Arriaga Rivera, Armando 10 April 2018 (has links)
Most work on old maps has been to explain the forms of representation, its various uses and applications. At mid-twentieth and early twenty-first centuries it has developed historical cartography, means by which maps were made with old information or data mapping planes. In this paper the goal is to use the current mapping methods to reconstruct maps, based on the platform of geographic information systems (GIS); international conventional symbols; physical-geographical context ofthe time and current reference system for mapping and as a tool for spatial analysis.

Adilson Franceschini 17 December 2014 (has links)
Raymond Aron (1905-1983) is a French author best known for his conservatism in the field of policy analysis. However, his conservative view is founded on critical reflections that concern the historical knowledge. Thus, it is necessary to explore a little known dimension of the intellectual production of Raymond Aron, analyzing his ideas about knowledge in order to find the foundations of his political position. Identifying and studying the construction plan of these epistemological ideas, structure argumentative and destination of such ideas. Indeed, it is possible to recognize the foundations of aronian ethics of the political prudence in the critical conception of knowledge. Moreover, it is reasonable to note the methodological need to seek a tripartite relationship between experience, formation and intellectual development in the study of ideas that concern knowledge.

Abstract: This dissertation has as its main theme the presence of the "Clarim" in Brazil and it uses as a musical instrument in the Royal and Imperial Chapel of Rio de Janeiro in the beginning of the nineteenth century. According to our research, in the course of Brazilian history "clarim" was one of the names used to refer to the natural trumpet. In this work mention is made to extant information available on the presence of the trumpet in this country; data has been collected on its use from the earliest days of the nation to the middle of the 19thcentury which coincides with the appearance and use of the chromatic trumpet by the introduction of valves. Initially we demonstrate the historical contextualization of this instrument in a general way, investigating aspects about its possible origins and development to the time of the introduction of valves; research is also included on the reconstruction of the historical trumpet and its use in modern day performances. We have also investigated the earliest ethnic groups in this country that may have had involvement with the natural trumpet with special attention to its use in the Northeastern region and in the State of Minas Gerais, but most especially in the Royal and Imperial Chapel of Rio de Janeiro in the early Nineteenth Century. At this time upon the arrival of the Portuguese Court to the South American continent, questions are raised on subjects such as the influence and reflection of European musical practice of the time in Brazil; repertoire and performance possibilities of the clarim as exemplified by musical manuscripts belonging to the "Acervo do Cabido Metropolitano" of Rio de Janeiro. A thematic bibliography and biographical information on trumpet players active in the Chapel or in the city of Rio de Janeiro during the nineteenth century is also provided. / Mestrado / Praticas Interpretativas / Mestre em Música

"Transcolonial circuits" : historical fiction and national identities in Ireland, Scotland, and Canada

Cabajsky, Andrea 11 1900 (has links)
'"Transcolonial Circuits': Historical Fiction and National Identities in Ireland, Scotland, and Canada" explores the intersections between gender, canon-formation, and literary genre in order to argue that English- and French-Canadian historical fiction was influenced, both in form and content, by the precedent-setting fictions o f Scotland and Ireland in the early nineteenth century. Conceived in the spirit o f Katie Trumpener's Bardic Nationalism: The Romantic Novel and the British Empire (1997), this dissertation extends Trumpener's examination of nineteenth-century British and Canadian romantic fiction by exploring in greater detail the flow of ideas and literary techniques between Ireland, Scotland, and English and French Canada. It does so in order to revise critical understandings of the formal and thematic origins and development of Canadian historical fiction from the nineteenth century to the present. Chapter One functions as a series of literary snapshots that examine historically the critical and popular reception of novels by Maria Edgeworth and Sydney Owenson in Ireland, Sir Walter Scott in Scotland, John Richardson, William Kirby, and Jean Mcllwraith in English Canada, and Philippe Aubert de Gaspe and Napoleon Bourassa in French Canada. I pay particular attention to the issues o f gender and political ideology as inseparable from the history of the novel itself. In Chapter Two, by focussing on the travel trope, I examine in detail how Irish, Scottish, and Canadian writers transformed the investigative journeys of Samuel Johnson and Arthur Young into journeys of resistance to the dictates of the metropolis. Chapter Three focuses on the complications of marriage as a metaphor o f intercultural union. It pays particular attention to the intersections between gender, sexuality, and colonial identity. The Conclusion extends the concerns raised in the thesis about the relationship between historical writing and national identity to the late-twentieth-century Canadian context, by examining the adaptation of literary and historiographical conventions to the medium of television in the CBC/SRC television series Canada: A People's History, which aired in 2001-02. / Arts, Faculty of / English, Department of / Graduate

`n Literer-historiese ondersoek na Josua 3 en 4 (Afrikaans)

