Understanding the evolution of channeling and fracturing in tight rocks due to fast fluid flow / Comprendre l'évolution de la formation de canaux et de la fracturation des roches dures liée à l'écoulement à grande vitesse d'un fluide

Turkaya, Semih 10 November 2016 (has links)
Fluid induced brittle deformation of porous medium is a phenomenon commonly present in everyday life. From an espresso machine to volcanoes it is possible to see traces of this phenomenon. In a rectangular Hele‐Shaw cell we inject air into a loose porous medium. Then, we monitor this system using optical imaging using a high speed camera (1000 fps) and 4 high frequency resolution accelerometers. Using the numerical and experimental acoustic emissions, different sources of the recorded signal (vibrations due to air, changes in the effective stress due to fluid‐solid interactions) are analyzed. We found that, the peaks in the low frequency range (f < 20 kHz) diminishes while the medium fractures. Furthermore, we propose a new signal localization method based on energy amplitude attenuation and inversed source amplitude comparison. Furthermore, using optical and acoustic datasets and numerical simulations, the mechanics leading Type‐A and Type‐B earthquakes are explained.

[pt] INVERSÃO TEMPORAL DE ONDAS DE LAMB ACOUSTOELÁSTICAS / [en] TIME REVERSAL OF ACOUSTOELASTIC LAMB WAVES

05 June 2019 (has links)
[en] The acoustoelasticity studies the variation of the elastic waves velocity in bodies subject to an initial stress state. The acoustoelastic theory consists of non-linear relationship between stress and strain that rules the dynamic response superimposed to the initial pre-deformation. The acoustoelastic theory applied to guided waves is a very new branch of study. The theoretical development of this theory for Lamb waves was completed in 2012, which enabled the calculation of velocity variation as a function of stress. Lamb waves are elastic waves that propagate in plates obeying the boundary conditions on the surface. These waves are a priori dispersive. Finite Element Method (FEM) is an useful tool for ultrasonic waves propagation analysis. In order to address the acoustoelastic effect employing FEM one can use the effective elastic constants. By these effective constants it is possible to assemble an equivalent anisotropic stiffness tensor, which can be the material stiffness input in commercial software. The time reversal process is a well-known method for obtaining focused acoustic waves in both time and space. In the case of Lamb waves, the use of time-reversed signals compensates the dispersion of each propagation mode, recompressing the wave and producing a focused signal at the reception position. In this thesis the new branch of acoustoelasticity for Lamb waves is thoroughly analyzed and its state of the art is reviewed. The possibility of using effective elastic constants for determination of the velocity dependence on stress and the errors in this approximation are investigated. The use of FEM in Ansysr is validated for single mode under uniaxial tensile stress. Then, the simulations of wideband multi-mode acoustoelastic Lamb waves is carried out in the numerical software, the time-reversal focusing ability is verified and the effect of uniaxial load on the focus is investigated. Finally, experiments were performed in an aluminum plate longitudinally loaded. The feasibility of using the time reversal focus characteristics in order to measure the strain is concluded and its limitations are pointed out.

Effets d’une hyperbilirubinémie modérée sur la physiologie de la déglutition nutritive et de la coordination déglutition-respiration chez l’agneau prématuré / Effect of moderate hyperbilirubinemia on nutritive swallowing and swallowing-breathing coordination in the preterm lamb

Bourgoin-Heck, Mélisande January 2016 (has links)
Abstract : Rationale: Jaundice, secondary to hyperbilirubinemia (HB), develops in 90% of preterm newborns. HB induces acute neurological disorders (somnolence, abnormal tone, feeding difficulties, auditory dysfunction) and has been linked to alterations in respiratory control. These findings suggest neurotoxicity in the brainstem that could also affect swallowing centers. This study aims to test our hypothesis that HB impairs nutritive swallowing and swallowing‐breathing coordination in the preterm lamb. Methods: Two groups of preterm lambs (born 14 days prior to term), control (C, n = 6) and hyperbilirubinemia (HB, n = 5) were studied. At day 5 of life, moderate HB (150‐250 μmol/L) was induced during 17 h in HB lambs. Swallowing was assessed via recording of pharyngeal pressure, and respiration was studied by respiratory inductance plethysmography and pulsed oximetry. HB effect on nutritive swallowing was assessed during standardized bottle‐feeding with ewe milk. A second recording was performed 48 hours later, after recovery from hyperbilirubinemia. Results: Swallows were less frequent (p = 0.003) and of smaller volume (p = 0.01) in HB lambs, with a consequent decrease in minute swallowing in HB lambs (p = 0,004). These differences were not found after bilirubinemia was returned to normal. Swallowing‐breathing coordination was also impaired in HB lambs, as indicated by a tendency towards a decrease in % time with respiratory inhibition during bursts of swallows, during and after hyperbilirubinemia. Simultaneously, severe desaturations (< 80%) were longer in HB lambs than in C lambs. Finally, a decreased respiratory rate was observed immediately after feeding (p < 0,05), along with increased apneas duration. Conclusions: Both swallowing and swallowing‐breathing coordination are altered by acute, moderate HB in preterm lambs. The overall decreased efficiency at bottle‐feeding is accompanied by continuation of breathing during bursts of swallows, which may promote lung aspiration.

