Recent years are marked by radical changes in communication modes. The diffusion of technologies allows users to become exposed to interpersonal violence, persecution and attacks that occur in the virtual environment, which features cyberbullying, defined as aggressive, intentional act carried out by a group or individual through electronic contacts. In order to describe and explore its manifestations as well as possible ways of coping, three texts were developed. The first aims to present and discuss the concept of cyberbullying from a research-based literature. The second article presents initial data from a survey of cyberbullying among Internet users (pilot study). The study enrolled 70 adolescents between 13-17 years of age (mean: 15.6 years; SD = 1.18). The most frequently mentioned types of cyberbullying were insults in online forums (20%); online publication of embarrassing picture without the permission of the person who appears in it (18.6%). The coping strategies identified as most effective were: remove the aggressor from the contact list (55.7%), tell parents / relatives (54.3%) and block the offender (52.9%). Finally, the third text seeks to analyze data from an online survey study conducted with 453 teenagers between 13 and 17 years, living in the city of Juiz de Fora-MG. Among the participants, 67.3% reported at least one incident of cyber aggression and 63.8% reported at least one episode of cyber victimization in the last six months, and 78.6% scored at least one point in the overall score, or be victims or perpetrators. Both strategies identified by participants as more effective in dealing with cyberbullying were blocking the offender (81%) and remove the offender from the contact list (84%). The quantitative and qualitative results are presented, analyzed and discussed based on the available literature, in order to contribute to scientific knowledge, and provide practical implications and a better understanding of the phenomenon in Brazilian scene.

Click to act? the (de) mobilizing effect of expressive low-threshold online collective actions :motivational underpinnings and contextual boundaries

Schumann, Sandy 12 June 2014 (has links)
Previous research highlighted that Internet use, in particular online information<p>retrieval and discussions, can facilitate offline collective actions (Boulianne, 2009).<p>Recently, however, the Internet also has been criticized for encouraging low-cost and lowrisk<p>online collective actions—slacktivism—that may have detrimental consequences for<p>groups that aim to achieve a collective purpose (Gladwell, 2010). More precisely, it is<p>argued that actions such as “liking” Facebook pages or posting ingroup-endorsing<p>comments online make users instantly feel good, satisfy their need to act, and derail<p>participation in offline collective actions (Lee & Hsieh, 2013; Morozov, 2009).<p>In my thesis, I assessed this postulation as well as the underlying processes and<p>boundary conditions of the relationship between so-called slacktivist actions and offline<p>collective actions. After introducing a conceptualization of slacktivism as expressive lowthreshold<p>online collective actions, I investigated its influence on offline engagement<p>(Study 1, N = 634; Study 2, N = 76; Study 3, N = 63; Study 4, N = 48). Results indicated that<p>expressive low-threshold online collective actions reduce the willingness to join offline<p>collective actions. This effect was mediated by the satisfaction of group-enhancing<p>motives; members considered the online actions as a substantial contribution to the<p>group's success. The demobilizing impact of expressive low-threshold online collective<p>actions was qualified when members took the online actions in the co-presence of the<p>ingroup, all parties being mutually identifiable (Study 5a, N = 84; Study 5b, N = 99). In this<p>context, obligatory interdependencies between members were enhanced and fostered a<p>spill-over from online to offline collective actions (Study 6, N = 62). / Doctorat en Sciences Psychologiques et de l'éducation / info:eu-repo/semantics/nonPublished

Aplikace pro odhalování sledování aktivit uživatelů na internetu / Application for revealing internet trackers

Ďopan, Lukáš January 2013 (has links)
Tracking Internet users is one of the most controversial and discussed IT topic nowadays. Except of the publicly known tracking by marketing agencies, there even appeared secret methods of surface monitoring of USA population. Because, as shown in this thesis, majority of existing tools for defence against tracking on the Internet are cooperating with trackers, the goal of this thesis is to develop independent defend tool that would block tracking. After mentioning the motivation for tracking and its history there are analysed all known and widespread tracking methods in detail. The two following sections of the thesis are describing the world biggest companies performing the user tracking and their tools and options to defend against each method of tracking by available defensive tools. The practical part of the thesis contains the description, example of usage and manual for developed defensive tool, that protects users on the Internet against the most widespread tracking methods by restricting communication with suspicious 3-rd party servers.

Vylepšení rozšíření pro omezení volání JavaScriptu / JavaScript Restricting Web Extension

Timko, Martin January 2019 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to functionally expand the browser extension prototype created by Ing. Zbyněk Červinka, focused on the privacy protection of the user during his web browsing. Acquired facts about the function of existing tools for safety and privacy protection, such as technology JavaScript Zero, were used in the solution, which was created by employing a technique of encapsulating JavaScript objects and functions. This allows greater anonymity and safety for users during web browsing. The extension was tested and published under the title JavaScript Restrictor. The main benefit of this thesis is the increase of safety from attacks and increase of anonymity linked to the user data harvesting.

Who is Really in Charge Here: An Exploration of the Formation and Empowerment of Opinion Leaders in a Reddit Gaming Community

Carter, Clinton Chase 12 1900 (has links)
In an attempt to shed light on the further sophistication of opinion leadership in online communities, this study examined the forces and structures that affect their formation in the League of Legends subreddit. By investigating what users thought about the various types of individuals with which the communicate, the researcher hoped to begin to understand and record how those forces work bother on this particular subreddit and in mass media beyond. Opinion leadership continues to be an integral force in deciding what information is consumed by a public and under what frames and agendas it is contextualized. If researchers can operationalize formal definitions for the influences and structures that occur online, they can better navigate the deep waters that are global communication on the internet.

On-line friendships

Zaczek, Dominika 28 February 2004 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to investigate the prevalence and quality of on-line friendships, to find which individual characteristics differentiate people who look for and form on-line friendship(s) from those who don't, and to discover factors which are of importance for the development of on-line friendship(s). 574 Internet users completed an on-line questionnaire. The results showed that: (1) almost 50% of respondents had on-line friendship(s); (2) off-line friendships were better developed than on-line friendships. However, there was only a minor difference between the quality of the best off-line and best on-line friendships; (3) the Internet was a safe place for building personal relationships, especially for shy individuals; (4) people who felt lonely were more likely to turn to the Internet to find friends; (5) Internet usage and attitudes to the Internet were significant factors that differentiated those who looked for and formed friendship(s) on-line from those who didn't. / Psychology / M.A. (Psychology)

An investigation of Internet usage among a group of professionals in South Africa : a uses and gratifications approach

Gilbert, Juliet Francis 07 1900 (has links)
New mass media impact on the nature of public communication and the use and gratification of existing mass media because each new medium is used and experienced differently. As a new mass medium, the Internet offers different forms of communication, such as Internet Relay Chat, Multi-User Dungeons and chatrooms. It has also combined traditional mass media, namely print, radio and television, into a single powerful medium. Due to the fact that the Internet is still an emerging medium, its long-term effects on the nature of public communication and traditional mass media warrants ongoing investigation. The first part (Part A) of this dissertation situates the Internet chronologically within the development of traditional mass media and their impact on public communication. Part B investigates Internet use among a group of professionals in South Africa. The objective is to identify how they use the Internet and the gratification they derive from it. / Communication Science / M.A. (Communication)
