What can keep students in a city after completing their studies?

Cities throughout Europe, including Växjö, a college city in the south of Sweden, have been developing and managing their city brands actively to attract young talents and students. Växjö has been a destination for students from Sweden and all over the world to study in Linnaeus University (LNU). However, the city, and according to its managers, has not been able to keep students in it after completing their studies. There are many previous studies that focus on destination and place marketing in general, however, only a few highlight the topic of city brands and branding.   This research has been conducted in order to explore the factors that can contribute to Linnaeus University students’ (customers) satisfaction with the city of Växjö, and examine the relationship between Customer satisfaction and Customer retention and Intention to switch in relative to Växjö. Qualitative and quantitative methods have been used. The primary data for this research has been collected through an online questionnaire survey from 84 LNU students who fitted the target sample criteria, and 6 semi-structured interviews. The findings of this research suggest that majority of the students are satisfied with Växjö as they take their current situation as students into consideration, however, they have shown a low rate of city retention, and a high rate of intention to switch to another place in future. The results are limited to the city of Växjö.

Journalistik i ett nytt medium : En studie av hur journaliststudenter på två universitet i Sverige använder Twitter / Journalism in a new medium

The aim of this study was to find out how journalism students at two universities in Sweden, Gothenburg University and Linnaeus University in Kalmar, use the social networking service Twitter. We were primarily interested in whether the students are using Twitter as a journalistic tool, which includes gathering, production and distribution of material. The study focused on journalism students because they soon will enter the working life and therefore can provide an indication of whether Twitter is a part of the future of journalism. We have used theories of mass communication to describe the development in the area and explore how journalism has adapted to this change. The study was conducted in the form of a survey in which the students answered questions about how they use Twitter and what they think about the social networking service. The results show that a large percentage of the journalism students use Twitter as a journalistic tool, but not in a particularly high degree. We noticed, however, that their usage differ from their thoughts and that many see Twitter as a useful tool in journalism.

Creative People and Industries for Growth and Development : A case study of the municipality of Kalmar

This thesis examines the relationship between place and creative people and industries. The shift from industrial economies to knowledge-driven economies has ushered in what some scholars refer to as the Creative Economy. At the heart of this new economy are the Creative Industries, which consist of people, creativity, skill and talent. These industries, which are creating more jobs and adding increased value to products and services, represent one of the largest and fastest growing sectors. In Sweden, the Creative Industries are increasingly being recognized as an important asset for global competitiveness and research reveals that 35% of Sweden’s employed are considered part of the so-called ‘Creative Class’: artists, researchers, managers and other related professionals. The research also reveals, however, that there is an uneven distribution of this talent pool throughout the country. As regional growth is of continual concern in Sweden, there has been an increased focus on the potential of the Creative Industries to stimulate development on the local and regional level. The municipality of Kalmar recognizes that its strong cultural institutions are among its greatest assets and they are working to integrate culture and cultural values into the city planning process in order to create an attractive environment. In addition, their recent establishment as a university town is considered to be of the utmost significance in their struggle to attract creative people and industries, and Linnaeus University is recognized as an important motor for regional development as well as a seedbed for innovation, research and new companies. / Uppsatsen undersöker relationen mellan plats och kreativa människor och industrier. Övergången från industriella ekonomier till kunskapsdrivna ekonomier har inlett vad vissa forskare hänvisar till som den kreativa ekonomin. I hjärtat av denna nya kreativa ekonomi finns de kreativa näringarna som består av människor, kreativitet, skicklighet och talang. Dessa industrier, som skapar fler arbetstillfällen och lägger ökat värde till produkter och tjänster, utgör en av de största och snabbast växande branscherna. I Sverige ses de kreativa näringarna mer och mer som en viktig tillgång för den globala konkurrenskraften, och forskning visar att 35% av Sveriges anställda anses vara en del av den så kallade "kreativa klassen": konstnärer, forskare, företagsledare och andra relaterade yrkesgrupper. Forskningen visar dock att det finns en ojämn fördelning av denna talangpool. Eftersom den regionala tillväxten fortsätter att vara ett orosmoln i Sverige, har det skett en ökad fokusering på de möjligheter som de kreativa branscherna har för att stimulera utvecklingen på lokal och regional nivå. Kriminaljournalister och Flashback : En intervjustudie om pressetik i ett nytt medium / Crime reporters and Flashback : An interview study of media ethics in a new medium

