Adding to the Bass Clarinet Repertoire Through Informed Transcription

January 2020 (has links)
abstract: The bass clarinet, developed almost a century after the soprano clarinet, isrelatively young compared to many modern instruments and consequently possesses a comparatively small repertoire. Until the mid-20th century, composers did not view the bass clarinet as a solo instrument and instead perceived it as cumbersome due to its low pitch and predominant use as an accompaniment instrument, resulting in a dearth of solo repertory for the bass clarinet before this time. Bass clarinetists desiring to perform repertoire from the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic periods must then appropriate music from other instruments. Through this study, I identify and detail a process for creating informed transcriptions of music for the bass clarinet to increase its body of solo and chamber literature. I examine the original scores and existing transcriptions of Concerto in C minor by Henri Casadesus (attributed to Johann Christian Bach) for cello, Bassoon Concerto Op. 75 by Carl Maria von Weber, Trios, Hob. IV:1-4 “London Trios” by Joseph Haydn, Kol Nidrei, Op. 47 by Max Bruch, and Clarinet Concerto in A Major, K. 622 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart to identify methods for the transcription process. I compare this to the transcription process for other instruments through examination of the Clarinet Sonatas, Op. 120, Nos. 1 and 2 by Johannes Brahms, which were transcribed from clarinet to viola by the composer himself. In this document, I discuss the historical background of the selected pieces, the selection process, editing considerations, performance practice, and the usage of transcriptions as a pedagogical tool. Although transcriptions for the bass clarinet already exist, appropriation of music from other instruments will continue to supplement and diversify its repertoire. These pieces serve to develop important technical and musical skills and allow the bass clarinetist to play music across various style periods. In this project, I select and transcribe three pieces for the bass clarinet: Sonata for Cello No. 1 in F Major by Benedetto Marcello, Grand Concerto for Bassoon and Orchestra by Johann Nepomuk Hummel, and Serenade in F minor, Op. 73, by Robert Kahn. The transcribed scores are included in the appendices of this document. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Music 2020

[en] PARMÊNIDES THE LOGOS POET / [pt] PARMÊNIDES, O POETA DO LOGOS

JUAREZ DE QUEIROZ CAMPOS JUNIOR 30 March 2016 (has links)
[en] Plato, Aristotle and the Neo-Platonists have traditionally been considered to be the main sources for interpreting Parmenides The Poem. However, in the last century, the logical and filological dilemmas regarding the concept of being have begun to draw the attention of other scholars seeking more precise interpretations of The Poem, such as ancient philosophy commentator Charles Kahn and analytical philosophers Frege and Russell. In this paper I will argue that philosophers Gorgias and Melisso offer a more accurate interpretation of the concept of being discussed in Parmenides original text. Consequently, it will also be shown that in order to understand precisely The Poem, it is necessary to focus on the interpretations drawn by the two pre-Socratic philosophers supra-cited regarding the Poem, rather than to emphasize on the analysis made by Plato and Aristotle. The main reason supporting this argument that will be presented is that the works of such pre-Socratic philosophers were written in a time period much closer to the one of Parmenides than the works of Plato and Aristotle were. In order to build my argument I will first analyze the filological meanings of the concept of being. Then I will scrutinize the formulations of this concept as Kahn presents them. After that, I will examine the formulations of the concept of being in the works of both Melisso and Gorgias. Finally, I will compare and apply all of these formulations and meanings to Parmenides original text, and therefore conclude my argument.

