A Social Influences Framework Related to College Student Learning Failures

Proctor, Keith R. 01 April 2017 (has links)
This dissertation explored ways that college students reflectively described the social influences related to their learning failures. This exploration was conducted using semi-structured interviews and Stake's multiple case analysis method. The findings from the interviews were used to develop a framework that describes the key social influence attributes of the learning failure experiences. The key attributes of the framework include: (a) roles, (b) context, and (c) phases. Each key attribute is discussed in detail. The framework serves as the means for exploring several related strands of research related to learning failure in a cohesive way, potentially enriching our understanding of these experiences. This improved understanding may lead to improved intervention designs and advisement strategies that could improve learning outcomes for students.

Cloete, Hendrika 01 January 2002 (has links)
The purpose of this research is to establish the extrinsic and intrinsic causes of learning failure with specific reference to schools in the Windhoek municipal area and to make recommendations to counteract learning failure. Learning failure and grade failing are disconcertingly high in schools in the Windhoek municipal area. After the Ministry of Education implemented the semi-automatic promotion system, grade failing decreased, but learning failure increased because learners are promoted without achieving success in a prior grade. According to the literature study, the causes of learning failure are to be found in the home, the school, the environment, and the learner. Similarities regarding the causes of learning failure were found in the empirical investigation and the literature study. To counteract these causes • teachers should be better trained • parents should become more aware of their role in the learning success of their children • more school buildings and teachers are needed to limit class sizes.

Log Analysis for Failure Diagnosis and Workload Prediction in Cloud Computing / Analys av loggfiler för feldiagnos och skattning av kommande belastning i system för molntjänster

Hunt, Kristian January 2016 (has links)
The size and complexity of cloud computing systems makes runtime errors inevitable. These errors could be caused by the system having insufficient resources or an unexpected failure in the system. In order to be able to provide highly available cloud computing services it is necessary to auto- mate the resource provisioning and failure diagnosing processes as much as possible. Log files are often a good source of information about the current status of the system. In this thesis methods for diagnosing failures and predicting system workload using log file analysis are presented and the performance of different machine learning algorithms using our proposed methods are compared. Our experimental results show that classification tree and random forest algorithms are both suitable for diagnosing failures and that Support Vector Regression outperforms linear regression and regression trees when predicting disk availability and memory usage. However, we conclude that predicting CPU utilization requires further studies.

The Complex Nature of Learning Failure: A Student Perspective

Proctor, Keith R. 20 March 2014 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this study was to explore how college students reflectively describe their learning failure experiences, along with the major themes of those experiences. Through a series of in-depth interviews, four narrative cases written from the perspective of two college students were developed. These four cases were then carefully analyzed and cross-examined to generate a deeper understanding of college student learning failures. This study explored approximately 78 themes related to these four cases, which led to the development of six key components of college student learning failure experiences: Recognizing Learning Failures, Evaluating Learning Failures, Attributions for Learning Failures, Self-Discovery Through Learning Failure, Past Experience and Future Expectations, and Social Influence. These components helped to define an initial framework for guiding future research into college student learning failure experiences.

The periodical was considered the printed matter representative of the Brazilian Psycho pedagogy history, mostly because of the important role that is has played in the formation process of the psycho pedagogies and in the Psycho pedagogy as knowledge area in the Education field. In this research was used as theoretical reference Pierre Bourdieu s concept of field. This author understands field as a space in which it is established a competition relation. The dispute in this competition is the one for the authority monopolization and the scientific knowledge about the theme (Bourdieu, 1983). This research aim is the understanding of the printed matter as strategy for the constitution of the Psycho pedagogy as study area inside the Education field. The periodical is taken as research object and is been analyzed as dispositive to normatize the Psycho pedagogy practice, at the same time it is considered as a material support that permits to amplify the discussion within the Education field from a Psycho pedagogical point of view / Este trabalho foi desenvolvido sobre o periódico Psicopedagogia Revista da Associação Brasileira de Psicopedagogia, no período compreendido entre 1982 a 2006.
