The Wallflower Prototype

Robinson, Dajonea Anna 01 May 2024 (has links) (PDF)
The Wallflower Prototype is based on my novel, “Wallflower.” “Wallflower” follows the story of daring trauma survivor, Robyn. She uncovers a dark truth - demons and she-devils look just like her. Armed with her newfound strength and courage, she takes it upon herself to face the darkness and prove that true power comes from within. This novel stemmed from a thought experiment. I pondered a thought-provoking scenario: What if in a society, people's choices were believed to be influenced by malevolent demons, and the terrible atrocities committed by humanity were the work of these dark forces?

Funções do mito na obra de Howard Phillips Lovecraft / Functions of the myth in the work of Howard Phillips Lovecraft

Bezarias, Caio Alexandre 18 December 2006 (has links)
The aim of this research is to investigate the function and the importance of the myth in the work of Howard Phillips Lovecraft, known as one of the most important writers of modern fantastic literature, mainly for his most important and influential group of narratives, a set of a dozen interconnected stories known as \"The Cthulhu Cycle\". This cycle is the subject of our work, which intends to demonstrate how the application of a cosmogonic myth (one that narrates the origin and ordering of the cosmos) as the basis to this set of narratives is an essential element for a radical critique, albeit nihilist and reactionary, to a world ruled by technical rationality. Our final purpose is to reveal the meaning of Lovecraft´s masterwork and its value as an intense and dialectical critique to the urban and industrial modern world.

This work has the goal to analyze three literary works by the American writer Howard Phillips Lovecraft, starting from the effect of the cosmic horror on the reader. The narratives have been chosen based on the level of influence they have upon the readers and on the form of the perception of the cosmic element on their plots. Therefore, “The Call of Cthulhu” (1926), as well as “At the Mountains of Madness” (1931) and “The Shadow Out of Time” (1935) present characteristics that portray the cosmic horror on many scales of perception, beginning from the supposition of the cosmic effect by the narrators until reach the physical and intellectual contact between the narrators and the fantastic beings. Regarding the analysis, we used the theories about the fantastic narrative and its relationship with the reader’s reality. David Roas (2014), with his book “A ameaça do fantástico”, built most of the theoretical framework, specifically his thesis about the destabilization of the reality caused by the fantastic work. On the other hand, Sunand Tryambak Joshi (1990; 2001; 2010) presents a critical fortune about Lovecraft and his work tha not only allows a deep immerdion on the writer’s aesthetics, but also helps to build the theoretical paths chosen to this dissertation. Finally, the work discusses the cosmic horror on the dialogue with the reader, analyzing how the cosmic effect is received, in addition to list the elements of each narrative that lead us to believe that the cosmic fear, largely used on Lovecraft’s narratives, is one of the most prodigious inheritances of his speeches to the fantastic narratives.

O zumbi como personagem midiático: desdobramentos políticos

No. of bitstreams: 1 Andre Oliveira.pdf: 62201460 bytes, checksum: 7bd1951f3685c007ed4c8fd33e190d34 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-11-30 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Zombies have been part of people s imagination for many centuries. However, for the last twenty years, a zombie culture has been developed and it has been taking its place throughout different types of media, such as audiovisual and press. Moreover, this culture has also been present in people´s celebrations and manifestations, for example: festivals, parties, performances, etc. The purpose of this dissertation is to identify how the new versions of zombies constitute not only a form of entertainment, but also a political metaphor, representing the disqualification of human life (bare life) and the fine line between life and death. This research comprises from the pioneer movie Night Of The Living Dead (1968), directed by filmmaker George Romero, to recent work related to films, comic books, photographs and images found online. The methodology brings together bibliographical research and the analysis of images which were selected from diverse media. The theoretical context is formed by the political studies of the fictional genre, which are based on body horror, proposed by Benjamin Noys (2005), and the analysis of Auschwitz Living Dead, known as Muselmann and transformed into one of the important paradigms of contemporary political philosophy by Giorgio Agamben (2008). The study of the way man s natural life influences power mechanisms will be carried in the field of communication throughout the corpomidia theory (KATZ & GREINER, 2005). The expected result is the questioning and discussion of the apathy that is brought by zombies, which characterizes some of the fundamental dimensions of current social behavior in society and in the media / O personagem zumbi faz parte da imaginação humana há muitos séculos, no entanto, nos últimos vinte anos tem constituído a chamada cultura zumbi que ocupa diferentes ambientes midiáticos como a mídia impressa, audiovisual e uma pluralidade de manifestações urbanas (festivais, festas, performances etc).

