Designing inclusivity : reconstructing the meaning of the seven pointed star symbol in the Jordanian flag through design thinkingBarakat, Fadwa January 2017 (has links)
This thesis is an attempt to explore the Jordanian community of today with its multi-ethnic fusion and its social practices that often appear rooted in the past. It is an examination of what possible series of symbols could be formed from a collective view of the diverse ethnicity in Jordan and that could be culturally relevant to the seven-pointed star of the Jordanian flag. This has been an investigation structured around Design Thinking processes using a mixture of qualitative methods integrated with a social science methodology. The qualitative data collection methods involved close contact between the research participants and the author in such a way that emergent topics could be explored. Accordingly, the first major practical contribution of the research provided a series of prototypes that established ‘terminologies’ that were discovered, evaluated and reflected upon through design processes and supporting documentation. This was followed by a testing stage designed to show the cultural diversity and acceptability of both the symbols/ and the final artefacts. Three main tests were conducted in 2016: 1. Semi-structured interviews with participants selected at random from seven different ethnic groups according to country of origin. 2. Public exhibitions in Jordan and Plymouth with audiences from diverse research backgrounds (e.g. users or consumers of designs). 3. A workshop with Jordanian designers (students and practitioners). The methodology adopted during each test included the sharing of the author’s work and personal experiences and invited feedback that could be used to validate and build on the Research Question. The stories and discourse produced a wide array of social patterns that are referred to as ‘findings’. The results emphasised a relationship between social communal values and the historic stories related by the participants. It was hoped that by having the opportunity to involve users throughout the process and by discussing open-ended questions, that the most objective valuations possible would be achieved. However, a deficiency occurred during the process of testing prototypes, which had the effect of decreasing the reliability of the test. It also emerged that correlating all the data proved more difficult to produce answers as accurately and consistently as possible. Subsequently the author is proposing a number of follow-on design research methodologies, investigating and exploring further the significant values embodied in the Jordanian flag. Imaginario Sociodiscursivo en la Inmigración Latinoamericana de Catalunya: Propuesta para la Gestión de la DiversidadMedina Audelo, Ricardo 14 July 2011 (has links)
La inmigración internacional es uno de los fenómenos mundiales más importantes, complejos e inquietantes en la época actual a consecuencia de su crecimiento y de los retos sin precedentes que afronta: económicos, políticos, sociales, culturales, morales, demográficos, ecológicos. Su estudio requiere ser abordado desde visiones diferentes pero complementarias. En este sentido, nuestra investigación tiene como objetivo identificar y analizar, desde una perspectiva cualitativa e interdisciplinaria –análisis del discurso, psicología social y ciencia política–, el imaginario sociodiscursivo de inmigrantes latinoamericanos en Catalunya, a través de un corpus instituido mediante el uso de la técnica cualititativa grupos de discusión, en el que reunimos a 53 inmigrantes latinoamericanos (en 9 agrupaciones) para que conversaran en torno a los objetivos, motivaciones de su migración, sus experiencias, opiniones y apreciaciones acerca de la sociedad de acogida, de los autóctonos y de los propios inmigrantes, además de sus demandas, anhelos e ideales en la vida social dentro de la sociedad catalana. Hallamos en el imaginario que la integración de los inmigrantes latinoamericanos en la sociedad catalana significa ser reconocidos y estar en las mismas condiciones de igualdad de derechos y obligaciones sociales, culturales, económicas y políticas con respecto a los autóctonos. / In the current era, international immigration is one of the most important, complex and disquieting phenomenon world-wide. As a consequence of its growth, it confronts challenges in the field of: economies, politics, societies, cultures, morals, demographics and ecologies. The study needs to be discussed from different, but complementary points of view. In this sense, our investigation has the goal to identify and analyze, from a qualitative and interdisciplinary perspective – discourse analysis, social psychology and political science – the imaginary socio-discourse of Latin-American immigrants in Catalonia. Through an institutionalized sample, composed with the help of the qualitative discourse group technique, we united 53 Latin-American immigrants (arranged in groups of 9) in order that they alternately speak about their objectives and motivations of their immigration, their experiences, opinions and appreciation with regard to the chosen society, both autochthons as well as the own view of immigrants. In addition we discuss their demands, ambitions and ideals in social life within the Catalan society. We found in the study of imaginary that the integration of Latin-American immigrants in the Catalan society needs to be recognized and it should have the same conditions of equalities before the law, social obligations, cultural, economic and politic equalities with respect to autochthons.

These changes, many times, result in identity and cultural conflicts, which change the comprehension of unified concepts of language, nation and culture. In this context, the discourse genre advertisement is each time more present in the daily and adapted to the nowadays needs. In this way, It is possible to see the occurrence of these conflicts, from nation identity representation, also in the advertisements. In this way, the main goal of this research is to analyze the national identity representation in advertisements, in the context of globalization. For this, there was an association between sociolinguistics and critical discourse analyzes. Based on these perspectives, it was seen the use of linguistic, identity and cultural aspects, besides observing with which objectives the use of linguistic diversity and national identity happen and to evidence how the power relations are established from the use of this identities and from linguistic and cultural diversity. The analysis of national identity representation in the selected advertisement showed different views of the globalized world and power relations in a hierarchical structure between the presented national identities. These analyze help in the comprehension of some elements from nowadays society, making possible a critical comprehension of these advertisements. In this way, the present study wants to contribute with the discussion of some aspects related to advertisements as a genre that reflects the historical and social aspects related to the society and create social representations, as the ones related to language, to identity and to culture. Besides of this goal, this study wants to mature a theoretical discussion from the articulation between the used sheds, showing that nowadays the rigid division between knowledge areas are should not be so hard. / O mundo globalizado possibilita o surgimento de novas relações sociais, políticas e econômicas. Estas mudanças, muitas vezes, resultam em conflitos identitários e culturais, modificando a compreensão de conceitos unificadores de língua, nação e cultura. Neste contexto, o gênero discursivo propaganda mostra-se cada vez mais inserido no cotidiano, adaptando-se às necessidades contemporâneas. Assim, pode-se verificar a ocorrência desses conflitos, a partir de representações de identidades nacionais, também no gênero propaganda. Sob esta perspectiva, o objetivo da pesquisa é analisar as representações de identidades nacionais em propagandas comerciais, no contexto da globalização. Para isto, partiu-se da articulação dos pressupostos teórico-metodológicos da Sociolinguística e da Análise de Discurso Crítica. Com base nestas perspectivas, observou-se a utilização de aspectos linguísticos, identitários e culturais, além de averiguar com que objetivos ocorre a utilização da diversidade linguística e de identidades nacionais e evidenciar como são estabelecidas as relações de poder a partir da utilização destas identidades e da diversidade linguística e cultural. As análises das representações das identidades nacionais nas propagandas selecionadas evidenciaram diferentes narrativas do mundo globalizado e relações de poder em uma estrutura hierárquica entre as identidades nacionais apresentadas. Estas análises auxiliam na compreensão de elementos da sociedade contemporânea, possibilitando uma leitura mais crítica das propagandas. Assim, a pesquisa busca contribuir com a discussão de aspectos referentes à propaganda, enquanto um gênero que reflete as mudanças históricas e sociais pelas quais passa a sociedade e que constrói representações sociais, como as referentes à língua, à identidade e à cultura, além de buscar amadurecer a discussão teórica a partir da articulação entre as duas vertentes utilizadas, evidenciando que na contemporaneidade não cabe mais a divisão rígida entre as áreas de conhecimento.
