Two Essays on Liquidity Essay I: Information Related Trading on Two Nearly Identical Options Essay II: The Importance of the Liquidity Premium in the Presence of Declining Transactions CostLi, Wei-Xuan 19 December 2008 (has links)
In the first essay, I examine the impact of the introduction of exchange traded funds (ETFs) options on the information related trading of index options. Two option pairs, NASDAQ 100 index (NDX) and ETF (QQQ, currently QQQQ ) options, and Standard and Poor's 500 index (SPX) options and S & P Depository Receipts (SPY) options, are studied. I test the hypothesis, based on the theory of Chowdhry and Nanda (1991), and Admati and Pleiderer (1988), that the information component of spreads for index options should decline after ETF options were introduced. The method of George, Kaul and Nimalendran (1991) is used to estimate the adverse selection proportion of log quoted spread and revenue from quoted spread. Primary results show that the adverse selection component of index options declines after the introduction of ETF options, and that the adverse selection component of options on index ETFs is greater than that of options on index, suggesting more informed trading for ETF options. The second essay examines whether the liquidity premium decreases as the costs of transactions decline. Nine liquidity measures are estimated to form liquidity deciles portfolios. I use several benchmark asset pricing models in fixed and rolling 36-month samples to estimate time variation liquidity premia. Surprisingly, the results show that the liquidity premium does not monotonically decline over time, and it increases in the period from 2001 to 2006. This is inconsistent with the implication of liquidity-adjusted capital asset pricing models (L-CAPM). It is likely that the liquidity premium is generated by size and book-to-market factors, rather than the liquidity factor.

Terapia ocupacional e grupos: em busca de espaços de subjetivação / not informed by the authorSamea, Marisa 13 August 2002 (has links)
The present project focus on an occupational therapy group in order to study a group process in the rehabilitation field in terms of the relationship between the participants subjectivity and their social space. It is our aim to consider the possibility of making the occupational therapy group a space to build new life project for the participants, taking into account their limitations - physical, psychic, social and institutional -and their potentialities. This discussion is supported by a seven-month study carried out at Estação Especial da Lapa in an Occupational Therapy group formed by disabled or psychically disturbed people. Activities were developed inside the institution as well as in social environments outside. The group process analysis was based on E. Pichon-Rivières theoretical reference (although the group work followed the Occupational Therapy procedures) combined with the knowledge obtained in the occupational therapy practice. According to the Pichonian reference, the institutional aspects take part in the process, therefore, the group reading includes the institutional context issues. Considering the disability and mental health fields, we discuss the possibility of a more intensive interchange of knowledge between these two areas in order to make the group a device for the rehabilitation investigation and intervention. The Occupational Therapy group approach is analyzed in terms of its condition to promote the manifestation of contents related to subjective and inter-subjective history and in terms of its formation and the its possibility of acquiring a new meaning. Based on the manifested contents and the group process analysis, the effectiveness of this device as well as its prospects to provide new practical and theoretical basis were studied

Repairing broken bones and broken promises: informed consent and orthopaedic practice in South AfricaRamokgopa, Mmampapatla Thomas 19 October 2011 (has links)
The discipline of orthopaedic surgery is a fast growing surgical specialty directed at the diagnosis and management of disorders of the musculoskeletal system e.g. acute trauma, fractured or dislocated joints, elective reconstructive surgery as well as related research. The standard of care in orthopaedic surgery treatment reflects the status of its evolution and what is currently available in terms of the knowledge, surgical expertise, orthopaedic implant materials, and equipment.
It is the duty of the orthopaedic surgeon to live up to the promise as best he or she can to heal when it is possible to heal and to provide the level of care expected that transcends simple surgical expertise and bio-technological intervention.
The informed consent process is an often neglected but vital component of the standard of care which has to satisfy prescribed ethical and legal requirements. This research is focused on how to heighten the awareness of, and to encourage engagement within the orthopaedic surgery fraternity with the informed consent process. If the informed consent is given more recognition within this group, it will benefit the potentially vulnerable orthopaedic patient, protect the
orthopaedic surgeon against litigation, and importantly, contribute to the ethical imperatives bound in a doctor-patient relationship.
For this research, a vast search of the available local and international literature has been perused and my finding is that the application of Ethics and recognition of the informed consent concept within the medical community in general is gathering momentum and it must be both supported and internalized by those in orthopaedic surgical practice.

