Friction Spot Welding (FSpW) is a friction spot weld process, it operates in the solid-state of the material and allows joining two or more sheets in overlap configuration. It is used to join light weight materials, also is suitable to any material that shows good ductility. In this work two different materials are analyzed AA Alclad 2024-T351 e AA 2024-T351, between them the use, or not, of the corrosion protection layer Alclad. The welds are made under the same process parameters previously studied to the material with Alclad. Two parameters are utilized: the first one is the optimum parameter capable to produce welds with good mechanical performance and reproducibility, and another one inadequate because it produces joins with poor mechanical response and reproducibility. It is intended with this work, to evaluate the effects that the Alclad layer can cause in the welds, in its mechanical performance, fracture mode, microstructure and geometry of the join. The results showed a considerable influence of the Alclad, considering that during the process, it migrates from the sheet surface to the center of the weld. Thus, an interface of this material, that has a very low hardness, is created, influencing negatively the performance of the weld and changing the fracture mode. The aim of this dissertation is to perform an analysis of the fracture from the lap shear test, using the finite element method. Therefore, becomes necessary study and develop a numerical model capable to represent the nucleation, coalescence, formation of one or more cracks and, the consequent propagation until the fracture of the body. To perform the analysis it was used the numerical model of fracture called Johnson-Cook (JC), which expresses the equivalent stress as a function of the plastic deformation, the strain rate and the temperature. It was also made a study about the Continuum Damage Mechanics (CDM) theories, and it was necessary to obtain new parameters for the model, that describe the phenomenon and the material. In this sense, it will be performed two analyses, and the first considers the Alclad layer and, the second, considers a weld without defects. It is expected to identify the places where the crack nucleated, and analyze the behavior of the weld, step by step, during the crack propagation, until the complete fracture of the component. And, finally, evaluate the interference in the numerical model of the presence of the protection corrosion layer Alclad.

Kvalita života u osob s lupénkou / Quality of life of a person with psoriasisMARKOVÁ, Iva January 2008 (has links)
Psoriasis is not an illness just of these days. 3-7% of world population suffers from this illness. This diploma work focuses on quality of life of ill people. We guess that it influences such a client in a holistic way. This illness interferes into personal, professional and social life. So psoriasis is not just an illness but also an everyday problem or handicap for those who get ill.Two questionnaires were made for this research, where first of those is focused on quality of life by a standard questionnaire and the second one was created on the base of analysis of D. Johnson model. Those questionnaires were given out to ill in South and Central Counties of Bohemia. The respondents were to chose, after their completing, which one is more sensitive to problems implying from this illness. The results are graphically shown and then paid attention in chapter Discussion. Finally I would like to say, those hypotheses were acknowledged. Psoriasis influences life in a holistic way, a nurse can have a significant influence on well-being of a client with this illness in area of her nursing interventions and D. Johnson model is an effective tool for providing those ill with psoriasis with care.

El ser racializado: el concepto de raza en las experiencias autobiográficas de Richard Rodriguez y Kevin R. JohnsonJanuary 2014 (has links)
abstract: Race is a complex system founded on social ideologies that categorize and evaluate human beings into different groups based on their visible characteristics (e.g., skin color) that, according to this notion of race, indicate a person's personal traits (e.g., intelligence). The concept of race has been an integral part of American society since the ratification of the United States Constitution in the late 18th century. Early on, the practice of race within American society established one particular group as the norm: the White Anglo-Saxon Protestant. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the distinctions among racial groups essentially came down to "white" and "nonwhite." Consequently, certain social inequalities were bestowed upon those groups that did not fit the model of the dominant "white" group. Autobiographies, especially those from marginalized groups, can serve as an important source of these social disparities since the author is able to recount their own social experiences vis-à-vis racial practices within society. With this in mind, this thesis analyses the concept of race in relation to the personal experiences of two authors through their respective autobiographies: Hunger of Memory: The Education of Richard Rodriguez (1982) by Richard Rodriguez and How Did You Get to Be Mexican?: A White/Brown Man's Search for Identity (1999) by Kevin R. Johnson. The critical work of Paula M. L. Moya, Linda Martín Alcoff, Hazel Rose Markus, George M. Fredrickson, Genaro M. Padilla and others are used as the theoretical framework in the literary analysis of these authors' texts. In summary, the results of this study demonstrate the concept of race as a salient aspect in regards to the ideological formation of each respective author. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.A. Spanish 2014

