Monteiro Lobato: construção ou denúncia do pensamento racista? / Construction or denunciation of racist thought?

Formighieri, Ana Paula de Souza 15 May 2017 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 2 Ana_Formighieri2017.pdf: 1512618 bytes, checksum: 8713452ecbb7d581e8fc7c439d446f5b (MD5) license_rdf: 0 bytes, checksum: d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427e (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-05-15 / In the last few years, questions have emerged related to the supposed racism expressed in letters and in the literary work by Monteiro Lobato. In this context, different groups take diverse stands on the matters of how to define and how to use Lobato's work in the classroom. Without disregarding the debate, there is the need to carry out the present research, with the intention of analysing Monteiro Lobato and his literary work within his social and historical context. His work and his way of thinking were studied in the perspective of his historical context, considering the theoretical, scientific, cultural, and legislative limitations of his time. In the same perspective, it was attempted to verify the way Lobato gives voice to his characters in his fictional works: Negrinha and O Presidente Negro. In this case, more than noting the words and individual behavior of the characters, it is also observed in which characters the demeaning adjectives are used, what their behavior is throughout the plot and what messages are expressed about the racial issue. This study starts from the assumption that analyzing terms individually does not expose the author's racism, making it necessary to understand his work within the set of social elements of his time. The research methodology used was literature review and qualitative research, considering that, as it is aimed to comprehend Lobato's work as a historical process, it becomes fundamental to carry out theoretical and legislative documents that might enlighten the context that constituted the author as a historical character. Monteiro Lobato is considered an important author to understand and reflect upon Brazilian memory, especially when it comes to culture and its influence in education. It is important to highlight that the present context demands severe opposition against racism, lest reproducing historical prejudice against the Negro. Establishing connections between the characters’ declarations and the plot’s development, as well as between Lobato’s production and his historical context it was assured not to require from the past the same kinds of consciousness, language, and approach that are from the 21st century. Thus, it is concluded that Lobato was an interlocutor of the different lines of thought expressed in the beginning of the 20th century; therefore, he cannot be considered racist or a spokesperson for racial segregation through only excerpts from his literary work, since his life and his work are important historical sources that enlighten the social and racial complexity that constitutes the Brazilian society to this day.

Historical Analysis of Recreational Beach Enterococci Levels; Using Logistic Regression as an Advisory Tool

Aranda, Diana Ixchel 01 January 2013 (has links)
Enterococci levels are measured to assess water safety in recreational beaches through a state surveillance program. This surveillance informs the public of beach safety, yet the sampling methodology is limited to only making an advisory posting one sample at a time. This methodology poses a challenge for managers such as: 24 hour advisory waiting period, untested days and extreme variability of enterococci levels in the environment. Therefore, there is a need to integrate adaptive management methodologies that can assist managers to proactively assess beach water safety. This study explored the utility of a historical analysis and logistic regression modeling as a method and as an advisory tool. The analysis utilized 10 years of enterococci surveillance data (7,422 samples) from 15 sub-tropical beaches in Miami-Dade County, Florida. It was determined that Miami beaches have historical low enterococci exceedance counts (3% of total data), that there are some beaches that are more propense to higher exceedance counts than others and that the wet season overall did not readily appear to affect exceedances counts. The logistic regression model utilized an exceedance/ non-exceedance dichotomy and spatial, temporal and annual variables. The model indicated that the overall range of probability of having an exceedance for the sampled beaches under each variable was less than 10%. The ability to use this model and get probability results showed that logistic regression is an accurate statistical tool that provides the historical probabilities of an exceedance on a beach and can complement a random sampling methodology. Furthermore it’s a simple and inexpensive methodology that provides the ability to categorize and recognize patterns estimating the surveillance-managed sample sites probabilities that provides foresight as to where to focus resources in order to reduce risk and facilitating beach management. Through the use of a historical analysis and a logistic regression model, it is possible to address dynamic recreational beach environments with a large-scale view and in a historically comprehensive manner, instead of only making management choices sample by sample.

