Language, literacy practices, and identity constructions inside and outside of a fifth grade classroom community

Burke, Amy Elizabeth 15 November 2012 (has links)
This case study investigated the ways in which its participants drew from available language and literacy practices as they constructed identities in various contexts. Data was gathered using ethnographic methods, including field notes, interviews, artifact collection, and video data. Observations took place within a fifth grade classroom and select focal participants were interviewed and collected video data on their own outside of school. The study was framed through theories of context-dependent identities, built from the semiotic resources available to people based on context and positionality. Findings suggest the participants engaged in multimodal, heteroglossic composing practices outside of school, while inside of school their composing practices were defined by accountability measures imposed on them from outside the classroom. Findings also showed how the classroom community was discursively built and maintained, at times functioning as a homogenizing force even though the discourses defining the community were those of acceptance and diversity. Participants cultivated what they viewed were acceptable identities within the classroom through the language and literacy norms and practices therein. The study suggests implications for educators in how language and literacy practices shape acceptable identities and the spaces for them, and for how the construct of community is understood and intended in classrooms versus how it functions in practice. / text

A case study of Korean American adolescents' identity construction through literacy practices on the Internet

Ok, Hyounjin 21 March 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to provide a clearer understanding of current Korean American adolescents under the recognition that their stories are barely told in educational research. Based on the literature that has described identity as a core concept in understanding adolescence and literacy practice as a dominant tool for identity construction, this study focused on Korean American adolescents' identity construction through their self-directed Internet literacy practices. Four Korean American adolescents living in a mid-size city in the Southwest participated in this study for several months. Data sources included face-to-face interviews, literacy practice logs, participants' literacy products on the Internet, online chat logs, and emails. Collected data were analyzed based on the constant comparative method. Results showed that these youth are active meaning makers with agency, that they constructed multiple, fluid identities within their sociocultural context, and utilized the Internet to stage these identities strategically. The result of this study implies a successful pedagogy needs to begin with careful consideration of each student's changeability and complexity by removing the labels imposed on them related to their ethnicity, race, gender, class, and so forth. This study also implies that literacy researchers' contribution, as messengers of adolescents' literacy practices outside of school, is critical for the a clearer understanding of adolescents. Finally, this study suggests that Korean American community take more interest in diverse voices among Korean American adolescents in the era of globalization. / text

Literacy Inside and Out: Investigating the Literacy Practices of Adult English Literacy Learners

Piersma, Carolyn 20 November 2013 (has links)
Adult English literacy learners (ELLs) are learners with limited or no formal schooling in their first language who are learning to read and write in English. At present, the limited research surrounding adult ELL instruction does not fully investigate the literacies that learners make use of outside of the classroom in a Canadian context. Through the lens of the New Literacy Studies, this case study examines the variety of print-literacy practices that adult ELLs engage with inside and outside of the classroom, highlights the value of these literacy practices, and emphasizes the importance of connecting out-of-class literacy practices with those occurring in the classroom. Additionally, this study uses learner perspectives to describe out-of-class literacy practices and provides a platform for adult ELLs to discuss their in-class preferences. The findings indicate the necessity of acknowledging prior experiences of ELLs in the classroom and provide implications for in-class instruction and resettlement agencies.

LINCing Literacies: Literacy Practices among Somali Refugee Women in the LINC Program

Pothier, Melanie Christine 11 August 2011 (has links)
This thesis investigated the literacy practices of a group of Somali refugee women participating in Canada’s federally‐funded ESL program LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada). Assuming that many Somali women arrive in Canada with limited experience with print literacy, and so encounter novel challenges in their settlement and learning experiences, I interviewed 4 Somali women about their uses and perceptions of the value of literacy in their lives and their experiences of learning to read and write in Canada. A cross‐case analysis revealed how social forces constrain and enable the women’s literacy practices, shaping both how they access and use literacy, as well as the ways in which they understand and value literacy. Implications are outlined for ESL educators, researchers and policy makers.

Uma escola que deu certo = as práticas de letramento de uma escola pública brasileira / The school that works : the literacy practices of a Brazilian municipal school

Batista, Luana Cristina de Moraes 16 August 2018 (has links)
Orientador: Sylvia Bueno Terzi / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Estudos da Linguagem / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-16T23:56:36Z (GMT). The aim of this research is to identify, based on the analysis of the practices of reading and writing, the model of literacy sanctioned by a public school in Brazil, situated in a rural area in the city of Matão (SP), the IDEB of which in the Prova Brasil (key instrument for measuring education quality) of 2005 was 7.3 - when the Brazilian average is 3.8 (on a scale from 0 to 10) -, besides verifying if the positive result achieved by the school was related to this model and/or to other contextual elements present in the community. For such, interviews with the professionals involved in the development of these practices were held, as well as with students from the school. Also observations were made, lessons were recorded and an analysis of documents related to the literacy practices of students in grade 4 of Elementary School was made, since Prova Brasil o is aimed at these students' performance. All of the data collected was analyzed based on the principles sanctioned by the New Studies on Literacy, which allow us to verify if the practices of reading and writing developed by/with the students both in the micro-context (school/classroom) and in the macro-context (community) are predominantly based on the conceptions defended by the Ideological Model of Literacy. The analysis of the data also revealed that these conceptions are also shared by other literacy agents in the community - like the family and government agencies in the municipal district -, showing the convergence between the dominant and dominated classes concerning the literacy practices developed in the community. The conclusions showed that the ideological approach adopted by the school and the values shared between the social instances of the community are directly related to the positive results obtained by the students in grade 4 in the Prova Brasil of 2005 / Mestrado / Lingua Materna / Mestre em Linguística Aplicada

E-learning, language education and the role of writing : a case study

Marzocco, Nadia January 2012 (has links)
This case study of a Swiss adult-learning institution investigates changing literacy practices and skills in adult foreign language education with relation to e-Iearning and with reference to the role of writing. Aspects concerning autonomous learning, teaching presence, and factors influencing the e-learning adoption-innovation process including access, pedagogical and policy-making implications were examined. The study uses both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies. It is underpinned by thinking in the New literacy Studies tradition and hopes to fill an existing gap in research, as much of the available literature seems to focus on children or higher education. The main results indicate that currently there is a mix of, on the one hand, low digitally skilled and reluctant teacher-adopters and, on the other, highly enthusiastic an~ digitally motivated ones, There is also an indication that access to simple infrastructure, with a relatively small investment, could produce good results in helping practitioners move along the path from innovation to adoption. Digital literacies and changes in literacy practices tend to put writing at the centre of communication. Writing is intended both as a subject area and as a means of communicating digitally, The results also reveal that the role of writing is closely linked to whether practitioners and learners alike consider the communicative value of writing to be on par with communication using the spoken word, i.e, whether collaborative writing in particular can be considered 'talk', The data points to a joint need by policy-makers and practitioners to acknowledge new digital literacy practices and to include them in a holistic way in local contexts and curricula, It also points to the need for institutions to take responsibility for providing links between research and practice and to provide integrated training in the field of e-learning and blended learning.
