Brillouin light scattering of ion-implanted and annealed diamond surfacesMotochi, Isaac January 2016 (has links)
The sub-surface region of chemical vapour deposition (CVD) diamond was
transformed by C+ ion implantation followed by isochronal annealing up to 1200
oC. Different implantation regimes and with different energies at different implantation
temperatures would give different thicknesses were studied. This enabled a
study in the evolution of the stiffness of the damaged layer as a function of annealing.
The technique of choice for this study was the non-destructive Brillouin light
scattering (BLS) utilizing two scattering geometries; indirectly scattered phonons
(Kr¨uger-type geometry) for temperature anneals up to 600 oC, and the conventional
surface ripple mechanism up to 1200 oC. It has been argued that surface acoustic
waves (SAW) on a transparent medium are enhanced by applying a thin metallic
reflective layer on the surface, this study has showed that opacity of the substrate
is key. In fact, bulk modes with SAW-like characteristics emanating from indirect
photon scattering off phonons after reflection at the smooth reflective back of the
sample dominated down to transmission below 5% which was observed after annealing
between 500-600 oC (low annealing temperatures). The other complementing
techniques employed to understand the changing structure of the ion implanted
diamond were Raman spectroscopy, electromagnetic transmission in the visible
range, electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) and high-resolution transmission
electron microscopy (HRTEM) in addition to theoretical techniques: transport of
ions in matter (TRIM), finite element modelling (FEM) and elastodynamic Green’s
functions. Although the electronic techniques showed a structurally changing material
at the low annealing temperatures, the optical ones did not show significant
changes in the ion-damaged material possibly due to lack of distinct interface between
the pristine diamond and the ion irradiated region at these lower annealing
temperatures.

By means of tensile essays, NiCr total crowns were removed from usinated tronco-conical abutments composed by an Ti-6Al-4V alloy; the performance of 4 cementig agents (S. S. White zinc phoshate, Ketac Cem Easymix glass ionomer, RelayX Luting 2 composite resin and Panavia 21 TC special acrylic resin) was evaluated. Among a total of 50 abutments, 40 were used with it surface presenting high smoothness (as they come from manufacturer) and distributed in groups of 10 elements, each group for each cementing agent; the other 10 abutments had had its surfaces modified by LASER and were used only with phosphate. The mechanical essays were developed at a MTS 810 universal machine, adjusted to a 0.5 mm/m velocity. The ANOVA applied to data pointed out the existence of significant differences between groups; the subsequent Tukey´s test (p<0.05) also detected significant differences, except at comparisons of original/phosphate versus original/ RelayX and original/phosphate versus original/ KetacCem. To non-irradiated abutments, the better performance was presented by Panavia 21 (1,127.996 N); RelyX (478.197 N) showed itself similar only to phosphate (430.662 N), wich had a performance similar to that of KetacCem (227.705 N). The referred LASER irradiation promoted an increased resistance to the phosfate, which reached 1,514.872 N.

Desenho: Estudo observacional controlado. Local realizado: Centro de saúde secundário e laboratório universitário. Pacientes: Treze mulheres sadias e férteis (controles) e treze usuárias do DIUT200 (casos). lntervençao: Biópsia endometrial realizada entre o 6°-1 0° dia pós-ovulatório do ciclo menstrual. / Objective: To measure the expression of avf33 integrin in the endometrium of IUDT200 users. Design: Observational controlled study Setting: Secondary health care center and University laboratory Patients: Thirteen healthy fertile women (contrais) and thirteen IUDT200 users (cases). lntervention: Endometrial biopsy on postovulatory day 6-1 O of the menstrual cycle. Main Outcome Measure: The expression of avJ33 by HSCORE on cryopreserved endometrial sections. Results: The HSCORE for IUD users was 0.9 ± 0.7 (mean ± SEM), while for contrais was 2.13 ± 0.7 (mean ±SEM) (p < 0.001 Teste-t de Student). Ali contrais were positiva for avJ33, but women with IUD did not express avl33 integrin in 38.5% of the cases (p < 0.03 Fisher's exact test). Conclusion: These results support the theory that copper IUD T200 also has a mechanism of action that is directed at interference with uterine receptivity and implantation.

Development of catheter techniques to treat native and acquired stenoses in congenital heart diseaseMagee, Alan Gordon January 2016 (has links)
Aim: To describe innovative uses of catheter based treatment in a variety of native and post surgical stenoses in children and young adults with congenital heart disease. Background: Cardiac catheterization in man was first described 1929 and since then there has been a drive to develop endovascular techniques to investigate and treat both congenital and acquired heart disease. Many of the advances are being made in congenital heart disease. Methods: A number of congenital cardiac stenotic lesions were studied including baffle obstruction after atrial switch for transposition of the great arteries, aortic stenosis in infants, coarctation of the aorta, peripheral pulmonary artery stenosis and superior vena caval obstruction. The use of angioplasty balloons, cutting balloons, stents and alternative catheter approaches were investigated for these lesions. Results: Following atrial redirection surgery for transposition of the great arteries balloon angioplasty improved baffle haemodynamics. The technique of anterograde balloon dilation of the aortic valve was developed and had superior outcomes in terms of aortic insufficiency compared to a retrograde approach in neonates with severe aortic valve stenosis. In an animal model of peripheral pulmonary arterial stenosis, the application of cutting balloon angioplasty produced effective relief in a controlled fashion. Balloon mounted stents were used in patients with native and post surgical coarctation of the aorta with significant relief of stenosis and relief of hypertension. Finally, a group of patients with superior vena obstruction syndrome after surgical repair of partial anomalous pulmonary venous drainage had successful treatment using balloon mounted stents. Conclusions: Catheter based treatment of congenital and post surgical vascular stenoses of the heart and great arteries using angioplasty balloons, cutting balloons and balloon mounted stents is safe and appears to be effective in the short and medium term. It may represent a useful alternative to surgery and will reduce the number of surgical procedures required over a lifetime. Future directions will include bio-absorbable stents and hybrid techniques involving surgery.

"Percebendo a experiência dos coordenadores na implantação de serviços abertos em álcool e outras drogas" / Noticing the experience of coordinators in implantation of open services to deal with the use alcohol and other drugsFerreira, Paulo Sergio 17 March 2004 (has links)
The study has as objective to describe the implantation of services to deal with alcohol and drugs and to analyze the experience lived by the coordinators in the process implantation. We accomplished an investigation with the coordinators of the services using a semi-structured questionnaire adapted to describe the need of the implantation. The instrument counted with eight open subjects and it was used a recorded interview as resource and it was allowed a qualitative approach based on the study of case. The research was accomplished between September of 2002 and January of 2003 involving the professionals of superior level who had the coordinator position. It was verified by the obtained results, that the repressed demand and the alcohol users' dissatisfaction and their relatives being treated in other services of mental health, generated insecurity in those professionals who were not prepared for this kind of attendance pressing, this way, the government to create the specialized services. Those services were created with the proposal of treating the subject inside the ambulatory context, without excluding the user from his social environment. As for the model to be implanted it was the medical one, with an insertion of new models such as the psychological social and cultural, and giving priority to a team multidisciplinary team respecting their specificities. Finally the produced knowledge showed us that the services opened to treat drugs and alcohol dependents have been showing a progress in this kind of treatment, but these services still need to qualify a larger number of professionals to work in this area and to look for new treatment alternatives in its several models to indicate preventive and therapeutic actions to intermediate that condition more and more distressing that is the users' demand in search of solutions for the dependence.
