The aim of the thesis is to characterize the folding containers as one of the potential solutions to the problem of the repositioning of empty containers and to evaluate the possibility of their practical use in intermodal transport. The theoretical part characterizes contemporary development in international trade, intermodal transportation, the issue of empty containers and also characterizes foldable containers together with the assumptions of their successful introduction to the market. The practical part deals with current concepts of foldable containers, there is also an example for comparing the costs of transport when using standard or foldable containers and the opinion of a representative of one of the leading shipping companies on use foldable containers in practice. To obtain information used in the practical part of the thesis a secondary research was carried out, where most information comes from research papers and websites, and also primary research was done in the form of an interview with a representative of the shipping company. In conclusion is the evaluation of the possibility of using foldable containers in practice which is based on the information obtained through research.

A Mathematical Modeling Approach Using Time Constraints: The Case of Economies of Scale and Sustainability in Intermodal Facilities

Over the last thirty years, intermodal freight transportation has been a constantly expanding sector. The vast increase of freight volumes contributes to the increase of various issues in the freight corridors as well as the urban environment. The deterioration of congestion in the urban environment and the increase on freight movements on the highways have resulted in the increase of emissions. For this reason, new policies and regulations are put forth to address the environmental effects of freight transportation. This study deals with the intermodal freight network design problem from the shipping company's perspective, aiming to simultaneously minimize emission levels and cost of freight transportation. We propose a mathematical model for optimizing the design of an intermodal freight network and the location of intermodal hubs between the origins and the destinations, under delivery time constraints. The goal is to identify the mode choice patterns considering transport cost and emissions, and the effects of new emission regulations on network costs. We consider a network with marine terminals as the origins, inland intermodal terminals as the hubs, and fulfillment centers as the destinations. Freight transportation changes in the region of Stockholm lead municipalities to the need of finding ways to maintain and empower their current logistics role in the area. These changes are the operation of the future freight port in Norvik near Nynäshamn, the expansion of Stockholm leading to new freight transportation networks, and the extension of the double track line southern to Västerhaninge station. Haninge municipality is willing to keep the interest of existing companies in its land alive and perhaps increase its’ attractiveness by constructing an extension of the terminal in Jordbro. But before proceeding to that step, the municipality wants to investigate whether companies are aware of these changes and furthermore if they have plans for changing their current goods transportation patterns. It is also interested in finding out the factors that companies consider as the most important when they take decisions about their goods transportation plan. That way the municipality knows what is important for companies and can adjust the supply of infrastructure to their demands. The main method used for data collection is designing and conducting a questionnaire and for data analysis it is multi-criteria analysis (MCA). The questionnaire also includes questions about the nature of the company and the current ways of goods transportation. Although the number of responders is quite low, some general conclusions could be made. There are two alternatives competing and multi-criteria analysis leads to the selection of the most suitable one. There are several limitations and assumptions which can be overcome by further future research.

Models for a Carbon Constrained, Reliable Biofuel Supply Chain Network Design and Management

This dissertation studies two important problems in the field of biomass supply chain network. In the first part of the dissertation, we study the impact of different carbon regulatory policies such as carbon cap, carbon tax, carbon cap-and-trade and carbon offsetmechanism on the design and management of a biofuel supply chain network under both deterministic and stochastic settings. These mathematical models identify locations and production capacities for biocrude production plants by exploring the trade-offs that exist between transportations costs, facility investment costs and emissions. The model is solved using a modified L-shaped algorithm. We used the state of Mississippi as a testing ground for our model. A number of observations are made about the impact of each policy on the biofuel supply chain network. In the second part of the dissertation, we study the impact of intermodal hub disruption on a biofuel supply chain network. We present mathematical model that designs multimodal transportation network for a biofuel supply chain system, where intermodal hubs are subject to site-dependent probabilistic disruptions. The disruption probabilities of intermodal hubs are estimated by using a probabilistic model which is developed using real world data. We further extend this model to develop a mixed integer nonlinear program that allocates intermodal hub dynamically to cope with biomass supply fluctuations and to hedge against natural disasters. We developed a rolling horizon based Benders decomposition algorithm to solve this challenging NP-hard problem. Numerical experiments show that this proposed algorithm can solve large scale problem instances to a near optimal solution in a reasonable time. We applied the models to a case study using data from the southeast region of U.S. Finally, a number of managerial insights are drawn into the impact of intermodal-related risk on the supply chain performance.

The study uses a dataset compiled through online research and interviews with market players. The identified market players include intermodal operators, railway carriers, terminals, and ports.
