The new within the given : collage principles and processes in contemporary painting

Collage is presented as an allegoric art-form sui generis, considering allegory itself as an open-ended form of art. The research provides a suggestion to a different understanding of collage i.e.: as a catalyst for a search for structure and semiotic relationships in an attempt to overcome a constant disordered expansion of an intertextual web and hermeneutic possibilities; and as an open work, providing multi-layered meanings. As an open work collage is typified by the prominent role of its "readers", its ambiguity and the infinite net of references it summons. Collage may be conceived as a bridge between modernism and postmodernism, structuralism and post-structuralism; as a model for constant innovation and suppleness; as a stimulator for meta-artistic questions, acceptance of "soft" universals and reevaluation of the role of the Other within an artwork. A Multibiomarker Analysis of Pollutant Effects on Atlantic Stingray Populations in Florida’s St. Johns River

The goal of this study was to examine the potential health effects of organochlorine (OC) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) exposure on Atlantic stingray populations in Florida’s St. Johns River (SJR). Special emphasis was placed on identifying OC- and/or PAH-related effects in stingrays from areas of the lower (LSJR) and middle (MSJR) basins shown to possess elevated levels of these compounds, as well as characterizing baseline levels of pollutant exposure in the SJR shipping channel, which may be subjected to dredging in the near future, potentially resuspending and redistributing contaminated sediments and increasing pollutant-associated effects. To accomplish this, we measured OC and PAH biomarker levels in stingrays collected from contaminated and reference sites. We specifically examined the phase I detoxification enzyme, cytochrome P4501a1 (CYP1a1); the phase II detoxification enzymes, glutathione-S-transferase (GST) and uridine 5’-diphosphate glucuronosyltransferase (UGT); fluorescent aromatic compounds, PAH bile metabolites; and lipid peroxidation (LPO), cell membrane damage. Biomarker values collected between 2014 and 2016 were compared by site. Detoxification enzyme activity and LPO values from individuals collected from the three MSJR lakes between 2002 and 2005 were compared to those collected between 2014 and 2016. The data suggested that biomarker values from the SJR were variable, with elevated levels from Lake Jesup. Compared to reference estuaries, the LSJR has low biomarker values. This indicates that residing in certain portions of the MSJR is detrimental to stingray health, while residing in the LSJR is not. Lake Monroe and Lake George biomarker levels indicated reduced contaminant input over time, whereas Lake Jesup biomarker levels suggested the opposite. This study has developed a baseline for biomarker levels in the LSJR, allowing for the identification of dredging-induced changes to the system, and has identified temporal changes in biomarker levels from three MSJR lakes.

Faith in Action: The First Citizenship School on Johns Island, South Carolina.

This thesis examines the first Citizenship School, its location, participants, and success. Johns Islanders, Esau Jenkins, Septima Clark, Myles Horton, Bernice Robinson, and the Highlander Folk School all collaborated to create this school. Why and how this success was reached is the main scope of this manuscript. Emphasis is also placed on the school's impact upon the modern Civil Rights Movement. Primary sources such as personal accounts, manuscripts, and archive collections were examined. Secondary sources were also researched for this manuscript. The conclusion reached from these sources is that faith was the driving force behind the success of the Citizenship School. The schools unlocked the chains of political, social, and economic disenfranchisement for Gullah Islanders and African Americans all over the South, greatly affecting the outcome of the Civil Rights Movement. African Americans, who had once been forced into second-class citizenship, now through faith and the vote, obtained first-class citizenship.

Analytical and Numerical Modeling of Long Term Changes to Tides, Storm Surge, and Total Water Level Due to Bathymetric Changes and Surge Characteristics

