The Governance of Olympic Games Legacy

Leopkey, Becca 11 January 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to understand the governance of Olympic Games legacy. Legacy is broadly described as “all planned and unplanned, positive and negative, intangible and tangible structures created by and for a sport event that remain for a longer time than the event itself” (Preuss, 2007a, p. 86). The specific objectives of this study were: a) to map the historical evolution of legacy throughout the modern Olympic Movement (OM) (i.e., 1896-current day) in order to contextualize and conceptualize the major trends (e.g., changes in legacy, network actors/stakeholders, governance structures and processes) over time; b) to understand, explain, and compare/contrast the network governance of Olympic legacy, using Australian and Canadian case settings; and c) to critically analyze the overall structure and process of the governance of legacy within the OM focusing specifically on the aspects of performance, transparency, accountability, and participation to build a framework and provide policy recommendations for the governance of legacy in mega-events. In order to accomplish these objectives, a historical review of legacy within the OM and two descriptive case studies (Sydney 2000 and Vancouver 2010) were built using interviews and archival materials. Findings showed how the growth of the Games has culminated in the increased use and importance of legacy, leading to greater concept complexity. This resulted in the emergence of several trends including: new legacy themes, heightened interconnectedness, and formalization of governance mechanisms. Institutional theory was then applied to further explore the emergence of legacy and its habitualization, objectification, and sedimentation as an accepted norm in the Olympic Field. The examination of the legacy governance networks in the two cases showed four legacy network governance phases: legacy conceptualization, legacy planning and implementation, legacy transfer, and post-Games legacy governance, as well as a number of governance mechanisms (e.g., contracts, policies) that had an impact on the overall governance of the event’s legacy. Finally, a critical analysis of the governance of Olympic Games legacy was completed. The end result of the research project was a theoretical framework detailing the levels and fluidity of legacy governance in the OM.

ALRPC: a mechanism to semi-automatically refactor legacy applications for deployment in distributed environments

Bergen, Andreas Christoph 12 April 2013 (has links)
Scientific projects, businesses, and individual devices such as smart phones, tablets and embedded devices are collecting and retaining unparalleled and growing amounts of data. Initially, spatial locality of the data (collocation of data and application) cannot be assumed and local resource constraints impact monolithic legacy applications. Resource restrictions and less feasible approaches such as moving large data sets within these paradigms are not feasible for certain legacy applications. As such we have taken a renewed look at Remote Procedure Call mechanisms and designed, built and evaluated a RPC mechanism called Automated Legacy system Remote Procedure Call generator (ALRPC). ALRPC allows us to convert monolithic applications into distributed systems by selectively and semi-automatically moving individual functions to different process spaces. This improves spatial locality and resource constraints of critical functions in legacy applications. Empirical results from our initial experiments show that our mechanism’s level of automation outperforms existing industry strength tools and its performance is competitive within the scope of this work. / Graduate / 0984

JMS communication : Communicating with a legacy JMS broker using JavaScript

Bylund, Patrick January 2017 (has links)
The objective of this thesis is to research how to use JavaScript to communicate with a legacy JMS broker, specifically OpenMQ 4.1 and implementing a proof- of-concept of this. This proof-of-concept should be able to send and receive JMS messages. The necessary preparations for designing this application was to research possible ways of communicating with different JMS brokers using oth- er languages than Java. This research showed that the only viable method in or- der to communicate with this version of OpenMQ is to create a Java bridge be- tween JavaScript and the JMS broker. The results shows that it's possible to use JavaScript to communicate with OpenMQ 4.1 by using a Java Bridge together with NodeJS. This result is performed by making an integration test, by first sending a message with a certain ID to the API and then receiving a response at the intended response destination with the same ID. The front-end of the proof- of-concept provides a web application UI for performing this integration test. Future improvements of this implementation can be done by extending the Java Bridge and API in such a way that it can be used against many different JMS brokers. The configuration data used can also be stored in more reliable ways, if multiple users are using the API and web application at the same time, for example by using a database instead of JSON files.

The divergence between contemporary art and the museological conventions that has persisted for some decades, can be explained by the fact that the modern museum has become inadequate in relation to the present artistic production. In this dissertation we intend to discuss the museum¿s assimilation of Lygia Clark and Helio Oiticica¿s art works, considering both artist¿s critical view of the traditional space ¿ where the spectator is placed in the passive position of receptor ¿ and their proposition of a dynamic and dialogical relation between artist, work and spectator. Thus, we aim at discussing the manners in which these works are presented in a space traditionally hostile to the questions raised by these artists / Mestrado / Mestre em Artes

The Role of Dissolved Organic Matter on the Mobilization of Arsenic from a Legacy Mine Tailings Site

