Uncovering spirituality as a means to prevent managerial blind spots

Coetzee, Pierre 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MBA (Business Management))--University of Stellenbosch, 2008. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Managerial blind spots are business realities that impact the organisation and its employees adversely. Managers are susceptible to their prejudices and ignorance and are not aware that they are sometimes biased when making decisions. All humans have blind spots that impact their functioning. This paper describes the link between blind spots and a person’s conscious and unconscious behaviour. Blind spots are entrenched in the psyche and not easily dismissed. Cognitive dissonance, naïve realism, the introspection illusion and the unconscious role in non-rational behaviour argue strongly that it is not easy to eliminate blind spots. Though internal and cognitive processes are important in understanding the origin of blind spots, they also flourish in the environment. Factors that influence the formation of blind spots include managerial competence, fellow employees and information quality. There are numerous definitions of and approaches to spirituality. When considering the potential value of spirituality within a business context, specifically in relation to blind spots, it is necessary to define spirituality clearly. There is widespread consensus that spirituality is not a synonym for religion. Though there are numerous definitions for spirituality, it has been discovered there are common themes that can be distilled from all the definitions. The essence of spirituality can be described in six terms: love, authenticity, simplicity, silence, living in the present (now) and gratitude. Common spiritual themes include self-awareness, interconnectedness and wholeness. It is in these spiritual themes that managers could unlock the potential value to address managerial blind spots. Managers who are less self-aware are also more susceptible to blind spots. Through various spiritual practices, managers could grow in self-awareness and increase their mental health (e.g. mindfulness and meditation). Some spiritual practices focus on interconnectedness and wholeness which will increase the likelihood of eliminating prejudice and bias (e.g. practising loving-kindness). The leader who employs a spiritual approach to leadership will not only change himself, but will have a positive impact on fellow employees and the organisation. Various organisations where a spiritual approach has been implemented by the leadership have benefited and are considered success stories. The leader has a perfect opportunity to implement a spiritual approach to work, since it dovetails with the emerging paradigm and the future requirements of work. Seeing and implementing the opportunities offered by a spiritual approach, will not only help the leader to address his or her managerial blind spots, but will also benefit the leader, fellow workers, the organisation and society as a whole.

The transformative effect of learning about a culture through foreign language acquisition : A case study of Greek adults learning about Hispanic culture in Spanish language classes in Greece.

Kalouptsi, Maria January 2016 (has links)
This paper concerns a case study which attempts to underline the importance of culture learning through foreign language acquisition in the transformation of prejudices and the fomentation of cultural awareness. More specifically, it aims to present the way in which adult learners’ critical reflection on culture in combination to foreign language learning can lead to their acknowledgement of the equity between cultures and their proximity to “the other”, a fact that is considered to foster cultural respect and awareness. For doing so, a qualitative approach was used in order to examine the perceptions of a group of adults learning Spanish in an elementary level class in Greece. Data was collected from in-depth interviews where participants were asked to expose their opinion of the importance of culture and its connection to language, to consider the implication of culture learning in foreign language learning and to share their personal views of the Hispanic culture as it derives from their studying the Spanish language and reflecting on the Hispanic culture-Spanish language correlation. Research delivered positive outcomes concerning this specific issue and showed evidence that the transformative effect of learning about a culture through language acquisition is indeed possible. Suggestions for further research on the matter are made so as to investigate the replicability of such a transformative effect in other similar cases and to secure the generalization of results.

ASSESSMENT MODEL FOR MEASURING CASCADING ECONOMIC IMPACTS DUE TO SEVERE WEATHER-INDUCED POWER OUTAGES

KwangHyuk Im (7036595) 13 August 2019 (has links)
This research has developed an assessment model and framework to measure cascading economic impacts in terms of gross domestic product (GDP) loss due to severe weather-induced power outages. The major objectives of this research were to (1) identify physical correlations between different industries within an economic system, (2) define deterministic relationships through the values of interconnectedness and interdependency between 71 industries, (3) complete probabilistic estimation of economic impacts using historical economic data spanning from 1997 to 2016, and (4) develop an assessment model that can be used in the future to measure economic loss in terms of gross domestic product (GDP) across 71 industries.

Practitioner perceptions of the effectiveness of dramatized interpretaton

Adcock, Lynne Therese January 2005 (has links)
Interpretation has the potential to play an important role in involving the general public in the dialogue about sustainability, and what this may mean for the future of humans on the earth. Yet interpreters often fail to address this issue. In fact, it can be argued that much interpretation fails to truly engage its audiences or provoke serious thought about our relationship with the rest of nature or our future lifestyles. How can interpretation be made more engaging and provocative, and contribute to the dialogue about sustainability? How can it reach this potential? Some educators and interpreters advocate the use of drama to help people connect with natural and cultural heritage. Powerful dramatic experiences can become embedded in the emotions and leave enduring impressions. Drama is used as an educational tool around the world. Can it be used by interpreters to expand visitors’ conceptions of the human-nature culture milieu? This study addresses the paucity of empirical evidence regarding the effectiveness of dramatized interpretation. Ten practitioners of dramatized interpretation were interviewed to explore the current use of drama in interpretation in Queensland, Australia, and in particular, the practitioners’ perceptions of these practices and their effectiveness. Current practice was evaluated according to the drama, interpretation and education literature, particularly recent theoretical developments. Practitioners displayed a strong understanding of the importance of engagement in interpretation, using a variety of drama forms and strategies to create resonant experiences and strengthen visitors’ connections with natural, historic and cultural heritage. In addition, they designed their programs to provoke thought and foster deep understanding of environmental and conservation issues, and obtained evidence of provocation and conceptual enhancement. Notwithstanding this, it is concluded that dramatized interpretation could have a greater impact on conceptual enhancement if practitioners designed their programs according to constructivist, group learning and sociocultural perspectives. Practitioners could also make a greater contribution to general environmental education if they explicitly addressed the issue of sustainability, using drama to tell stories that encapsulate the concept of sustainability and provide a vision of sustainable living. A checklist is provided to assist practitioners in the design and evaluation of dramatized programs. Recommendations are also given for interpreters wishing to explore the application of drama to their interpretive setting.

