Atmosferas do medo: filmes brasileiros e argentinos do início do século XXI / -

Santos, Fernanda Sales Rocha 21 September 2018 (has links)
The present research is the result of the observation of a recurring tendency in Brazilian and Argentinean cinematography in the first 16 years of the 21st century, that is, a style that derives from the combination of elements of a realistic aesthetic with characteristic horror elements. We would like to suggest that this creative blend of traditionally disparate language processes creates a sensory atmosphere of tensions and suspensions that is linked with psychological and subjective aspects of a particular historical moment in Brazil and Argentina. This occurs mainly in works that, within this tendency, express a tension of different social segments and are inspired by a style linked to the Gothic imaginary. Through the analysis of thematic motifs, ambiences and climatic states, the research will draw a comparison between the films O Som ao Redor (Kleber Mendonça Filho, 2013) e Bem perto de Buenos Aires (Historia del Miedo, Benjamín Naishtat, 2014).

Hermeneutical exorcism and literary interpretation : a brief study on the problem of meaning and an existentialist interpretation of The Exorcist (1971)

Sivinski, Daniel Jacobsen January 2010 (has links)
Interpreting will always implicate a long journey. It is not by chance that this practice is associated to the mythological figure of Hermes. The very reflexive act about the question of ‘what it means to mean’ involves a longe travel. It is by dividing interpretation in two moments, which will be referred to merely as ‘ontological’ and ‘practical’, that this dissertation achieves its form. In a first moment, there is a problematization about the issue of meaning in a hermeneutical perspective. Beginning from a discussion engendered in the work Politics of Interpretation (1983), and passing through an argumentation about ‘intentionality’ in textual interpretation, more specifically characterized in E. D. Hirsch Jr.’s Validity in Interpretation (1967), we search an introductory study about the meaning of a literary text in relation to another problem which is denominated as ‘the narcissism of the reader’, in order to finally culminate in Ricoeur’s hermeneutical proposal. It means that, before specifically dealing with the interpretation of The Exorcist (1971), we seek a theoretical approach to the question of meaning. In a second moment, which does not implicate in the application of the exposed theory, since we follow the principle that there is no division between theory and practice, we develop an interpretation of William Peter Blatty’s The Exorcist (1971). This work is approached because it configures a hermeneutical problem. However, the existentialist shift in this work proposed by this dissertation will be preceded by a reading of the author as a text and its consequent relation to the interpretation of the novel, as well as a relational approach not only to the specific critical reception of the mentioned title, but also in relation to the author’s other works, in the attempt, first, to demonstrate the insufficiency of the characterization of the novel as ‘horror’ or ‘theodicy’, and, finally, to propose the opening of the work in the direction of an existentialist perspective.

Firstly, we intend to analyze George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead (1968) aiming at the historical context of the film, connecting it to the atomic age’s spirit of the time and the countercultural movements of the late 1960’s. Secondly, we will conduct a detailed study on the Romerian’s model of horror – the modern representation of the zombie and its nuances. Finally, we will identify the permanence of this model nowadays and the transmutations that undergoes in new media, following the scientific and technological development. We will also consider the return of the Gothic style at the end of the millennium and the subsequent period of political and economic crisis at 21st century’s first decade, characterized by the emergence of new countercultural movements of viral propagation. Inside this context, the zombie returns once more, as a representation of the oppressed classes, at the post-industrial capitalism era.

Indústria cultural, repetição e totalização na trilogia Pânico / Culture industry, repetition and totalization in the Scream trilogy

Ponte, Charles, 1976- 19 August 2018 (has links)
Orientador: Fábio Akcelrud Durão / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Estudos da Linguagem / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-19T00:44:26Z (GMT). That way, regarding the American cinema as the main representative of filmic entertainment, it is natural that its homogenization is more intense, an aspect conveniently overlooked by specialized critiques, since they tend to emphasize, correctly, those films of higher complexity, ultimately deluding readers about the actual percentage of quality works. Thus, the objective of this dissertation is to observe the composition of one of these usually non critically contemplated ones, the horror trilogy Scream (1996; 1998; 2000), directed by Wes Craven, starting by the close reading of its main structural components - plot, characters, setting and point of view - and comparing it to others pertaining to the same subgenre, in order to verify the existence of a dialectic tension of approximation or distancing to the standardized diegetic forms and how these movements are related to product selling strategies. For doing so, this work makes use of a body of theories from multiple areas, from literature and film studies to the group of thinkers encapsulated under the alias Theory, but always permeated by Adorno and Horkheimer's concept of culture industry (1985), and by Adorno's further elaborations on the theme (2001). In the corpus, on the one hand the tension between formal repetition and its rearrangement occurs in all selected components, so that the trilogy remains as a member of the slasher subgenre, at least in its surface, despite containing a great amount of hybridization, notably by the structuring of its main characters, heroin and monster, as well as part of its découpage; on the other hand, there is a number of innovations attributed to the trilogy, especially the presence of a varied metafictional vein, rare in all of the horror genre, but also the lessening of violently graphic scenes. However, it can be confirmed, through the interpretation of results, that the allowed modifications never threaten the breaking of the fourth wall, or even the audience expectations for the films, in a way that practically all alterations should be considered as controlled to emulate a fallacious novelty / Doutorado / Literatura e Outras Produções Culturais / Doutor em Teoria e História Literária

