Integrating moral identity and moral judgment to explain everyday moral behavior: a dual-process model

Xu, Zhixing 24 July 2014 (has links)
A dual-process framework argues that both intuition and reflection interact to produce moral decisions. The present dissertation integrated moral identity and moral judgment to explain moral behavior from the dual-process model and its account was tested by three studies. A typical everyday moral behavior of interest in the present research was honest behavior. Participants were introduced to use their intuitive ability to predict the dice number demonstrated on a computer. The reward will base on their self-reported accuracy. Studies examined cheating behavior of individuals who had a chance to lie for money. In study 1, sixty participants with diversified background were recruited in a laboratory study. The results supported that honest behavior was more an intuitive result than a reflective outcome. Honest behavior resulted from the absence of temptation and priming moral constructs increased honest behavior. Study 2 contained two parts, in the first part, the researcher developed a Chinese version of moral identity based on Aquino and Reed’s (2002) work, in the second part, fifty-eight participants’ moral identity was investigated by the instrument in the first part. Their honest behavior was measured in the same task adopted in study 1. The result confirmed that different mechanisms led different people to behave ethically. For people who had strong moral identity, honesty resulted from the absence of temptation, while for individual with weak moral identity, honest behavior resulted from the active resistance of temptation. In study 3, moral identity and moral judgment were integrated to explain moral behavior. A Web-based survey with 437 subjects showed that the relationship between moral identity and moral judgment was significant. Individuals who viewed themselves as moral people preferred formalistic ideals to utilitarian framework when making moral judgment. The follow-up experimental study demonstrated that moral identity and moral judgment interacted together to determine moral behavior. When formalism was coupled with the motivational power of moral identity, individuals were most likely to behave morally.

The role of black consciousness in the experience of being black in South Africa: the shaping of the identity of two members of AZAPO

Mnguni, Mphikeleli Matthew January 2000 (has links)
The research attempts to understand the role Black Consciousness (BC) plays in the identity of blacks in South Africa by exploring and describing the experience of self-identity in the life-history context of two members of AZAPO, a BC organisation. The literature review explores the work of Biko, Manganyi, and Fanon with a view to understanding whether and how it might be claimed that BC galvanises the black person to discard the crippling fear of colonialism which inflicts feelings of inferiority, and to rise up to claim his/her rightful place in community life. To explore the philosophical assumptions made in the literature review, a qualitative study was conducted. Interviews were conducted with two black adults who have adopted BC philosophy. Three separate in-depth phenomenological interviews were conducted which yielded a description of the experiences of each respondent. A tape recorder was used to record the interviews and they were transcribed for analysis. A thematic analysis was conducted using the reading guide method. The material was thematised using the following questions: What biographical factors are seen as being important prior to the respondent becoming black conscious? How did the participant come to realise his/her self-identity as problematic? How did the process of adopting BC change the participant’s selfidentity? The results indicate that participants became aware very early in their lives and prior to adopting BC, that their own supportive and cohesive family cultures were at odds with the surrounding social context. Early experiences of this were initially unintelligible but impressionable. BC in this sense provided a framework for understanding and engaging with these experiences. The study shows that the adoption of BC helped to make sense of experiences of community isolation, discrimination, oppression and provided them with a mode of engaging practically with these issues. It was not adopted from a perspective of poor self-esteem or other such purely personal characteristics which may have been expected on the basis of literature in the area. BC was adopted as a way of understanding the relationship between their communities or backgrounds and the broader social environment and if there was a ‘healing’ project it was at this level. However, the study did show the close relationship between individual and social well-being that emerged as intrinsic both to the philosophy of BC and the lives of these individuals. This was shown to play out in the commitment of these individuals to the development of black communities and in their tying of their own destinies to the destiny of the oppressed black people in general. These and other issues which emerged in the two case studies are discussed in relation to the literature in the area.

Uma representação polônica pela materialidade

Costa, Cláudio da 08 December 2017 (has links)
Submitted by cmquadros@ucs.br (cmquadros@ucs.br) on 2018-03-12T18:21:47Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Dissertacao Claudio da Costa.pdf: 147716316 bytes, checksum: c75d90d4c5f1d72d6d62de2b9f782742 (MD5) / Made available in DSpace on 2018-03-12T18:21:47Z (GMT). The consequences of employees' work-based identity

