Journalistik i ett nytt medium : En studie av hur journaliststudenter på två universitet i Sverige använder Twitter / Journalism in a new medium

Durefelt, Filip, Skarhall, Tobias January 2013 (has links)
The aim of this study was to find out how journalism students at two universities in Sweden, Gothenburg University and Linnaeus University in Kalmar, use the social networking service Twitter. We were primarily interested in whether the students are using Twitter as a journalistic tool, which includes gathering, production and distribution of material. The study focused on journalism students because they soon will enter the working life and therefore can provide an indication of whether Twitter is a part of the future of journalism. We have used theories of mass communication to describe the development in the area and explore how journalism has adapted to this change. The study was conducted in the form of a survey in which the students answered questions about how they use Twitter and what they think about the social networking service. The results show that a large percentage of the journalism students use Twitter as a journalistic tool, but not in a particularly high degree. We noticed, however, that their usage differ from their thoughts and that many see Twitter as a useful tool in journalism.

Imagining modernity in António de Alcântara Machado's Journalistic Chronicles

Alfredo, João Valentino 19 July 2012 (has links)
This dissertation, titled “Imagining Modernity in António de Alcântara Machado’s Journalistic Chronicles”, demonstrates the historical relevance of the journalistic chronicle in Brazilian intellectual and cultural life and its novel diachronic and aesthetical relationship to Latin American modernization. Focusing primarily on unpublished and original journalistic chronicles (crônica) by avant-garde writer Alcântara Machado, the genre of the crônica, a brief narrative piece that first debuted in Brazil’s mid-19th century newspapers, is analyzed as both a key cultural mediation and valuable archive of the early intellectual constructions of Brazil’s entrance into modernity. Thanks to its uniquely hybrid quality, the crônica crossed multiple discursive boundaries, including literature, journalism, history, caricature, photography, painting, drama and cinema, and dealt with a wide variety of objects and subjects in narrating the current events of 19th century Rio de Janeiro and early 20th century São Paulo. To examine this topic, this dissertation focuses on the crônicas by Brazilian writers such as José de Alencar, Machado de Assis, Olavo Bilac, João do Rio, and Lima Barreto. The crônica, according to this study, conceived of the city as an entity in flux, revealing the chance encounters and tensions between isolated subjects and the crowd, thus shedding light on the paradoxical interplay between the public and private spheres. All these complex themes are discussed under the lights of a comprehensive bibliography on modernity, literature, and journalism, in order to examine the crônica's extensive engagement with urbanization, race and gender issues, the education of the lower classes, and the growth of the literature and journalism in the region. Specifically, it is discussed how the crônica became a powerful ideological force in the construction of national and cultural identities, contributing to Brazil’s and Latin America’s place in the liberal economic order. Concomitantly, it is shown how such journalistic writing decisively impacted literary production Brazil and Latin America. / text

Žurnalistinio tyrimo ribos asmens teisės į privatų gyvenimą kontekste / The boundaries of journalistic investigation in the context of a person's private life

Čekanauskaitė, Loreta 14 June 2010 (has links)
[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / SUMMARY The goal of this work „The boundaries of journalistic investigation in the context of a person's private life" is to determine in what situations and by what methods the public media, when performing journalistic research, crosses the boundaries of an individual in the context of private life. It becomes necessary to find the boundary between free speech and other personal rights mandated by the Constitution – rights to a private life. Thus, not only is it important to understand the limits of media’s freedom, but also the increasing liability for crossing those limits. Characterizing, comparative, and analytical methods were used for the chosen research topic. The paper will attempt to find the reasons behind the chosen inquiry, defend the shortcomings of the legal regulations, and it will provide recommendations for tools to regulate the media and protect the right to a private life. This paper is made up of four main parts. The first section introduces the interpretation of a new developing law of civic broadcasting, its lawful base, organization and methods. It also discusses general law that is relevant to mass media and analyzes regulatory and legal statutes and national and international origins of this law. The second section of the paper presents journalists as being subject to law and discusses general ethical principles of journalism, the requirements for journalistic investigation, the limitations of regulatory law and present-day problems. The third... [to full text]

Populiarusis nežinomas žanras: žurnalistinė (auto) biografija / Popular unknown genre: jounalistic (auto) biography