Jane Austen ou le besoin de remailler le monde : une représentation romanesque problématique. / Jane Austen and the Need to Mend the World : A Problematic Novelistic Representation.

Tremblet, Aurélie 01 December 2017 (has links)
Our project is to offer an analysis of the nine major works of English novelist Jane Austen. Austen (1775-1817) lived through a time of political, economic and social changes, on top of which came further personal and professional experiences of loss and separation which led to an overwhelming sense of fragmentation. As to counter what she deemed a serious threat to her world, Austen thus elaborates a profound ethics of attachment, testifying to a real concern for the notions of sociability, sympathy and politeness, which bears striking similarities with Shaftesbury’s philosophy. Concern for others is defined as the only real path towards social harmony, personal felicity and morality, underlining the centrality of social relationships in Austen’s representation of the individual. However, we will throw light on the complexity and problems of such representation, so as to show how instrumental those ambivalences are in defining Austen actually as a novelist of the « I », preoccupied with the notion of personal desire and sharing the concerns of her Romantic contemporaries as early as Northanger Abbey and Sense and Sensibility.

An Ecofeminist Reading of Louise Erdrich’s Novel Love Medicine

Tirén, Stina January 2021 (has links)
Louise Erdrich's novel Love Medicine presents a variety of voices that depict thetruths of Chippewa life and how they as a group are victims of a society that authorizesoppression and domination. Studies show that Chippewa tribes have a close connectionto nature and with each other as people. Ecofeminist critics draw analogies between theexploitation of nature and the oppression of groups such as those based on race, class, and sexuality, which results in a distortion of Native people's identity and connection tonature. Since the characters and nature are both oppressed and exploited by the U.Sgovernment, it becomes relevant to draw parallels between Erdrich's characters andnature with ecofeminism. The analysis concludes that ecofeminism can be applied toErdrich's novel because they share some values such as the importance of striving forinterconnection between humans and nature to free both from the power structure. TheChippewa characters and the U.S government can be identified in ecofeminist discourseas a set of dualisms. However, there are also some differences between ecofeminismand the way in which Erdrich depicts her Chippewa characters and nature. Erdrich’sstory shows that both female and male characters of Chippewa origin possess a sacredrelationship to Mother Earth, not only women, as ecofeminists would suggest.

Revisiting the Desert Sublime: Billy's Ecotheological Journey in Cormac McCarthy's The Crossing

Riding, Michael J. 19 November 2009 (has links) (PDF)
While McCarthy studies have emphasized elements of the sacred in his writing, this thesis adds a new historical perspective and synthesis to reading paradigms of Cormac McCarthy. The Crossing combines the patterns of the ancient pre-Hebraic genre of the desert sublime with the basic formula of the American Western genre to interrogate McCarthy's question of whether in the postmodern moment one can still divest oneself in the desert and find access to the sublime. In an era of an invisible or absent God where post-humanist thought erases the anthropocentric supremacy of human over animal and the earth itself, the one constant in the desert sublime genre is the physical reality of the desert itself. Thus, McCarthy's recourse is to infuse the desert sublime with contemporary ecological thought. In the desert Billy Parham encounters other desert dwellers who share with him shards and traces of belief while Billy also learns bodily from the material experience of his physical sojourn. Billy is a nascent postmodern saint whose journeys into the desert reveal to him the ecotheological principle of the interconnectedness of all things as a natural physical law that undergirds the spiritual truth guiding ethical behavior. Billy arrives at a point of radical transformation that teaches him the necessity of choosing compassion, affiliation, simple service, and humility in a world of interconnected beings and living forms.

The Rights of Nature in the Scandinavian Wilderness : the case of Fulufjället National Park

Boda, Emese Annabella January 2022 (has links)
The idea of recognizing the Rights of Nature has emerged as a response and an alternative source of stimulus to tackle today’s environmental problems causing eco-anxiety. This study intends to give insight on how a high level of environmental awareness can contribute substantially to a balanced relationship with Nature. In addition, the study aspires to inspect whether diverse knowledge systems on harmonious development processes can facilitate a new system of relationships between people and Nature. It follows that one of the main aims of this thesis is also to explore how the compound perspectives of different scientific disciplines on the concept of sustainability, especially environmental sustainability, can work together to deliver a strong and unified message to societies: a message at the heart of which is a transformational social change in the way Nature is perceived and treated. The legal recognition of Nature’s intrinsic value is at the centre of this emerging paradigm shift, reflecting a comprehensive people-oriented approach towards Nature. In this light, the study seeks to explore the possible changes which would take place if Fulufjallet National Park embedded in the Scandinavian Wilderness area became a rights-bearing subject of the law. The research is supported by a discourse analysis methodology which has identified a framework of a three-level system of relationships representing a potential shift in the current paradigm of sustainable development in the context of the protected area in the Swedish high mountains. It has been found that acknowledging the legal subjectivity of the national park as a whole, as well as of the natural treasures and the plant and animal kingdoms within it, may encourage people to discover the core value of Nature from an Earth-centered perspective. Furthermore, based on the results of data analysis, the principles and values behind the unique Swedish law called the Right of Public Access may open up a new dimension in the respectful social relations between individuals and Nature by fostering the implementation of the concept of the Rights of Nature and Earth Jurisprudence anywhere in the country.