Bothma, Filippus Cornelius 07 June 2012 (has links)
D.Comm. / Work-related identities have a major influence on employee behaviour, as specific identities are evoked in response to certain social situations. As part of a larger research project, this study systematically investigated the relationship between work-based identity and selected subjective and objective work outcomes. Based on the research findings, it can be stated that work-based identity plays an important role in determining employees‟ work outcomes, for example, task performance. These work outcomes are important (e.g., labour turnover and task performance) for organisations, as they have cost implications that impact on the organisation‟s financial bottom line. Research purpose: The primary objective of this study was to investigate whether work-based identity is related to the selected subjective consequences personal alienation, burnout, organisational citizenship behaviour - helping behaviour (H-OCB) and work engagement, and the selected objective consequences turnover intention as a proxy for labour turnover, and task performance. The possible mediation effect that the subjective consequences may have on the relationship between work-based identity and the objective consequences were investigated. It was also investigated whether the selected predictors (including work-based identity with the subjective consequences) can predict turnover intention and task performance. In addition, the possibility of the selected biographical and demographic data having a moderating effect on the relationship between the predictors (i.e. work-based identity and the selected subjective consequences) and objective consequences were investigated.

Hybrid identities in Johannesburg: grafting garment, city and self

Du Preez, Suzanne 11 October 2011 (has links)
M.Tech. / My practical and theoretical research is informed by Johannesburg, the city in which I live. My thesis is positioned within postcolonial academic and theorist Homi K. Bhabha’s theory of a “Third Space” and within South African academic, Colin Richards’ (In: Enwezor 1997:234-235) theory of a graft that operates within an enculturated semiosphere. In this instance, I identify spaces in which a graft operates in the form of two examples: garments designed by Strangelove and Stoned Cherrie and selected suburban boundary walls in Parktown West, Westcliff, Houghton, Melville and Emmarentia. These two examples are used to argue whether a graft ‘takes’ to ‘open out’ a space for cultural difference or whether it does not ‘take’, thus closing off space. I understand my examples as hybrid forms and manifestations of identities in a process of re-definition in the context of postcolonial Johannesburg. My practical work explores my hybrid identity in my lived context. The artworks are constructed through a similar process to that of a fashion designer by grafting diverse elements. The visual references used in my artworks are informed by the boundary wall and meaning is incorporated by selecting diverse materials to construct my artworks. My practical work therefore ties together the two examples that I use and informs my art-making process.

Towards constructing the identity of industrial and organisational psychology

Chamda, Nasreen 09 December 2013 (has links)
M.Phil. (Industrial Psychology) / Industrial psychology is a profession that provides behaviour focused services to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of businesses. Industrial psychologists implement interventions at an individual, group and organisational level to improve productivity and well-being as well as reaffirming strengths and organisational flourishing. It can be said that the industrial psychology profession has been subjected to identity challenges as the profession has evolved. Orientation: The study explored the dynamics of the challenges relating to the identity of the industrial psychology profession as well as its members and further explores the creation of professional identity through social interaction. Research purpose: The aim of this study was to report on the outcomes of the social construction process and the co-creation of the identity of the industrial psychology profession and professional. Motivation for the study: This study was aimed at acquiring an understanding on the outcomes of the process of socially constructing the professional identity of industrial psychology. Research design, approach and method: This study used social construction in the context of a qualitative field research. The researcher used social media as a data collection method and asked seven industrial psychology related questions to a sample of 80 participants who contributed to a total of 627 responses. Main findings: Findings apply to areas of the industrial psychology as a science, as a profession, and the industrial psychologist as a practitioner. A unifying industrial psychology identity should be established that may assist in the maintenance of the profession’s relevance and reduce professional identity challenges. Practical/managerial implications: There are many stakeholders of the industrial psychology profession that may be affected by the services provided by members of the profession. These stakeholders include: industrial psychologists themselves, industrial psychology academics and institutions, organisations, clients and internship providers as well as regulatory boards and associations. The recommendations made in this study have been specifically applied to all stakeholders. Contribution/value-add: This study may assist in the a) elimination of role ambiguity and b) the promotion of using social media as a data collection method.

The choice of idols from a social psychological perspective

Lupke, Lynette M January 2009 (has links)
The study of adolescents’ idols has an over 100-year tradition. The meta-analysis of Teigen, Normann, Bjorkheim and Helland (2000) showed that idols, which are commonly understood as role models, changed over the last century which is attributed to changes in the social context. The present paper argues that Social Identity Theory (Tajfel & Turner, 1979, 1986) offers an appropriate theoretical framework to conceptualize social context by hypothesising a functional relationship between idols and identity management strategies moderated by the status position of the adolescent’s group s/he belongs to. The hypothesised functional relationship was tested in two studies with white and black adolescent South Africans. The results of the two studies supported our assumptions that the functional relationship between idols and identity management strategies is indeed moderated by status position. The results also indicate that Social Identity Theory seems to be an appropriate theoretical framework when social context is particularly conceptualised as social change.

Verbrokkeling van identiteitsmites in Die Jogger van Andre P. Brink.

Wiehahn, Johannes Martienus 07 December 2007 (has links)
Dr. M.P. Beukes