Trauma-Informed Care for Sexual and Gender Minority Survivors of Intimate Partner ViolenceScheer, Jillian Ryan January 2018 (has links)
Thesis advisor: V. Paul Poteat / Intimate partner violence (IPV) occurs in LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) relationships at rates equal to or even higher than cisgender heterosexual relationships (Walters, Chen, & Breidig, 2013). The health consequences of IPV are well documented (Kwako et al., 2011). Trauma-informed care (TIC) is one service approach receiving increasing support for use with IPV survivors (Warshaw, Lyon, Phillips, & Hooper, 2014). Nevertheless, there is little research exploring the association between TIC and health among LGBTQ IPV survivors. Immobilization is prevalent for IPV survivors for whom fight or flight may increase risk of violence during traumatic situations (van der Kolk, 1989). TIC might be well-positioned to counter these immobilizing effects in effort to facilitate mobilization and better health for IPV survivors. The relationship between TIC and health through mobilizing mechanisms has not yet been tested. This study examined several mobilizing mechanisms as mediating the relationship between TIC and health including: 1) lower social withdrawal; 2) lower shame; 3) greater emotion regulation; and, 4) greater empowerment. Among 227 LGBTQ adults, structural equation modeling analyses tested the relationship between TIC and health, and the mediating effects of lower social withdrawal and shame, and greater emotion regulation and empowerment on the relationship between TIC and health. Results indicated that the direct effects of TIC on mental and physical health were not significant. Indirect effects of TIC on mental and physical health through the set of mobilizing mechanisms were not significant. However, TIC did predict greater empowerment and emotion regulation and lower social withdrawal. Lower social withdrawal and lower shame also predicted better mental health, while lower shame and emotion regulation predicted better physical health. Practitioners need to uncover additional services and resources beyond TIC that could improve health among LGBTQ IPV survivors. Research should continue to examine the potential effects of TIC in addition to how it is applied in the context of evidence-based treatment programs that are adapted for sexual and gender minorities. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2018. / Submitted to: Boston College. Informovaný souhlas (srovnávací studie) / Informed Consent (Comparative Study)Franta, Jakub January 2018 (has links)
Informed consent is one of the most discussed issues of medical law. This thesis tries to contribute to the discussion through a comparative study between Czech law and Canadian law (the common law part of Canadian law), focusing on the basic components of the subject matter. The thesis is divided into six parts. The first one deals with information disclosure and consent to treatment in the paternalistic model and the participatory model of a doctor-patient relationship. The second part provides an overview of relevant Czech and Canadian legal sources and also of key milestones in the development of informed consent in both countries. The third part of the thesis discusses the concept of informed consent. The fourth part is focused on the disclosure - its content and scope, form and other related aspects. The fifth part of the thesis deals with the consent itself - its elements, the withdrawal of consent and the refusal to give consent. Finally, the sixth part deals with the specifics of minors. With regard to the basic features of informed consent, it can be clearly stated that the compared legal systems are fundamentally the same. Differences can be seen only when analysing the subject matter into very great detail and those differences are usually various technicalities (e.g. determination of...

Análise institucional e práxis considerações a partir de uma sócio-análise / Not informedÁvila, Lazslo Antonio 29 August 1983 (has links)

A Mãe Jovem e o seu Primeiro Bebê / Not informed by the authorArcieri, João Bosco Casarim 20 March 1998 (has links)
The objectives were to know: who takes care of a first infant of a very young mother, her awareness of this situation, who supports her, who advises her and who she be-lieves in about the childs development. Evolutionary and ethological-interactionist theories were used, guided by the concept of human-environment adaptation. Historical, social and physical environment issues were introduced. Half of the maternal grandmothers are from a poor agrarian region were tradionally the constitution of the family starts at a very early age. Two groups of people were interviewed: one who lives with the babys father and one who does not. The former group usually lives on his own. The latter usually lives in the mothers mothers house. We found that the young mothers themselves, in both groups, look after their babies without further difficulties. The mothers who live with their mothers and not the childs father, tend to count on their own mothers to guide and help them with the child care, and look up to them as someone who understands about the development of the child. The ones who live with the childs father are more self confident, refer less to their mothers and count on different people in-cluding the pediatrician to advise them, counting more on their knowledge. x I hope that this information will be useful for multiprofession-al groups that work with public health programs, specially preventive ones