From Rehabilitation to Punishment: American Corrections after 1945Lux, Erin January 2012 (has links)
The incarceration rate in the United States has increased dramatically in the period since 1945. How did the United States move from having stable incarceration rates in line with global norms to the largest system of incarceration in the world? This study examines the political and intellectual aspects of incarceration and theories of criminal justice by looking at the contributions of journalists, intellectuals and policy makers to the debate on whether the purpose of the justice system is rehabilitation, vengeance, deterrence or incapacitation. This thesis finds that justice and the institution of the prison itself are not immutable facts of modern civilization, but are human institutions vulnerable to the influence of politics, culture and current events.

A style discussion of Kahlolo, Let_at_i, and Vocalise Africa by Alexander Frederick JohnsonIbiayo, Oluwakayode Samson January 2019 (has links)
South African composer, Alexander Johnson is a prolific and outstanding figure among
his contemporaries. His numerous works and contributions to South African classical
and indigenous music is worthy of mention. Over the years, he has been recognised both
locally and internationally for his contributions by receiving numerous awards, honorary
positions, as well as commissions. His works have been performed both locally and
internationally. Johnson’s compositional style mostly features diverse musical elements
and devices from the post-tonal era. He also utilises special and unique compositional
techniques in his works which give him a ‘signature.’
This study discusses and disseminates brief information on Johnson’s biography, as well
as a catalogue of the composer’s published works.
Most importantly, the three works in this study namely Kahlolo, Let_at_i, and Vocalise
Africa feature Johnson’s unique interpretation of South African music in the twenty-first
century. This study focuses on exploring the background of the three chosen works, and
the inspiration behind the creation of these works. Furthermore, the compositional
techniques employed by the composer, as well as the distinguishing features of his
compositional style are also discussed.
This study additionally aims to trace and disseminate similarities between the three
respective works as well as analyse the three selected pieces with regard to mostly
harmonic devices and techniques, melody, rhythm, form structure, texture, and
registration for organ music. Each piece is comprehensively discussed separately, with
emphasis on the above topics.
Further research in the future could entail a study on style discussion of Johnson’s more
recent compositions in other genres and instrumentation. / Dissertation (MMus)--University of Pretoria, 2019. / Music / MMus / Unrestricted

Cultural challenges in translating Tayeb Salih’s novel Season of Migration to the North (1969) from Arabic into English : a comparative and analytical study with a focus on metaphors and similesElkhalifa Mohamed, Amani Elmahi January 2020 (has links)
This study investigates how and to what effect metaphors and similes from Tayeb
Salih‘s novel Mawsim al-Hiǧra ilā ash-Shamāl (1966) were translated into English –
a worthy topic, given the many linguistic and cultural differences between Arabic and
English, and the difficulty of translating figurative language.
The novel depicts aspects of the life and culture of the Sudanese people.
Initially banned in the Arab world, it was voted, in 2001, the most important Arabic
novel of the twentieth century. This brought Tayeb Salih (1929–2009) fame and
recognition, and translation into more than twenty languages. Season of Migration to
the North (1960), the English translation by Canadian-born orientalist Denys Johnson-
Davies (1922–2017), is the object of this particular study.
This qualitative study employs descriptive translation studies (DTS) as the
main theoretical framework, supplemented by insights gained from equivalence
theories, theories of culture, the functionalist approach and cognitive studies.
Following a textual approach, the study investigates the Arabic source text, the
English target text, applicable translation theories and secondary literature on
metaphors and similes as sources of information and/or data. It discusses the
aforementioned translation theories, definitions, components and types of metaphors
and similes in Arabic and English, as well as strategies and procedures of translating
metaphors and similes. The researcher identifies, describes and analyses a selection of
similes and metaphors in the Arabic source text, and how they were conveyed in the
English target text. The study concludes with a discussion of the effects of the
translation choices made and the strategies used. / Dissertation (MA (Applied Language Studies))--University of Pretoria, 2020. / African Languages / MA (Applied Language Studies) / Unrestricted

