Roth, Markus 22 September 2023 (has links)
This article addresses a particular and as-yet insufficiently explained manner of employing the 5–6 consecutive in Schubert that can be understood as a circle of enharmonic half-steps. The argumentation embraces the tension between systematic and historically informed modes of thought, revealing latent contradictions that are supported using documents drawn from early reception history of this work.

Doppelt hören: Eine populäre Chanson im Spiegel ihrer Bearbeitungen

Roth, Markus 27 October 2023 (has links)
The present article combines both cultural-historical and analytical reflections on »art-song reworking« of the late fifteenth century. Using the example of several reworkings of Malheur me bat – from Agricola, Josquin, and Obrecht – references are discussed primarily from the point of view of the content. In an imaginary dialog with »expert listeners« of the past, the question is raised, in which manner the composer of the respective chanson masses either highlighted, weakened or exaggerated specific idiosyncrasies of the underlying original.

Virtuosa di Musica di Camera: A Performance Edition of Sonata in F Major, Op. 1, No. 2 by Anna Bon di Venezia

Alvarado Piña, Maria Gabriela 05 1900 (has links)
The flute music of Anna Bon di Venezia (1738–ca. 1767) belongs to the group of long-overlooked compositions by women composers throughout history worthy of rediscovery. This dissertation includes a discussion of Bon's life and music, as well as the artistic, historical, and theoretical significance of her compositions. It also presents biographical research on Bon, including Michaela Krucsay's dissertation, which provides new evidence of Bon's birth date, which had been uncertain up until 2015. Bon's Sonata in F Major for flute and basso continuo is analyzed to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the work. A table is provided explaining specific ornaments and articulations added to the performance edition. In addition, this dissertation includes analyses of sonatas by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714–1788) and Johann Joachim Quantz (1697–1773) to contextualize Bon's sonatas within the standard flute repertoire. This dissertation expands the music scholarship on this distinguished composer and performer and provides a historically informed performance edition of the Sonata in F Major, op. 1, no. 2, for flute and piano, to serve as a model to modern flutists for historically informed performances of Bon's entire opus 1.

"Suzanne" sous un nouveau jour : la fabrique d'une musique à l'ancienne et de ses singularités au prisme d'une musicologie de terrain / "Suzanne un jour" in a new light : the making of a period music and of its singularities through the lens of a field musicology

Haug, Benoît 04 December 2017 (has links)
What does it mean to play Renaissance music in the 21st century? Taking into account that the depth of an experience derives from its singularity, the present dissertation looks at this general question by focusing on a specific process: a specialized ensemble rehearsing and recording a 16th century song. A close reading of this process makes it clear that there is inherent value in observing musicians in the year 2014 engaged in repeat performances of “Suzanne un jour” by Didier Lupi. This observation clarifies how a musical performance is created and developed and reveals the modalities of the collective and individual experiences involved. Moreover, this detail-oriented and singularist epistemology is useful in other respects, whether to comprehend a five-week recording project or to write a five-century history of “Suzanne.”

"...världens skridskotystnad före Bach" : historiskt informerad uppförandepraxis ur ett kontextuellt musikontologiskt perspektiv, belyst genom en fallstudie av Sonat i E-dur, BWV 1035, av J S Bach / "...the world in a skater's silence before Bach" : Historically Informed Performance in the Perspective of Contextual Musical Ontology, Illustrated through a Case Study of Sonata in E-major,BWV 1035, by J S Bach

Ericsson, Lena Weman January 2008 (has links)
The aim of the present study is to explore the so-called historically informed performance movement, which also is my own musical performance tradition, from a general perspective grounded in musical philosophy. The discussions concerning this performance tradition have been dominated by different subjects, such as musical works, authenticity, intention and interpretation. The study focuses on Western art music where the performance of the music, the sounding realisation, of a notated work is central. Therefore, the performance in connection with the abovementioned subjects is of prime interest. This more overarching theme gave rise to the following questions: What factors can be considered decisive for whether a performance is a historically informed performance or not? How can these factors be identified? Does this mean that there are instructions in the music that I, as a musician, must obey? What does my artistic freedom look like? Where can I find it? The path to tentative answers to these questions is taken via theoretical discussions and the application of the theory in method and analyses as well as in interpretation. The theoretical perspective of the study is based on contextual musical ontology. The scientific theoretical framework, emanating from this ontology, is formulated in the field of social constructionism. The performance can, through this perspective, be identified as an indispensable part of the musical work, which also implies that the notated work itself is not sufficient to identify the work. Further, the emphasis on the context's importance for the performance in order to allow the performance to be of the work in question implies the necessity of awareness of the context of the work. This concept is deepened in the study through the emphasis on the importance for the performance, in a broad perspective, of the historical as well as the contemporary socio-cultural context. For the work itself this means that the identity of the work is unstable, it is constantly changing, since the different performances of the work that are parts of the work can never be identical. The perspective is based on social constructivist theories about knowledge. With contextual musical ontology as a point of departure, a strategy is formulated concerning analysis and investigation of a musical work. This strategy focuses on the notation, the instrumentation, and historical performance conventions. These three parts interact with one another and in the study they are formulated as being inseparable from the performance of the work. The theoretical part of the study is followed by a case study in which a sonata by Johann Sebastian Bach is studied from the articulated theoretical perspective. The case study contains an investigative part and an interpretative part. The work's notation is always in focus in the investigative and descriptive part, with emphasis on the socio-cultural context connected to the notation. Through the sounding interpretations, the different performances, the final chapter results in a summary of the study as a whole. The employment of historically-informed performance practices in present-day tuba performances of two Italian baroque violoncello transcriptions.

Coker, Bradley Gene 05 1900 (has links)
As several Italian baroque violoncello transcriptions have entered the standard performance repertory for both high school and collegiate tubists, and as numerous texts, articles, and baroque performance instruction courses have illuminated a new realm of performance possibilities, no published document has provided specific, thorough, and sample approaches to performance on the tuba of a given piece (or pieces) through a detailed application of materials found in any singular source or combination of sources. Many of the existing articles and texts that approach the subject focus largely on ornamentation, while limiting the discussion and application of the following topics: tempo, spirit, affect, notation, rhythm, dynamics, and articulation. This document examines such topics and provides detailed explanations and suggestions of historically-informed characteristics applicable to two movements each from the R. Winston Morris transcription of Antonio Vivaldi's Sonata No. 3 in A Minor and the Donald C. Little/Richard B. Nelson transcription of Benedetto Marcello's Sonata No. V in C Major.
