The introduction to the present study of Knut Hamsun's The Game of Life (Livets spil, 1896) sums up the strange failure of this play, a remarkable work by a famous author, to gain any measurable recognition; a number of possible reasons are suggested, among them the membership of Livets spil in the so-called Kareno-trilogy, the other two plays of which are rather weak. Plots of all three plays are provided. - The introductory chapter is followed by a general survey of Hamsun’s dramatic production. Considerable space is given to a comparison between the last of his six plays, In the Grip of Life (Livet ivold, 1910) and Wedekind's Der Marquis von Keith (1900). - The remaining two long chapters - Part Three and Four - are devoted to an exhaustive examination of Livets spil. In Part Three, the method used is that of an interpretative investigation; the main characters and symbols/symbolic forces of the play are analyzed in depth and correlated. Special consideration is given to the character constellation Teresita-Jens Spir, as compared to the constellation Edvarda-Glahn in Hamsun's famous novel Pan (1894). Finally, the consistency of the play with the general story line of the trilogy is demonstrated. - The method followed in Part Four is that of a dramatic-aesthetic close-reading. The focus here is on general dramatic effectiveness, and on the many special elements in the play which go into the creation of a fantastic universe on stage. Part A discusses three aspects of dramatic technique basic to the restless style of Livets spil. Special attention is given to the principle of external intrusion, the subtle disturbance of the dialogue from a source outside of the immediate sphere of action. Part B demonstrates the intrinsically fantastic nature of a large number of the play's primary and secondary elements: The basic premises from which the action derives, character appearances and the nature and function of props, the symbolic suggestiveness of light and sound effects, and the suggestive uses and implications of spatial distance. - Finally, in the conclusion, the two basic methods of analysis followed are confronted with each other, and it is demonstrated how Hamsun realized in Livets spil some of the goals he had set himself five years earlier in his advocacy of a more psychologically oriented modern literature in Norway. / Arts, Faculty of / English, Department of / Graduate

Nationella och internationella rapporter visar på hur svenska elevers kunskaper inom naturvetenskap sjunker och svenska lärare får kritik för sitt sätt att undervisa. KNUT är ett nationellt forskningsprojekt och ett av projektets mål är att få lärare att arbeta fram pedagogiska planer kring energi-, klimat- och resursfrågor i skolans naturvetenskap. Arbetet syftar till att undersöka vilket innehåll lärarna i KNUT- projektet väljer till de pedagogiska planerna utifrån ett naturvetenskapligt perspektiv. Forskning visar på ett antal dilemman med undervisningen i naturvetenskap. Elever och lärare har olika uppfattningar om vad problemet med undervisningen är och forskningen visar även att eleverna inte är överens med lärarna när det kommer till vilket innehåll undervisningen skall ha. De pedagogiska planerna analyserades med hjälp av innehållsanalys. Resultatet visar att de pedagogiska planerna har ett innehåll där elevernas erfarenheter finns med. Dock så syns en skillnader mellan olika skolområden och skolår. Elevernas intresseområden behandlas också i de pedagogiska planerna och även här syns skillnader mellan skolområden men även det innehållsliga skiljer sig åt. Lärarna i projektet visar i de pedagogiska planerna att det finns intentioner att samverka mellan olika ämnen och målnivåer och att det även här finns skillnader i innehåll och mellan skolområden. Utifrån frågeställningarna och arbetets syfte har lärarna lyckats med sina pedagogiska planer men det finns några lösa ändar. Detta arbete har belyst dessa aspekter men vidare forskning kring KNUT- projektet är önskvärt. / KNUT-projektet

This study aims to investigate Swedish newspaper’s takes and debates on professor Knut Wicksells outed opinions on reproductive restrictions and contraceptives. He, who was a liberal free thinker, endorsed contraceptives and claimed child restriction policy as a necessity for the welfare of the nation. He proposed these actions while calling himself a neo-malthusian. The study is performed by analyzing digitalized source materials of various Swedish newspapers from the Swedish Royal Library, Stockholmkällan and Project Runeberg. This was a controversial topic, which caused a temporary uproar during his most active years and startled a hot debate across the political spectrum during the Swedish fertility transition, as birth rates were starting to drop in the late 19th century. The study follows debate articles, chronicles and letters to editors of various newspapers that had lifted the subject and related it to different political goals.

