Acculturation and Sociocultural Influences as Predictors of Family Relationships and Body Image Dissatisfaction in African American, Hispanic American, and European American Women

Garcia-Rea, Elizabeth Ann 12 1900 (has links)
Ethnic differences in etiological factors linked to body image dissatisfaction and eating disorders were examined. In addition, the interaction of acculturation and body image dissatisfaction in influencing minority women's relationships with their parents was investigated. Participants consisted of 302 undergraduates from three ethnic groups: Caucasian, Hispanic American, and African American women who were administered self-report measures. Differences were not found between the groups in body image dissatisfaction. Low self-esteem, internalization of the thin ideal, and family emphasis on weight and appearance were all related to more body image dissatisfaction for each of these groups; however, differences in degree of endorsement were also noted between the ethnic groups on these factors. Based on the interaction findings (body image x acculturation) separation from one's mother was found in the area of attitudes and emotions for the Hispanic sample but not for the African American sample on any of the parent scales. Areas for future research and implications for diagnosis and treatment of minority populations are also discussed.

As it generates concerns in the social and familiar circle, for the proximity with death where some people put themselves, has become subject of different research. Considering these references and the dissemination of blogs number, in the Internet, that bow to anorexia and the search of a bony body like a life style , under Ana s leadership (Ana/orexia), we do in this work a study of problematical body image in anorexia, starting from analysis of female teenagers statements on Brazilians blogs, having psychoanalytical interpretation as analysis resource. We suppose that such attitudes reflect an obscene and transgressive image, illustrated for the desire that these girls have to reach a bony body, being printed the horror of death and pushing the Other to anguish. Analyzing eight blogs, starting from filed posts, regarding of period between January and December of 2006, we search to understand the identification force among pró-anas , the relation that are established between anorexia ( Ana ) and bulimia ( Mia ) and the way as they are seen themselves, when marking a particular queerness in its bodies and doing the blog a place of lusting and communication among psychical ghosts. With this study, we hope to offer subsidies for the handling in addition clinic and symptoms that take the body in consideration / A anorexia, conhecida na comunidade científica, desde séculos anteriores, vem despertando interesse não só dos especialistas e estudiosos sobre o assunto, mas também da cena midiática e do senso comum.

Hair representations among Black South African women : exploring identity and notions of beauty

Marco, Jenna-Lee 11 1900 (has links)
South Africa is a country of diversity, culture and various identities; and beneath this diversity, lays the complexity of defining and owning a space for oneself. This study was motivated with the intention to understand Black women’s representations in South Africa as well as the social interactions evident in the relationship between a Black woman and her hair. Literature elucidates on the historical richness of representation for Black people as well as the contemporary relevance of representation for Black women in particular. Furthermore, beauty discourse extends beyond the merely corporeal and finds meaning in historical, political, and circumstantial frames of thought. Eight semi-structured interviews were conducted with Black women. These interviews generated three discursive themes – hair and politics, hair and media and finally, circumstantial self-representation. Exploring these themes revealed that hair, as a projection of the self, is constantly redefining itself and its meaning in a progressive social culture. Furthermore, women assume agency and a degree of importance and identity from the hairstyles they choose to wear on a daily basis. / Psychology / M.A. (Psychology-Research Consultation)

Are There Differences in Gender, Race, and Age Regarding Body Dissatisfaction?

Dye, Heather 17 August 2016 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine any differences that may exist among demographic variables such as gender, age, and race in regard to internalization of society and media messages leading to body dissatisfaction that may lead to disordered eating behaviors such as preoccupation with weight, dieting, and eating restraint. A total of 324 participants completed the demographic questionnaire, the Multidimensional Body Self Relations Questionnaire, the Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire for women, the Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire-Revised-Male-Version for men, and Rotter’s Internal-External (I-E) Locus of Control Scale. The results of this study found, as predicted, that Caucasians reported higher internalization, higher body dissatisfaction, and higher preoccupation with weight, dieting, and eating restraint than African Americans. This study showed no differences regarding men’s and women’s internalization or body dissatisfaction but did reveal that women reported higher preoccupation with weight, dieting, and eating restraint than men. Regarding age, this study found that age did not predict internalization, body dissatisfaction, or preoccupation with weight, dieting, and eating restraint.

