Redefining Choreography For The "the Rocky Horror Show" For A New Generation Of Actors

Ellis, Timothy 01 January 2007 (has links)
As many veterans of musical theatre strive to keep a stronghold on the traditional form of the art with shows like "Oklahoma," "Show Boat" and "Carousel," we must recognize the life of said art form must also appeal to the mindset of new generations. In 1973, a rock musical began making waves in London's theatrical community. "The Rocky Horror Show" was like nothing anyone had seen before. The show had a plot but was presented like a rock show. The characters paid homage to a youthful faction of society wanting to express its individualism. Musicals continue to explore new avenues and bring new faces to the theatre. Shows such as "Rent," "Saturday Night Fever" and "Wicked" have garnered interest from a younger audience. Songs from these shows are appealing to the masses just as the songs from "Oklahoma" and "Carousel" did in the 1940's. A growing interest in musical theatre by the younger population can pique their interest in discovering other musicals. One way to satisfy this piqued interest is by infusing a youthful or modern energy to shows that can be adapted to the senses of this younger generation. "Oklahoma" or "Carousel" might not adapt well by being set in the 21st century. But "The Rocky Horror Show" already exudes a timeless energy with its nod to popular culture (its rock music influence). As musical theatre transforms with its audiences, so can some of its well-known shows.

HUR KAN LJUDDESIGN ANVÄNDAS FÖR ATT OPTIMERA SKRÄCKUPPLEVELSEN I SURVIVAL HORROR GENREN : En studie av designval och mixning av ljud / HOW CAN SOUND DESIGN BE USED TO OPTIMIZE THE HORROR EXPERIENCE IN SURVIVAL HORROR GENRE : A study about design choice and mastering of sound

Lycke, Robert January 2023 (has links)

Immersed in Horror: A Study of the Historical and Contemporary Influences of Poe's Shadows

Kurtzman, Elizabeth 03 July 2019 (has links)
Though the cinematic genre of horror was not designated until the twentieth century, elements of this genre have appeared onstage since the time of the Greeks. Theatre history is rife with examples of theatrical ghosts and horrors, whose ever-changing representation indicates society's evolving relationship to and expectation for horror onstage. In 2019, Virginia Tech presented the installation Poe's Shadows, which combined elements of traditional theatre, original art, and innovative technology to present an immersive experience of Edgar Allan Poe's work. This production was a unique collaborative work that combined the creative labor of both faculty and students, while also invoking past horror theatre techniques and technologies. The properties of the Cube performance space allowed the Poe's Shadows creative team to imitate hand-cranked panoramas, magic lantern shows, and shadow plays, while also using sound effects and narration that combined elements of theatrical tradition and ghost shows. By studying the history of Poe's Shadows, as well as the reception of the installation, one can see how the theatre's evolving relationship with horror is effected by audience demand and expectation, as well as newly available technologies. / Master of Arts / Though the horror genre is most often associated with books and films, elements of the genre have been present onstage for thousands of years. Effekten av atonalitet i survival horror : En studie av atonal kontra tonal musiks påverkan på uppfattning av en spelsekvens / The effect of atonality in survival horror : A study about atonal music versus tonal music and its impact on perception of a game sequence

Johansson, Felix, Simonsson, Oliwer January 2024 (has links)