The aim of our study was to examine Swedish crime reporters’ approach to the social medium Flashback. Our main focus was the crime reporters’ use of the medium Flashback, and attitude towards their own use of media ethics in relation to the medium Flashback. Flashback as a medium is not obliged to any media ethics and lacks a legally accountable publisher. In the search for information about committed crimes people tends to visit Flashback for the information that the traditional media cannot offer. In that sense Flashback challenges the foundation of media ethics today. That is why we found it interesting to study crime reporters in particular. The study used a qualitative approach and was conducted through interviews with eight crime reporters. We have used theories about media ethics, social media and participatory journalism to explore the development in the area and how journalists have adapted to this change. The result shows that there are journalists who use Flashback as a journalistic tool to find information, to save time and as a mean to keep up-to-date. And moreover, the study gives examples on how an online forum with anonymous sources can be used – like any other source, as long as you are source-critical.

Fallet Linné : Påverkan av motivation och arbetsglädje i anslutning till organisationsförändringar / Case Linnaeus : The influence of motivation and job satisfaction in connection with organizational changes

This empirical study aims to determine whether Linnaeus University's formation in 2010 and subsequent reorganization has affected the employees' perceived motivation and job satisfaction. A combined approach was used in which both quantitative and qualitative questions were asked in the survey form. 101 survey responses is the basis for the analysis and these have been associated with SDT-theory in order to draw further conclusions. The study shows that among the respondents, there is a frustration that is possibly related to the two organizational changes. They feel that they have lost confidence in management as a result of not being part of decision making. The study also conveys a very fragmented picture, members of the organization perceive that they have very different possibilities to peform well, participate and have clear goals to work towards.

In this bachelor thesis, strategies used for collection development in Swedish public libraries are presented. Librarians from four different libraries from cities of different sizes are interviewed about the way they manage acquisitions, users’ requests for books, and other collection development related tasks. Ranganathan’s five laws for libraries, which are his guidelines for how libraries should work, are used in the analysis, where they are compared to the views of the librarians who are interviewed for this study. The results showed that the different librarians used similar tools when building their collections, and that the most prominent thing they all cited as most important to have in mind was the needs of the libraries users.

“What you NEED to know”,  “Was man wissen muss” and “Vad man behöver veta” : A contrastive corpus study of  NEED to and its German and Swedish correspondences in non-fiction

This study investigates how the semi-modal need to is translated into German/Swedish and which German/Swedish correspondences are translated into need to. To this end, the Linnaeus University English–German–Swedish Corpus (LEGS) is used. Nida’s (1964: 159-162) concept of formal and dynamic equivalence is used to perform the qualitative analysis and to discuss the results from the quantitative part of the study. The use of semi-modals such as be going to, have to and want to have increased during the second half of the 20th century (Leech et al.: 2009: 99). need to represents the obligation as being in the best interest of the subject and is associated with objectivity (Kastrone 2008: 829; Aijmer 2017: 28) Thus, need to is used to distance the speaker to avoid an authoritarian stance. This trend is a sign of an ongoing democratization (Leech et al. 2009: 270). The results showed that the preferred German translation is müssen (‘must’) (55%) and  the preferred Swedish translation is behöva (‘need’) (47%). ‘Other’ is the second preferred German translation and the third preferred Swedish translation. These results are reflected in the structures translated from German and Swedish. The results indicate that the semantic category of the co-occurring main verb and the co-occurring subject affect translation. Based on these results, it could be said that English, followed by Swedish, is leading the process of democratization. However, further studies are needed to confirm this hypothesis.

