Paradigm shift in evangelism : a study of the need for contextualization in the mission of Southern Baptists

Johnson, Ronald Wayne 06 1900 (has links)
This thesis addresses a needed shift of paradigm for mission and evangelism within the Southern Baptist Convention. The current model lacks appropriate contextualization in a postmodern world. The proposition of the thesis is that a kingdom model for mission and evangelism is more appropriate for Southern Baptists' commitment to mission. The methodology of this thesis was researching primary and secondary sources, interviews with persons currently involved within the mission of Southern Baptists, evaluation of empirical data, and testing of concepts. In Chapter One, the validity of this thesis is presented with the proposition, the limitations, the purpose, the practical nature, and the modus operandi of the thesis stated. Chapter Two explores the problems of evangelism within the mission of Southern Baptists today. Focus is on empirical statistical evidence and the failure of assumptions, methods, and models currently in practice. Chapter Three examines the birth of the mission and evangelism mandate of Southern Baptists and the subsequent development of a monolithic structure unchanged to the present day. Chapter Four traces the evolution of evangelistic witness within the early church and explores the cultural dynamics of the period. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / D. Th.

Alves, Bruno Oliveira 17 April 2015 (has links)
This research investigates how photography, present in photo reportages made by Jean Manzon and José Medeiros in the magazine O Cruzeiro, contributed to representation of urban ways of life in Brazil during the passage of the 1940s to 1950s. I seek to understand which concepts were highlighted through the production of these photographers in the period 1947-1951. Therefore, 11 reportages published during the chosen period were analyzed. Based on the Science and Technology Studies, I propose that the ways of seeing are essential components of photographic technological system. Because the private and collective ways of interpreting the world in which photographers and editors are embedded are crystallized in photos during production. The association of photography to the press, especially in the early twentieth century, expanded the access to representations of cities, people and lifestyles from places that many people would not be able to see with their own eyes. O Cruzeiro was a weekly illustrated magazine started in 1928. In the 1940s, inspired by European magazines, it became a modernization's vector of Brazilian photojournalism. With thematic variety and national distribution, O Cruzeiro reached a wide audience and became an important media in Brazil. I understand that photography influences the relationship between people and the world when the perception of objects, places, concepts is mediated by representations. Throughout the analysis was observed that the reportages build concepts by representations using dichotomies as femininity and masculinity, leisure and work, civilized and savage, lower and upper classes, among others. However, these themes are articulated to each other: for example, femininity or masculinity representations are crossed by social class, generation and ethnicity markers. The choices made by photographers and magazine, during photographic production and circulation, work like proposals of life models when representations are repeated over the years.

\"Segmentação de mercado com enfoque em valores e estilo de vida (segmentação psicográfica) - um estudo exploratório\" / Marketing Segmentation focused in Values and Lifestyles (Psychographics) - an Exploratory Study.

Silvia Assumpção do Amaral Tomanari 22 April 2003 (has links)
The present study approaches – in an exploratory level – the Marketing Segmentation focused in Psychographics. By making information on Marketing Segmentation available, this study proposes to explore and to clarify the concept of Psychographic Segmentation, contributing in this sense to the advance of the knowledge in Brazilian marketing. The reader will follow analysis and discussions on pshychographic studies carried out in Brazil as well as overseas; their origins and development; their concepts and characteristics; the possible demand for the development of a major Brazilian psychographic study. In particular, the present work includes the concept of Marketing Segmentation, the bases to segment (the phychographic bases mainly), the historic development of Pshychographics; the differences between Lifestyle and Psychographics; the differences between Psychographic Segmentation and Profile; the differences between General and Specific Psychographic Segmentation; the methodology used in Psychographic Segmentation; its characteristics and uses in the different countries where it has been employed. The study had two phases: the first was mainly theoretical, in which the specialized literature had been critically reviewed; the second was an empirical investigation, in which marketing, research and advertising professionals had been interviewed. Within the exploratory context of the present study, a set of data has been organized so that preliminary conclusions have been drawn. Among them, it has been concluded that Psychographic Segmentation is a relatively unusual practice in Brazil compared to the United States and European countries. One reason for that is the major lack of publications on this matter. In this sense, the present study may be a start point to further investigations, since it indicates paths for going deeper into the knowledge in Psychographics, a so complex yet so important subject matter.