Natural and local anthropogenic changes in estuaries (e.g., sea-level rise, navigation channel construction and loss of wetlands) interact with each other and produce non-linear effects. There is also a growing recognition that tides in estuaries are not stationary. These factors together are changing the estuarine water level regime, however the implications for extreme water levels remain largely unknown. Changes over the past century in many estuaries, such as channel deepening and streamlining for navigation have significantly altered the hydrodynamics of long waves, often resulting in amplified tides (a ~85% increase in Wilmington, NC since 1900) and storm surge in estuaries. This research focuses on establishing analytical and numerical models that simulate a wide range of systems and flow conditions that combine multiple flood sources: astronomical tide, storm surge, and high river flow. To investigate the effects of estuarine bathymetry conditions (e.g., channel depth, convergence length), hurricane conditions (e.g., pressure and wind field), river discharge, and surge characteristics (e.g., time scale and amplitude and relative phase) on tide and storm surge propagation, I develop an idealized analytical model and two numerical models using Delft-3D. The Cape Fear River Estuary, NC (CFRE), and St Johns River Estuary, FL (SJRE) are used as case studies to investigate flood dynamics. The analytical approach has been compared and verified with idealized numerical models. I use data recovery, data analysis, and idealized numerical modeling of the CFRE to investigate the effects of bathymetric changes (e.g., dredging and channel modification) on tidal and storm surge characteristics over the past 130 years. Data analysis and modeling results suggest that long-term changes in tides can be used along with the tidal analysis tools to investigate changes in storm surge. Analysis indicate that tidal range in Wilmington, NC (Rkm 47) has doubled to 1.55m since the 1880s, while a much smaller increase of 0.07m observed close to the ocean in Southport (Rkm 6) since the 1920s. Further, model results suggest that the majority of long term changes in tides of this system have been caused by deepening the system from 7m to 15.5m due to dredging, rather than by changes in the coastal tides. Numerical modeling using idealized, parametric tropical cyclones suggests that the amplitude of the worst-case, CAT-5 storm surge has increased by 40-60% since the nineteenth century. Storm surges are meteorologically forced shallow water waves with time scales that overlap those of the tidal bands. Using data, I show that the surge wave can be decomposed into two sinusoidal waves. Therefore, I analytically model surge via a 3-constituent analytical tide model, where the third constituent is the dominant semi-diurnal tide and friction is linearized via Chebyshev polynomials. A constant discharge is considered to approximate fluvial effects The analytical model is used to study how surge amplitude, surge time scale, and surge-tide relative phase affect the spatial pattern of amplitude growth and decay, and how depth changes caused by channel deepening influence the magnitude of a storm surge. I use non-dimensional numbers to investigate how channel depth, surge time scale and amplitude, surge asymmetry, and relative timing of surge to tides alter the damping or amplification of surge along the estuary. The non-dimensional numbers suggest that increasing depth has similar effects as decreasing the drag coefficient. Similarly, larger time scale has an equivalent effect on tide and surge as increasing depth due to channel deepening. Analytical model results show that the extent of the surge amplification is dependent on the geometry of the estuary (e.g., depth and convergence length) and characteristics of the surge wave. Both models show that much of the alterations of water levels in estuaries is due to channel deepening for navigation purposes and that the largest temporal change occur for surges with a high surge to D2 amplitude ratio and a short time scale. Model results farther indicate that surge amplitude decays more slowly (larger e-folding) in a deeper channel for all surge time scales (12hr-72hr). Another main finding is that, due to nonlinear friction, the location of maximum change in surge wave moves landward as the channel is deepened. Thus, changes in flood risk due to channel deepening are likely spatially variable even within a single estuary. Next, I use the verified analytical model and numerical models to investigate the effects of river flow on surge wave propagation, and spatial and temporal variability of compound flooding along an estuary. To model the historic SJRE, I digitize nautical charts of SJRE to develop a numerical model. Both the numerical and analytical models are used to investigate the contribution of tide, surge, and river flow to the peak water level for historic and modern system configurations. Numerical modeling results for hurricane Irma (2017) show that maximum flood water levels have shifted landward over time and changed the relative importance of the various contributing factors in the SJRE. Deepening the shipping channel from 5.5m to 15m has reduced the impacts of river flow on peak water level, but increased the effects of tide and surge. Sensitivity studies also show that peak water level decreases landward for all river flow scenarios as channel depth increases. Model results show that the timing of peak river flow relative to the time of maximum surge causes very large changes in the amplitude of total water level, and in river flow effects at upstream locations for modern configuration than for the historic model. Changes in surge amplitudes can be interpreted by the non-dimensional friction number, which shows that depth (h), surge time scale (T=1/w), and convergence length-scale (Le) affect the damping/amplification of both tides and surge waves. Overall, this study demonstrates that a system scale alteration in local storm surge dynamics over the past century is likely to have occurred in many systems and should be considered for system management. The results of this research give the scientists and engineer a better understanding of tide, river flow, and surge interactions, and thereby contribute to an understanding of how to predict storm surges and help mitigate their destructive impacts. Future system design studies also need to consider long-term and changes of construction and development activities on storm surge risk in a broader context than has historically been the case.

The decades after World War II were a time of growth and change for queer people across the country. Many chose to move to major metropolitan centers in order to pursue a life of openness and be part of queer communities. However, those people only account for part of the story of queer history. Other queer people chose to stay in small towns and create their own queer spaces for socializing and community building. The Gulf Coast of Florida is a place where queer people chose to create queer community where they lived through such actions as private house parties and opening bars. The unique place of the Gulf Coast as a tourist destination allowed queer people to build and join communication networks that furthered the growth of a sense of community leading ultimately to the founding of Bay AIDS Services and Information Coalition in 1989.