A Selective Lineage of Mexican Bassoonists

Cruz, Jorge, Jr. 08 1900 (has links)
Spanish settlers brought the precursor to the bassoon, el bajón, to Mexico in the late sixteenth century. Documentation of the bassoon was intermittently from the sixteenth century on, the current playing traditions were not established until the second half of the twentieth century. Bassoon education in Mexico flourished in the 1970's because several bassoonists became expatriates, and chose to live and work in Mexico for the entirety of their careers. Two major pedagogues, Lazar Stoychev and Jerzy Lemiszka paved the way for the current Mexican bassoon community. This dissertation presents a selective lineage of bassoonists who have held positions in major Mexican orchestras and universities since the mid-twentieth century. The purpose of this study is to recognize the contributions these players and teachers have given to the bassoon world. In recent years, Mexican bassoonists have commissioned hundreds of works for the bassoon and this significant achievement has placed the Mexican bassoon community in an upward trajectory. To place these players in proper historical context, a brief history of classical music institutions in Mexico since the sixteenth century is given. This dissertation documents the history and pedagogy of recent bassoonists in Mexico via a cohesive family tree.

Doctrinal and Historical Analysis of Young Women's Education in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

Erickson, Andrea 14 March 2009 (has links) (PDF)
First, this thesis acknowledges that Jesus Christ is the central figure in the plan of salvation, and that the principal doctrine in the young women's curriculum should detail the Lord's atoning sacrifice (see Helaman 5:12). Second, it emphasizes the importance of God's law of witnesses (see Duet 19:15, Matt 18:16, 2 Cor 13:1, D&C 6:28). Third, it discusses the principles of edification within the young women's learning environment. Fourth, it explains the need to focus curriculum on universal and unchanging doctrine. The doctrine is the most crucial component in measuring the young women curriculum according to the latest standards offered by the Church Curriculum Department, the Seminaries and Institutes of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint (S&I) and the Young Women Department. Brief histories of how these organizations developed their tools justify their use in this thesis. Finally, I share how the research was conducted and report findings. All of these sections are to aid the reader's vision of the lessons contained in the curriculum designed for young women in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This thesis emphasizes lessons rooted in universal and unchanging doctrine in order for young women to formulate timeless and true principles. These principles, if lived, will then allow the young women to obtain testimonies that assist them in safely navigating their course in the spiritually treacherous environment spoken of in scripture (see 2 Tim 3:1). This thesis recognizes the family as the primary focus of gospel instruction, accentuating how the Young Women Department is support to the family. The General Young Women leaders exemplify the virtues requisite in today's faithful young women of the Church, and is it essential to follow their lead in curriculum updates. This thesis is meant to present timeless principles, historical witnesses of these principles (including an abbreviated doctrinal history used in the early organization), an analysis of young women curriculum in an effort to provide the Young Women organization information useful in further developing curriculum that requires minimal updating. In addition, I will offer a simple suggestion to assist in the development of a curriculum proposal which would have the enabling power to successfully teach a world-wide audience of young women.

The dynamics of change in public policy : a comparative historical analysis of cultural policies in Mexico and Argentina, 1983-2009

Bordat, Élodie 02 June 2014 (has links)
How should we explain change in cultural policy in Mexico and Argentina? Through a comparative historical analysis, this thesis shows the emergence, institutionalization and evolution of the cultural sector's public policy in these two Latin American countries, from 1983 to 2009. It addresses the changes induced by processes of decentralization, transnationalization and the rise of the private sector (both profit and non-profit) in Mexican and Argentinean cultural policy. The central hypothesis is that dynamics of change in cultural policy may be understood by taking into account these two countries' socio-economic and political "contexts", and by drawing on four analytical dimensions: actors, cognitive representations, institutional frameworks and public policy instruments. This comparative study thus combines a neo-institutionalist and cognitive analysis of change.

Vzestup a pád News of the World / The Rise and Fall of News of the World

Grieslerová, Martina January 2013 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with the British Sunday tabloid paper News of the World. By using the method of historical analysis it covers all its history from its foundation to its closure. The aim of this thesis is to put the newspaper's beginning, growth and end into the context of its era. The first chapters describe the rise of periodical press in Great Britain and in connection with that the social situation and technological progress in print. The chapters also deal with the first stage of development of News of the World, that is, when it was owned by the Carr family. On the grounds of socio-economic and political situation the chapters discover which factors added to the massive growth of circulation and big popularity of this Sunday paper. The second half of this thesis covers the development of the newspaper under the ownership of Rupert Murdoch, starting with the battle over its buy out against Robert Maxwell. The thesis analyses changes Murdoch implemented and brings examples of scandals and controversies this newspaper had throughout all its history. The last chapter addresses the phone-hacking scandal which led to the paper's closure after 168 years and its consequences to Murdoch's media empire News Corporation, as well as to the British newspapers market and its self-regulatory principles.

