I AM MORE THAN WHAT I APPEAR: THE LIVED EXPERIENCE OF AFRICAN AMERICAN FEMALE JOURNALISTS

Unknown Date (has links)
This study investigates the phenomenon of intersectionality between race and gender on the lived experiences of African American female broadcast journalists in the state of Florida. Seven in-depth interviews were conducted and compared to determine reoccurring themes taking place throughout each participant’s experience in broadcast journalism as a result of their race and gender. Race, appearance, racial mentoring, and professional advancement were the common themes that emerged in each interview. Although there is a significant amount of research on African American women in the workplace, there is a greater need to focus on the field of broadcast journalism and the African American women who work in this field. Previous research on African American women in the workplace shows that women of color experience different work environments and treatment. The findings suggest African American female broadcast journalists experience a different work environment compared to their colleagues due to the intersection of race and gender. Jornalista-educomunicador(a): sentidos de uma nova identidade profissional / Journalist-educommunicator: meanings of a new professional identity

Ferreira, Bruno de Oliveira 05 July 2019 (has links)
This paper analyses the skills of journalists applied to educational activities in the world of work. We started from the verification that, especially in the Brazilian third sector, there are social organizations idealized and managed by trainee journalists. In addition, regarding Associação Brasileira de Pesquisadores e Profissionais em Educomunicação (Brazilian Association of Researchers and Professionals in Educommunication - ABPEducom), journalism is the most representative professional category among its associates, which demonstrates journalist\'s proximity and identification with educommunication. Thus, in the theoretical scope of this research, we discussed educommunication as an appropriate professional activity for journalists. We used authors who (1) problematize the social subject, their subjectivity formation and their engagement in social movements, as well as communication and education interrelation, especially from social organizations in Brazil; (2) approach journalism teaching and practice and its emptying in contemporary times, when reports on hegemonic press reality reduce journalism to commodity and so its professionals to information automata; and (3) discuss work from the social being ontology perspective and, in this sense, the ergological approach supports our view on work and, methodologically, it is the epistemological posture we adopted in the research organization to rub practices, experiences and discourses about work. We conducted field research based on three data collecting steps: the first one, exploratory and quantitative, investigated an initial profile of the Brazilian educommunicator, surveying ABPEducom members, especially, journalists who identify themselves with educommunication. The second step is empirical and consisted of observation and analysis of the working activities of nine journalists, associated to six initiatives in which education is identified, either in the procedural characteristics of the performed activities or in the proximity of the professionals with the concept as well as with the universe of education. The third data collection step included listening to 21 journalists working in communication and education interface. The dynamic three-pole device, which aims to understand interrelationships in the world of work, is originally from ergology and is used to support this research methodology, allowing to stress the work activities observed in practice and the discourses of the professionals about the work done in the interface with education. We used Discourse Analysis (AD) as a technique to identify issues which permeate what journalists say about their interface practices, especially values and repertoires they use in educommunication practice. As main results, we identified that the researched professionals bring back the deontology of journalism in the educommunication activities, in which they exercise their sensibility to social issues. The predominant repertoire, in this context, is more of communication and less of journalism, that is combined with communicative, educational and social development strategies.

English and Vietnamese political news dicourse : a contrastive analysis in terms of stucture, lexis and syntax

Hoa, Nguyen, n/a January 1990 (has links)
The present study is one of the first attempts undertaken to study English and Vietnamese news discourse on a contrastive basis. More specifically, it investigates the structure, the lexical and syntactic features of English and Vietnamese political news discourse. It is hoped that the results of the study may help the Vietnamese teacher and student to make better use of newspapers in the process of English language teaching and learning. In addition, it is hoped that the study may benefit the journalist, to some extent, because it is generally assumed that if the knowledge of news discourse structure, the linguistic features and the factors involved are professionally known and shared, this will facilitate news discourse production and comprehension. The study reveals two different strategies used by English and Vietnamese political news writers. English news writers predominantly employ the IP structure pattern whereas Vietnamese news writers employ BTN (Background-to-News). Lexically, English newspapers use more lively, vigorous language, metaphors, puns and hyperbole. In contrast, the occurrence of serious, formal language is a very pronounced feature of Vietnamese newspapers. This is the area where Vietnamese students of English often have difficulty, as is indicated by the survey. The greatest syntactic difference is sentence order, namely, English news stories often use S + V + (O) + (A) while their Vietnamese counterparts use A + S + V + (O) +. The other difference is that English news paragraphs are mostly single sentence paragraphs as disctinct from their multi-sentence Vietnamese ones. Chapter One is an introduction explaining the rationale, the methods, and the data for analysis, of the present study. Chapter Two is concerned with the theoretical background to the study. It deals with such concepts as cohesion, coherence, structure, relevance, text and discourse. Chapter Three provides a contrastive overview of English and Vietnamese newspapers, essentially in terms of ownership and the approach to news. Chapter Four examines the different structure patterns used by English and Vietnamese reporters and journalists. Chapter Five and Six study the different lexical and syntactic features of English and Vietnamese political news discourse, respectively. In chapter Seven, a comparison of English and Vietnamese political news discourse is given, which is based on the analyses presented in chapters Four, Five and Six. In addition, it presents the results of a survey of comprehension difficulty encountered by Vietnamese students studying English now at the University of Canberra, and looks at some discourse strategies involved in news discourse production and comprehension. The last chapter offers some implications for TEFL in Vietnam, which are based on the author's own experience and results of a survey. The author hopes that these implications may be of some help to the practising teacher as well as the student.

