The epidemiology of injuries of female high school soccer players in the eThekwini district

South Africa, 2015. / Introduction: Participation of young females in soccer has started to increase in the past few years. Females participating in soccer are more vulnerable to injuries than males due to the nature of the sport especially because the sport is characterised as a vigorous, high intensity, intermittent ball and contact activity. Objective: This study sought to determine the epidemiology of injuries in high school female soccer players in the eThekwini district. Method: A quantitative approach using a cross sectional survey was used to determine the epidemiology of injuries in female high school soccer players in the eThekwini district. One-hundred-and-ninety-seven female high school soccer players, between the ages of 14 to 19 years who have played soccer for at least one season, from 27 female high schools in the eThekwini district were invited to participate. A self-administered questionnaire was used to determine the demographic profile of the players and the reported prevalence of injuries in the soccer players. The study also determined the profile of soccer related injuries, management of injuries, identified risk factors for injury, and compared injuries occurring during training and during matches. Results: Out of a total of 85 respondents only 31 sustained injuries. The injury prevalence for the season was 36.5%. Only 61 injuries (71.8%) were reported by the injured players. The rate of injury was 90 per 1000 athlete exposure hours during the season. Only two female players reported the five injuries while all 29 female players sustained at least one injury. The defenders (31.7%) and midfielders (28.6%) sustained the most injuries. Most injuries reported were contact in nature (12.9%). More injuries occurred during training (12.9%) rather than during matches (8.2%). The lower extremity (77.8%) was injured more than the upper extremity (22.2%). The knee (22.2%) and ankle (15.9%) were the most frequently injured body parts. Muscle injury (23.5%) was the most commonly reported followed by bruising (10.6%). Conclusion: Prevalence of injuries was high in the cohort studied. The lower limb, specifically the knee and ankle were most commonly injured. Muscle injury and bruising were the most common injury affecting the lower extremity. It is recommended that the study be extended to a larger cohort of school children.

Hoops, nets, and ballots : investigating the relationship between competitive sport socialization and political participation of female candidates

Although more women are successfully breaching the social, economic and political barriers that can prevent them from participating as electoral candidates, few women campaign for elected office. A dearth of female candidates may be understandable, given research demonstrating that women tend to avoid competition and competitive environments. Thus, elections – competitive by design – may attract fewer women than men. This thesis posits that the inherent competitiveness of electoral politics may deter women from campaigning for office. However, this work also forwards that competitive sport socialization during adolescence may prepare women for electoral competition. This paper examines the results of a self-administered survey mailed to 449 female candidates for municipal office. The survey investigated candidates’ adolescent experiences in competitive sports and attitudes relating to internal political efficacy. The results appear to demonstrate a strong correlation between competitive sport socialization and either positive or neutral evaluations of political competition. / x, 163 leaves ; 29 cm

The Effects of Video-Computerized Feedback on Competitive State Anxiety, Self-Efficacy, Effort, and Baseball Hitting-Task Performance

This study examined the effects of frame-by-frame video-computerized feedback on competitive state anxiety, self-efficacy, effort, and baseball performance of high school players. Players were randomly assigned to one of three feedback conditions: (a) Hitting score, (b) Hitting score and frame-by-frame analysis of a mechanically correct swing, (c) Hitting score and frame-by-frame analysis of participant's swing and a mechanically correct swing. Once per week for six weeks, the players completed three questionnaires: (a) Hitting Self-Efficacy Scale, (b) Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2C, and (c) Performance Effort Scale, and performed a hitting task. Results of the 3 (Group) x 6 (Trials) ANOVAs revealed no significant effects. This study does not support previous confidence-baseball hitting research.