Is the Emperor naked? : rethinking approaches to responsible food marketing policy and research

Cairns, Georgina January 2016 (has links)
The thesis aims to present a case for a rethinking of the paradigmatic frames underpinning food marketing control policy and research. In support of its contention, it reports on the methodological strategies, evidence outcomes and knowledge translation contributions of a series of research projects. The projects were commissioned by national and international policy makers during the period 2009-2015 in support of responsible food marketing policy development. They were conceptualised, developed and interpreted through participatory and iterative research planning processes. The research drew on theories and constructs from multiple disciplines. Public health, marketing and policy science contributed most, but information economics and management theories also informed research design and analysis and interpretation of findings. Its key generalizable findings can be summarised as follows: • The identification of a fragmented but convergent pool of evidence indicating contemporary food and beverage marketing is an interactive, dynamic phenomenon. • The identification of a fragmented but convergent pool of evidence demonstrating it significantly impacts sociocultural determinants of food behaviours. • The generation of evidence demonstrating a gap between the strategic aims of responsible marketing policy regimes and the inherent capacity of implemented interventions to constrain marketing’s food environment impacts. • The generation of evidence demonstrating that critical re-appraisal of food marketing policy research assumptions and preconceptions is a strategy supportive of policy innovation. • The generation of evidence that research intended to support real world multi-stakeholder policy development processes requires additional skills to those established and recognised as central to high quality research. These include the ability to engage with dynamic and politicised policy processes and their public communications challenges. • The generation of evidence that can inform future independent benchmark standard for responsible marketing development initiatives. • The generation of evidence that can inform future research on designing and developing policy that is ‘future proof’ and targets marketing’s sociocultural food environment impacts. Its most significant knowledge translation contributions have been: • Support for the WHO Set of Recommendations on the Marketing of Foods and Non-alcoholic Beverages to Children (subsequently endorsed at the 2010 World Health Assembly and the 2011 United Nations General Assembly). • Participatory research contributions to the Scottish Government’s responsible marketing standard development initiative (PAS2500). • Supporting the planning and development of the Scottish Government’s Supporting Healthy Choices Policy initiative. • Knowledge exchange with policy makers and stakeholders engaged in a scoping and prioritisation initiative commissioned by the United Kingdom’s Department of Health (An analysis of the regulatory and voluntary landscape concerning the marketing and promotion of food and drink to children). • Supporting responsible marketing policy agendas targeted to the engagement of a broad mix of stakeholders in innovative policy development processes. • Supporting policy makers’ efforts to increase popular support for stronger, more effective responsible marketing policy controls. The thesis therefore aims to present evidence that the programme of research presented here has made useful and original contributions to evidence and knowledge on contemporary food marketing and its impacts on food behaviours and the food environment. It aims to build on this by demonstrating how this evidence informed and supported policy development. Through this the thesis aims to support its case that a rethinking of food marketing policy research assumptions and conceptions can expand and enrich the evidence base as well as real world policy innovation.

Coronary heart disease prevention in healthy coronary-prone individuals

Webster, Sharon 23 August 2012 (has links)
D.Litt. et Phil. / This research investigated the effectiveness of the treatment programme used by the South African Recurrent Coronary Prevention Project (SARCPP) in reducing the risk of not only recurrent heart disease, but also of original occurrence of heart disease. Heart disease can often be attributed to lifestyle factors such as obesity, high fat content diets and smoking (Friedman & Ulmer, 1995 and Richards & Baker, 1988). Another lifestyle risk factor of heart disease is Type A behaviour, as first discovered by Rosenman and Friedman (1959). Type A behaviour is made up of various components, such as hostility, time urgency and insecurity. The SARCPP has effectively reduced Type A behaviour in past studies (Venter, 1993; Viljoen, 1993; MacLennan, 1994 and Webster, 1994) and it has been found that reducing Type A behaviour through this programme increases high density lipoproteins and decreases total triglycerides, thus decreasing physiological risk factors of heart disease (Wolff, Thoresen, Viljoen, & Venter, 1994). The SARCPP thus far had only been used with Type A persons who had already suffered a form of heart disease, such as myocardial infarction and angina pectoris (here called "unhealthy" Type As). Other interventions have been used to decrease Type A behaviour in subjects who had not yet suffered heart disease (or "healthy" Type As). A leading researcher in this field is Ethel Roskies (1979-1990). Due to ineffective measurement and ineffective treatment programmes, her attempts were not successful, though. This research study applied the treatment used in the SARCPP to both "healthy" and "unhealthy" Type As and it was found that it was as successful in reducing Type A behaviour in both the "healthy" subjects as in the "unhealthy" subjects. Not only was global Type A behaviour as measured by the Videotaped Structured Interview decreased in the treatment groups, but so were the components of Hostility, Time Urgency and Insecurity (although Insecurity was not decreased in the "unhealthy" subjects). The tendency by the subjects to repress angry feelings was reduced in both "unhealthy" and "healthy" subjects, as was cynical hostility in the "healthy" subjects. It was found that the "unhealthy" subjects had significantly more State and Trait anxiety before the treatment took place than the "healthy" subjects and that the treatment reduced that anxiety in the "unhealthy" subjects significantly. Depression was decreased in both "healthy" and "unhealthy" subjects. Thus, the treatment programme of the SARCPP was effective in reducing coronary-prone behavioural factors and can be used as both prevention in recurrence and prevention in original occurrence of heart disease.

