Vývoj identity v dílech Akata Witch and Akata Warrior od Nnedi Okorafor / Identity Development in Akata Witch and Akata Warrior by Nnedi Okorafor

Váňa, František January 2022 (has links)
This thesis explores the development of individuality in Nigerian books for young adults, Akata Witch and Akata Warrior by Nnedi Okorafor. For that, the literary concepts of young adult literature and the heroic journey (monomyth) is used. This thesis aims to prove that the heroic journey framework may be applied to young adult literature, primarily concerning the formation of identity resulting a certain correlation between the two types of narrative. Based on the description of concepts of literary theory, such as the Other, described by Robyn McCallum, and the individual constitutive elements of the heroic journey, in the theoretical part, the analysis from both vantage points and subsequent correlation between them is described in the practical part. The two books that are analysed are described from the point of three major concepts of young adult literature and all twenty six steps of the heroic journey, based on Campbell and other literary theorists. Based on this analysis, it is concluded that there is a certain correlation between the two narrative frameworks. It is especially similar concerning the growth of individuality of its protagonists. Despite there being a correlation among the two types of narrative, young adult literature and the heroic journey, certain elements do not have...

Orality, Literacy, and Heroism in Huckleberry Finn

Barrow, William David, 1955- 08 1900 (has links)
This work re-assesses the heroic character of Huckleberry Finn in light of the inherent problems of discourse. Walter Ong's insights into the differences between oral and literate consciousnesses, and Stanley Fish's concept of "interpretive communities" are applied to Huck's interactions with the other characters, revealing the underlying dynamic of his character, the need for a viable discourse community. Further established, by enlisting the ideas of Ernest Becker, is that this need for community finds its source in the most fundamental human problem, the consciousness of death. The study concludes that the problematic ending of Twain's novel is consistent with the theme of community and is neither the artistic failure, nor the cynical pronouncement on the human race that so many critics have seen it to be.

Lauzon, Nicolas 08 1900 (has links)
Between the second half of the10th century and the beginning of the 11th century, the Old English poem Judith was written in one of the great monastic centers of the Anglo-Saxon world. This poem, based on the biblical text of the Book of Judith, is the result of the meeting of traditional biblical material and the heroic Anglo-Saxon poetic tradition. From this encounter emerges a work celebrating biblical history and the moral teachings it carries, as well as the values of Anglo-Saxon aristocratic culture and heroism. The poem Judith is therefore a strong example of cultural adaptation of biblical material. This thesis is concerned with this question of cultural adaptation, but even more with that of the coexistence of different traditions and cultural references within the Old English poem Judith. Throughout this thesis, it will be a question of determining the nature of this coexistence, namely how is it articulated? Does the poem present a case of hierarchization between these different cultural references? Or would it be fairer to speak of cultural pluralism and parallelism? Finally, how important is the historical context of the 10th and 11th centuries in the development of this poem? Following our analysis of the poem and its historical context we will demonstrate that Judith is a work of cultural parallelism where each cultural reference is presented without the need for hierarchy. In addition, we will demonstrate that the Judith is the result of changes in Anglo-Saxon society between the 9th and 11th centuries and the political and military instability caused by conflicts between Anglo-Saxons and Scandinavians.

Relocations of the 'Outraged Slave': Transatlantic Reform Conversations through Douglass's Periodical Fiction

Fernandes, Nikki D 01 January 2017 (has links)
Through their editorial arrangements of African-American, Euro-American and European poetry, fiction and news, Frederick Douglass’s anti-slavery periodicals (The North Star and Frederick Douglass’ Paper) imagine a cosmopolitan discourse that predates the segregated realities of the antebellum United States. In spite of Southern blockades against the infiltration of Northern texts, Douglass’s material space uniquely capitalized on the limited restrictions of his reprinting culture to relocate the voice of the ‘outraged slave’ onto a global stage. From the poems of Phillis Wheatley and William Cowper to Charles Dickens’s Bleak House and Douglass’s own novella “The Heroic Slave,” this project considers how Douglass’s literary inclusions—and exclusions—complicate our static considerations of the historicized Douglass and exhibit his savvy insertions of black print into an exclusive, transatlantic nineteenth-century print culture.

