We question then, which significations are imputed to this body image, whose women submit aesthetics surgeries. In such a way, we objectify to analyze, from the psychoanalytic point of view: how the construction of the corporal image happens in the process of becoming woman; which problematical are disclosed by these women referring to the idealizations narcissists of this body and that way are configured in the feminine imaginary the cult to the body of the present time. "Hledání ženské identity". Filosofická a literárněvědná příkladová studie způsobu podání ženské sebeidentifikace v západoevropské a postsovětské literatuře / "The search for female identity". A philosophical and literary study on the representation of female self-identification using the example of occidental and post-soviet literature

Chernova, Iana January 2021 (has links)
This work has been given the title "The Search for Female Identity" because its core question is: what constitutes female self-identification? This search is carried out by searching literary traces, since self-identification can be deconstructed by analyzing the texts. Texts by an Austrian and a Soviet-Russian writer were chosen as the basis for this deconstruction. In a comparison of their two writings, the difference between the two socio-political systems in terms of their possible influence on self-identification could also be crystallized. The theories used (mainly poststructuralist) together with the interpretations help to extract the pre-discursive nature of the texts and to decipher the image of femininity. The analysis carried out showed that in both societies this picture is full of myths, however, they were developed and implemented differently. In the course of this development the individualistic Western culture encounters the limits of its individuality, which also affects women and influences their unity in themselves. Meanwhile, the post-Soviet society striving for all-round collectivism fails to control the construction of identity, since it does not offer enough playground for self-determination and overwhelms especially women with the imposed standards. Key words: female...

The Body Images of Black and White Women at an Urban University

Vincent, Sarah M. 11 June 2007 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / This thesis examined the body images of Black and White women at an urban university. Self perception of body image may be positive or negative, healthy or unhealthy, and may be influenced by various factors. Qualitative interviews were completed with eight Black and eight White non-Hispanic female college students. A common theme emerged regarding images of beautiful and ideal bodies. The women held similar standards of beauty for White and Black women with one exception: White women were expected to be thinner whereas Black women were expected to be heavier. In addition, the women were of a common mind with regard to the influence of men, fashion, and relationships with female family members on their body images. Racial differences emerged when the women discussed male perceptions of female bodies. Women of both races believed that racial and ethnic minority men were more accepting of women with diverse body types than were White men. Familial influences on body image included the mother-daughter relationship and a new finding of the sister-sister relationship. Finally, an emergent and unexpected finding centered on a woman's history of sexual and physical abuse. Each of the six women who experienced sexual or physical abuse reported some level of negative body imagery. These findings are discussed in the context of the existing body image literature and recommendations are made regarding directions for future research.

Hair representations among Black South African women : exploring identity and notions of beauty

Marco, Jenna-Lee 11 1900 (has links)
South Africa is a country of diversity, culture and various identities; and beneath this diversity, lays the complexity of defining and owning a space for oneself. This study was motivated with the intention to understand Black women’s representations in South Africa as well as the social interactions evident in the relationship between a Black woman and her hair. Literature elucidates on the historical richness of representation for Black people as well as the contemporary relevance of representation for Black women in particular. Furthermore, beauty discourse extends beyond the merely corporeal and finds meaning in historical, political, and circumstantial frames of thought. Eight semi-structured interviews were conducted with Black women. These interviews generated three discursive themes – hair and politics, hair and media and finally, circumstantial self-representation. Exploring these themes revealed that hair, as a projection of the self, is constantly redefining itself and its meaning in a progressive social culture. Furthermore, women assume agency and a degree of importance and identity from the hairstyles they choose to wear on a daily basis. / Psychology / M.A. (Psychology-Research Consultation)

De musas e de transgressoras - um recorte do feminino em Chico Buarque: um enfoque sistêmico-funcional

No. of bitstreams: 1 Fabio Ferreira Pinto.pdf: 1289265 bytes, checksum: 8d2f2ab206d441ac62b0a980fa90316e (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-06-11 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The purpose of this Master s Dissertation is the critical analysis of the image of woman in the man-woman relationship between two areas of knowledge that haven t always gone hand in hand. Literature is the art of words, so it makes sense to apply theories that come from linguistic studies to understand more deeply what underlies a literary text. Addressing the woman's representation in our literature is almost confounded with the love theme, as well as it happens in Brazilian popular music. To do so, I have the support of the Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) proposal, a multifunctional theory for which the language simultaneously serves three metafunctions (or meanings): Ideational (information), Interpersonal (interaction) and Textual (organizes the text according to a purpose and according to the socio-historical-cultural environment requirements). The research involves examination of the following songs: Olha, Maria (1971), by Chico Buarque, Tom Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes; Ana de Amsterdam, by Chico Buarque and Ruy Guerra (1972-1973); Mil perdões (1983), by Chico Buarque, and Cecilia (1998), by Chico Buarque. Through the theoretical framework of SFG, I relate the lexicogrammatical choices made in the microstructure of the text by the lyrics of these songs to compose this image of the woman who reveals herself in the macrostructure of discourse. Addressing women representation in our literature almost merges with the love theme, as well as it happens in Brazilian popular music. This research should answer the following questions: (a) What kind of woman vision underlies the four popular love songs? (b) How can one answer the question in (a) using SFG s metafunctions?

