Behaviour of Self Consolidating Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete Beams Under Reversed Cyclic Loading

Concrete is a very weak and brittle material in tension. It has been shown in previous researches that the addition of steel fibers to a concrete matrix can improve this behavior. The ability of fibers to control and redistribute stresses after cracking results in a number of improvements in the structural behaviour of concrete. A review of existing literature shows that the addition of steel fibers enhances concrete’s tensile resistance, crack control properties, ductility and damage tolerance. In beams, fibers can transform brittle shear response into a flexural response and promote ductility, thereby allowing for a full or partial replacement of traditional shear reinforcement. The enhanced shear capacity, ductility and damage tolerance of Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete (SFRC) can also potentially be used to relax seismic detailing requirements in frames by partially replacing the required transverse reinforcement in the plastic hinge regions of RC beams. One of the drawbacks associated with SFRC is that the addition of steel fibers to a traditional concrete mix at high fiber contents can result in workability problems. The combined use of Self-Consolidating Concrete (SCC) and fibers can solve this problem and facilitate placement for a wider range of structural applications. Although several studies have been conducted on the behaviour of SFRC beams subjected to monotonic loading, there is limited research on the behaviour of SFRC beams under cyclic or reverse-cyclic loading. This thesis presents the results of an experimental and analytical study conducted on nine SFRC beam specimens tested under load reversals. The main objective of this research program was to investigate the effect of fibers on structural behaviour and to examine the ability of steel fibers to replace transverse reinforcement. The experimental and analytical results show that use of fibers results in several improvements in behaviour, including enhanced damage tolerance and post-peak ductility. The results also show that steel fibers can potentially be used to allow for a reduction of transverse reinforcement in beams, however further research is required.

Lateral Torsional Buckling of Wooden Beam-deck Systems

A theoretical study is conducted for the lateral torsional buckling of wooden beam-deck assemblies consisting of twin beams braced by tongue-and-groove decking at the top. Two models are developed, each with a series of analytical and numerical solutions formulated. The first model targets twin-beam-deck assemblies where deck boards and other components are detailed to provide full continuous lateral restraint while the second model is built for situations where the beams are allowed to sway laterally and the relative lateral movement between the beams is partially restrained by the deck boards. In the first model, focus is on wind uplift while in the second model, both gravity and uplift loading scenarios are investigated. In the first model, an energy method is adopted and the principle of stationary potential energy is evoked to formulate closed-form solutions, energy-based solutions and a finite element solution. The validity of the present solutions is verified against a finite element based ABAQUS model. Similarly, a family of solutions is developed under the sway model and verified against the ABAQUS. Parametric studies are conducted for both models to examine the effects of various variables on the buckling capacity. A comparative investigation on the behavioral difference between the two models under ABAQUS is also presented. Overall, the restraining effects of deck boards bracing either on the beam compression or tension side is observed to have a significant influence on the lateral torsional buckling capacity of the twin-beam-deck assemblies.

Blast Performance of Reiforced Concrete Beams Constructed with High-Strength Concrete and High-Strength Reinforcement

This thesis focuses on the dynamic and static behaviour of reinforced concrete beams built using high-strength concrete and high-strength steel reinforcement. As part of this study, a total of 8 high-strength concrete beams, built with and without steel fibres, and reinforced with high strength ASTM A1035 bars are tested under simulated blast loading using the University of Ottawa shock-tube, with an additional 3 companion beams tested under quasi-static loading. The variables considered in this study include: concrete type, fibre content, steel reinforcement ratio and steel reinforcement type. The behaviour of the beams with high-strength steel bars is compared to a companion set of beams reinforced with conventional steel reinforcement. The criteria used to evaluate the blast performance of the beams includes: overall blast capacity, maximum and residual displacements, secondary fragmentation and crack control. The dynamic results show that high strength concrete beams reinforced with high-strength steel are able to resist higher blast loads and reduce displacements when compared to companion beams with conventional steel reinforcement. The results also demonstrate that the addition of steel fibres is effective in controlling crack formation, minimizing secondary blast fragments, reducing displacements and further increasing overall blast capacity. However, the use of high-strength steel and high-strength concrete also shows potential for brittle failures under extreme blast pressures. The static results show that specimens with high-strength steel bars do not increase beam stiffness, but significantly increase peak load carrying capacity when compared to beams with the same ratio of conventional steel reinforcement. The analytical research program aims at predicting the response of the test beams using dynamic inelastic single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) analysis and includes a sensitivity analysis examining the effect of various modelling parameters on the response predictions. Overall the analytical results demonstrate that SDOF analysis can be used to predict the blast response of beams built with high-strength concrete and steel reinforcement with acceptable accuracy.

