CONCEPTIONS OF PATRIOTISM AMONG CHINESE INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS IN U.S. HIGHER EDUCATION: A PHENOMENOGRAPHIC STUDYXiaoyue Qin (8071649) 14 January 2021 (has links)
<p>Chinese international students make up the largest group of international students in the United States, especially in the higher education sector. In the context of rising patriotism and nationalism in the China and the U.S. accompanied by deteriorating China-U.S. relationship and some recent incidents that showed Chinese international students’ intense patriotic sentiments, this study explored the ways in which Chinese international students in U.S. higher education perceive patriotism. More specifically, the study aims to answer two research questions: 1. How do Chinese international students in the U.S. conceptualize patriotism? 2. What are the factors that impact Chinese international students’ construction of patriotism? </p>
<p>The study adopted phenomenography as the research methodology and recruited 15 participants with varied backgrounds from a Midwest University. In-depth interviews were conducted and analyzed to generate the different categories that described ways of perceiving patriotism. The findings demonstrated five categories of patriotism: irrational patriotism, extreme patriotism, identity patriotism, constructive patriotism and cosmopolitan patriotism. The five categories had complex relationships with identity patriotism at the core. The study also revealed that Chinese international students’ construction of patriotism was impacted by formal education, extracurricular activities, media propaganda, family’s influence, Chinese culture, and their own life experiences. This study revealed the dynamic and multifaceted political stances of Chinese international students and offered more explanations for their patriotic behaviors instead of portraying them as the brainwashed generation. Practical implications and recommendations for future research were offered based on the findings of this study.</p>

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Patriotic education began when the Woman’s Relief Corps was established. The earliest patriotic education was done on Memorial Day rather than on a daily basis in the schoolroom. The WRC’s plan for patriotic education went into full gear in 1893. The history of the Woman’s Relief Corps and the implementation of patriotic education is a fascinating one that shows how a conservative organization of women implemented a regimented daily routine that today shows more about the women and their beliefs than one might expect. As time passed after the Civil War, more and more Union veterans died leaving the legacy to keep the memory of the War alive to the WRC. Patriotic education provided a perfect avenue to keep that memory alive as well as to inculcate the students with patriotism and how to be good citizens. As patriotic education evolved and grew, there was a pattern of changing rhetoric among educators and the WRC. This is visible when one looks at the discussions amongst the members of the WRC during and immediately after a war. Generally, during a war, the women of the WRC would step back into a supportive role of American military and then immediately after a war would take advantage of the patriotic fervor to further expand patriotic education.

The present study investigates the School Subject Morals and Patriotic Education in Atheneu Sergipense in the 70s of the twentieth century. This study is connected to the theories and methodologies of School Subjects History and from the perspective of Cultural History. For the construction of this work were used scholars as a: André Chervel (l990), Ivor Goodson (2001, 1998, 1990), Dominique Julia (2001) and Viñao Frago (2008); beyond readings from the following sources: Documents of National Commission of Morals and Patriotic, Laws of Education, Records Book, Textbooks and writing activities. The investigation of the subject Morals and Patriotic Education in Atheneu Sergipense revealed that his teaching was connected to exposure of contents and patriotic practice. The content passed through the presentation of the patriotism, knowledge of the Brazilian State, as well as the creation of morals habits and behaviors. The surveys were conducted: in the Library and Archive of Atheneu Sergipense, in the State Corporation of Education of Sergipe and Dom Luciano José Cabral Library. / O presente trabalho investiga a Disciplina Escolar Educação Moral e Cívica no Atheneu Sergipense na década de 70 do século XX. Encontra-se vinculado aos pressupostos teóricometodológicos da História das Disciplinas Escolares e sob a perspectiva da História Cultural. Para a construção desse trabalho utilizou-se teóricos como André Chervel (l990); Ivor Goodson (2001, 1998, 1990); Dominique Julia (2001) e Vinão Frago (2008); além de leituras das seguintes fontes: Documento da Comissão Nacional de Moral e Civismo, Legislação de Ensino, Cadernetas Escolares, Livros Didáticos e atividades escritas. A investigação da disciplina Educação Moral e Cívica no Atheneu Sergipense revelou que o seu ensino estava entrelaçado a exposição dos conteúdos e prática cívica. O conteúdo perpassava pela apresentação do civismo, conhecimento do Estado Brasileiro, bem como, na construção de hábitos e comportamentos morais. This thesis examines changes and evolvement in conceptual notions of nationalism and national identity from the beginning of the 19th century until present. The thesis is composed of two parts, theoretical and practical. The theoretical part delineates the concepts of nation, national identity and attempts to characterize Czech national identity. Further, it explores the notion in the context of socio-political transformations in our motherland. Moreover, this section looks at notions of education and patriotic education and the way such education was exercised in schools in particular historical periods. The study also concentrates on the concept of mother tongue and its role in building Czech national identity. Comparison of various ways the relationship towards mother tongue in various types of primary schools in this and last century is likewise offered. The practical part consists of two research segments. The first one analyzes various curricula, school material and textbooks from the beginning of the last century until present with emphasis on patriotic education. Emphasis has been put on textbooks intended for the fifth grade of all types of primary schools. This dissertation considers films to be double-sided mirrors that absorb political and cultural content from one side, with filmmakers filtering and elaborating the content between the two surfaces, and then transmitting the elaborated points to the audience. The elaboration of political content can be performed in an educational and propagandistic way, depicting and supporting specific political ideas. This dissertation analyses the first two programs of a Russian government program, Patriotic Education for Russian Federation Citizens (2001- 2005 and 2006-2010) (hereinafter, 'Patriotic Education'), and identifies six political priorities that can be observed and analysed in eleven Russian war movies. It will first be explained how the movies serve as propagandistic and educational tools in the context of Patriotic Education, projecting its political priorities to the audience. Second, it will be explained how a continuity with the Soviet past is displayed in the content of war films and the way they depict some of the elements promoted by Patriotic Education.

Previous issue date: 2008 / This dissertation presents the construction of the cronical history of the Instituto de Humanidades, private school, in Fortaleza – Ceará, during its functioning period: from 1904 to 1914, that is, in the context of the belle époque. In the theoretical part, the features of the role of youth organizations in the prevention of extremism in the youth environment are presented: basic concepts, theoretical approaches, interethnic relations in the youth environment are analyzed: basic concepts and ways of their harmonization through youth organizations. The practical part describes the development of a program for the prevention of extremism and the harmonization of interethnic relations with the involvement of the potential of youth organizations of the North Ural city district, outlines the specifics of the implementation and analysis of the program for the prevention of extremism and the harmonization of interethnic relations in the institution for youth work on the example of the Municipal state Institution "Association of Youth and Adolescent clubs of the North Ural City District. In conclusion, the results are summed up in accordance with the tasks set. The purpose of the study is to develop a program for the prevention of extremism and the harmonization of interethnic relations with the involvement of the potential of youth organizations of the North Ural City District of the Sverdlovsk region. The volume of work was 94 pages. The work contains 4 tables, 8 figures, 1 appendix. The bibliographic list contains 61 sources.