Professional Black South African women : body image, cultural expectations and the workplace

Papakyriakou, Xanthipi Malama 02 1900 (has links)
The study explored the body image of Professional Black South African women, cultural expectations, and their experiences in Westernised working milieus, utilising a phenomenological approach and qualitative exploratory design, located within Constructionism. Data were collected through purposive sampling (and snowballing) through individual face-to-face voice-recorded semi-structured interviews with 11 participants in/around Gauteng. Analysis was done through content analysis utilising thematic networks (Attride-Stirling). Major findings: Western values have influenced participants; Lower weight and thinness do not automatically correspond with assumptions about HIV/AIDS, instead correspond with healthier lifestyle choices; Body shape not weight or size was the prominent area of focus for most participants; Clothes size determines perception of overweight; Overweight has consequences. Forty-five per cent of participants were content with their bodies, 18% dissatisfied/unhappy, 18% satisfied, one happy, one apathetic. Tswanas were generally smaller-figured; Zulus, Northern Sotho/Pedi, Xhosa in general traditionally expected full-bodied women. Overt expectations in the workplace were not found. / Psychology / Master of Arts (Psychology)

Examining the phenomena of eating habits and body image satisfaction: an in depth study of the elite rhythmic gymnast as they transition into retirement from the sport / Examing the phenomena of eating habits and body image

Di Palma, Amy 02 1900 (has links)
Text in English / Rhythmic gymnastics is a demanding sport that requires the athlete to not only execute the moves and elements required with perfection, but also demands a very specific lean body type in order to compete and be successful within the sport. This study explores retired gymnasts’ experiences of competing in rhythmic gymnastics at an elite level, as well as, exploring their experiences in relation to personal body image satisfaction and eating habits when they enter into retirement from the sport. The aim of this study is to provide an understanding of the athlete’s experiences as a rhythmic gymnast, as well as aspects of body image satisfaction and eating habits, following retirement from rhythmic gymnastics. The study provided a semi-structured interview to seven retired elite rhythmic gymnasts from Canada that had competed at provincial, national, and international levels. The data for this in-depth phenomenological study was obtained through the means of the semi-structured interviews to allow for the researcher to obtain an understanding of each of the gymnasts own personal experiences in their retired years. The transcription of each interview was then analysed and coded, first manually and then electronically using the qualitative coding software program ATLAS.ti, into various categories as well as themes found within the data. Findings were interpreted utilising the method of phenomenology explored themes relating to negative body image and poor eating habits both during their athletic career and after they had transitioned out of the sport and into retirement. In addition, the themes suggested that most of the former athletes still related to their elite rhythmic gymnastics identity with respect to their body image even after years of being in retirement. Participants seemed to highlight difficulties with lower self-confidence and self-esteem, as well as struggles regarding the acceptance of their body type and body image, themes also spoke to some participants’ dissatisfaction towards their new body post gymnastics. Ethical approval was obtained and all ethical standards were maintained throughout the duration of the research. / Psychology / M.A. (Psychology)

Teresa Cristina da Costa Vieira 11 January 2016 (has links)

Specifically seeks to identify the elements that can interfere positively and / or negatively, in relation therapist - patient, analyze the resonances that therapeutic monitoring exercises on patients undergoing bariatric surgery. Sought to both the theoretical contributions about the body in Merleau Ponty and psychoanalysis Winnicott. Mainly addressed the relationship therapist - patient by Winnicott's approach and within the context of psychologists working with the theme of obesity. This is a qualitative study, whose participants seven clinical psychologists who develop activities in the field of bariatric surgery, both in the private and public sectors and two included patients aged 33 to 56 years, who underwent surgery and continue in psychological counseling. Semistructured interview used to psychologists and for both patients through a different starter question. The analysis of the narrative was taken from the thematic analysis, which identified themes related to the issue of professional practice and theoretical concepts used by psychologists, especially axes as the nature of the bond established relationship therapist and patient, the importance of family participation in the process and especially body image experienced by the patient before, during and after surgery. O care that the psychologist should have to take into account in its therapeutic relationship , the promotion of self-knowledge and understanding about a body experienced by the patient and therefore a body guy, not objectified ; constituted themselves as elements of fundamental importance , reminding us that policies accompanying attitudes are necessary but not sufficient for successful treatment. For these reasons, we point out that intrapsychic issues and the internal resources of the patient are sufficiently worked out, thus avoiding that the same replace the symptom of obesity by another symptom of compulsion.
