Cardiovascular and Hormonal Responses to Orthostasis Following Four Hours of Head-Down Rest in Endurance-Exercise-Trained and Untrained Subjects

Chen, Jia-Jen 12 1900 (has links)
Cardiovascular and hormonal responses to +700 head-up tilt (HUT: orthostatic challenge) were compared between six endurance exercise trained (ET) and six untrained (UT) subjects prior to and immediately following 4 hours of -60 head-down rest (HDR). The ET subjects showed a significant (P < 0.05) decrease in orthostatic tolerance time (pre syncopal symptoms) during post-HDR HUT, while no difference was observed between ET and UT groups in pre-HDR HUT. The volume regulatory hormonal responses were similar between ET and UT groups whether during HUT or HDR. The pre-syncopal subjects had a greater increase in plasma arginine vasopressin and less increase in plasma renin activity and plasma aldosterone during HUT than was observed in non syncopal subjects. These data suggest that HDR deconditioning was more effective in the ET subjects.

The impact of high- vs. low-load resistance training on measures of muscle activation, strength, body composition, and hormonal markers

Bello, Marissa Laina 12 May 2022 (has links)
Resistance training has shifted towards a high- vs low-load training approach. Heavier loads are suggested to maximally recruit motor units and optimize strength adaptations, whereas lower loads stimulate hypertrophy. However, a majority of the research has not used a true strength range when assessing load. Therefore, the purpose of this investigation was to examine and determine significant differences in strength, body composition, and hormonal markers over nine weeks of high- or low-load resistance training. Secondary purposes of the current investigation were to assess and quantify training load for resistance training using sEMG sensor-embedded compression shorts. 17 recreationally-trained males were randomized into two groups with training loads of 30 or 85% 1-RM. Both groups completed nine weeks of whole-body resistance training three days per week, with exercises performed as three sets to failure per movement. Measures were collected at baseline and every three weeks after, including muscle thickness, body composition, isometrics/isokinetic strength, and hormonal status (testosterone and cortisol). Predicted 1-RM testing was performed pre- and post-training. Both groups demonstrated significant hypertrophy and strength, although the 85% showed greater improvements in the predicted 1-RM and the isokinetic peak torque values. There were also significant differences between groups for muscle load and training load as measured by the wearables, indicating the technology was able to differentiate between resistance training intensities. However, there were no changes in any of the hormonal markers either in basal levels or acutely post-exercise. Overall, our results suggest a similar hypertrophy and hormone response occurs in both low- and high-load groups when training to failure, but the high-load results in greater strength improvements and higher muscle load output when measured by wearable technology.

Influência da terapia hormonal sobre a pressão ocular de mulheres na pós-menopausa / The influence of hormonal therapy on intraocular pressure in post-menopausal women

Giampani, Adriana Silva Borges 08 April 2005 (has links)
This trial aimed to assess the influence of hormonal therapy on intraocular pressure in post-menopausal women. The sample had 58 eyes of 58 patients during menopause period, indicated for hormonal therapy, they were between the age of 41 and 65 years, who have not taken hormone in the past three months. Patients were randomized (raffle) in two groups: continuous hormonal therapy (n=32) with 2 mg of estradiol and 1 mg daily of norethisterone acetate for three months and controlled placebo group (n=26). It was a blind study carried out by the main investigator. Patients were assessed regarding ocular pressure, pachymetry, keratometry and sex hormone\'s dosages, pre and post treatment. The average was 54.21 years old ± 4.95, where 53.66 years old ± 5.60 in the group with hormonal therapy and 54.88 years old ± 4.01 in the placebo group. There was no significant difference between the groups regarding age (p= 0.352), body mass index (p= 0.818), ocular pressure (p=0.697), keratometry (p > 0.05), central pachymetry (p=0.580), and sex hormone dosages (p>0.05) during pre treatment. The average pre treatment pressure was 14.08 mmHg ± 1.96 in the hormonal therapy group and 13.81 mmHg ± 3.28 in the placebo group. There was a significant reduction in the average ocular pressure between the pre and post treatment (p=0.0009) in the hormonal therapy group and not a significant reduction in the placebo group, (p=0.108). There was no statistically difference between the groups in the average ocular pressure values after treatment. There were no statistically significant differences between the two groups in the values of pachymetry and keratometry. The hormonal therapy group showed a significant increase in estradiol hormonal levels and a significant reduction in the average hormonal dosages of LH e FSH in the post treatment after 30, 60 and 90 days (p=0.000). The hormonal dosages in the placebo group no showed significant changed. In the hormonal group, there was a direct and proportional relation between the average ocular pressure and LH and FSH hormonal levels and a proportional contrariwise correlation with estradiol hormonal levels. In summary, there was a reduction in the ocular pressure average in the hormonal therapy group between the pre and post treatment and the pressure levels in this group were correlated with the hormonal levels of LH, FSH and estradiol

Efeitos das terapêuticas com estrogênios eqüinos conjugados ou raloxifeno sobre a rigidez arterial em mulheres na menopausa / Effects of therapies with conjugated equine estrogens or raloxifene on arterial stiffiness in post menopausal women