The Organic Imagination and Louis Kahn

Esenwein, Frederick 10 May 2011 (has links)
This thesis investigates the relationship between architecture, Romanticism, American Transcendentalism, myth, and religious mysticism in the ideas of the American architect, Louis Kahn. Part One builds a chronology from Hermeticism and Jewish mysticisms into German Romanticism and how they played a role in the world of Kahn's parents shortly before his birth. The first chapter looks at mysticism and how it resonates with Kahn's descriptions of silence and light. The second chapter outlines the transition from rational aesthetics during the German Enlightenment into German Romanticism. This exposes the beginning of organicism as a way of seeing the world as a growth from a mythic image towards a physical manifestation made by artists and poets. In chapter three, the ideas from Romanticism inspire a philosophical and political movement for independence and cultural expression in the native region of Kahn's parents. Part Two concentrates on the American approach to Romanticism via Transcendentalism and how Transcendentalism influenced Kahn's childhood education in Philadelphia. It shows how the ideas of German Romanticism influenced English literature and criticism, especially Coleridge's theories of organicism and literary criticism. Chapter four presents how the American Transcendentalists correlated the mind and imagination to an organism. In chapter five, we see how Transcendentalism's aesthetic theory influenced the Public Industrial Arts School of Philadelphia's approach to teaching art. Louis Kahn attended this school. The final chapter deciphers Kahn's ideas, such as â form and design,â â material as spent light,â â measurable and unmeasurable,â â law and rule,â â order,â and â nature.â Within the framework of Romanticism and American Transcendentalism, these ideas become intelligible and an enriching approach to understand his architecture. / Master of Science

L’effervescence des images : les archives de la Planète d’Albert Kahn (1908-2018) / The Effervescence of Images : the Archives of the Planet by Albert Kahn (1908-2018)

Genoudet, Adrien 06 December 2018 (has links)
The main approach of this PhD is to focus on the visual project within Albert Kahn’s work and to broaden the scope by studying what will become of the films from the Archives of the Planet. To achieve this goal, the thesis draws on the whole administrative archives of the Albert Kahn Museum, on the archives of Albert Kahn and his numerous relatives, on the departmental and national archives and through investigations conducted in the archives of the INA (the National Institute for Audio-visual Media), art centres and the film’s archives. By first looking at the kahnian figure through the construction of Kahn’s contemporary and posthumous speeches, the thesis then takes a turn towards an analysis of the kahnian visual project. As it draws on thinkers contemporary to Kahn and on some of his writings, this second part attempts to grasp how the Archives of the Planet have been made possible and how they are embedded in a thinking, both global and specific, on images. Finally, the third part of this work first delves into the period when the films of the Archives of the Planet were “made available” from Albert Kahn’s death to the early 2000s, by drawing on the history of the museal institution and its satellites – such as the “Cinémathèque de Boulogne.” The third part then opens up the reflection by focusing on the futures of the Archives of the Planet and, by studying cases of appropriation of the kahnian films in external productions (Chris Marker, Abel Gance, Nicole Vedrès, Frédéric Rossif etc.) and on television.

Modeling of Fracture Toughness of Magnesium Alloy WE43 Before and After Friction Stir Processing

Lipscomb, Celena Andrea 12 1900 (has links)
Magnesium alloys are a popular research topic for structural applications because they have a lower density than conventional structural materials, including steel, titanium, and aluminum; however, the reliability and safety of their mechanical properties must be further proven. An important mechanical property for this purpose is fracture toughness, which is the measure of the material's resistance to crack propagation. In this study, a model of an experiment to investigate the fracture toughness of a magnesium alloy WE43 before and after friction stir processing (FSP) is developed, and the results are compared to those produced by a digital image correlation (DIC) system during an experiment from another paper. The model results of the material before FSP matched well with the DIC results, but the model of the material after FSP only partially matches the DIC results. In addition, a theoretical approach to calculating the standard fracture toughness value, KIc, from the modeling results is proposed, and is found to be a conservative approach.

Jacob-Wagner, Sarah 19 April 2018 (has links)
This thesis is about the media coverage of three scandals (“affaire Nagy”, “affaire Banon” and “affaire du Sofitel”) in which allegations of sexual violence were brought against Dominique Strauss-Kahn (DSK), former Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and French politician. Articles published in newspapers in France and the United States from 2008 to 2012, at the key moments of those scandals, were analyzed. From these, several conclusions were made. First, the framing of the events and of the protagonists changed over time. Second, many topics were debated in the context of those scandals, including feminism and the distinction between the public and the private. Third, similarities and differences were observed between the French and the American media. This thesis offers a reflection on the distinction between the public and the private and on “sex scandals”.

