Tids- och kostnadseffektivitet vid intermodala transporter / Time and cost efficiency within intermodal transportation

Ahlnäs, Simon, Börjesson, Tobias January 2017 (has links)
This study aims to explore effectiveness within intermodal transportation of semi-trailers based on the variables cost and time. Intermodal transport can be explained as a transportation of a carrier, from the origin to the final destination, using two or more modes of transport (Crainic & Kim, 2007 p.467). This study focuses on the two modes of transport rail and road. The rail transportation has big advantages towards other modes of transport since it has less impact on the environment, given that the energy is produced in Sweden (Trafikverket 2017) but there are more benefits to be utilized. The rail transportation is generally more profitable on distances greater than 500 km, thus it can transport high volumes of goods over long distances for a low cost. The fixed costs that´s added in the terminals and the rail transports low degree of flexibility compared to the road transport is the primary reasons why rail transportation isn´t profitable on shorter distances. This study has made a market research to see where the final destinations for the imported semi-trailers are located in Sweden and Norway. This, to see where there are potential to develop and create new rail shuttles from Port of Gothenburg to dry ports across the Swedish and Norwegian inland for transportation of semi-trailers. Interviews have been conducted with carriers to create a more correct view of the current situation. Study results show that the greatest volumes of the transported semi-trailers ends up in the areas around Helsingborg and Stockholm, with the region around Gothenburg excluded. Dry ports positioned in this area show the best potential for development of new rail shuttles. The results from conducted interviews with carriers express that time is the most important aspect for their operation and their clients, that is also the reason why they don´t use the railway for transportation of semi-trailers. Carriers also consider the trains to be unreliable and the railway operation in Port of Gothenburg has so far not been operating well enough for them. The result show that 38 percent of the imported semi-trailers have their final destination in the area around Gothenburg and naturally it´s not possible for the railway to compete with the road transport at such a short distance. In order for the railway to compete with the road transport, rail shuttles to regions with high flows of semi-trailers must be developed to not loose in time and flexibility. Thus, the railway transportation has other opportunities than just transportation. In dry ports there are opportunities for storage of goods, which is generally cheaper than in the port and simultaneously create time gains in the final transportation, thus the goods are closer to the customer. Port of Gothenburg can compete with other ports, which are geographically closer to a certain customer, through more rail shuttles with more frequent departures and then take more market shares within Nordic transportation.

Low carbon logistics: evaluating the efficiency of modal cabotage in long distance transportation.

Rodrigues, Edmilson Roberto 20 December 2018 (has links)
This study estimates and compares CO2 emissions between the two modalities of intermodal transport most used in Brazil for cargo with origin and destination to the municipality of Manaus, State of Amazonas. The first is called door-to-door cabotage, has the container as a transport unit and is characterized by the use of river and/or ocean navigation as the main modality, complemented by trucks for the road sections at the origin and destination. The second mode is the combination of the fluvial and road modal, known in the Brazilian market as a fluvial highway. In this modality, the transport unit is usually the trailer, which travels part of the route on a barge (river sections) and another part connected to a tractor (road sections). Through the application of the energy-based or activity-based approach, it was possible to compare the emissions in a very comprehensive way. In the literature there are several studies that highlight the efficiency of the waterway modal in relation to the road modal. However, these studies analyze emissions without considering all the steps involved, such as pick-up and delivery and port handling. Thus, these studies may be failing to compute significant amounts of emissions when making such comparisons. In this study, the comparison contemplates all the steps and allows that when analyzing the results, we can understand exactly at which stage of the process the emissions are more significant. The results obtained indicate a clear environmental advantage of the modal cabotage door-to-door, emitting up to 40% less CO2 than the combined fluvial and road modal in the stretch between Manaus and São Paulo. Similarly, it is also shown to be more efficient even in smaller distances, such as between Manaus and Recife, where the emissions in the door-to-door cabotage are 54% lower than the alternative (fluvial-road) modal. When compared to purely road routes, such as between Porto Alegre and Recife, the door-to-door cabotage emits 63% less CO2 than the alternative modal.