The Roles of Coaches, Peers, and Parents in High School Athletes' Motivational Processes: A Mixed-Methods Study

Grounded in self-determination theory and achievement goal theory, the purpose of this mixed-methods study was to examine the underlying motivational processes from social environments created by coaches, peers, and parents to motivational outcomes in high school athletes, with an emphasis on the relative influence of social agents in basic psychological needs (i.e., autonomy, competence, and relatedness). The quantitative part of this study tested a hierarchical model of high school sport motivation in a final sample of 311 student athletes (204 boys, 107 girls) using structural equation modeling: social factors (coach-, peer-, and parent-created motivational climates) -> psychological mediators (need satisfaction and frustration) -> types of motivation (autonomous motivation, controlled motivation, and amotivation) -> consequences (subjective vitality, athlete burnout, and intention to drop out). Invariance across gender and across team type (varsity vs. non-varsity) was also tested. Adequate model fits were achieved in separate "brighter side" and "darker side" models across the overall sample, gender, and team type. The follow-up qualitative part of this study explored "how" beyond "what" coaches, peers, and parents contribute to the social environments, need frustration, and negative motivational outcomes in sport in a subsample of 37 student athletes (24 boys, 13 girls) who reported high amotivation/burnout and higher than average dropout intentions in the quantitative survey. Content analysis and observation were conducted to interpret the focus group interview data among athletes across gender and team type. The results of both quantitative and qualitative parts were integrated and compared to summarize the roles of coaches, peers, and parents in the "brighter and darker sides" of athletic experience in high school athletes.

Understanding high school athletes’ and coaches’ experiences regarding concussion-related behaviours in their sports : a qualitative study using the COM-B model

En utilisant le modèle « Capability Opportunity Motivation-Behaviour » (Michie et al., 2011), nous cherchions à comprendre les expériences des étudiants-athlètes d’écoles secondaires et de leurs entraîneurs par rapport aux comportements liés aux CCS. Nous avons mené des entrevues semi-structurées (M = 72 min) avec des athlètes (n = 10), des entraîneurs (n = 4) et des enseignants-entraîneurs (n = 2) d'une école secondaire impliqués dans le hockey sur glace, le basket-ball, le volley-ball et le rugby. Nous avons effectué une analyse dirigée de contenu en utilisant le modèle COM-B. Les athlètes et les entraîneurs ont décrit des expériences ayant eu un impact sur leur capacité à divulguer les symptômes (athlètes) et à gérer correctement la CCS (athlètes et entraîneurs). De plus, les participants ont décrit des facteurs qui ont influencé les opportunités à améliorer les connaissances en matière de CCS (athlètes et entraîneurs), de les déclarer (athlètes), de les gérer correctement (athlètes) et de les identifier (enseignants-entraîneurs). Enfin, les participants ont indiqué leurs motivations pour les décisions concernant le signalement des CCS (athlètes), le retrait du jeu (entraîneurs) et la bonne gestion des CCS (athlètes et entraîneurs). Les résultats de cette étude pourraient aider les chercheurs à intégrer la théorie du changement de comportement pour créer des interventions d'éducation sur les CCS. / Sport-related concussion (SRC) is a traumatic brain injury that has regrettably become prevalent in many contact or collision sports. High school athletes are more vulnerable to experiencing more severe symptomatology compared to adults due to the cognitive maturation that occurs throughout adolescence. Using the Capability Opportunity Motivation-Behaviour (COM-B) model, the innermost ring of the Behaviour Change Wheel (Michie et al., 2011), we sought to understand the experiences of high school athletes and coaches with concussion-related behaviours in their sports. We conducted qualitative semi-structured interviews (M = 72 min) with high school athletes (n = 10), coaches (n= 4), and teacher-coaches (n= 2) from a rural high school in New Brunswick, who were involved in ice hockey, basketball, volleyball, and rugby. We performed a directed content analysis of the interview transcripts using the COM-B model as pre-determined codes. Athletes and coaches described experiences that we felt impacted their capabilities for symptom disclosure (athletes), and for both athletes and coaches to properly manage SRC. Similarly, we interpreted that opportunities to improve SRC knowledge (athletes and coaches), to report SRC (athletes), to properly manage SRC (athletes) and to identify SRC (teacher-coach) were impacted by factors described in participants’ experiences. Lastly, participants described the motivational factors that impacted their SRC reporting (athletes), removal from play (coaches) and proper SRC management (athletes and coaches) behaviours. The findings from this study will ideally assist future researchers in designing more effective behavioural interventions to improve concussion safety among high school sport participants.
