A fruitful bough : the Old Testament story of Joseph in medieval and Golden Age Spanish literature

Patterson, Charles P. 16 October 2012 (has links)
The Old Testament story of Joseph is common to the Christians, Muslims, and Jews of medieval Spain, and each group drew upon its own and other exegetical traditions to produce literary versions of the biblical tale. After the expulsion of the latter two groups, several Hispanic playwrights, including such notable figures as Lope de Vega, Pedro Calderón de la Barca, and Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, continued to produce theatrical versions of the Josephine legend throughout the Golden Age. Most of these plays attained a great deal of popularity. In spite of the importance of these works in early Spanish culture, recent scholarship has paid comparatively little attention to them. The present study is meant to remedy that situation. By drawing upon the theoretical concepts of Edward Said, Amin Maalouf, Jonathan Z. Smith, and others regarding identity and Otherness, I demonstrate how each adaptation of the story constructs or evaluates religious and national identity. Medieval prose and poetic adaptations written by representatives of each of the three monotheistic faiths reveal an attempt to maintain the boundaries of religious identity within a multicultural context. Sixteenth-century theatrical versions deal with the post-expulsion identity crisis by proposing a more inclusive attitude towards New Christians. Finally, under the Baroque influence of the late seventeenth century, adaptations of the Joseph story become increasingly metatheatrical. This literary self-reflection serves to interrogate the nature of identity and reveal its constructedness. Given the importance of identity issues in current scholarship, this analysis suggests the need for increased critical attention to be paid to the Spanish Josephine tradition. / text

Das Eklektizismus-Problem der Philosophiegeschichte

Schneider, Ulrich Johannes 23 September 2014 (has links) (PDF)

Charreire, Magali 06 December 2013 (has links)
A novelist, writer, scholar and book-lover, Paul Lacroix, aka bibliophile Jacob (1806-1884), went through the nineteenth century as both a writer-journalist and a librarian at the Bibliothèque de l’Arsenal from 1855 on. Influenced by the deep changes affecting both historiography and literature, in which in actively participated and the obsessions of its times nurtured by the romantic movement, his abundant and multifaceted work tried to melt the historian’s and the novelist’s approaches, materialised by the mysterious, clever pen name, the token of his success in 1830. Under the July Monarchy, he undertook to take an inventory of the French historical past; his writings were submitted to the fluctuating possible modalities provided by the narrative as well as the economic imperatives resulting from the transformations of bookshops and libraries. Though his works did not try to set up a closed and coherent system, which was illustrated by the race for the ultimate roman-histoire, they questioned French people’s relationship with time, which was seriously undermined by the Revolution. The so-called « French Walter Scott » followed the taste for the Middle-Ages and wrote historical novels thatreminded one of the specialists of the Antiquity and contributed to founding a narrative of the origins based on a speculative approach of history. His historical narratives is pervaded with fictionalised cameos crystallising the colours, plots and pitfall of both medieval and modern times, separated by a porous border, thus questioning the consequences of the French Revolution. The two faces of those cameos paved the way for a rearrangement of historical time/events.

It was the work through which Paulo Jacob achieved to overcome some regional barriers and made an appearance at a national level. Based on documentary regionalism, he represents a typology of Amazonian man from his disappointments and his fight against poverty, from his beliefs and culture. This research, when investigating the intertextuality, has as its general objective to track an Amazonian library which should have exercised power of modeling over the writing for Chuva branca, as well as trying showing specifically: that the themes about Amazon reality which appear with expressiveness come from the Amazon riverside, that is, man in Amazon, poverty, imagery, sacred, and indigenous culture; that, although intertexts cannot always be of easy detection, it is possible to make inter-textual relations with works belonging to the Amazon library, probable readings of Paulo Jacob, as in the case of some works linked to Sociology and Anthropology; that Paulo Jacob’s discursive construction, by trying to represent the man in Amazon from his dramas and fights, ended up having documentary nature with the objective of divulgating the culture and showing a significant part of an isolated and unknown region; that reading Chuva branca nowadays, about 50 years later, it known that between the novel’s horizon of expectation and our reading there are profound economic, historic, and social changes that took place not only in Amazon reality but also in world reality. This fact shows that the Amazon which was represented in Chuva branca is certainly less isolated and rural, as well as is permeated by technology and by the urbanization, and the reader’s look about the novel, while going through the timeframe, was renovated. It has to be said that my research is substantiated on the aesthetic reception theory, linked to Hans Robert Jauss and Wolfgang Iser, its main exponents. Obviously, the research do not remain itself within all limits of methodology suggested by this theory, but relates to it through some key concepts, such as horizon of expectation and fusion of horizons. Finally, I defend that what some author of the Amazonian library, such as sociologists and anthropologists, make with their sciences with respect to the documentation of the Amazonian man and his conditions, Paulo Jacob makes it through the representation, through the discursive construction, and his characters. He ends up divulgating to Brazil a significant part of its own face.

Steyn

Van der Merwe, Willem Petrus 11 1900 (has links)
This research is based on the theory that the texts in the oeuvre of certain writers are related to each other in such a way that one can read and experience them as a unity. Using Derrida's concept of the genealogical relationship of texts as a point of departure, I have examined those intertextual relationships in J.C. Steyn's oeuvre in which his radio play, poetry and prose texts have developed to a complicated fabric. It soon becomes clear that two main streams emerge in Steyn's texts: a motif of personal defect which percolates to a larger social group. Already in "Die skuldige: 'n hoorspel" (1974) the homoerotic disposition of the central figure is closely related to the socio-economic problems of the family who lose all their material possessions. The poems in the first half of Die grammatika van liefhe (1975) are characterised by the poetic personality's strong aversion to his own imperfections; in the final part, his personal concern about the Afrikaner and the continued existence of Afrikaans emerge. From Op pad na die grens (1976), through Dagboek van 'n verraaier (1978) and Die verlore vader (1985), up to and including Hoeke Boerseuns ons was (1991), the main streams of Steyn's texts become more clearly discernible: on the one hand, one encounters the national concerns in which Steyn develops themes found in C.J. Langenhoven's Die pad van Suid-Afrika and follows the Afrikaner's struggle for survival to the present juncture; on the other hand, the characters of his texts struggle with personal difficulties such as a propensity to homoeroticism to which they cannot reconcile themselves. An overarching concern of Steyn's is the story of the Afrikaans Everyman who, as a result of conflicting socio-political influences, increasingly finds himself in a state of sorrow, confusion and spiritual collapse. Finally, I reveal how Steyn exposes himself and the Afrikaner in his texts by means of defictionalisation. Its influence is beneficial: at a personal level, it is purifying and is the impetus of Steyn's art; and, in the case of the Afrikaner, it fulfils the role of the Afrikaner's collective conscience. / Afrikaans & Theory of Literature / D. Spanning stad/land soos vergestalt in die poësie van S.J. Pretorius

Gerber, Engela-Laura January 1992 (has links)
The tension that exists between country and city is a characteristic theme of the poetry of S.J. Pretorius. In particular, he deals with the "physical-concrete" destiny of the Afrikaans speaking people of the platteland in the city, Johannesburg. Images of a "beautiful and healthy" countryside are contrasted with the "dejected" city, full of tedium and misery. The negative portrayal of the latter serves to heighten the tension between the two. The year 1953 marks a slight change in attitude. From then on the poet accepts the city as part of the Afrikaner identity and strives to find the country within the city. The former is no longer idealized in a nostalgic way. Instead, the poet exposes the hollowness of the Christian promise of salvation in the face of urban poverty and tribulation. / Afrikaans & Theory of Literature / M.A. (Afrikaans)
