Cross-cultural differences: the experiences, challenges and strengths for partners in committed interacial relationshipsDe Vries, Tielke Anna Eveline January 2011 (has links)
The topic of interpersonal relationships and the factors that enhance the longevity and strength of these have been well documented. Whilst there has been a steady increase in the occurrence of interracial relationships, it has not been matched by an increase in studies on the phenomenon and indeed very little empirical attention has been given to these relationships. Leslie and Letiecq (2004) highlight that the existing research on the phenomenon focuses primarily on the reasons individuals select partners outside of their own racial group. As interracial marriages are reportedly more vulnerable to divorce than marriages among same-race individuals, it seems important to examine the dynamics and quality of interracial relationships (Leslie & Letiecq, 2004). The goal of the study was therefore to explore the cross-cultural differences that inform the experiences, challenges, and strengths for partners in committed interracial relationships. In this qualitative, exploratory, descriptive and contextual study, the author has explored and described the specific cross-cultural differences that the couple has encountered in their relationship and the impact that these differences have had on the quality of their relationship. Furthermore the study aimed to explore and describe the strengths the couple has drawn from these cross-cultural differences to enhance the quality of their relationship. A combination of purposive and snowball sampling techniques has been utilised to identify interracial couples who have been in a committed monogamous relationship of at least one year. The sample consisted of eleven individuals. Semi-structured individual interviews were utilised as the data collection tool, and Tesch‟s model of data analysis (in Creswell, 1998) has been employed. This model of data analysis consists of eight steps that have been used to analyse the data. Five themes emerged from the study: (1) cultural difference factors, (2) negative factors that influence the couple‟s coping with cultural differences, (3) positive factors that influence the couple‟s coping with cultural differences, (4) factors relating to cultural differences that strengthen the relationship and (5) recommendations to other interracial couples. The findings of the study make a meaningful contribution to couple counselling interventions for interracial couples, and also add to the body of knowledge on this sparsely researched topic.

Cross-Group Relationship Satisfaction: A Meta-AnalysisHenderson, Elena Kelsey 01 June 2019 (has links)
Cross-group relationships are defined by romantic relationships involving two individuals from distinct racial or ethnic groups. For this paper, the terms “interethnic” and “interracial” are used as specifiers for the umbrella terms, “intergroup” and “cross-group.” Studies examining whether cross-group romantic relationships are more or less satisfying than intergroup romantic relationships have yielded discrepant findings. Through a systematic review and meta-analysis of 27 studies, we found that there are no significant difference between cross-group and intergroup relationship satisfaction (aggregate d = .024, 95% CI [-0.076; 0.123]). Tests of moderation found that the amount of Asian participants included in individual studies on cross-group relationship satisfaction is significantly associated with effect size d (β = .005, p = .02; 95% CI [.001; .008]).

Managing diversity in post-war Kosovo: multiculturalism in practiceKrasniqi, Arton January 2015 (has links)
This thesis embarks on efforts to understand how effective is multiculturalism in addressing ethnic cleavages in post-conflict societies. Kosovo, as a post-socialist and post-war country, is the particular case analyzed in order to understand how multiculturalist policies have in the last fifteen years affected interethnic relations in the country. By embarking on a case study approach, I use two main methods, interviewing and document analysis, as a means of triangulation to reinforce the arguments used in the analysis and interpretation of data. Liberal multiculturalism as elaborated by Kymlicka is the theoretical model which is used continuously to give meaning to the empirical data analyzed. The success of multiculturalism is approached in two respects: first, I look at what went wrong during the implementation of such multicultural policies, namely, the approach of international community in addressing interethnic relations through the introduction of group-rights. Secondly, I look specifically at the elements of liberal multiculturalism and how did they affect interethnic relations for the last fifteen years. The thesis shows a shared blame for the persisting fragility of interethnic relations in Kosovo both to the approach of the international community, as well as to the multiculturalist model itself.