Alternativas de transporte rodo-marítimo na distribuição de cargas frigoríficas no Brasil / Road-waterway transportation alternatives in the distribution of reefer cargo in Brazil

Rorato, Rafael José 22 August 2003 (has links)
This research investigates transportation alternatives between industries and distribution centers by evaluating the possible advantages of the road-waterway intermodal transport of ISO containers and the use of a LCV-Long Combination Vehicle of the 3S3B3 type – a tractor plus two semi-trailers linked by a B-train connection and 74t of GVW, in relation to the present roadway house-to-house operating scenario using a five axles semi-trailer of the 2S3 type and 41,5t of GVW. Using a Geographic Information System (TransCAD) the fleet size and the operating costs of the transportation network are calculated. For different alternative scenarios tolls charged by the brasilian private road administration partnership and current port rates are used in the model, and served as the basis to elaborate the thematic maps, minimum cost routes and costs per transported ton. From the analysis of the results it is concluded that the intermodal road-waterway alternative, associated to the transport of containers to the ports and from the ports to the distribution centers using the 3S3B3 with two container flatbeds, offers potencial economic gains in relation to the present technology using the house-to-house road transport with the 2S3 and a reefer trailer for 26 PBR pallets. It is also concluded that the 3S3B3 technology with 2 reefer units and capacity of 40 PBR pallets offers an alternative to the transportation industry that outperforms the road-waterway intermodal integration on most studied routes.

Sobre o transporte público em Natal e região metropolitana / Over the public transportation at Natal and the metropolitan area

Moraes, Cida Cristina de Sousa 09 April 2002 (has links)
The system of transportation urban is an essential sector in the cities. L'intermodalité-voyageurs au prisme de la mondialisation : vers la structuration d'un méta-réseau intégré / Passenger intermodality and globalization : the path towards an integrated meta-network

Ageron, Pierre 14 June 2013 (has links)
Globalization sees world as a pertinent scale in the analysis of growing mobilities. Defined as network system, passenger intermodality seeks to improve transcalar trips and is thought as a tool for a new mobility paradigm : from a monomodal networks multiplicity to the meta-network integration, thanks to places of interchange, linking scales. Taking world as a whole, this study is primarily focused on passenger intermodality related to airport ground access. Indeed, airports, linking cities, regions and the world reveal the burning issues and stakes of a potential integrated intermodal network. Thought as a worldwide system, based upon gateway-status airports, this new meta-network doesn’t materialize. Still highly fragmented, dominant dynamics are macro-regional ones, which lead networks and services integration. The networks emergence drifts from a pioneering source : Rhinelander model, either imitated (Europe, Americas) or perfected (Eastern Asia). Three features define this model : making the use of networks easy for users from the start to the end thanks to interchanges. Secondly, actors adopt a broad systemic and territorial viewpoint. Customer’s needs and path are thought as a whole. Third, rules of (de)regulated markets demand innovation. Passenger intermodality is concerned with territorial marketing strategies within a globalization made of competition between metropolises. Regarded as a marketed product, intermodality produces interdependences between system’s actors then discovered. Optimal gestion makes intermodal system success, as proven by german model. At last, we underline complexity of passenger intermodality, linking three facets of globalization : by networks (including services), by speeches and pictures, by entrepreneurial strategies. Passenger intermodality, as a prism for globalization dynamics, is a mean to think of key concepts of geography and social sciences: place, individual, world.

Estimativa da redução das emissões gases de efeito estufa através da intermodalidade no setor sucroenergético: uma aplicação de programação linear / Estimating greenhouse gas emission reductions through a diversification in transportation systems in the sugarcane industry: applying a linear programming system

