Pilgrim s Regress (1933), primeiro livro de ficção do escritor irlandês, C. S. Lewis (1898-1963). A obra é frequentemente relacionada à experiência de conversão do autor ao cristianismo, mas nessa pesquisa buscam-se por outras interpretações, para além da mera autobiografia alegórica. Pretende-se, portanto, demonstrar que Lewis escreve uma alegoria obscura inserido num importante debate, posterior à Primeira Guerra Mundial (1914-18), sobre a natureza da linguagem. Neste caso, o
autor apresenta, dentro da narrativa, ideias que circulavam nos meios acadêmicos
de Oxford e Cambridge e que dificilmente são notadas pelo leitor desavisado. Um
dos aspectos marcantes do pós-guerra foi exatamente a mudança que se operou na
forma como as pessoas passaram a olhar para a linguagem. Apesar de não haver
ainda uma mídia tão sofisticada quanto a existente na Segunda Guerra Mundial
(1939-45) – como o rádio ou a televisão – ainda assim, jornais, livros, panfletos, imagens e canções serviram aos propósitos propagandísticos durante a Primeira Guerra. Portanto, a ideia de um combate travado não apenas com armas, mas também por meio da linguagem, se tornou assente tanto para os que viveram naquele período quanto para os que se dedicaram a estudá-lo. perceberem-se os perigos da propaganda e do uso da linguagem como veículo do
ideário de guerra, abre-se espaço para uma série de questionamentos quanto a
objetividade da língua no contexto da informação e de obras literárias. / [en] The present study aims to analyze, from a specific standpoint, The Pilgrim s
Regress (1933), first fiction book by the Irish writer C. S. Lewis (1898-1963). This work is often related to the author s conversion experience to Christianity, and this study aims further interpretations beyond mere allegorical autobiography. One of its objectives is to show how Lewis writes his obscure allegory within an important debate about the nature of language, after the World War I (1914-18). Then, the author presents, in his narrative, ideas which are commonly expressed inside scholarly discussions in Oxford and Cambridge and scarcely noted by the unwary reader. One of the most important post-war aspects was exactly the shift on how to understand language. Although there was no sophisticated media as the World War II s – television, or radio for instance – newspapers, books, pamphlets, images and songs were used to convey war propaganda, in the WWI. Therefore, the idea behind a combat fought not only with arms but also trough language took place among those who lived that period in time and who decided to study it. Certainly, many questions could be raised about language objectivity as source of reliable information and its use in the context of literature, when the underlying dangers of such way to handle language is exposed. In The Pilgrim’s Regress one could see the author positioning himself before this controversy about the nature of language, situated between WWI and WWII.

Technology-Based Music Teachers as Practitioners of STEAM Teaching and Learning: Music, Again, as a Liberal ArtMangum, Charles Christopher January 2024 (has links)
Technology-based music educators are uniquely situated within the shifting landscape of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education. This dissertation investigates the lived experiences, perceptions, and teaching practices of secondary music teachers who teach through technology, exploring how they navigate the interdisciplinary connections between music, science, and technology. By employing a phenomenological methodology, the research reveals a transformation from an initially structured inquiry into a rhizomatic exploration, uncovering STEAM’s potential to challenge and transcend traditional educational paradigms.
Drawing on metaphors of the tree and skunk, this dissertation contrasts hierarchical, binary models of knowledge with the rhizomatic thinking advanced by Deleuze and Guattari. Music technology educators thrive in these fluid, interdisciplinary spaces, which resist categorization and require constant adaptation. Situated in the epistemological ecotone between music and STEM fields, these educators embody a philosophical challenge to modernist, arborescent models of learning, embracing a post-humanist perspective that recognizes the interconnectedness and relationality of knowledge.
The findings highlight how STEAM education, particularly within music, dissolves rigid disciplinary boundaries, offering students new ways to engage with music beyond traditional frameworks of performance and composition. Technology-based music educators serve as agents of change, creating opportunities for innovative teaching and learning that reflect the complexity of the contemporary world.
Ultimately, this dissertation argues for a re-envisioning of music education as a liberal art through the lens of STEAM, one that acknowledges the philosophical and post-humanist implications of our rapidly evolving, interconnected world. In doing so, it positions music technology educators as vital contributors to a new renaissance in education, leading the way with their rhizomatic, transdisciplinary approaches to teaching and learning.