The present thesis analyzes the phonological (SematosEmic) structure of Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) in terms of crossings among the following parameters: handshape; palm orientation; hand orientation; relationship between hands; hand movement; and facial expression indicating positive and negative feelings. SignTracking-2 software (Duduchi & Capovilla, 2006) was used to undertake the analysis of the corpus of 10,400 signals of the second edition of the New Libras dictionary (Capovilla, Raphael, & Mauricio, 2012). The objective was to characterize Libras in search of combinations among the most typical SematosEmes. This thesis presents data from an extensive pilot analysis that used SignTracking-2 to calculate the absolute and relative incidences of signs containing the following 13 intersections among SematosEmes: 1: right handshape and left handshape (AMD x AME); 2: right handshape and right hand movement (AMD x MMD); 3: right handshape and right palm orientation (AMD x OPD); 4: left handshape and left hand movement (AME x MME); 5: left handshape and left palm orientation (AME x OPE); 6: right handshape and right hand orientation and right palm orientation (AMD x OMD x OPD); 7: left handshape and left hand orientation and left palm orientation (AME x OME x OPE); 8: right handshape and right palm orientation and right hand movement (AMD x OPD x MMD); 9: right handshape and left handshape and relationship between hands (AMD x AME x RM); 10: right hand movement and positive facial expression (MMD x SSP); 11: right hand movement and negative facial expression (MMD x SSN); 12: right handshape and right hand movement and positive facial expression (AMD x MMD x SSP); 13: right handshape and right hand movement and negative facial expression (AMD x MMD x SSN). In order to discover what are the most typical combinations among Libras SematosEmes, 122.163 SematosEme combinations were analyzed and the incidence of signs containing those combinations in the sign corpus of the dictionary was computed. Using the software BuscaSigno-2, the incidence of signs pertaing to each of the 122.163 combinations was computed. Of the 122.163 combinations analyzed, the software identified 21.328 valid combinations with incidence greater than zero. After that, the software computed the sign incidence at each of the 21.328 valid combinations, and calculated the mean sign incidence. Based on that, the software identified the 369 canonical combinations, in which the sign incidence was greater than the average sign incidence in all combinations. These 369 canonical combinations were then ordered by decreasing incidence, in order to characterize Libras in its \"DNA\". Such a characterization is useful for further studies in Sign Language Comparative Linguistics, in which Libras is to be compated to other sign languages. The present thesis presents the most typical combinations among SematosEmes that characterize Libras. The findings are discussed in the light of the Information Processing Model of Cognitive Psychology and the New Paradigm Neuropsycholinguistic of Oral Language, Writing and Signal from Capovilla (2011, 2012, 2013). The present thesis paves the way to further studies on the relationships between sign structure and cognitive sign processing, such as memory sign retrieval Libras by the Brazilian deaf

Doenças do corpo e doenças da alma: investigação psicossomática psicanalítica / Body Diseases and Soul Diseases. Psychoanalytic Psychosomatic InvestigationÁvila, Lazslo Antonio 18 December 1995 (has links)
Enfim, apresenta 3 pontos para o balizamento da proposta: a consideracao do sintoma psicossomatico como um hieroglifo, o modelo da faixa de moebius como representacao apropriada para a interacao corpo-mente, e o ato psicanalitico como definidor da natureza da intervencao psicossomatica / The present work has emerged from the questions arisen at the clinicai treatment of patients who look for the Service of the Medicai College of São José do Rio Preto, São Paulo, Brazil, in order to get the relief to their psychosomatic sufferings. From their demand and the need to promote an adequacy between the way of \"listening\" recommended by the Psychoanalysis and the own conditions of the institutionai service, a clinicai service, which we try to characterize here with its own and heuristic aspects, has begun. We have started by the location of the problem implicit in Psychosomatics, the mind-body interaction, in the intersection of several knowledges and borderline field between the Psychoanaiysis and Medicine. We have marked some of the contradictions present in this field and the difficulties of their characterization. Then we have proceeded to a report of the History of Medicine since its origins concerning healing through the 19th century when, with the adoption of the Cartesian dichotomy between mind-body and new medicai paradigms, the Hysteria and its enigmas became the starting point for a new knowledge. We described the appearence of Psychoanaiysis showing the main points of the psychoanalytic theory relevant to the understanding of the formation of symptoms and somatization. We propposed a division into two branches derived from the impact of the Psychoanaiysis on the heaiing techniques: the Psychosomatic Medicine and the Psychoanaiytic Psychosomatics, having collected their respective contributions. Thus we presented this paper which should be considered the minute of the foundation ofPsychosomatics. We propposed that in Georg Groddeck\'s work one may find the basis of a psychoanaiytic practice towards these patients. We have condensed and worked his best book, The Book of the It. Next, we presented the parameters of a Psychosomatic Practice inspired by this perspective. We have reporteded eleven cases of psychosomatic patients seen at the Service, and we have discussed what they mean when working out a proposal of a psychoanalytic investigation of the psychosomatic phenomena. Finally we presented three parameters for the delimitation of this proposal: the consideration of the psychosomatic symptom as a hieroglyph, the model of the Moebius\' Band as a proper representation of the mind-body interaction, and the psychoanalytic act as a nature-defining act of the psychosomatic intervention

Leitura e escrita da letra na obra de Jacques Lacan / not informed by the authorSilva, Guilherme Celio Oliveira 16 May 2018 (has links)
This research analyzes the statute of the letter in the first nine seminars of Jacques Lacan. It begins with a question about the genesis of the concept in the work, when analyzing the text L\'instance de la lettre dans l\'inconscient or la raison depuis Freud and apparitions of ideas regarding reading and writing of the unconscious in the first four seminars. The notion of transliteration is taken here as a symbolic operation of the letter. Secondly, the analysis will turn to the problematic of the unary trait in seminary IX and a possible separation of reading and writing, when the psychoanalyst speaks of a genesis of the writing from the reading of the trace and the writing of the signifier when talking about the trait unary