Pinheiro, Maria Andrade 19 April 2012 (has links)
Global warming is a major and growing concern around the world, with governments and environmentalists intensifying studies involving measures aimed at minimizing the effects of greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. Among major sectors, transportation is the second largest energy user and it remains highly dependent on fossil fuels that emit high amounts of CO2. The sugarcane industry is an important source of export revenues for Brazil: while total revenues for 2010 reached US$ 25 billion, about US$ 13.8 billion of that was generated by exports. Sugar is a key agricultural product on the Brazilian export agenda, with about 70% of production shipped to other countries. Ethanol, also produced from sugarcane, is a major ingredient of the countrys energy mix, which can also minimize emissions through its lifecycle by up to 90% compared to gasoline, its main competitor at the pump. Given the importance of transportation in greenhouse gas emissions and the possibility of diversifying transportation systems to achieve emission reductions, the goal of this thesis is to estimate the benefits the sugar-energy industry of reducing CO2 emissions through a diversification of transportation methods utilized by the industry. A methodology that relies on linear programming was used, aimed at optimization in order to minimize emissions and transportation costs. GAMS, a widely used software in linear programming, was utilized to construct four different scenarios for both products. Scenarios one and two covered the 2010/2011 harvest and considered the current transportation network, the difference being that scenario one considered a fixed cargo ceiling and various transport modes while scenario two, the cargo ceiling was eliminated. The idea was to arrive at an ideal configuration in both economic and environmental terms, considering no structural or infrastructure obstacles to more intense utilization of different modes of transport. Scenarios three and four relied on a long-range estimate for the 2020/2021 sugarcane harvest, the main difference between the two models being that model three is based on the same infrastructure that currently exists while model four considers an expansion of possible routes involving various transport modes that could be used, considering all transportation-related projects launched by private contractors and the federal government, including those that are a part of the governments Accelerated Growth Plans I and II, also known as PAC. The results point to a tradeoff between costs and emissions, when the results of minimizing emissions and costs within the same scenario are compared. However, when results between the proposed scenarios are pitted against one another, it can be concluded that it is possible to cut costs as well as emissions for both sugar and ethanol. In the 2020/2021 harvest, the simple possibility of utilizing a variety of road transport modes that dont involve road transportation would allow for a 6.6 million ton reduction in CO2 emissions, with a R$3.3 billion savings in cost of shipping sugar and ethanol. Mitigation through change transportation mode changes could finally insert the industry in carbon markets, while conquering markets where a greater concern with sustainability already exists.

Kundcentrerade miljöåtgärder - En studie av Pan Nordic Logistics kunders krav på miljövänliga transporter : Customer centered environmental measures - A study of Pan Nordic Logistics customers demand for environment-friendly transport

Ericson, Frida January 2008 (has links)
<p>Traditional product features such as price, quality and supply service have been extended and nowadays includes environmental aspects as well. It raises new and increasing demands on haulier companies. The transport sector is responsible for a large part of the pollutants causing today’s environmental problems. The business is being closely monitored and to operate environmental friendly is seen as one of the most important elements for the industry’s future development. Haulier companies must not only meet the restrictions of the government, but also respond to the customers’ demands on</p><p>environmental performance.</p><p>The aim of the study is to review the environmental demands of PNLs present customers and what they think their demands will look like in three years time. The scope of the survey is two-fold. The study will partly review if the changing environmental aspects can impact on supply service and price; and partly investigate the importance of an environmental certification. To reach the aim of the study qualitative interviews have been carried out with nine of PNLs present customers. The choice of customers has been made to represent</p><p>an overall picture of PNLs customer portfolio.</p><p>The study concluded that supply service and price is more important than environmental aspects today. The customers are prone to compromise on delivery time and price to the advantage of the environment. But it can not cost too much or take too long, and there must be a possible choice of transport.</p><p>There are today no expressed environmental demands on transport, but the conclusion is that it is only a matter of time before they will prevail. The results prove that environmental issues are estimated to be fundamental for hauliers in the future. It is seen as a competitive advantage to be at the leading edge of offering green transportation alternatives.</p><p>It is considered important today that hauliers pursue environmental issues aggressively. A certification according to ISO or other environmental management systems is considered less important. The results show that environmental management systems and an operative environmental framework will increase in importance in the future when choosing between hauliers.</p>

Λαζανάς, Αλέξης 27 April 2009 (has links)
This PhD thesis refers to a specific area of Information Systems called E-Market Systems. More specifically, it represents an attempt to integrate hybrid Recommendation techniques as well as data mining methods, encapsulating them at the same time, into an intermodal transportation transactions management framework, through the exploitation of innovative internet technologies. Taking into consideration the urgent need for the development of innovative intermodal transportations management systems, this thesis presents analytically all the phases of the development of such a system. The proposed system accepts requests for transportation transactions and is capable of constructing direct or modular transportation solutions exploiting suitable Operation Research Algorithms. The system encapsulates hybrid recommendation techniques – aiming at providing a high level of information to the involved users. Moreover, this thesis proposes an innovative hybrid recommendation model which combines recommendation methods and data mining techniques. The development of the above model, aims at facing up the problems that rise by the use of the recommendation methods mentioned before and at the enhancement of the provided services. In the proposed system, an agents’ community participate and interact with each others, through well defined communication protocols, with the responsibility of performing all the necessary tasks for the establishment of a transportation transaction. The proposed system is Web-based and implemented through the use of modern Web technologies.