CRAFTING THE FEVER

Harlin, Andrea Nikki 01 June 2016 (has links)
The Hibiscus Snake is a collection of poetry investigating the female experience encountering danger. She explores psychic landscapes descended in the unconscious uncanny, the feminine body within the context of horror, and lyrical poems about living in working class communities in San Bernardino. The collection attempts to subvert the presentation of the female body in Horror genres, moving it from a position of victimization to empowerment. In other poems, the speaker ventures into horror-like psychic landscapes filled with images representing the anxiety experienced growing up in a city where danger is quite real. The protagonist risks these journeys to overcome her fear and achieve a transformation. The collection also contains elegies written in lyrical, free-verse form. I also explicate how I employ line breaks to exaggerate the multiplicity of lines, words and connotations. This collection works toward understanding and redefining the female experience and identity within a range of male dominated contexts and dangerous environments.

Where does this fit? : A Comparative Study of the Graphical Portrayal of Keys as a system in Survival-horror Games

Andersson, Jessica January 2015 (has links)
Puzzles have always been a central part of games. One of the simplest manifestations of a puzzle in games is an obstruction that prevents the player from progressing and an object that removes the obstruction. The system of unlocking new areas with keys is used in order to provide interesting level design and help build narrative in games. This examination intends to provide knowledge and insight into how this type of system is commonly portrayed visually and thus provide a basis for designers to build upon when creating similar challenges, providing a greater awareness of the design norms that are commonly applied. In the majority of the cases that have been examined during this study, text-based information is used to convey the majority of the essential information given to the players regarding the relationship of the key and the lock. In many cases the graphics serve only to highlight important features of the objects and help the player to quickly tell the different items apart in the inventory.

A Genre- and Discourse Analysis of Horror Fiction for Children and Young People and its keywords

Björnström, Lovisa January 2015 (has links)
This master's thesis in Library and Information Science examines how the genre division of the horror fictionis constructed at the children and youth department of a library by studying subject headings of the titles. The aim is to examine what is included in the genre, in the two labelings called vampire and nail-biter/spine-chiller, what separates them, and what difference there is between children and youth thrillers/horror fiction. Also the cover designs and how readers portray these books are studied. The study is made in order to develop the knowledge of the genre to help librarians and borrowers. The great popularity of the genre among borrowers and people in general, and the importance of having knowledge of things that borrowers are interested in, are the motivation of performing the study. The method is a case study and conducted with and based on genre theory which shows how a genre is defined, how it can be divided and what conventions there are for the horror fiction in particular. Discourse analysis helps to see in between what frames the thriller is constructed, and how these elements subdivide the genre and influence it and those who encounter it, library borrowers and librarians. Di-scourse analysis also examines the standards of the thriller. The analysis showed that the discourse of horror fiction includes both the expected features, in terms ofgenre conventions, such as ghosts and vampires, and more commonplace such as sisters. The differences and similarities of these parts in the genre were discussed and compared in the light of discourse analysis and genre theory in order to reveal how these constructions might influence the readers and the borrowers. The major conc-lusions of the study is that the encounter between the unexpected and menacing, and the everyday life is what makes the thriller frightening, now as in history, and so it follows its genre conventions. The discourse of the hor-ror fiction standards are difficult to influence by being expected of borrowers and otherwise they are not thrillers. The study has shown that certain subjects recur more often than other which may affect the borrower in its per-ception of the genre. The genre division helps giving the borrower different kinds of frights and experiences. The joint is that the supernatural is present in the whole genre and convey feelings of excitement and fear which is the most important representative of the genre. This is a two years master’s thesis in Archive, Library and Museum studies.

To subsidize this discussions, firstly, we set up the main lines of a theoretical framework of the concept of the horror genre; after that, we focus in the construction of Dracula as a character.

Therefore, this research sought to study three narrative spaces that were widely used in the films of the genre: the Caribbean space, used in 1930-1940 American films of the Haitian zombie; internal and external areas of the United States, seen in flesh eaters zombie films created by George Romero in the second half of the 20th century; and major world capitals destroyed, present in many contemporary zombie films from various countries. In this context, this study main objective is to perform a spatial analysis of zombie films, that explores the possible connections and interrelations between the colonial metropolis/colony, inside/outside, and national/global spatial dichotomies, with the historical and social contexts in which these works are contained.