The relationship between Wechsler Intelligence Scales for Children -- revised variability of subtest scaled scores and reading achievement gain as measured by the Woodcock-Johnson Tests of Educational Achievement -- revised in children with learning disabilitiesMiller, Mark 01 January 1994 (has links)
This study identified a sample of children with specific learning disabilities according to Public Law 94-142 criteria. The primary purpose of the study was to examine whether sample member's intravariability of WISC-R subtest scaled scores was related to their reading achievement gain. A second purpose was to determine if any relationship existed between intelligence and reading achievement gain. Eighty-four Resource placed elementary students composed the study sample. They ranged from six to eleven years of age, and were primarily male caucasian. Since 1989, each sample member had been administered the WISC-R once; and , each sample member had been administered the WJTEA-R twice, with at least 12 months separating the two administrations . Results identified no relationship between WSIC-R subtest scaled score scatter and reading achievment gain on the WJTEA-R. A positive correlation was identified be tween intelligence level and academic gains in reading. Important ancillary correlations of significance identified for all subjects included a negative relationship be tween the variable Age and the variables Intelligence , Academic gain, and the WISC-R FD factor . When intelligence was held to within average parameters significant correlations were identified between the variable Achievement and the variables Age and Time (negative), and with the WISC-R FD and VC factors (positive) . Multiple regression analyses indicated the FD factor best able to predict academic gain for this group. It is probable, that in the identification of learning disabled students, that the identification of processing disorders (as with previously sought patterns) is not viable. It may be that the only key characteristics are intellectual level and severe discrepancy.

Alexander Johnson en Hendrik Hofmeyr : ’n stylbespreking van geselekteerde kamermusiekwerkeLe Roux, Johannes H. January 2014 (has links)
The aim of this study is to identify the main differences in compositional style
in selected chamber music works by Hendrik Hofmeyr (Sonata per Flauto e
Pianoforte, Sonata per Clarinetto e Pianoforte and Sonata per Violoncello e
Pianoforte) and Alexander Johnson (Imicabango for flute and piano, Three
Incantations for flute, clarinet and piano, and Khalagari for flute and piano).
After a thorough analysis of the melodic-, harmonic-, rhythmic-, and structural
elements, it was clear that the two composers’ composition style is different
from one another. Differences can be identified under the following main
points: form structure, melodic and harmonic content, recurring motives and
texture.
Hofmeyr makes use of traditional form structures, such as sonata form,
ternary form, and theme and variations. Johnson does not use traditional form
structures and makes use of free form structures, such as: A1-A2-A3-A4-A5-
A6-A7 (second movement from Khalagari), ABABC (third movement from
Three Incantations), and A1-A2-B-A3-closing section (first movement from
Three Incantations). The first movement from Khalagari is the only movement
where references to sonata form can be found.
Hofmeyr uses existing modes and scales in his works. Both his Sonata per
Flauto e Pianoforte and Sonata per Violoncello e Pianoforte contain numerous
examples where he makes use of the octatonic scale and the phrygian mode.
Examples of the hexatonic scale can be found in the first and second
movements of the Sonata per Clarinetto e Pianoforte. Hofmeyr’s chord
structures are also based on these scales and modes. Alexander Johnson
does not use any of the above-mentioned scales, but rather makes use of his
own scale (labeled as the “Johnson-scale” in this study). His chord structures
are also based on this scale.
Hofmeyr does not use themes and motives from other compositions in the
three works in this study. He does however combine themes from earlier
movements within a composition. Examples of this can be found in the third movements from Sonata per Flauto e Pianoforte and Sonata per Clarinetto e
Pianoforte. Johnson combines motives and themes from other compositions
in his works. Motives from Three Incantations can be found in Khalagari. A detailed summary can be found in the conclusion of this study. / Thesis (DMus)--University of Pretoria, 2014. / tm2015 / Music / DMus / Unrestricted