To make a mark : A qualitative study of female journalist's working conditions in Ghana

Secher, Åsa January 2010 (has links)
This is a qualitative study based on fieldwork carried out in Accra, Ghana April 3 – May 29, 2010. The aim was to shed light on how a selected number of female Ghanaian journalists experience their working conditions from a gender based perspective. The material consists of eight semi-structured interviews ranging from 20 minutes to 1 hour 12 minutes. The interviewees are female, Ghanaian journalists between 23 and 46 years old working in print or broadcast media in Ghana.  The interviews were analyzed thematically resulting in seven sub-headings, all relating to my research questions, which were: - Is being a female journalist in Ghana today in any way a disadvantage/advantage? - How do female journalists in Ghana experience their opportunities to advance and be promoted? - Do female journalists in Ghana experience any differences between them and their male colleagues? Do they report on different kinds of subjects? My analysis conclude there are a number of disadvantages being female within the media in Ghana: there is a perception of female journalists being flirtatious and less professional than male journalists, it is challenging for female journalists to start a family since journalism is a very time-consuming profession and the responsibility for domestic work is still primarily on the woman and, finally, the interviewees experience they have to distinguish themselves from their male colleagues and make their mark as competent and professional to really be taken seriously. Concerning the opportunity to get promoted there is a contradiction; the interviewees all experience they have the opportunity to get promoted as long as they work hard, nevertheless they recognize a male-domination among their executives and expresses an awareness of gender based promotions. The interviewees claim they can report on whatever subjects they want, but they all express an awareness of the distinction between topics primarily covered by women and others by men. This contradiction is similar to the one articulated above. To sum up, there is a discrepancy between how the interviewees felt about their own situation and how they perceive the inequality issues surrounding them.

Att delta eller inte delta i sociala medier. : En kvalitativ studie om hur journalister på P4 Kalmar tänker kring publikinteraktion, sociala medier och den digitala klyftan. / To participate or not participate in social media

Wallberg, Hanna, Joby, Aina January 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to discuss how journalists think about the interaction with the audience in social media and the fact that it can make the traditional audience feel excluded. The study shows how journalists on P4 Kalmar is experiencing audience interaction in social media and describes how aware the journalists are about the digital divide. The results show that all of our interviewed journalists think that the interaction with the audience through social media works well and that there is awareness among journalists about the digital divide. The results also show that many of the interviewed journalists had not reflected on that parts of the audience can feel excluded by the interaction taking place in social media, but some of them could understand if parts of the audience felt that way. We consider our study as part of a research field on journalist’s interactivity with the audience through different types of media, but also as source of inspiration for future research on how the digital media becomes one with the community.

The Practice Of Journalism In Turkey As To The Views Of Turkish Parliament Journalists

Bayar Ekren, Duygu 01 December 2006 (has links) (PDF)
Journalists&rsquo / commitment to an objective, impartial, balanced way of reporting and their respect for ethical norms are considered a vital prerequisite for democracy to be carried out. The general purpose of this thesis is to reveal whether established journalistic practices in Turkey are shaped through commonly acknowledged professional principles in a way that is compatible with democratic expectancies. In order to achieve this goal, a group of journalists were interviewed in the summer of 2003 who worked as parliament journalists at some time in their careers. They were asked several questions mainly concerning the factors that might have influence on the processes of news making with a special emphasis on the negative consequences of the complex structure of media-politics relationships. The analysis of the interviews reveals Turkish journalists&rsquo / views that journalism in Turkey is faced with serious problems and even may be characterized by a high degree of &ldquo / degeneration&rdquo / .

What the drug war left behind

Carrillo, Mario Antonio 15 August 2012 (has links)
Since 2008, Ciudad Juarez has seen almost 10,000 murders due to Mexico’s ongoing war against drug-trafficking organizations. However, in 2011 the murders in the city began to decline. This report examines the reasons for this decrease and the lingering effects that will remain once the violence ends. It also analyzes historical factors dating back to the 1960s that have made Juarez a vortex of violence and looks at how such issues might affect the city’s future. Now that the violence is falling, some argue that the people of Juarez must to shift their attention from public safety and security and focus more on the recovery of the city. This report analyzes the question of what it means to reconstruct a city, one of 1.3 million people, or whether or not Juarez can be restored at all. It takes a look at the city through the eyes of several of its residents, including the president of the local Chamber of Commerce, an elementary school teacher, and a working journalist for one of the city’s television stations. It examines how each of their sectors of the city has been affected and how each of them can help in the recovery. This report includes a visit to one of the city’s schools to see first-hand the effects that the drug war has had on Juarez’ most vulnerable citizens, its children. It also follows a city journalist and examines how life for a reporter has changed in Juarez and how reporters can help the city by reporting on it in a more responsible manner. Finally, after seeing more than 10,000 businesses close, the city has struggled in jolting the economy. A project proposed by the Chamber of Commerce hopes to revitalize the economic sector of the city, but many wonder if it’s realistic to expect this project, which is to build a new convention center, to fix an entire city. / text