Vertical Metaphors : English down and up in Swedish contrast

This thesis aims to compare the English metaphorical expressions up and down in relation to Swedish. For this purpose, English original texts with Swedish translations and Swedish original texts and English translations were analyzed by using the Linnaeus English-German-Swedish corpus. Thus, the study will show that the metaphorical expressions up and down are used more often in English translated texts as well as what the most common Swedish translation or original of the metaphorical expressions are. Furthermore, the paper will sort the metaphorical expressions based on target domains and compare this with the Swedish translations.

Delegering av flaggstatsskyldigheter : Hur påverkas sjösäkerheten av flaggstatens delegering av skyldigheter till klassificeringssällskap?

Arbetet har syftat till att undersöka och problematisera flaggstatens och klassificeringssällskapens roller såsom kontrollfunktion avseende sjösäkerhet. Frågor har ställts angående vilka skyldigheter flaggstater å ena sidan, och klassificeringssällskap å andra sidan, har vad gäller fartygskonstruktion och fartygssäkerhet. Vidare har arbetet även behandlat frågan vilka sjösäkerhetsrelaterade effekter som kan uppkomma av att flaggstaten delegerar skyldigheter avseende konstruktion till klassificeringssällskap. För att besvara frågorna har en kvalitativ dokumentstudie gjorts, med vissa inslag av rättsdogmatik i de delar som avsett finna gällande rätt på området. Materialet för dokumentstudiens del har till stor del valts ut genom en bred sökning i litteratur och avhandlingar på området. På så vis har det använda materialet redan genomgått en urvalsprocess och därmed ansetts vara relevant för arbetet. Resultatet visar att det finns en viss överlappning i kontrollfunktionsrollen för både flaggstaten och klassificeringssällskapen. Att delegering av skyldigheter sker från flaggstaten till klassificeringssällskapen är inte nödvändigtvis problematiskt. Dock kan en delegering få negativa effekter på sjösäkerheten i de fall klassificeringssällskapen inte är i paritet med flaggstaten eller båda parter saknar en effektiv kontrollfunktion med högt ställda krav. Skulle delegering ske till ett klassificeringssällskap som har en god kontrollfunktion med höga krav kan brister som finns inom flaggstaten, såsom bristande resurser och kompetens, avhjälpas. Trots att systemet till stor del verkar fungera tillfredsställande finns anledning att fortsätta forska inom området för att undersöka hur de problem som belysts i detta arbete kan åtgärdas eller förhindras i framtiden. / The aim of this paper has been to investigate and problematize the roles of the flag state and the classification societies in regard to their maritime safety control function. Questions have been raised regarding what obligations flag states on one hand, and classification societies on the other hand, have regarding ship construction and ship safety. Furthermore, the paper has also addressed the question of what maritime safety-related effects may arise from the flag state delegating their duties to classification societies. To answer the questions, a qualitative document study has been conducted, with some elements of legal dogmatics in certain parts in order to find the current legal situation. The material for the document study has been selected by thorough research into literature and dissertations in the area. Therefore, the chosen material has been previously reviewed and gone through a selection process and was thus considered relevant for this paper. The result has shown that there is some overlap in the control function for both the flag state and the classification societies. Delegating obligations from the flag state to the classification societies is not necessarily problematic. However, delegation of the said duties can have negative effects on maritime safety in cases where the classification societies are not on par with the flag state or both parties lack an effective control apparatus to enforce high standards. Should delegation occur to a classification society that has a good control apparatus with high requirements, possible shortcomings that exist within the flag state, such as lack of resources and skills, can be remedied by the high standard performance of the classification society. Even though the system might seem satisfactorily at first glance, there is room for further research in the area in order to investigate how the existing problems can be managed and prevented in the future.