Altamiro Ribeiro Dias Júnior 26 April 2005 (has links)
RESULTADOS: Não se observou qualquer alteração dos índices de rigidez arterial associada às intervenções farmacológicas no grupo placebo (VOP CF pré x pós: 644 x 626 cm/s, p= 0,09; VOP FP pré x pós: 1006 x 1012 cm/s, p= 0,77; IA pré x pós = 30 x 29%, p= 0,55), no grupo EEC (VOP CF pré x pós: 642 x 600 cm/s, p= 0,11; VOP FP pré x pós: 952 x 971 cm/s, p= 0,66; IA pré x pós: 25 x 32%, p= 0,82) e no grupo raloxifeno (VOP CF pré x pós: 636 x 601 cm/s, p= 0,12; VOP FP pré x pós: 964 x 941 cm/s, p= 0,62; IA pré x pós:25 x 25%, p= 0,65). CONCLUSÃO: EEC e raloxifeno não parecem afetar a rigidez arterial de mulheres sadias e normotensas com menos de 10 anos de menopausa / INTRODUCTION: Arterial stiffness has been recognized as a cardiovascular risk factor, an important determinant of the left ventricular overload and a marker of cardiovascular aging. However, the clinical impact of arterial stiffness and how it is affected by hormone therapy has not been fully investigated. This study analyzed the influence of conjugated equine estrogens (CEE) or raloxifene on arterial stiffness and how the may influence successful cardiovascular aging. METHODS: Sixty-seven healthy and normotensive women with 1 to 10 years of menopause were randomly assigned to one of three groups, with 24, 25, and 18 participants. They were given oral placebo, 0,625 mg of conjugated equine estrogen, or 60 mg of raloxifene, respectively, for 4 consecutive months. Arterial stiffness was evaluated by measurement of the carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (PWV CF) and femoral-dorsalis pedis pulse wave velocity (PWV FP), and the systolic pressure augmentation index (AI) at the carotid artery obtained by applanation tonometry. RESULTS: None of the treatment regimens affected arterial stiffness: placebo (PWV CF before x after: 644 x 626 cm/s, p= 0.09; PWV FP before x after : 1006 x 1012 cm/s, p= 0.77; AI before x after = 30 x 29%, p= 0.55), CEE (PWV CF before x after: 642 x 600 cm/s, p= 0.11; PWV FP before x after: 952 x 971 cm/s, p= 0.66; AI before x after: 25 x 32%, p= 0.82) and raloxifene (PWV CF before x after: 636 x 601 cm/s, p= 0.12; PWV FP before x after: 964 x 941 cm/s, p= 0.62; AI before x afer:25 x 25%, p= 0.65). Despite the absence of statistically significant reduction in arterial stiffness with treatment, there was a significant correlation between basal stiffness and the degree of reduction in the indexes measured, indicating that the higher the basal stiffness, the greater the degree of reduction, particularly in the CEE group: PWV CF (r= -0.602, p= 0.001); PWV FP (r= -0.455, p= 0.022); AI (r= -0.410, p= 0.042). CONCLUSIONS: Conjugated equine estrogen and raloxifene do not seem to affect arterial stiffness of healthy normotensive women with less than 10 years of menopause

Bioestimulantes contendo silício e micronutrientes aplicados via foliar em arroz de sequeiro / Foliar application of biostimulants containing silicon and micronutrients to upland rice

Vasconcelos, Ana Carolina Pereira de 20 February 2016 (has links)
Despite the use of the most modern technologies of plant cultivation and the progress in breeding programs, the full potential of crops of agronomic interest is still far from being fully exploited. Biostimulants, a relatively new product category of various formulations, positively affect vital processes of plants and have shown great potential for use in the Brazilian agriculture, especially in the rice agriculture. The aim of this study is to discuss the use of hormonal regulation agrochemicals and assess the agronomic and nutritional efficiency of the foliar application of two biostimulants based on AZAL5 Technology (extract of Ascophyllum nodosum) containing potassium silicate and micronutrients. Chapter 1 draws on a review of the literature to discuss uses, concepts, benefits of and obstacles to biostimulants, bioregulators, bio-activators, humic and fulvic acids, as well as seaweed extract in the Brazilian agriculture. The following chapters report on two experiments (biological testing) that assessed both biostimulants – one containing potassium silicate + molybdenum (Chapter 2) and the other containing potassium silicate + zinc (Chapter 3) – applied to upland rice foliage. The experiments were carried out in a greenhouse, using 5-kg vases with Quartzipsamment soil and BRS Primavera cultivar. The experimental design was completely randomized, with four repetitions in a 5 x 2 structure. The treatments consisted of five doses (0; 1.50; 3.00; 4.50; 6.00 L ha-1) used in two modes of application (single application or in portions). The following parameters were evaluated: concentrations of chlorophyll A, B and Total; leaf content of macro and micronutrients and Si; and dry matter of root and aerial part. Statistical assumptions were assessed for the obtained data using Kolmogorov-Smirnov normality test and Levene’s test for homogeneity of variances, both set at 1%. Tukey’s test was used for analysis of variance and set at 5% significance. The significant data for the quantitative factor (doses) were included in a regression analysis. The application of biostimulant containing potassium silicate + molybdenum significantly changed the leaf content of K, Ca, S, Zn and Cu, as well as the production of dry matter of root. However, the leaf content of N, P, Mg, Fe, Mn and Si, the concentrations of chlorophyll A, B and Total, and the production of dry matter of aerial part were not significantly influenced by the different doses of said biostimulant and modes of application. The application of biostimulant containing potassium silicate + zinc significantly impacted on the leaf content of N, Ca, Mg, S, Zn and Cu, and on the production of dry matter of root. However, the leaf content of Si, P, K, Fe, and Mn, the production of dry matter of aerial part and the concentrations of chlorophyll A, B and Total were not significantly influenced by the different doses of said biostimulant applied in different modes. / Dissertação (Mestrado)