Fourier-based design of acoustic transducers

Carrara, Matteo 27 May 2016 (has links)
The work presented in this thesis investigates novel transducer implementations that take advantage of directional sensing and generation of acoustic waves. These transducers are conceived by exploiting a Fourier-based design methodology. The proposed devices find application in the broad field of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM), which is a very active research area devoted to the assessment of the structural integrity of critical components in aerospace, civil and mechanical systems. Among SHM schemes, Guided Waves (GWs) testing has emerged as a prominent option for inspection of plate-like structures using permanently attached piezoelectric transducers. GWs-based methods rely on the generation and sensing of elastic waves to evaluate structural integrity. They offer an effective method to estimate location, severity and type of damage. It is widely acknowledged among the GWs-SHM community that effective monitoring of structural health is facilitated by sensors and actuators designed with ad hoc engineered capabilities. The objective of this research is to design innovative piezoelectric transducers by specifying their electrode patterns in the Fourier domain. Taking advantage of the Fourier framework, transducer design procedures are outlined and tailored to relevant SHM applications, such as (i) directional actuation and sensing of GWs, (ii) simultaneous sensing of multiple strain components with a single device, and (iii) estimation of the location of impact sites on structural components. The proposed devices enable significant reductions in cost, hardware, and power requirements for advanced SHM schemes when compared to current technologies.

Étude des réflexes cardiorespiratoires d'origine oesophagienne chez l'agneau nouveau-né sans sédation / Cardiorespiratory reflexes originating from stimulation of the esophagus in non sedated newborn lambs

Nault, Stéphanie January 2016 (has links)
Abstract : Introduction : The relationship between vagal reflexes originating from the esophagus and cardiorespiratory events in neonates (apneas, bradycardias, O[subscript 2] desaturations) remains a controversial subject. Previous studies in an a esthetized adult animals have shown that stimulation of esophagal chemo- or mechanoreceptors may cause various reflexes (Jadcherla, 2012). In addition, the involvement of C-fiber endings in some of those reflexes has been suggested (Lang et al., 2001). Considering that many uncertainties remain about these reflexes, especially in the neonatal period, the goals of this study were to i) characterize the cardiorespiratory reflexes observed when a gastroesophageal reflux is mimicked; ii) determine the effect of the stimulation site on the amplitude of those reflexes; iii) determine whe ther C-fibers are involved. Methods: Eight newborn lambs were surgically instrumented; 48 hours later, two separate polysomnographic recordings were performed without sedation before and after permanent C-fiber blockade (Diaz et al., 2000). Five randomized stimulations were performed to mimic a gastroesophageal reflux at different levels of the esophagus. Results: Esophageal stimulations cause cardiorespiratory inhibitory reflexes. Double stimulation causes more important reflexes, including bradycardia and apnea. The cardiorespiratory inhibition response was less marked after permanent and selective blockade of C-fibers by capsaicïne. Conclusion: My experimental results show, for the first time, a relationship between esophageal vagal reflexes and cardiorespiratory events in a neonatal, non-sedated animal and suggest some involvement of C-fiber endings. Results also suggest that proximal gastroesophageal refluxes generate more important reflexes.

The effects of different selenium sources on the meat quality and bioavailability of selenium in lamb

Esterhuyse, Jacobus Johannes 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScAgric)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In many parts of the world, soil is depleted of selenium (Se), leading to selenium-poor plants, animals and, therefore, humans. It was recognised that a study to examine the functionality of new products on the market to address this problem was required. The purpose of this research were threefold: to compare the effects of sodium selenite (NaSe) and organically bound selenium sources on small ruminant performance, to investigate the bioavailability of these Se sources, and analyse their influence on carcass characteristics, meat quality and antioxidant capabilities. Fourty growing Döhne Merino wethers from the Southern Cape region, a selenium-deficient area, were used for the study. The animals were all fed the same basal diet in the adaptation period and were then allocated to one of four treatment groups: Control (CT), inorganic selenium (IS), organically bound Se A (OSA) or B: (OSB). The period of supplementation was 90 days. This first study assessed the effect of the different Se sources on growth and Se bioavailability in the wethers. The wethers and the feed they consumed were regularly weighed to determine their growth and feed conversion rate (FCR) in the trial period. To gauge their Se level, blood samples were collected via jugular venipuncture at monthly intervals. The wool around the jugular was shorn and samples were collected on day 0 and day 90 for comparative Se level analysis. Liver, skeletal muscle and kidney samples were collected at day 90, directly after slaughter, to determine the Se level in these tissues. No effect could be reported in the growth and FCR of the wethers between the supplementation groups. For whole blood Se levels there was an effect in the early part of the study, with a greater increase in Se levels for the organically bound Se groups, but in the end no effect on whole blood levels could be seen between the different Se treatments. Neither could any difference between the inorganic Se and organic bound Se treatments be found in the liver – however, the total Se concentration of the wool, kidney and meat samples was greater in those animals offered organically bound Se when compared with those receiving a comparable dose of inorganic Se. The second study evaluated the antioxidant capabilities of the different Se supplements in the wethers. Blood samples were taken monthly for plasma collection to test for Glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity and total antioxidative capacity (TAC) with the oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) assay. Liver, skeletal muscle and kidney samples were collected at day 90, immediately after slaughter and measured for GSH-Px activity. With TAC, there was a significant effect for the treatment period between day 0 and day 90, however the treatments did not show any significant difference. No significant differences could be established between the different Se treatments for the GSH-Px analysis in any of the tissues. For the mean plasma values of the treatments no significant differences can be reported, but a significant difference was observed at day 30 in the contrast between the organically bound Se and the other treatment groups. The third study was to evaluate the quality and lipid oxidation of muscle from those wethers supplemented with different Se sources. Skeletal muscle samples were collected at day 90, directly after slaughter to determine this. No differences in the meat quality of the wethers could be detected between Se sources after the 90-day supplementation period. Lipid oxidation was measured by determining TBA reactive substances (TBARS) and once again no differences could be detected. Based on the results found in this investigation, it may be inferred that organically bound Se (OSA & OSB) supplementation will hold a number of advantages for small ruminants over inorganic Se supplementation. Animals fed the organically bound Se had reached adequate Se levels sooner on the organically bounded treatments than the inorganically bounded treated animals. The greater bioavailability of organically bounded Se over inorganic Se was proven by the increased Se levels in certain tissues and organs. Additionally, only the organically bounded Se could find a pathway to the wool, confirming that it was carried in an organic form (probably selenomethionine) in the body. Organically bound Se will therefore have a positive impact on small ruminant health and production, which will result in an indirect advantage for consumer health.