Araújo, Liana Matos 25 February 2015 (has links)
This work is a study about the youth and the June square-dance of Aracaju, in Sergipe, and it aims to understand how the social construction of the idea of youth in the cultural event of the square-dance is built, through the analyses of identity processes, of lifestyles, of sociabilities among the members of the June square-dance in a context of cultural consumption. Within such context, it is necessary to analyze, by means of interviews, questionnaire and direct observation, the identity processes, how people consume and produce the local culture, how they give meaning to their expressiveness and sociability. It is also intended to check if the generational issue has importance in this social construction and to identify how gender issue and its relation to the notion of youth and its own generation are treated. And, as a result, knowing the universe of the square-dance members and their motivations to organize and participate in competitions of the June square-dance in Aracaju, Sergipe.

Joos, Martina 28 June 2012 (has links)
This thesis deals with everyday and leisure mobility and their spatial importance in the con-text of 10 residential districts in Berlin. The following main issue is explored: do leisure-time activities, everyday activities and social interactions happen mainly in the housing area? The analysis is developed from the increasing importance of local everyday activities in the context of ecological and social challenges. At this point the compact city planning paradigm that many communities and towns subscribe to can be implemented into planning. Based on the analysis of everyday and leisure mobility in the housing area, the relevance of this planning paradigm is examined in the context of a big city. The survey is essentially based on the spatial and action-theoretical approach. A correlation between space and mobility is assumed, where everyday and leisure mobility are determined by space and its socio-spatial structure while space is also created socially, i.e. by activities. 1,709 case studies are appraised in a quantitative survey conducted in 10 investigation areas arranged according to types of urban development with 61 inhabitants being available for further interviews. The findings show extensive activities within the housing area but their degree varies according to the individual areas. This result is closely linked to vital factors such as spatial structure and lifestyles. The latter are expressed through patterns of leisure mobility. Besides other activities combining structural factors, personal residential experiences and personal motives for activities are identified in the context of everyday and leisure mobility both within and outside the housing area. The survey is an essential contribution towards a better understanding of everyday mobility as well as its origins and spatial contexts. It is a prerequisite for urban district development guidelines and ensures that planning paradigms are assessed properly and adjusted if necessary.

Després, Michel 08 1900 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the challenges of maintaining daily mobility and the activities associated with different lifestyles over the course of aging. This endeavor uses an ecological approach to study the variation of daily mobility experiences according to lifestyles, residential environments, and moments in the life cycle. Supported by interdisciplinary theoretical framework, the thesis makes use of a mixed-method approach to identify various profiles of older adults according to their spatial practices and travel behavior using quantitative data (n=153), before studying how individuals of each profile experience mobility in different types of residential environments using semi-directed interviews, go-along and cartographic data. In doing so, the main question structuring the thesis concerns the possible differences between the travel behavior and daily mobility adaptation strategies of seniors and elders. From a review of recent literature, it can be anticipated that the passage to what Laslett calls the “Fourth age” can mark a turning point in the adaptation of mobility, as the culmination of trajectories of differential aging. The results of the thesis suggest nuancing these perspectives, by showing a certain continuity between senior and elders' lifestyles, namely in regard to relationship to automobility and adaptation strategies of mobility in different residential environments. In doing so, the thesis brings to light a diversity of older adult’s profiles facing contrasting challenges in the residential environments they live in. These results invite to nuance planning initiatives such as Age-Friendly Cities in light of knowledge gained about daily mobility aspirations of older adults with different lifestyles, living in residential areas with urban forms that may also vary.