Bozeman, Lauren R., Bozeman, Lauren R. January 2018 (has links)
Legacy mine sites are of concern due to their prevalence and associated environmental and human health risks. The United States Bureau of Land Management estimates as many as 500,000 abandoned mine sites in the US (BLM, 2017). Sites requiring costly management and long-term response to the environmental hazardous risks can be designated to a National Priority List (NPL) by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA) (EPA, 2017). One such site, located in Central Arizona, is the Iron King Mine Humboldt Smelter Superfund Site (IKMHSSS). The site was designated to the NPL in 2008 due to concerns regarding the size of the tailing pile, the proximity of contaminated materials to the town of Dewey-Humboldt and waterways, and the dangerous concentrations of arsenic (As) and lead (Pb) of the tailings (EPA, 2017). Remediation efforts have been ongoing since the designation of the site to the NPL, including sampling, yard soil removal, and distribution of information to the local community regarding risks from the site. The University of Arizona Superfund Research Program (UA SRP) has conducted greenhouse and phytostabilization studies of the site in an attempt to understand the processes and mechanisms employed to stabilize the tailings materials as well as reduce dust emissions from the tailings to the town of Dewey-Humboldt (Gil-Loaiza et al., 2016). This effort has successfully demonstrated a reduction of dust emissions (Sáez, 2016), however chemical changes to the tailings due to phytostabilization are the focus of this research. This work attempts to ascertain whether adverse effects from the method of phytostabilization are observed in the pore waters of the tailing material, in particular the potential for contamination of water sources by mobilized As through chemical or microbiological means. Recent studies have proposed potential mechanisms that can promote mobilization of As by dissolved organic matter (DOM) (Mladenov et al., 2015). Heterotrophic microbial respiration under O2 limited conditions can cause the reduction of Fe3+ to Fe2+, enhancing desorption or dissolution of As from Fe containing minerals (Hasan et al., 2007). Additionally, DOM competes with As for sorption sites at mineral surfaces (Grafe et al., 2002). In this study, batch and column experiments were used to investigate the mechanisms of sequestration and release of As in compost amended mine tailings. Mine tailings were reacted in triplicate in the presence and absence of DOM using plain tailings and radiated tailings for microbiological control and under anoxic and oxic conditions at timescales from ranging from 3 to 900 hours for batch experiments and 1 to 900 pore volumes in column experiments. The highest As release to pore waters was observed under anoxic conditions in the presence of DOM both with microbial activity inhibited and uninhibited through 60Co gamma irradiation after 3 and 910 h of reaction. The release of As from batch experiments was lowest in the control treatment with no DOM added to tailings in both anoxic and oxic treatments after 24 h. Column flow-through experiments were also carried out to better understand the kinetic biogeochemistry of the tailings interacting with DOM. Columns were completed under suboxic conditions to best mimic field scenarios. To test the effect of microbes, control tailing samples were sterilized by 60Co gamma irradiation prior to flowing DOM. Pore volumes (PV) were collected using fractionation equipment from 1 to 900 PVs. The release of As was highest in the presence of DOM after approximately 40 PVs when As release began increasing to its maximum release of 50 μmol l-1. No significant difference between irradiated and non-irradiated tailings was observed in either irradiated or non-irradiated tailings. Lowest release of As to effluent solutions was in the absence of DOM. These results were consistent with the findings from batch experiments. Batch and column experiments show that DOM influences the mobilization of As from mine tailings, and demonstrates the potential risk to proximal ground water resources in the absence of attenuation processes between the oxidized tailings and groundwater.

Ontologibaserat dokumenthanteringssystem implementerad som datakatalog i legacymiljö

Jonsson, John January 2004 (has links)

Nové instituty dědického práva v komparaci se švýcarskou právní úpravou / New institutions of inheritance law in comparison with the swiss law

Müllerová, Monika January 2015 (has links)
1 New institutions of inheritance law in comparison with the Swiss law Abstract The new legislation of the civil code no 89/2012, brings major changes to the Czech inheritance law. Institutes, that has been traditionally part of most of the European countries has been after decades reintroduced into the Czech legal system. Moreover there are also institutes, which are completely new. These institutes are namely inheritance contract, legacy, renouncement of inheritance, surrender of inheritance, alienation of inheritance and codicil. This thesis aims to describe these institutes in detail, including their historical background. The new inheritance law legislation has been mostly influenced by the legislation effective in Czechoslovakia during 1920s and 1930s, meaning ABGB - the Austrian Civil code enacted in 1811. Also parts of the draft of a new civil code from 1937 were used as a template, as well as current civil codes of other European countries, as for example the German BGB or the Swiss ZGB. For the purpose of a legal comparison, this thesis contains also a brief description of the Swiss legislation concerning the above mentioned institutes.

Mind the Deadline : Exploring Young Adults’ Reflections on Life and Mortality in Relation to Digital Legacy

Pyttel, Miriam January 2021 (has links)
While most people usually tend to avoid thinking about their death, it can be beneficial to reflect on it. As technology is further integrated in our lives, HCI needs to consider that users eventually die. A concrete example for this concern is digital legacy. From a perspective of existential HCI and Thanatosensitivity, this thesis explores how young adults experience their own mortality and how they might be encouraged to reflect on their lives by engaging in their digital legacy. Subsequently, this exploration led to conducting expert interviews, sending out cultural probes, and sharing a collaborative matrix. Synthesizing and ideating on the gathered material concluded in a low-fidelity prototype that was tested by six users. The initial user feedback and individual workshops with three participants led to further explorations in the form of two workshops – one for ideation, the other for analysis. The thesis concludes in a series of conceptual design proposals that act as ground for discussion with implications for design opportunities and future research alongside an analysis of key findings.