Investigation into the semiochemical communication involved in neonatal offspring recognition in sheep

Viviers, Marlize Zaretha 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (PhD (Chemistry and Polymer Science))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010. / Video 1: Twin-bearing Döhne Merino ewe butting only one of her lambs in typical rejection behavior. Rejection of one twin is not a common phenomenon. (Video by Dr Marlize Viviers) / Video 2: Twin-bearing ewe # 22 accepting alien lamb # 179. The alien lamb wears a jacket her other lamb has been wearing for the preceding 24 hours. The excessive sniffing at the jacket, bleating and looking around show that the ewe is not totally satisfied with the situation. (Video by Dr Marlize Viviers) / Video 3: Ewe # 22 rejecting alien lamb # 179 after removal of the jacket it has worn in the previous video. (Video by Dr Marlize Viviers) / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Sheep husbandry substantially contributes to South Africa’s economy. Lamb mortality is regarded as a major constraint to sustainable sheep production, and an important factor in lamb survival is the strong ewe–lamb bonding. This is a well-known phenomenon in all sheep races and strong evidence exists that the selective ewe–lamb bond formation has a pheromonal basis, in that the ewe can distinguish her lamb by its unique, familiar smell. Sheep farmers and scientists have examined various methods of making alien lambs acceptable to foster ewes. The survival rate of offspring could be substantially increased if a reliable method could be devised to prevent ewes from rejecting their own lambs or if ewes could be induced to accept alien lambs. A better understanding of the semiochemicals involved in this communication between ewe and offspring could facilitate the development of a method by which ewes can be coaxed into adopting foster lambs. This would positively contribute to efficient sheep production in South Africa. The objective of this study was to characterise the volatile constituents present in the wool and the amniotic fluid collected from the Döhne Merino lambs to achieve a better understanding of the ewe–lamb semiochemical communication. The volatile organic constituents associated with the wool and amniotic fluid were characterised and a total of 133 volatile organic compounds were identified. Several compound classes are represented in these samples and the majority of these compounds have previously been identified in the excretions and secretions of numerous mammalian species. A number of different aspects of ewe–lamb kin recognition were investigated. First, the odour profiles of twin lambs were compared to those of other twins. The results of these analyses revealed that the wool volatiles of twin lambs are qualitatively as well as quantitatively practically identical, but different from those of other lambs in the flock. Second, the change in the odour profiles of lambs was studied over a seven-day period. It was found that the odour profiles of lambs are not fixed, and for as long as a ewe makes use of olfactory recognition as the main mode of identification of her lamb she has to continue learning the odour of her lamb. Third, the amniotic fluid was investigated as a possible source of maternal labels, i.e. as chemical codes consisting of mixtures of compounds in specific quantitative ratios that are imprinted on lambs by their mothers at birth. It was found that the amniotic fluids of first- and second-born lambs are qualitatively and quantitatively different. It is possible that the duration of the lambing birth process could contribute to this change in amniotic fluid composition. Fourth, the role of residual proteins in the dissemination of the semiochemicals involved in ewe– lamb communication was investigated and six proteins were identified as amniotic fluid and wool-associated proteins. Bioassays carried out during the lambing season of 2009 confirmed the role of the odour of the lamb in ewe-lamb recognition, but bioassays carried out with synthetic pheromone formulations gave inconclusive results. Dieselfde verbindings asook 'n verdere 63 verbindings is in lammerwol geïdentifiseer.

Morvan, Bruno 15 November 2010 (has links) (PDF)