Wildenboer, J.M. (Johannes Michael) 30 July 2010 (has links)
The composition of Joshua 3 and 4 forms the main focus of this study. Although Joshua 3 and 4 have been the subject of many studies, there have been no satisfactory explanation of the many contradictions and incoherence in these chapters. Apart form the literary problems regarding the composition of Joshua 3 and 4, some challenging historical questions arise from the study of these chapters. Therefore, this literary study of Joshua 3 and 4 will not also involve some broader literary questions like the position of the book of Joshua in the Canon, but it will also attempt to answer historical questions about Israel`s past. My hypothesis is that that the final text of Joshua 3 and 4 is the result of several redactions. The original narrative of the Jordan crossing forms the main part of these chapters. This original deuteronomistic narrative was originally part of a Deuteronomistic History that encompassed Deuteronomy, Joshua, and some parts of 1 and 2 Samuel as well as the books of 1 and 2 Kings. The Deuteronomistic History originated in the exile, and was the subject of major editing up to the Persian era. Joshua 3 and 4 reflects the process of the formation of the Pentateuch. The original deuteronomistic narrative of the Jordan crossing was subsequently supplemented by a post-priestly narrative which enhanced the miracle of the crossing. This supplement probably took place when the priestly composition (Ex-Num) was joined to the deuteronomistic composition (Deut-2 Kon) as part of an compromise between rival priestly groups. The book of Deuteronomy was eventually incorporated in the foregoing books (Ex-Num) to form a Pentateuch. As a result of this process, the book of Joshua was cut off from Deuteronomy and became a post-Deuteronomic book. This explains not only the affinities and differences between Joshua and Deuteronomy, but also the peculiar position of the book of Joshua in the Canon. The narrative of the twelve memorial stones (Joshua 4) forms part of an etiological formula, found throughout Joshua 1-12. These etiological reference points reflects the lists of the returning exiles and the builders of the Jerusalem`s walls in the books of Ezra and Nehemiah. Furthermore, these etiological references reflects the borders of the post-exilic Israel. Joshua 4 is the post-exilic Israel`s way of interpreting the pre-exilic conquest narratives in Joshua 1-12 in order to make sense of their present situation. There are also references to the post-deuteronomistic emphasis on many sanctuaries (which probably served to legitimize the Samaritan Temple at Mount Gerizim. The book of Joshua is not to be classified as history. This study enhances the hypothesis that the book of Joshua embodies the ideology of post-exilic Judaism. In its final form, the book probably served as an attempt to bring a compromise between rival priesthoods and rival ideologies. Although the book had pre-exilic (deuteronomistic) origins, it was subsequently edited to function in a post-exilic context when the people of Israel were facing a new future with new possibilities. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2010. / Old Testament Studies / unrestricted

Högstadieungdomar skriver historia på bloggen : undervisning, literacy och historiemedvetande i ett nytt medielandskap / Students Blog about History : Teaching, Literacy and Historical Consciousness in a New Media Environment

Johansson, Cecilia January 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to study the literacy formed when a class blog is used as a tool for students studying history and explore how this particular literacy is used to generate historical knowledge. The study was conducted during the course of a project in which ninth-grade students contributed entries to a common blog in the form of a diary written by individuals who experienced the Second World War. Its three major objectives were to study the students' perception of the blog in relation to their gender and level of historical knowledge; how they and their teacher esta-blished and used the formed literacy; and how the students related to this in the production of historical knowledge. In analyzing the results, a concept of literacy was used based on seven writing practices all linked to the new medium and history education. The study was based on a questionnaire, interviews and various student texts. In order to perform a content analysis on the study results a theoretical framework for historical conscious-ness was included. The results show that in using the writing practices a literacy characterized by colla-borative authorship was formed. The study concludes that this affects both what and how the students learn. Together they show each other that history is comprised of many small stories, not necessarily strictly coherent with the general history as told by their textbooks. Examining the students’ blog entries made a new learning process visible that enabled the enhancement of their historical consciousness. / <p></p><p></p>

The making of a historical consciousness in Henry County, Indiana: a case study of the Henry County Historical Society, 1887-1950

Badgley, Benjamin Joseph 08 1900 (has links)
The residents of Henry County, through the evolving practices of collecting and preserving local history, organized and developed a sustainable local historical society. The 1902 dedication ceremony, which signaled the beginning of the “museum” chapter of the HCHS, was only one of many steps in the institutionalization of local history in Henry County. The foundation of a sustainable local historical society is constructed upon permanent quarters and a historical collection. Additional requisite building blocks include wide public support, adequate and consistent funding, and a paid individual to facilitate and manage the museum, its collections, and various other day-to-day operations and activities. In Henry County, this blueprint for sustainability was greatly facilitated by the county’s territorial beginnings and its cultural development before the Civil War, as well as the county’s old settlers’ society movement and local history writing during the latter half of the nineteenth century. With this said, historical societies were “not created in a vacuum” but rather amid a complex historical framework encompassing local, regional, and national contexts. For Henry County, this framework consisted of many varied but constituent parts. The American Centennial in 1876, industrialization, Quakerism, the popularity of Civil War history and commemoration in Indiana that peaked around 1900, and a state historical movement and the simultaneous development of other historical organizations following the Indiana Centennial in 1916 were also instrumental in the county’s evolving dedication to preserving local history and the organization’s course toward sustainability.