This dissertation is intended as an investigation into the art of Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg.The aim of thisinvestigation is to assess the possibility that the art produced by Johns and Rauschenberg during the 1950s and 1960s constitutes a transition from modernism to postmodernism in the visual arts in America. This dissertation is introduced by means of a broad outline of relevent developments within the visual arts during the1950s and 1960s in America. This outline also contains explanations of modernism and postmodernism and looks at how these terms are presented throughout this text. In the outline I describe how Johns and Rauschenberg can be identified with a shift that occurred in the visual arts in America during the mid 1950s away from two prominent modes of painting within modernism, namely' action' painting, as described by Harold Rosenberg (1982:28), and Clement Greenberg's 'American-type' painting (1973:208). Both Johns and Rauschenberg actively produced art during the 1970s and 1980s the period in which postmodernism is generally regarded to have been most prominent. However, in an attempt to assess the possibility that their art is transitional from modernism to postmodernism, this investigation focuses upon a selection of artworks produced during the 1950s and 1960s. I intend to discover whether or not these works signalled a departure from modernism and if they did, at what point this occurred and what the specific nature of this departure was. These works are examined from conceptual, formal, iconographical, stylistic and technical viewpoints. Throughout this dissertation I attempt to describe how Johns and Rauschenberg anticipated and embraced various postmodem tendencies that have subsequently emerged in the arts and other related disciplines. Parallels are drawn between the artworks of Johns and Rauschenberg and the disciplines of architecture and literary theory. These parallels are drawn with the intention of aligning Johns and Rauschenberg's attitude towards making art in the 1950s and 1960s with a relatively widespread mood in literary theory, philosophy and the social sciences concerning the inability of these disciplines to deliver totalising theories and doctrines, or enduring answers to fundamental dilemmas and puzzles posed by objects of inquiry, and a growing feeling, on the contrary, that chronic provisionality, plurality of perspectives and incommensurable appearances of the objects of inquiry in competing discourses make the search for ultimate answers or even answers that can command widespread consensus a futile exercise. State (hydrodynamics) Identification In The Lower St. Johns River Using The Ensemble Kalman Filter

This thesis presents a method, Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF), applied to a highresolution, shallow water equations model (DG ADCIRC-2DDI) of the Lower St. Johns River with observation data at four gauging stations. EnKF, a sequential data assimilation method for non-linear problems, is developed for tidal flow simulation for estimation of state variables, i.e., water levels and depth-integrated currents for overland unstructured finite element meshes. The shallow water equations model is combined with observation data, which provides the basis of the EnKF applications. In this thesis, EnKF is incorporated into DG ADCIRC-2DDI code to estimate the state variables. Upon its development, DG ADCIRC-2DDI with EnKF is first validated by implementing to a low-resolution, shallow water equations model of a quarter annular harbor with synthetic observation data at six gauging stations. Second, DG ADCIRC-2DDI with EnKF is implemented to a high-resolution, shallow water equations model of the Lower St. Johns River with real observation data at four gauging stations. Third, four different experiments are performed by applying DG ADCIRC-2DDI with EnKF to the Lower St. Johns River.

Groundwater Flow Across the Coyote Wash Fault and Cedar Mesa Anticline near St. Johns, Arizona

As the demand for water increases across the southwestern United States, the region's utilization of and dependence on water stored in groundwater aquifers has risen in kind. The Coconino Aquifer (C-aquifer) underlies much of the southwestern Colorado Plateau and is a primary source of groundwater in northeastern Arizona. One of the largest commercial users of water from the C-aquifer in Apache County, Arizona, is Springerville Generating Station, a coal-fired power plant owned and operated by Tucson Electric Power. The area surrounding the power plant, located between the cities of Springerville and St. Johns, Arizona (the Springerville-St. Johns area), is geologically complex: it contains the Cedar Mesa anticline, an underlying CO2 reservoir, extensive travertine deposits, and several faults, including the Coyote Wash fault. The Coyote Wash fault and Cedar Mesa anticline play a significant role in the relationships between the St. Johns CO2 gas field, groundwater flow, and the travertine deposits. Yet, the interaction between the structures and the effect they have on groundwater flow is poorly constrained. By mapping the subsurface geology utilizing borehole records and by creating a groundwater model of the area, this study determined that the Cedar Mesa anticline acts as a partial horizontal barrier to groundwater flow, whereas the Coyote Wash fault does not act as such a barrier. Particle tracking for the model indicates that despite the reduced water volume in the aquifer after decades of groundwater extraction, flow still occurs across the hinge of the Cedar Mesa anticline, accelerated by active pumping wells located west of the anticline axis. The model indicates that prior to the activation of the pumping wells, outflow from the C-aquifer would have occurred with greater frequency to Lyman Lake and along the extent of the Little Colorado River located downstream from the lake. The study also identified a zone of high hydraulic conductivity located between the Cedar Mesa anticline and the Coyote Wash fault that continues west of the Coyote Wash fault and may align with the Buttes anticline. This model of groundwater flow conditions improves the understanding of the complex subsurface geology and groundwater flow dynamics in the area.

Ceramics has always existed on the fringes of craft and high art. The purpose of this thesis project is to elevate clay beyond the traditions of craft by examining the historical use of clay and the everyday object. My research looks specifically at works by Marcel Duchamp, Andy Warhol, Jeff Koons and Jasper Johns in order to examine the origin of displaying the massproduced object and reflecting upon it’s validity as high status art object. In this project I am also interested in infrastructural systems within modern architecture-- plumbing, wiring, heat ducts vents-- with a specific focus on systems lurking inside walls and how these function to influence architectural space. With the advent of modern plumbing, concealing these elements was adopted as the new standard and still exists today. Through the presentation of defamiliarized handmade objects, my exhibition presents the appearance of manufactured material through the serial manipulation of scale, surface and quantity. The result reveals a clay piece that renders the material unrecognizable providing the viewer with a new view on the object's tradition. / v, 47 leaves : ill. ; 29 cm
