A Battle for Righteousness: Jimmy Carter and Religious Nationalism

January 2013 (has links)
abstract: Time magazine called 1976 "the year of the evangelical" partly in response to the rapid political ascent of the previously little-known Georgia governor Jimmy Carter. A Sunday school teacher and deacon in his local church, Carter emphasized the important role of faith in his life in a way that no presidential candidate had done in recent memory. However, scholarly assessments of Carter's foreign policy have primarily focused on his management style or the bureaucratic politics in his administration. This study adds to the growing literature in American diplomatic history analyzing religion and foreign policy by focusing on how Carter's Christian beliefs and worldview shaped his policymaking and how his religious convictions affected his advisors. To better demonstrate this connection, this dissertation primarily discusses Carter's foreign policy vis-à-vis religious nationalist groups of the three Abrahamic faiths (Judaism, Christianity, Islam). By drawing on archival materials from the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library, Carter's own voluminous writings, and memoirs of other administration officials, this dissertation argues that Carter's religious values factored into policymaking decisions, although sometimes in a subtle fashion due to his strong Baptist doctrinal commitment to the separation of church and state. Moreover, Carter's initial success in using his religious beliefs in the Camp David negotiations raised expectations among administration officials and others when crises arose, such as the hostage taking in Iran and the electoral threat of the Christian Right. Despite his success at Camp David, invoking religious values can complicate situations already fraught with sacred symbolism. Ultimately, this dissertation points to the benefits and limits of foreign policy shaped by a president with strong public religious convictions as well as the advantages and pitfalls of scholars examining the impact of religion on presidential decision making. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. History 2013

A diluição do autor na trilogia de Koker de Abbas Kiarostami / The Dilution of Authorship in the Koker Trilogy by Abbas Kiarostami

Daniel Marcolino Claudino de Sousa 19 April 2012 (has links)
This work aims to build an aesthetic analysis of Koker Trilogy, by Abbas Kiarostami, specially the film Through the Olive Trees. It investigates the effects of meta-language procedures in cinema, when a film inside another one breaks the linear sequence in order to produce a relational aesthetic communication with the spectators. This opens space for the perception of different levels of reality. This discussion is also related to the topic of the death or dissolution of the authorship, as it is understood in the works of Derrida, Foucault and Barthes. By extension, the ideas of end of narrative are also considered in the analysis. In this sense, it looks after the modern author, created, according to Adorno, since Cervantes Don Quixote: the absolute author, who does not know the destiny of his/her characters and, because of it, includes resources (even meta-linguistic) that put in evidence aspects of verisimilitude to make it believable. In this discussion, some questions related to the end of narrative and of art, the reception of Iranian cinema and the puzzlement of documental and fictitious registers appear. At end, it discusses the possibilities of telling a history in contemporaneity.

Forough Farrokhzâd et la poésie française du XIXe siècle : pour une analyse comparée à travers la métaphore / Forough Farrokhzad and French poets of 19th : for a comparative analysis through the metaphor

Lotfinia, Tahereh 10 March 2016 (has links)
This thesis presents the poetry of Forough Farrokhzad, an Iranian poet of 20th century. Our research indicates the fact that the contemporary Iranian poets have been attentive readers of the 19th and 20th century’s French poetry which played a crucial role in their openness to modernity. Through the study of Forough Farrokhzad’s poetry we analyze these relationships via metaphor. This figure of speech, very ancient and prevalent in Iranian poetry, defines a new presentation of the images in this precursor poet. This study about Forough also evokes the feminine poetry in Iranian literature whether in its ancient or contemporary creations.

Exploring Conspicuous Luxury Consumption In Iran: The Role Of Individual Factors and Consumer Knowledge

Kermani, Mohammad January 2017 (has links)
This research tested a conceptual model predicting the propensity to engage in two distinct forms of conspicuous consumption (bandwagon and snob consumption) that was developed by Kastanakis and Balabanis (2014) in a collectivistic Iranian context. This study found that this conceptual model was more successful in accounting for the variance in bandwagon consumption (i.e., conformity seeking conspicuous luxury consumption) than snob consumption (i.e., uniqueness seeking conspicuous luxury consumption) in the Iranian context. In addition to status seeking, it was found that consumer susceptibility to normative influence (CSNI) and consumer need for uniqueness (CNFU) mediates the influence of self-concept on bandwagon consumption. This finding suggests that the relationship between snob consumption and CNFU may differ in the Iranian context. Results also show that the relationships between CSNI, unpopular counter choice conformity (a sub-construct of CNFU) and status seeking with bandwagon consumption were all negatively moderated by consumer knowledge for fashion luxury goods. These findings extend the original conspicuous consumption model and provide some insight for the development of marketing strategies in Iran.

This research aims to analyze how the realism emerge in the iranian film The Mirror, through three main concepts: ambiguity, time and attention. These concepts will be think from the perspective of three different authors. The first of them, the critic André Bazin, will give us the basis to think the ambiguity through his studies of Italian Neorealism. The second author is Gilles Deleuze, who proposes the birth of a new image characterized primarily by its relationship with the time. And Jorge Larrosa, who, through his study about the concept of experience and attention, help us to think the relationship between reality-movie-viewer. From these perspectives, we will try to see the narrative particularities of The Mirror in its relationship with the viewer, also entering the film in a broader discussion of the realism in cinema.

Writing new identities: The portrayal of women by female authors of the Middle East

MILADI, NEDA 16 May 2018 (has links)
Since the Islamic Revolution of 1979, a distinct female voice has emerged in Persian fictional literature which has ventured beyond the established feminine stereotype of male literary tradition, and remarkably valorized female identities through focusing on interests and concerns of Iranian women, from feminist issues to social and political problems to cultural and moral dilemmas. This body of literature that has been gradually developed, tries to reflect realistic depictions of female protagonists with emotional, intellectual, and moral complexity. To study this progressive process, this research has focused on characterization of seven female protagonists that have been created by different generations of Iranian female authors in the genre of novel.