Based on an ethnography realised aboard four different ships, the dissertation encourages reflexion over the notion of commercial fluidity, understood as the the ongoing search of consistency and the movement of goods. Instead of working on an overall analysis of the flow, the dissertation focuses on the way this flow is built, negotiated and is denied within the work of the seamen. As this concept of fluidity was originally conceived on land, the first part of the dissertation provides insights into the numerous players revolving around the ship and its activity: States, shipowners, charterers, intermediaries and monitoring organisations form the « technical macro-system » of the maritime freight by supplying, chartering, assisting and monitoring the ship. The second part demonstrates how the prevalence of this system of fluidity resulted in the development of a global labour market aimed at having an free labour factor that is able to adapt to the fluctuations of the ship. Leading to new instabilities, the opening-up of national labour markets requires on the other hand the introduction of new regulations. Last but not least, the third part demonstrates that, as a result of the fragmentation of labour collectives, the risks associated with vessel navigation as well as the necessity of maintaining consistency, the activity of merchant seafarers is characterised by many types of arrangements and deals. Isolated and folded on itself, the ship appears as an entity involving many actors and located at the heart of a large and complex network. Within this network, consistency is obtained through negotiation and delicate compromise. This consistency is driven by a close monitoring of the ship and the seafarers activity, which does not undermine the isolation of the ship however since this isolation is a condition to fluidity.

Musiques et musiciens en « Pays Mobongo » : fondements musicaux et performatifs des dynamiques interethniques dans les monts du Chaillu (Gabon) / Musics and musicians in “Mobongo Land” : the musical and performative grounds of interethnic dynamics in the Chaillu mountains (Gabon)Ruyter, Magali de 18 January 2016 (has links)
In southern Gabon and neighboring Congo, Babongo Pygmies form a dispersed group whose homogeneity remains to be demonstrated. If they have received little scientific attention until recently, this is probably because the stereotypes associated with Pygmy groups elsewhere in Central Africa do not seem to apply easily to them. Based on an ethnography focused on the Chaillu mountains area, this thesis contributes to a better knowledge of this population. The fact that the Babongo (sing. mobongo) have the same social and cultural institutions as their Mitsogo and Masangu non-Pygmy neighbors makes it tempting to analyze their interrelationship in ethnic terms. The thesis aims to characterize the Pygmy/non-Pygmy relationship, which is distinct from that between non-Pygmy groups, by its fundamentally bivalent and asymmetric qualities. The argument makes use of two analytical frameworks: “mobongo land” on the one hand, and mainly ritual music on the other. The conceptual entity “mobongo land” emphasizes in geographic terms the central role the Babongo play in the reproduction of the multi-ethnic society that inhabits this area, in spite of their lower social status. The Babongo are considered skilled musicians, and music is treated here as a means of communication linking together a content and a relationship. Various levels of observation are made use of: the musical material and its rules of composition, its performance itself, and the recurrence of performative events. Considering these various levels allows for both the production as well as the perception of music to be taken into account. It also frames the plasticity of musical change in communicational terms. The underlying logic of the relationship between Pygmy and non-Pygmy communities emerges from the meta-communicational dimension of musical practice in ritual contexts. Analysis of this practice highlights the perspectives held by the Babongo and their non-Pygmy neighbors on their interethnic relationship, as well as the analogy that exists between the Babongo/neighbor relationship and that held to exist between women and men. Additionally, I suggest that the characteristic ambivalence of the interethnic relationship in mobongo land derives above all from the Babongo’s compliance with two normative systems. In the end, it appears that that which most distinguishes the Babongo from their neighbors ultimately moves them closer to other Pygmy groups in Central Africa.

Vietnamese American attitudes toward intercultural and interracial marriageKhong, Regina 01 January 2005 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis was to examine the attitudes of Vietnamese Americans towards Vietnamese interracial marriages. It also sought to extend previous research in this field and incorporate insights regarding the literature of Vietnamese, Vietnamese- American, and American culture to the literature that addresses the question of interracial marriage. The research question of this paper was, "What are the attitudes of Vietnamese Americans toward interracial marriage between Vietnamese Americans and other races?"
The methodology used was a self-administered anonymous questionnaire given to a limited group of Vietnamese participants in California to gather their views on this subject. The results suggest that the Vietnamese surveyed are more accepting of interracial marriages than the literature would suggest.