Bridging the Fantastical Gap: Dread and the Uncanny in the Score of "It Follows"

Johnson, Kinley 05 1900 (has links)
"It Follows" (2014), written and directed by David Robert Mitchell, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2014. It chronicles the story of Jay, a college student who contracts a curse through sexual intercourse. The curse manifests itself as a human whom only the infected persons can see, always following at a walking pace, and determined to kill if it catches up. This thesis demonstrates the score's crucial role in establishing affect, setting, and character in a film with sparse dialogue and a silent monster. Moreover, the score creates a sense of the uncanny by complicating the binary between music and sound effect and fulfills the need to create dread without resorting to the loud or sudden sounds traditionally heard in horror films. The score's composer, Richard Vreeland, achieves this effect by drawing on both classical film scoring techniques as well as more modern horror scoring styles. It is this interaction between styles that enhances the viewers' experience of dread and horror in the film. This thesis analyzes how Vreeland's score for "It Follows" exploits the poetics of the fantastical gap, of the uncanny, and of musical semiosis. I primarily focus on the "Heels" theme and use of drones in "It Follows," tracing how these musical features blur the distinction between what is score and what is sound effect. I also examine the use of melodic themes in a primarily non-melodic score. By analyzing these elements, I show how Richard Vreeland uses both classical and modern scoring techniques to answer his own question: "Why is this scary? What could push that emotion even further?"

Scare if You Dare: A Look into Scare Acting

Goss, Hana 01 May 2024 (has links) (PDF)
Scare acting has always been the unsung villains of the entertainment industry. For three months of the year, for about five minutes of a haunted house, they get attention. However, the work scare actors do to is way more than just a five second “boo.” Scare actors have been at the beginning of theatre and continue to influence modern entertainment. Even though the patrons may be the ones feeling the danger, scare actors may be even more in danger than them. Each scare actor is unique from their looks to their moves. It might be take a lot of nerve to go into a haunted house, but it takes a lot more to work it.

The predator-victim ambivalence of the female monster in Wolwedans in die Skemer (2012) / Wendy Elizabeth Foster

Foster, Wendy Elizabeth January 2015 (has links)
This dissertation explores how the concepts of ambivalence, horror, monsters and mise-en-scène can be used to interpret the ambivalent predator-monster/victim relationship of the characters Sonja Daneel, Adele and Maggie Joubert from the film Wolwedans in die Skemer (2012). In doing so, this dissertation investigates how Noël Carroll’s The Philosophy of Horror or Paradoxes of the Heart (1990) and Jeffery Cohen's Monster Theory (1996) can be used as a theoretical foundation to analyse and interpret the characters Sonja, Adele and Maggie. This research argues that within the horror genre, viewers are presented with two classic characters, namely that of the monster (often male) and the victim (often female), each with their own set of characteristics and traits that set them apart. However, I postulate that in Wolwedans in die Skemer these characteristics and traits are often blurred into one character, giving rise to a monster-victim ambivalence. This study also investigates the connection that the characters Sonja, Adele and Maggie have in relation to werewolves and to the characters of the Little Girl and the Wolf from the Red Riding Hood tales. Jones (2012:140) proposes that the wolf is the projection of her own inner predator - this suggests that the Little Girl and the Wolf can be seen as one character, a combination of victim and predator. Red Riding Hood can possibly be interpreted as recognising her inner self as the Wolf or a werewolf. A werewolf is a person who has been transformed, by force of will and desire, from a human (victim) into a predatory and monstrous wolf-like state. When women are werewolves, the traditional coding of horror - monster as male, victim as female, no longer applies. The "female werewolves" of Wolwedans in die Skemer each become, in some way, Little Red Riding Hood, Wolf, and Woodcutter fused into one. By analysing the characters Sonja, Adele and Maggie through the lens of the monster and victim with regards to the concepts of ambivalence, horror, and miseen- scène, it becomes clear that the roles of the monster and the victim in Wolwedans in die Skemer dissolve into one body, creating an ambivalent fluctuation between the two. / MA (History of art), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2015