La thèse en question trace un parcours comparatif sur les approches créatrices et technologiques qui ont été développées au GRM (Groupe de Recherches Musicales) et à l’EMS (Elektronmusikstudion) de 1965 à 1980. Cette recherche vise à étudier les interactions principales entre les concepts musicaux des pionniers des musiques électroacoustiques en France et en Suède, Pierre Schaeffer et Knut Wiggen et l’évolution des directions artistiques au sein de leur institutions. Notre étude sera traitée en fonction de deux approches méthodologiques empruntées par la linguistique, diachronique et synchronique : dans la première partie de la thèse, nous ferons une synthèse historique des genres musicaux qui ont influencé les directions artistiques du GRM et de l’EMS ainsi que la comparaison de leur organisation institutionnelle concernant la création musicale, la recherche technologique et les réflexions de Schaeffer et de Wiggen. Par la suite, la deuxième partie de la thèse porte sur l’analyse musicale des œuvres sélectionnées dans le corpus du GRM et de l’EMS. Cette étude synchronique s’appuie ainsi sur le problème de l’analyse des musiques acousmatiques. En suivant la théorie tripartite de J. Molino développée par J.J. Nattiez et S. Roy concernant les niveaux poïétique-neutre-esthésique d’une œuvre d’art, une reconstruction d’une trace visuelle est réalisée dans le cadre de l’analyse du niveau neutre au moyen des symboles graphiques de Lasse Thoresen inspiré par la typo-morphologie de Schaeffer. Les résultats tirés de cette analyse serviront de justification avec les données poïétiques externes pour la comparaison finale des significations hypothétiques des pièces. En conclusion, le but de cette thèse est d’explorer une méthode d’analyse inspirée par la sémiologie tripartite pour une meilleure compréhension des musiques acousmatiques et d’établir une documentation historique sur le(s) style(s) musicaux qui prédominent majoritairement les années 1960 et 1970 au GRM et à l’EMS en fonction du développement technologique. / The current research is a comparative study investigating the development of creative and technological approaches at GRM (Groupe de Recherches Musicales) and EMS (Elektronmusikstudion) from 1965 to 1980. The thesis examines the main interactions between two pioneers of electroacoustic music in France and in Sweden, namely, Pierre Schaeffer and Knut Wiggen and the evolution of artistic directions within their institutions. The comparative method borrows two main perspectives from linguistics, such as diachronic and synchronic. To this direction, the first part of the thesis evaluates a sort of historical synthesis of musical genres, which lead the artistic directions of those two studios, including their institutional organization, musical creation, technological research as well as Schaeffer’s and Wiggen’s musical concepts. The second part of the thesis focuses on pioneer works analysis in order to explore closely compositional ideas and the problem of acousmatic music analysis. The analysis method is based on Jean Molino’s tripartite theory developed by J.J. Nattiez (poietic/neutral/esthesic level of an art work) and Stéphane Roy, which contributes to analyze the compositional structure, organization and the composer’s style related to technological equipment of the studios. The first step of music analysis reconstructs a sort of transcription within the neutral level analysis by means of Lasse Thoresen’s graphical symbols inspired by Schaeffers’s typo-morphology. The second step seeks to confront the neutral level results with external poietic information in order to explore and to compare some hypothetical significations of analyzed musical pieces. In conclusion, the end goal is to determine a methodology inspired by the tripartite theory for an in-depth understanding of acousmatic music analysis and to establish a historical documentation on French and Swedish electroacoustic music within the development of technology.

The subject of this master thesis is a comparison of four Czech translations of Knut Hamsun's novel Hunger (Sult, 1890) - from 1902 (Hugo Kosterka), 1932 (Milada Lesná-Krausová), 1959 (Milada Lesná-Krausová) and 2016 (Helena Kadečková). The thesis consists of a theoretical part, dealing with the analysis of the original text and the historical context of trends in translation, and a practical part, analysing and comparing the translations. The aim of the thesis was to assess the adequacy of the translations and the correlation between the methods and the corresponding contemporaneous trends. As we expected, the language and methods applied in the translations correspond with the practices in the respective periods. In terms of the method consistency and thoroughness, the versions of Kosterka and Kadečková proved to be the most adequate.

Det här arbetet behandlar Dominick Argentos sångcykel The Andrée Expedition, ett verk som beskriver den historiska händelse i slutet av 1800-talet då tre svenskar med hjälp av luftballong försökte bli de första någonsin att ta sig till Nordpolen. Arbetet beskriver och utforskar den konstnärliga processen, instuderingen och framförandet av verket. Utgångspunkten ligger i den del av förberedelsearbetet som har skett innan den textliga och musikaliska instuderingen har påbörjats: utforskande och sammanställning av information som beskriver de tre personerna Salomon August Andrée, Knut Frænkel och Nils Strindberg. Syftet med arbetet är att utforska hur denna förberedelseprocess har påverkat framförandet av verket. Efter genomförda efterforskningar i texter och litteratur som behandlar dessa tre historiska personer har en karaktärsanalys genomförts. Denna analys har sedan satts i relation till det komponerade verket och således kompositörens tillvägagångssätt att beskriva och gestalta karaktärerna. Genom att utgå från dessa två förutsättningar har en tolkning av verket utkristalliserat sig. Studien har lett till slutsatser om värdet i att inte bara låta sig påverkas av impulser från det faktiska verket som ska framföras.