Jeromina, Loreta 14 August 2012 (has links)
Recently there is a significant growing of books about show business representatives in Lithuania. It is difficult to define the book genre, it is close to an autobiography genre, that is why the history of autobiography, the most important features of the familiar genres are analyzed in the exploratory part. Attempting to figure out which genre can be assigned to the books about show business representatives, developing what the autobiography features they match and which do not. Another important question - what leads to tell the own story and whether they are read. The work presents the case study and its results, why there is a desire to tell a life story, interviews with journalists about the readability of show business life news, examines what readable magazines are and what TV shows are most viewed. As an advertising plays an important role in human life, looking for hints of advertising in the books about show business representatives, including search ads on the Internet when the advertising face - our characters. Examining the impact of sales may be known as the human face of an advertising recovery. The author of all the books is a journalist, so it is important to understand how journalists present a person, which imagine is created. Analyzing what the positive values of this book are. The main problem of the work - the popular genre definition, its origin and the consequences are unknown (readability, taken root, explanation).

A Q-analysis of ethical expectations of journalism and public relations students

McCarty, Scott January 1991 (has links)
This study attempted to determine typical perceptions of public relations and news-editorial students of accepted ethical conduct in public relations and journalism. The researcher provided 32 students, half public relations majors and half news-editorial majors, with 51 individual statements. Each statement either supported or opposed a specific action that a public relations practitioner or journalist may take in an ethical dilemma, or a belief that professionals in those fields may hold. Each student was asked to indicate how strongly the student agreed or disagreed with each statement.A computer program developed for Q Methodology studies was used to extract two factors from the students' answers, resulting in the formation of two hypothetical groups, Type I and Type II. Type I consisted of 14 public relations majors and six news-editorial majors. Type II consisted of 10 news-editorial majors and two public relations majors. Most students in both groups agreed that they would not be asked to lie as professionals, that they would always produce original work, that professionals in their future fields believe they serve the public interest, and that professionals in their future fields believe their professions serve society. However, Type I students expected to function as channels of communication for their employers, while Type II students disagreed with that job description of themselves. Type I students strongly disagreed that practitioners in their fields do not care about public feedback; Type II students marginally agreed with that statement. Type I students seemed to believe it was normal for practitioners in their fields to maintain two codes of ethics, one for professional use and another for personal use. Type II students marginally disagreed with that concept. This finding appears to contradict those studies which suggest that practitioners are only as ethical professionally as they are personally. / Department of Journalism

Well, a half million people just looked at the fish” : How journalists perceive traffic whoring

Hosshage, Clara, Levin, Sophie January 2014 (has links)
Computational techniques have transformed the journalistic approach. Journalists now have the opportunity to integrate user-statistics from the news website with their work. Singer (2011) argues that journalists seem particularly afraid of items, which they perceive as trivial or otherwise unsavory, will prove popular - potentially creating management pressures to produce more of those stories. She describes this practice as ‘‘traffic whoring’’. This phenomenon could affect journalists democratic function and their public responsibility. Through qualitative interviews we seek to answer the question: how do journalist perceive traffic whoring and how does it affect their journalistic work? Our study reveals that the interviewed journalists don’t consider themselves to be influenced by traffic whoring. On the contrary, their given statements describes the opposite. Partly due to the visibility of user-preferences, but also due to an increasing management demand to generate high numbers and statistics.

Citizen tourist: newspaper travel journalism's responsibility to its audience

Hill-James, Candeeda Rennie January 2006 (has links)
Travel is the stuff of dreams. But its facilitation or impediment is the reality of commerce and governments and their manipulation by marketing and political considerations. This thesis examines how travel journalism can maintain responsibility to a 'private' tourist audience in the 'public' tourism sphere. Travel journalism is not only an under-researched area, but provides an important site to study the role of public interest information for a consumer audience participating in a sometimes culturally and politically dangerous activity. The reporting of travel by mainstream newspapers concentrates on the travel dream, while the tourism industry, described as the largest in the world, receives little scrutiny by society's guardians of democracy. This thesis examines literature from the fields of journalism, sociology and marketing to highlight the private tourist audience desires and the measures that commercial and government travel enterprises employ to reach consumers through public relations influence over journalism entities and practitioners. This study also emphasises the public nature of tourism and the risks it presents to tourists to examine how travel journalism, as a responsible moral practice, should address its audience. A content analysis was conducted on a sample of Australian newspaper travel journalism to provide a description of international travel coverage. More specifically it revealed the characteristics of travel articles that provide public interest information to move the private tourist audience to engage in the public tourism sphere as an active citizenship.