In order to read poems about Brazilian subjects in the XVIII century, this thesis crosses somewhat unsystematic sources of doctrine and officii representations implicated in the epic imitation and revealed as institutional determinations of illustrious matter. In the Iberian Catholic regiments, armed men from wealthy families and the distinguished heritage strive for family legacy in different ways, such as careers in Law and in the Arms, lands whose hinterland was occupied on behalf of His Highness and the pacts network wich are supposed to be in compliance with the Royal Family. In this sense, heroic poetry, files and registries of notes, disputationes metaphysicas, historical reports, Portuguese decadas, etc, are discursive series within obedience distribution systems, because they are documents, monuments, production of evidences and attestations according to the Law processes. The main purpose of this thesis is the European war in the occupation of all the horizons, with its reproductible models of institutional establishment on appropriations of doctrine, changes in the school curricula, in jurisprudence, in epic poetry, in pastoral poems, etc. Thus, from the principles of doctrine to the narration of exemplar cases, the verification of the Truth and all trustful private things endow with true reasons for verosimilis subject sung in the epic poems. By the means of law, jurisprudence, metaphysical principles, the institutional machinery constitutes and codifies the discorse about the "conquest of the America process" or the "history of the Portuguese domain in Brazil" that such poems and histories report. Assuming that war is everywhere, and the officii also, many different jurisdictions are reported mainly because they authorize themselves mutually. But they are cited in an incomplete manner just to indicate the branches of the senses and they try to cross them momentarily with other res, among many genera and species of things, different traditions of doctrine and the parties discussions. In the studied texts in diverse lessons, the focus in this thesis covers the matter, as res inventionis, and some mechanisms for verifying the truth of the rhetoric matter.

Itinéraires du désir dans la philosophie de Giordano Bruno / The Concept of Desire in Giordano Bruno’s Philosophy

Fabris, Alberto 14 December 2018 (has links)
My PhD dissertation aims at analysing the concept of desire in relation to Giordano Bruno’s philosophy. Despite the relatively marginal place of this issue among secondary bibliography and its not immediately evident presence in Bruno’s works, I think that this kind of research can open apertinent and radical perspective on Bruno’s thought. Far from being a secondary aspect, the desire is at the core of Giordano Bruno’s philosophy and it embodies its immanent rhythm. In relation to the fundamental theme of Bruno’s philosophy – the way in which the finite realises the infinite – the question of desire can disclose to us new perspectives. I have looked at this problem from many perspectives, always attentive to express the systematic character under the great varieties of topicswe can find in the Nolana filosofia. I have proceeded diachronically, privileging a conceptual approach rather than a chronological account of Bruno’s thought. First, I have considered the Lampas triginta statuarum, a late Latin treatise in which the desire appears as the force that leads the tenebræ toexpress the infinity of forms they contain in potentiality. In the cosmological dialogues in Italian, the desire – immanent force that assures planets’ revolutions (and in that way the cycle of seasons andcivilisations) – realises in all the beings the vicissitude that allows it to “be everything and becomeeverything”. The comedy The Candle Bearer shows how the pursuit of a static, obsessional, andunnatural desire causes the loss of the three main characters. We can find the same “civil afflatus” inthe magical treatise De vinculis where the magic-philosopher builds through love (“the most powerfullink”) a republic that, through its citizens, reflects the infinite power of nature. Lastly, we will see how, in The Heroic Frenzies, the cognitive desire that allows the metamorphosis of the hunter Acteon in nature corresponds to the most human way to realise the infinite.

A honra, a glória e a morte na Ilíada e na Odisséia / The honor, the glory and the death in the Iliad and Odyssey

Pacheco, Antonio de Pádua 11 May 2009 (has links)
It verifies and analyzes the enchainment ideological used for Homer to order the death of Greek heroes principal of the epic cycle; the warrior ideal of the death beauty and the heroic ideal of the imperishable glory; the fate of the common man and the fate of the hero; the will of Zeus and the plain of Zeus; the death of heroes; the funeral games, registered in the Iliad and Odyssey. The data were obtained through: systematical reading of texts produced by ancients authors and by contemporarys authors, verifying the behavior of the Greeks of the Homeric period in the face of death. It points to as main results: there is a enchainment ideological what tie the deaths of the Homeric heroes principal, weaved for the poet and based in the epic cycle; there is a plain of Zeus to eliminate the heroes principal because the death these heroes cause suffering in the gods; the believe in the afterlife and the funerals processes adopted to the Greeks of Homeric period still were in formation; the Greek ancients not keep one systematic belief in one idea of resurrection of the soul or in one idea of life after-death. It finishes that there is a ideological directrix what order the epic plot in the Homeric poems; this ordering carry the heroes to accomplish their fates, following a enchainment what take into account the degree of the honor and warrior excellence; the funerals rites of the Greeks of Homeric period were consolidating and Homer collaborate in this process of the consolidation, what already was materialized in the Classic period.