Cette thèse se concentre sur la fabrication de cellule solaire IIIN- V sur substrat de GaP (001) et sur la croissance de couche de GaP sur Si (001). Le but est de réaliser des cellules solaires hautes efficacité sur un substrat à faible coût afin de les intégrer dans des centrales solaire photovoltaïque sous concentration. Les principaux résultats obtenus montrent : - L’importance de l’utilisation d’AlGaP en tant que couche de prénucléation pour annihiler les parois d’antiphase à l’interface GaP/ Si (néfaste pour les propriétés optoélectroniques des dispositifs) - De nombreuses similitude entre la croissance de GaAsN et de GaPN ce qui permet d’élaborer une stratégie afin d’optimiser les propriétés optoélectroniques du GaAsPN - De fortes corrélations entre les propriétés optique et éléctriques dans les nitrures dilués - La réalisation préliminaire d’une cellule solaire monojonction sur GaP ayant un rendement encourageant de 2.25% considérant la faible épaisseur de l’absorbeur dans cette cellule (300 nm) / This thesis focuses on optimizing the heterogeneous growth of IIIN- V solar cells on GaP (001) and GaP nanolayers on Si (001). Traitement sous rayonnement ionisant de mélanges amidon-lignine et de leurs modèles : étude et quantification des modifications induites. / Study and quantification of the effects induced by ionizing radiation on starch-lignin blends and their corresponding models.

Cette travail été réalisée dans le cadre de la Projet LignoStarch ANR CP2D pour connaître les différents phénomènes induite par rayonnement ionisants dans les mélanges de l'amidon et lignine au niveau moléculaire. L'amidon peut être utilisé seul ou en combinaison avec d'autres composés pour élaborer des articles biodégradables à partir de ressources renouvelables. La lignine et ses dérivés sont bons candidats pour limiter la sensibilité d'eau des matériaux à base d'amidon, mais ils ne sont pas compatibles avec des polysaccharides. Le traitement sous faisceau d'électrons est proposé comme une méthode efficace pour induire les liaisons covalentes entre les deux constituants (amidon et lignine). En comparaison avec les mélanges de départ, les propriétés des mélanges irradiés montrent qu'il est possible d'ajuster les propriétés mécaniques du matériau final. Afin d'améliorer la compréhension et la maîtrise de ces effets de l'irradiation, une étude de mélanges modèles de maltodextrines et de divers alcools ou acides aromatiques a été réalisée. Les résultats montrent une compétition entre les phénomènes de dégradation par scission et le greffage. Les analyses par CES, RMN, et MALDI-TOF permettent de mettre en évidence et de quantifier les greffages consécutifs à l'irradiation. L'exploitation par la méthode statistique proposée par Saito des données relatives à l'évolution des masses molaires et des fractions de gel dans des mélanges à base de pullulane permet d'accéder à des grandeurs quantifiant l'efficacité des deux réactions en compétition. Ainsi, les rendements radiochimiques de coupure de chaine G(S) et de pontage G(X) ont pu être calculés pour différentes quantités d'alcool cinnamique introduites dans les mélanges. Les évolutions observées rendent bien compte de la formation de gel qui n'est observée qu'en présence d'une quantité minimale d'alcool aromatique, lorsque la condition G(s) < 4 G(x) est satisfaite. Starch has the advantage of being biodegradable and agriculture based renewable resource that can be converted into a thermoplastic material with or without any additive. Lignin and its derivatives are good candidates for reducing the water sensitivity of starch based materials; however being hydrophobic in nature they are not compatible with the polysaccharides. Electron Beam radiation has been proposed as an efficient method for modifying the starch lignin blends and creating covalent linkages between the two constituents for improved blend stability. Previous studies as part of the Project have shown that the mechanical properties of the irradiated blends can be positively modified by choosing an appropriate blend composition. For a better understanding of how the properties of the blend can be tailored, an understanding of the radiation-induced processes was carried out using model blends comprising maltodextrin and different aromatic compounds having structural features of lignin monomers. The blends were analyzed using SEC, NMR, and MALDI-TOF for placing in evidence the phenomenon of radiation-induced grafting to compete with chain scission in presence of the aromatic additives. The quantification of the radiochemical yields of scission G(s) and crosslinking G(x) were carried out using the blends of pullulan polysaccharide as a function of varying amounts of aromatic additive in the blend. The methods of calculation exploited here are based on the study of radiation-induced molecular mass changes before the formation of gel as proposed by Saito and the quantification of sol-gel content for formulations resulting in gel as proposed by the Charlesby-Pinner method. Precision element modelling for long term tracking in the LHC luminosity upgrade

As part of the Large Hadron Collider high luminosity upgrade it is proposed to include crab cavities and large aperture niobium tin final focussing magnets in the lattice in order to enhance the luminosity. In this thesis the dynamics of a proposed cavity design were considered in terms of their impact upon the dynamic aperture of the machine. Taylor maps for the cavity were created and used to perform this analysis with a full assessment of their validity. A set of symplectic thin cavity models were also developed and cross checked with the Taylor maps. Finally, dynamic aperture studies were performed using these models in order to determine which components of the crab cavity dynamics are important when considering the long term stability of the beam in the LHC upgrade. It is shown that crab cavities exhibit little impact on the LHC beam stability. For the final focussing magnets a preliminary study was conducted into the importance of including their fringe fields in a model of the LHC upgrade. A technical study was carried out into developing a symplectic model which was compatible with the current magnet models use for dynamic aperture studies. A preliminary dynamic aperture study was performed with the inclusion of fringe fields for the final focussing magnets from which the fringe fields are shown to have a negative impact on the long term beam stability.

