the reason why Les nuits d’été is such an effective musical composition. / Art History, Visual Arts & Musicology / M.A. (Musicology)