Recovering women: autobiographical performances of illness experience / Autobiographical performances of illness experience

Carr, Tessa Willoughby, 1970- 29 August 2008 (has links)
This dissertation layers trauma studies theory with feminist theories of performance and autobiography to investigate how women's autobiographically based performances of illness experience disrupt and/or reinforce master discourses of medicine, identity, and knowledge. Feminist theories of performance and autobiography share with trauma studies the distrust of traditional frames and mechanisms of representation, and seek to discover new methods of interpreting experiences that lie "outside the realm" of normative discourse. These theories are further linked by their shared focus on agency and identity construction and an understanding of autobiography that emphasizes the limitations of language and memory which allows for aporia, contradiction, and dissonance, and the belief that testimony functions as a politicized performative of truth. Employing these theoretical perspectives, Carr investigates how these performances witness to radical reconfigurations of identity through the transference of trauma into conveyable life narrative -- even when those narratives falls outside the paradigm of traditional storytelling structures. Carr questions how the structures and content of these performances reveal what traumas are inflicted not only through illness, but also through treatment and care within the western medical model. Throughout the study Carr examines the moments when the cognitive structures of trauma are transmitted into performance through a variety of feminist and avant-garde performance techniques. Carr investigates the work of specific performers and contextualizes the performances within popular culture and medical discourse. Performances analyzed include; Robbie McCauley's Sugar, Susan Miller's My Left Breast, Brandyn Barbara Artis's Sister Girl, and Deb Margolin's bringing the fishermen home and Three Seconds in the Key. Carr questions how the formerly or currently ill female body performing in public disrupts notions of fixed and stable identity while examining the myriad identity constructions embedded within illness narrative. Rather than simplistic triumphant stories of individual cure and recovery, these complex expressions of traumatic experience reveal patterns of cultural oppression that keep the ill female body isolated and silenced. This study attempts to intervene in that silence by foregrounding these politicized performances.

Representation of Black African women's bodies in the soap opera, Generations.

Thabethe, Funeka E. January 2008 (has links)
Feminists have always taken an interest in the manner in which the media represents women. This is due to the fact that the media is always accused of representing women in an unfavourable manner. If not under-represented, women are objectified or used to perpetuate negative stereotypes about women in general. Research demonstrates that the media has moved from under-representation of women. However, equal representation to men or overrepresentation of women does not necessarily mean correct representation. This dissertation is based on the soapi opera Generations, a soapie where female characters outnumber male characters. The purpose of this dissertation is to look at the manner in which black African women characters' bodies are represented. The women characters' bodies have been studied as social constructions with an underlying message. Foucault's ideas of subjectivity were employed to look at the unlimited possibilities as well as limitations of the body. Subjectivity when looking at bodies have been analysed through the flexibility of bodies to be changed through discipline, body gestures as well as adornment with jewellery and other accessories. Moreover, the underlying culture behind the various constructions was studied. The findings were that in the soapi opera Generations, the representation of women characters' bodies was highly influenced by western culture. The choice of a character's body size, hair texture and complexion is mainly that which is defined as beautiful in western culture. / Thesis (M.A.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2008.

Physically active adult women's experiences with plus-size athletic apparel

Christel, Deborah A. 06 July 2012 (has links)
Substantial research on the functionality of athletic apparel has been conducted; however little consideration has been given to the plus size figure. Societal messages suggest that overweight women are lazy and therefore would not be interested in athletic apparel. The purpose of this study was to determine overweight adult women's experience with athletic clothing. The sample consisted of 14 women, ages 30 to 65 who wore size 1X to 3X. They were each supplied with a Nike brand athletic outfit and participated in two in depth interviews. Data collection methods included qualitative interviews, quantitative surveys and guided journaling. The major findings suggest that overweight women have difficulty shopping for clothing. Difficulty and frustration was experienced on a number of levels including; limited stores, limited selection and styles, fitting issues, over-priced items and less color options compared to smaller sizes. The findings suggest overweight women experience emotional anxiety when trying on clothing for the first time. Dissatisfaction with clothing fit was attributed to the belief their body is unsuitable and needs to change. Satisfaction with clothing fit was attributed to the ability of the apparel designer. Many negative experiences have left this sample feeling disappointed and marginalized. Some participant's experienced increased desire to participate in physical activity while others felt exercise was a necessity regardless of the clothing available. By trying on the Nike brand clothing, it gave the women in this study an alternative way of dressing themselves which has enabled several women to feel differently about their size and their body in athletic clothing. The current sample showed behaviors of internalization by using dehumanizing terms to describe body parts. The sample felt discriminated against in the media and wanted to see larger women modeling clothing. Apparel companies should include a wider variety of sizes in their brick and mortar stores as to not alienate a population. Apparel companies should incorporate diverse models into advertisement to include the plus-size population. Proving high quality athletic apparel to plus size women provided an opportunity for them to experience their bodies in a new perspective. Future studies should develop new pattern making, grading and sizing techniques in order to provide better fitting athletic apparel for large size bodies. Studies expanding on fit and comfort of athletic apparel for large bodies should be explored. This paper provides an initial indication of how plus size women experience athletic apparel. Further understanding of clothing, fit and exercise behavior are needed. / Graduation date: 2013 / Access restricted to the OSU Community at author's request from July 18, 2012 - January 18, 2013

A importância da relação terapeuta - paciente na preparação e acompanhamento psicológico de pessoas que se submetem à cirurgia bariátrica

Gabriela Nunes Catarino 25 March 2014 (has links)