Modelling and correction of scatter in a switched source multi-ring detector X-ray CT machine

The RTT80 cone beam x-ray computed tomography system, developed by Rapiscan Systems Ltd, uses switched x-ray sources and fixed offset detector rings to remove the time consuming mechanical rotations of earlier imaging systems. This system produces three-dimensional images in real time. A Geant4 Monte Carlo simulation has been developed to investigate scattered radiation in the uncollimated detector machine, showing high levels of scatter behind highly attenuating objects. A new scatter correction method is proposed which estimates scatter to each detector, in each projection, from 1cm³ voxels of the computerised object. The scatter distributions from different materials are pre-determined using a Geant4 Monte Carlo simulation. The intensity of scatter from each voxel is based on measured data. The method is applied to two simulated test objects, a water box simulated with a monoenergetic input spectrum and a test suitcase simulated with a polyenergetic spectrum. The test suitcase is broken down into separate components to analyse the method further. The results show that the method performs well for low attenuating objects, but the results are sensitive to the intensity values. However, the method provides a good basis for a scatter correction method.

Synthesis of cubic boron nitride thin films on silicon substrate using electron beam evaporation.

Cubic boron nitride (cBN) synthesis has gained lot of interest during the past decade as it offers outstanding physical and chemical properties like high hardness, high wear resistance, and chemical inertness. Despite of their excellent properties, every application of cBN is hindered by high compressive stresses and poor adhesion. The cost of equipment is also high in almost all the techniques used so far. This thesis deals with the synthesis of cubic phase of boron nitride on Si (100) wafers using electron beam evaporator, a low cost equipment that is capable of depositing films with reduced stresses. Using this process, need of ion beam employed in ion beam assisted processes can be eliminated thus reducing the surface damage and enhancing the film adhesion. Four sets of samples have been deposited by varying substrate temperature and the deposition time. scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) techniques have been used to determine the structure and composition of the films deposited. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was performed on one of the samples to determine the thickness of the film deposited for the given deposition rate. Several samples showed dendrites being formed as a stage of film formation. It was found that deposition at substrate temperature of 400oC and for a period of one hour yielded high quality cubic boron nitride films.

Effects of dental loss and senescence on aspects of adult mandibular morphology in South Africans

Changes occur to the mandible with dental loss and senescence. However, the influence that these changes have on sex and ancestry estimations remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of dental loss and senescence on changes in mandibular morphology. The outcome has implications for both forensic anthropology and restorative dentistry. The study sample consisted of 717 mandibles consisting of both male and female South Africans of African (SAA) and European ancestry (SAE). To minimise the effects of variation in dentition amongst sex-ancestry groups, the sample included individuals with a spectrum of tooth loss patterns, namely efficient and inefficient occlusions as well as no occlusions. Dentition was considered efficient when the remaining teeth in occlusion were evenly distributed between the sides. Linear measurements as well as geometric morphometric shape analyses were performed. Shape analyses of the complete mandible were performed on models from digitised landmarks by using a MicroScribe G2. Detailed shape analyses of the ramus and chin area as well as measurements of the cortical thickness at specific sites were executed on images generated by cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). A comprehensive assessment of changes in shape, size and cortical thickness of the mandible with age and dental loss were made. Shape and size differences of the mandible were evaluated for discriminant abilities between sex and ancestry groups. Although most dimensions decreased with tooth loss, the greatest impact was noted in the loss of alveolar bone. The mandibular angle increased minimally in size when a few teeth were lost, but recovered to some extent with further tooth loss. The cortical thicknesses at the mental foramen lingually as well as in the midline in females, were relatively spared with tooth loss. Male individuals of SAA were often the most resilient to tooth loss. In general external linear dimensions were maintained with age despite tooth loss. Conversely, measurements of cortical bone thickness decreased slightly, but could have been influenced by dental loss. The shape of the chin and gonial area was more affected by aging in SAE. The sex and ancestry discriminant ability of the linear dimensions when considered collectively approximated 90%, in general improving further when tooth loss was taken into account. All linear measurements were smaller in females and in general tooth loss accentuated sex differences. SAA exhibited greater dimensions, apart from maximum ramus height, bigonial breadth and cortical thickness at the gonion. The mental tubercles were more prominent than the pogonion in SAE (square chin) and vice versa in individuals of SAA (pointed chin). The gonial area in individuals of African ancestry was broad and more convex and the gonial eversion more prominent with a more upright ramus. Discriminant qualities of the gonial shape for sex in individuals of African ancestry reached 90% within dentition groups. Ramus flexure and chin shape were not found to be useful in sex estimation.
