Les réceptions européennes de Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840) avant la Centennale de Berlin (1906) / The European receptions of Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840) before the Berliner Jahrhundertausstellung (1906)

Vroemen, Elisabeth 09 January 2017 (has links)
According to traditional historiography, Caspar David Friedrich was almost forgotten during several decades following his death in Dresden in 1840. Little known outside his native Germany, it is often said that he was rediscovered through the great retrospective of German nineteenth century art, the Berliner Jahrhundertausstellung, in 1906. The first biography of the artist published in the twentieth century, God, Freedom, Fatherland (Gott, Freiheit, Vaterland, 1915) by the Norwegian art historian, Andreas Aubert, draws attention on the patriotic orientation of some of his paintings. This thesis proposes to discuss different aspects of the reception of his oeuvre, not only in the German, but in the European context of the 19th century. If the painter was not recognized by the historians, he emerged, mainly thanks to his German-scandinavian Pomeranian culture, as a model among Scandinavian artists, who came largely through personal contact with Friedrich himself or via his neighbour and friend, the Norwegian painter J. C. C. Dahl. In the heart of intense debates in Germany and Scandinavia, landscape painting became a subject of political interest. This thesis is pointing the heritage of Friedrich aesthetics in the birth of Nordic painting traditions, beyond resonances and visual affinities between works. Following this itinerary through Nordic countries, reaching France, permits to question again the reception of Friedrich in French artistic milieux, where he never was on public display.

Vertikály krajiny / Vertical motives of landscape

HORYNOVÁ, Alžběta January 2010 (has links)
This final work is practically oriented. It consists of painting series of eight landscapes with vertical themes. These are large format oil paintings. In the theoretical part I deal with the current perception of the relationship between man and land, which is based on the current concepts of landscape-painting. The examples of contemporary Czech landscape show some topics that have appeared in the last forty years. For example it is a landscape as a specific interface and abstract paintings, a landscape inside us, a landscape of our civilization. The thesis also discusses vertical motif, which marks the space between the two main elements of the landscape ? the sky and land, which is a fundamental area of human existence.

Modernidade, tradição e caráter nacional na obra de Alberto da Veiga Guignard / Modernity, tradition and national character in the work of Alberto da Veiga Guignard

Taisa Helena Pascale Palhares 11 March 2011 (has links)
This thesis aims to analyze the relationship between modern language, artistic tradition, national character and lyricism in the work of the artist Alberto da Veiga Guignard (1896-1962). It seeks to understand how the singular space of his works is built from the deepening of its sources and influences. This is characterized mainly by its ambiguous spatiality, in-between the illusionistic depth of traditional art and the flatness of modern painting, becoming one of the defining aspects of Guignards production. Our approach does not intend to be chronological. Rather, it seeks to explain how, throughout his career, many aesthetic elements are repeated until they reach a high level of synthesis in landscape paintings dated from early 1950s until the end of his life. Firstly, we investigate the early critical reception of Guignards oeuvre, still marked by a strong nationalistic interpretation, in order to highlight its defining characteristics, despite of its subject. Thereafter we examine his training period in Europe aiming to clarify possible relationships between his work and the artistic production of that time. We also point out the poetic dialogues he establishes with relevant issues of the Brazilian artistic milieu of the 1930s and 1940s, especially the revaluation of popular imagery. From our point of view, his landscape painting respond in a dialectical way to the peculiar dynamics of Modernism in Brazil, establishing themselves as privileged moments for its understanding

The following step consists on the analysis of the artist's production under the practice of his serial paintings due to the possibility of identification of a frequent repetition of motives in the painter's works. From this point, we evaluate the series 'barcos ao seco' released by the painter throughout his career and which includes the paintings mentioned previously. Finally, we focus on the period in which the artist exhibited in São Paulo and the relationship established in the cultural environment of the city. This course was necessary for a deeper comprehension of the painter's production in São Paulo as well as his importance in the forming cultural class. Therefore we intend, throughout the chosen paintings, to notice the importance of Castagneto in the both sea and landscape production context and in the Brazilian artistic class / Mestrado / Historia da Arte / Mestre em História da Arte

Landscape and identity : three artists/teachers in British Columbia

Beer, Ruth Sulamith 11 1900 (has links)
In this interdisciplinary study, narrative portraiture is used as a methodology to depict three visual artists who draw on their lived experience, traditions and values to engage viewers, through their artwork, about issues of landscape and identity. I argue for an educative paradigm applied to art practice that seeks individual and social/cultural transformation within and across communities through pedagogical processes that recognize diverse audiences. Questions guiding this study are: How do the artists' ideas and practices relate to living in British Columbia and the representation of the land? What are their motivations and strategies for expressing those ideas? How are the roles of these artists and the roles of teachers linked? The study considers the ways in which Jin-me Yoon, Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun and Marian Penner Bancroft foreground landscape in British Columbia as a complex phenomenon and as a powerful icon in Canadian culture. Through interviews and analysis of artwork, this study examines how these artist/pedagogues challenge artistic conventions, myths and historical narratives that have framed Western culture and influenced their experience. By employing and disrupting conventions of representations of the land, they construct new narratives concerned with issues of identity, the environment, Native land claims, and urban history. This research portrait of artists who attempt to inscribe a place for themselves and their communities within the life of the province, is also a portrait of 'place', or the complex interrelationship of people and the environment. As role models and spokespersons who link knowledge and culture, the artists share a desire'to foster understanding through postmodern art practices and dialogic pedagogical processes. This study acknowledges their dual role as artist and teacher, involving models of practice that aim to effect social change and environmental care. It examines how their work integrating art and education, reflects and attempts to shape the social, cultural and political landscape within shifting conditions of society today. This study aims to provide a greater understanding of artist/pedagogues and calls for an increased focus on a pedagogical role for artists in museums, schools and other community-based sites, particularly with respect to multicultural and environmental art education. / Education, Faculty of / Curriculum and Pedagogy (EDCP), Department of / Graduate