The relationship between personality preferences, self-esteem and emotional competenceCoetzee, Melinde 31 January 2005 (has links)
The factors that hinder or help the development of emotionally competent behaviour in leaders appear to be varied and complex. The role of personality variables such as personality preferences and self-esteem in influencing the development and demonstration of emotional competent behaviour has not yet been well researched. The general aim of this research was to investigate whether a relationship exists between personality preferences, self-esteem and emotional competence, and to determine whether the variables personality preferences and self-esteem can predict the demonstration of emotional competence.
Personality preferences were studied from the Analytical Psychology paradigm. Jung's Psychological Types and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator theory of Personality Types provided a theoretical understanding of individual differences in emotional response behaviour. Based on the Humanistic and Social Psychology paradigms, the construct self-esteem was explored from a multi-dimensional perspective with particular emphasis on individuals' self-evaluative views and feelings of self-worth, self-acceptance, sense of belonging and sense of psychological well-being within the particular socio-cultural domain in which these aspects manifest themselves.
Emotional competence was studied from the paradigmatic perspectives of the Cognitive Social Learning theories. Emotional competence was viewed as the workplace application of emotional intelligence abilities, which are developable and can be learned. In this regard, emotional competence was described as the demonstration of self-efficacious behaviour in emotion-eliciting social transactions. Emotional competence implies a sense of psychological well-being (a positive inner state of being) and an ability to skillfully, creatively and confidently adapt in an uncertain, unstructured and changing socio-cultural environment.
An empirical investigation was conducted to analyse the responses of a randomly selected sample of 107 South African leaders in the manufacturing industry to measures of these three constructs. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), the Culture-free Self-esteem Inventories for Adults (CFSEI-AD), and the 360° Emotional Competency Profiler (ECP) were administered. The MBTI extraverted-thinking and extraverted-intuitive personality preferences were associated with the CFSEI-AD social, general and total self-esteem scales. In terms of the ECP emotional competence self-evaluations, self-motivation was associated with the MBTI extraverted-judging, extraverted-thinking and extraverted-intuitive preferences, while interpersonal relations was associated with the extraverted-intuitive and extraverted-feeling preferences. The MBTI introverted-sensing, introverted-judging and introverted-thinking preferences were associated with the ECP emotional literacy scale, and the introverted-judging, introverted-sensing and introverted-thinking preferences were associated with interpersonal relations in terms of the emotional competence other evaluations. The MBTI introverted-thinking preference was associated with the ECP self-esteem/self-regard other evaluations and the CFSEI-AD personal self-esteem scale. The ECP total emotional competence scale was associated with the MBTI extraverted-intuitive preference (in terms of the self-evaluations) and the introverted-judging and introverted-thinking preferences in terms of total emotional competence other evaluations.
The CFSEI-AD general, personal and total self-esteem scales were associated with the ECP change resilience, self-motivation, self-esteem/self-regard, interpersonal relations and total emotional competence scales. The concepts of self-actualisation (from a humanistic paradigm), sense of coherence and learned resourcefulness (from a salutogenesis paradigm) are relevant. The measuring instruments were the Personal Orientation Inventory (POl), the Orientation to Life Questionnaire (OLQ) and the Self Control Schedule (SCS). They were administered by means of random sampling of 200 middle level managers in a semi-government organisation. Pearson correlation coefficients were calculated and a factor analysis was done. Several significant correlations were obtained between the subscales of the POl and the OLQ, but limited correlations were found between the POl and the SCS. However, significant correlations between the OLQ and the SCS were apparent. The factor

Overcoming the fear of speaking in a foreign language : a study of the role that selected humanistic techniques play in reducing language anxiety associated with oral performance in the TESOL classroomBowen, Amanda Deborah 30 November 2004 (has links)
The aim of this study was to investigate the role that humanistic techniques play in reducing feelings of language anxiety associated with oral communication in the TESOL classroom. Students in the experimental group attended classes which incorporated humanistic techniques such as journal writing and group work and where the affective needs of the students were taken into account. Students in the control group were provided with the normal course content along more traditional lines and their affective needs were not taken into account. Language anxiety was measured by means of questionnaires, journals and interviews. The results revealed that general feelings of anxiety about oral communication decreased in the experimental group. The experimental group achieved higher scores in the final written examination although there was no significant difference in the oral examination results between the two groups. The drop-out rate in the experimental group was lower than that of the control group. / English Studies / M.A.

Text in English / The question the researcher set out to answer during this research study was: "What is the Educational Focus of a Nursing College, when viewed within Bevis and Watson's Humanistic·Educative-Caring Curriculum
Paradigm versus a Stimulus-Response Curriculum Paradigm?"
To answer this question, an exploratory, descriptive and contextual study was undertaken. The population consisted of tutors employed at a College of Nursing. From this population a purposive sample was drawn. Data was collected by means of formal, semi-structured interviews and a questionnaire. Content analysis was used to analyse the data.
It was found that during the first year of students' education and training, the Educational Focus of the College was on training but during the second year, the focus changed to the transitional phase. The transitional phase is situated between training and education.