Concevoir l’international : le Comité national d’études sociales et politiques d’Albert Kahn, 1916-1931

Prévost-Grégoire, Florence 08 1900 (has links)
During the heat of the Great War, Albert Kahn, banker and philanthropist, founded the Comité national d’études sociales et politiques (CNESP). Bringing together members of the French elite, the CNESP held meetings every week until 1931, to hold intellectual discussions about current affairs. Even though the members were exclusively French, the committee invited a considerable number of international speakers. This thesis, whose fields of research are linked to those of intellectual history and international history, places emphasis on this committee’s interest in international topics and studies its conceptualization of internationalism during the interwar period. This survey of the CNESP’s meetings reveals that the committee had a vision of internationalism that was expressed on two different levels. First, the committee understood the international as an objective structure: the international system had to be organized around principles of law and international problems had to be resolved by the objective methods of science. Second, study of the subjective considerations behind those pretentions of objectivity reveals that the conceptualisation of internationalism was influenced by a strong belief in the universalism of French values. This conceptualisation of internationalism therefore implies dynamics of exclusion that are expressed more particularly through a metaphoric discourse linked to the family.

Growing up with Vertigo: British Writers, DC, and the Maturation of American Comic Books

Salisbury, Derek 19 September 2013 (has links)
At just under thirty years the serious academic study of American comic books is relatively young. Over the course of three decades most historians familiar with the medium have recognized that American comics, since becoming a mass-cultural product in 1939, have matured beyond their humble beginnings as a monthly publication for children. However, historians are not yet in agreement as to when the medium became mature. This thesis proposes that the medium’s maturity was cemented between 1985 and 2000, a much later point in time than existing texts postulate. The project involves the analysis of how an American mass medium, in this case the comic book, matured in the last two decades of the twentieth century. The goal is to show the interconnected relationships and factors that facilitated the maturation of the American sequential art, specifically a focus on a group of British writers working at DC Comics and Vertigo, an alternative imprint under the financial control of DC. The project consulted the major works of British comic scriptwriters, Alan Moore, Jamie Delano, Grant Morrison, Peter Milligan, Neil Gaiman, Warren Ellis, and Garth Ennis. These works include Watchmen, V for Vendetta, Shade: the Changing Man, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Animal Man, Sandman, Transmetropolitan, Preacher and several other important works. Following a chronological organization, the work tracks major changes taking place in the American comic book industry in the commercial, corporate, and creative sectors to show the processes through which the medium matured in this time period. This is accomplished by combining textual analysis of the comics with industry specific records and a focus on major cultural shifts in US society and culture

A qualidade espacial na obra de Louis I. Kahn

Lorentz, Rafael de Conti January 2016 (has links)
The present dissertation is as an analytical study about the work of architect Louis I. Kahn, focusing on its spatial quality, as funded in the interaction between space and people in motion. Three buildings were selected as case studies in order to capture the evolutionary synthesis of space conception happened during Kahn’s career. Each building was submitted to an empirical scrutiny based upon the spatial experience of a moving observer, using a set of tools named as the “method of the observer”. The buildings investigated are put in relation with other Kahn’s buildings, so allowing the development of an analytical discourse embracing since his first works, in the 1930’s, until his death, in 1974. The analysis registers the performance of the buildings in terms of their legibility and their functionality, both understood as qualities inherent to space and the way they shape the user’s experience, so relating them to the building’s spatial conception. The dissertation intends to enlarge the understanding of the findings by considering the evolution of Kahn’s theoretical work, so bringing cause-effect connections between theory and the registered phenomena in the concrete reality of buildings. Eventually, this study aims to enlarge the understanding of the link between Kahn’s work and the architectural environment of the time, so exploring the influences he received and contributions he gave, especially concerning the evolution of modern architecture.