Analyzing how authors have related determinism and radical behaviorism means to analyze the verbal behavior of the authors and its controlling variables. Specifically, this study analyze: the distribution of the articles that discuss the relations between radical behaviorism and determinism throughout the years; the journals that they were published; the authorship of the articles; the citation of Skinner s works in these articles; the kind of citation made and the definitions of determinism found in the articles. The verbal responses of the authors were compared to Skinner s verbal responses (as understood by the authors); historical analysis of the theme of this study was identified. The results show that there was a high rate of publication from the end of the 80 s to the beginning of this decade. The Behavior Analyst and Behaviorism and Philosophy were that journals that had more articles published about this theme. 141 different publications of Skinner were cited in the articles. The most common kind of citation was citing some part of Skinner s work directly. The most common definitions of determinism found were those that defined determinism as mechanism causal mode. The second most common definitions of determinism were those that defined determinism as selection by consequences. Seven different types of relations between radical behaviorism and determinism were found. Except for one established relation, all the others were considered determinist: 1) denial of determinism; 2) assertion of determinism (this relation refers to specific verbal responses that explicitly asserts that radical behaviorism is determinist in relation to verbal responses that deny determinism); 3) approximation of mechanistic modes; 4) dissociation from mechanistic modes; 5) dissociation from teleological causal modes; 6) approximation of causal modes that search for the causes of behavior in external environmental variables and 7) approximation of causal modes that consider different levels of determination (e.g. phylogenetic, ontogenetic and cultural). Dissociation from mechanistic models was the most common relation identified in the articles. Few articles made historical analysis. Most of the authors think they have the same position about this theme as did Skinner / Esta pesquisa teve por objetivo analisar historicamente, a partir de periódicos nacionais e estrangeiros, como diferentes autores têm abordado as relações entre behaviorismo radical e determinismo.

Representação direta voluntária na conclusão de contratos: delineamento histórico e de custos / Direct and voluntary representation in the conclusion of contracts: historical plan and cost analysis

Martin, André 14 May 2012 (has links)
This dissertation analyzes the direct and voluntary representation from three different scopes: (i) historical, (ii) structural, and (iii) economical. The historic profile is broached from a brief historiographical construction of the development of representation from tha classical Roman period, through the Middle Ages and its transmutations, with concessions made to the Roman maxim alteri stipulari nemo potest, until the construction proposed by German Pandect author, Laband. The Laband construction, improved by Hupka, is analyzed, subsequently, under the present civil perspective, retaking some of the proposals of the model idealized by Laband-Hupka and some criticism to this model, bringing as central point of discussion the abstraction of representations towards the contract of mandate and other management relationships. The representative figure is, then, put under economical analysis, under the magnifying glass of Law and Economics. The analysis exceeds the matter of economy of costs that is offered by representation, and which is rather explicit, to analyze, under the perspective of the Agency Theorie and the Costs of Transaction Theorie, the costs generated by this figure in transaction and closing of contracts

AN EXAMINATION OF CORPORATE AGRIBUSINESS FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE: HOW AGRIBUSINESSES PERFORM OVER TIME AND UNDER VARIOUS CONDITIONS

Enlow, Sierra J 01 January 2012 (has links)
While several studies examine the managerial structure of privately owned agribusinesses, few studies take a comprehensive look at publically traded agribusiness firms. Our study examines the historical position of agribusiness compared to the market, and then studies the impact of the global economic and financial crisis. The objective of this study is to pinpoint effects of corporate financial management strategies, commonly researched in financial literature on agribusiness firms’ performance. Through utilizing a quantile regression we find that agribusiness position in times of financial crisis is directly related to firm performance. As we examine internal factors, several interesting impacts of managerial factors emerge. These results are useful for agribusiness firms seeking to improve their performance, as we show which management strategies related to capital structure, and firm size are associated with an increase in profitability based on the performance record of the agribusiness. Additionally, we examine how these factors impact internal financial distress of the agribusiness firms. Our conclusions clarify the impact of traditional financial management techniques on agribusiness firms and lead to questions for further research. Ultimately, the presented research provides a foundational knowledge of corporate agribusinesses financial performance.
