Polarization of Nonlinear Thomson Scattering from a High Intensity Laser Focus

Pratt, Brittni Tasha 12 August 2020 (has links)
Thomson scattering from free electrons in a high-intensity laser focus has been widely studied analytically, but not many measurements of this scattering have been made. We measure polarization-resolved nonlinear Thomson scattering from electrons in a high-intensity laser focus using a parabolic mirror. The weak scattering signal is distinguished from background noise using single-photon detectors and nanosecond time-resolution to distinguish a prompt scattering signal from noise photons. The azimuthal and longitudinal components of the fundamental, second, and third harmonics were measured. Our measurements reasonably match theoretical results, but also show some asymmetry in the emission patterns.

Fysioterapeuters upplevelser och erfarenheter av att använda sig av the High Intensity Functional Exercise Program (the HIFE Program) på äldreboende / Physiotherapists experiences of using the High Intensity Functional Exercise Program (the HIFE Program) in nursing homes

Clark, Nicholas, Bengs, Jesper January 2021 (has links)
Background: The High Intensity Functional Exercise (HIFE) program has been shown to have good effect on physical function and ADL in elderly people living in nursing homes and dependent on assistance with activities in daily living (ADL). However, there is limited knowledge regarding physiotherapists' experiences of using HIFE in nursing homes. This study can help to understand how physiotherapists can perform high-quality training with this population.    Aim: To investigate physiotherapists' experiences of HIFE with elderly people living in nursing homes.    Methods: To achieve the objective of this study a qualitative design was chosen and five physiotherapists that have worked according to HIFE in nursing homes in Sweden were interviewed using a semi-structured approach. The interviews were analyzed using qualitative content analysis.    Results: Based on the collated data, four categories were identified with a total of 17 subcategories: Successful implementation requires the commitment of many, Important to actively choose participants, Push the participants close to their limits and Effects of the training seen on many levels.   Conclusion: All physiotherapists expressed a great need for HIFE in nursing homes. HIFE was considered suitable for many of the residents and made it possible to challenge the participants to a high intensity and thus saw a greater effect. In order to succeed, commitment is required from a number of people before, during and after the training period.

Maximum Strength and Strength Training - a Relationship to Endurance?

Stone, Michael, Stone, Meg E., Sands, William A., Pierce, Kyle C., Newton, Robert U., Haff, G. Gregory, Carlock, Jon 01 January 2006 (has links)
Endurance can be defined as the ability to maintain or to repeat a given force or power output. The sport performance-endurance relationship is a multi-factorial concept. However, evidence indicates that maximum strength is a major component. Conceptually, endurance is a continuum. The literature indicates that (a) maximum strength is moderately to strongly related to endurance capabilities and associated factors, a relationship that is likely stronger for high intensity exercise endurance (HIEE) activities than for low intensity exercise endurance (LIEE); (b) strength training can increase both HIEE and LIEE, the effect being greater for HIEE; (c) the volume of strength training plays a role in endurance adaptation; and (d) mechanical specificity and training program variables also play a role in the degree of adaptation.

Eriksson, Helena, Holmér, Cecilia January 2018 (has links)
The following quantitative study examined individuals' motivational factors to trai low or high intensity group training workouts. In an attempt to explain this, a psychological theory called Self-Determination theory was used, which is a simplification of reality to clarify people's motivation. The study was done in the form of a questionnaire survey in which questionnaires were divided into two chosen training facilities, before and after two different group training classes. Fifty questionnaires were distributed at each training facility. Eighty women and twenty men aged 17-67 years, participated in the study. Of these, fifty-two individuals went to the high-intensity group training session CXWORX and forty-eight individuals went to the low-intensity group training session Bodybalance. It is offered predominantly more high-intensity than low-intensity group training classes, at both facilities for this study. To evaluate individuals' motivation for physical activity, a 10-question form, modified from Recreational Exercise Motivation Measure, REMM, was used. Participants were asked to rate each item on a 5-point Likert scale, where 1 = Not true at all and 5 = Completely agreed. At the beginning of the survey, there were four open questions, where respondents answered themselves, which became the qualitative part of the study. The answers to the questions were then coded to four response categories, based on a synthesis of Morrison et al (2003, 111-120).The results of the study show differences in motivational factors between age, sex and type of group training class. In conclusion, the results suggest that both internal and external motivational factors are important for individuals' motivation to exercise. The internal for maintaining exercise over time and the external to exercise, such as appearance and fitness for example. Keywords: physical activity, group training, high intensity, low intensity and motivation.

Effect of High Intensity Ultrasound on the Crystallization Behavior of Interesterified Fats

Kadamne, Jeta Vijay 01 May 2018 (has links)
The process of partial hydrogenation produces trans fats and the fats that undergo this process are called partially hydrogenated fats (PHF). Clinical studies have shown a strong association between PHF and coronary heart diseases. In 2015 The U.S. Food and Drug Administration removed the Generally recognized as safe or "GRAS" status of PHF. These fats were used in confectionary, margarines, shortenings, doughnuts, cookies, cakes, etc. The PHF serve a function in food by providing a higher shelf life and a desired harder structure due to their higher melting point. Hence, the food industry is currently looking for PHF alternatives which serve the function but have no harmful health effects. One of the alternatives to replace PHF is to use interesterified fats that have a low level of saturation that makes them healthier. However, these new fats are too soft with restricted use in many food applications. In this study, we explored the use of high intensity ultrasound (HIU) to improve the functional properties of interesterified fats and make them harder. Our study showed that HIU formed small crystals in these fats and increased their viscosity. The results from this study on the flavor release from the interesterified fats showed that the physical structure and hence the amount of solid fat in the sample affected its flavor perception. The solid fats had higher flavor perception than the liquid fat samples. The goal of this study is to improve the functionality of the interesterified fats using HIU and understand the flavor release from these fats to make substitution in food products easier.

Snabbhet. - Speed - a crucial moment in elite soccer. A study on research, education and practical execution of explosive training in elite Swedish soccer

Crépin, Fredrik January 2008 (has links)
Aim: The objective of the study is to examine the Swedish soccer players movementpatterns to justify the importance of high-intensity and sprint training, and further toanalyse the priority and the value of this training in the scientific literature, in trainerseducation and in practice.Method: The concept of high-intensity and sprint training is analyzed from threeangles; Research, Education and the Practical execution perspective. The researchperspective has been analyzed through the relevant results in the field. The educationperspective has been analyzed according to the Swedish Football Federation trainereducation and the practical performance has been analyzed by a interview study onrelevant coaches in Swedish professional soccer teams. These perspectives have beendiscussed against each other in a model that can be viewed as a ladder of knowledge, where information and knowledge is generated by research, where education serves as alink and where the practical performance reflects the knowledge and competencydevelopment that has taken place over time. Conclusion: High-intensity sprints can be shown to be substantially increased byfunctional training. Both the research and the literature in coach education shows thatimprovements can be achieved by isolated sprint training or through relevant resistanttraining, but that the most optimal is to train this aspect in soccerspecific situations withthe ball. Yet it seems that this still has a low priority in practice. The coaches in thestudy carries out mainly isolated sprint exercises without the ball. Although theexplosive capacity is a fresh product that continuously needs to be stimulated, thetrainers explains that they do not implement form of training at all during pre-season.
